Katsumi is rarely able to visit the Human World. Squad 4 physicians have a demanding job, one that requires long and dedicated hours, hard work, and no small amount of mental anguish. Only rarely was she able to get some time off. More often than not Katsumi would spend her off days at home relaxing. Often wandering the Rukon as she does, healing whatever sick she comes across. She chose the Human World this time, hoping it might feel good to be separated from all that may bring her stress. Kat was born in 1895 in the Ottoman Empire, the social technological advances since her death were simply astounding to the century old imperial subject. The world today was like something out of a grand novel, fanciful, bordering on science fiction as far as she was concerned. Mankind had in just 50 years after her demise, breached the precipice beyond the sky and landed upon the face of the moon. In her day no one would have thought such a thing possible. Now the Humans were eyeing colonies on other planets.
However, Katsumi did not care so much for that, moon landings and rockets and such. She sat in a cafe in Karakura, Japan; starring with an iron-clad gaze of pure fascination at the small white cup on the table before her, a scone on a plate off to the side. Steam rose from the cup, filling her sense of smell with the fragrance of expertly made coffee. The barista, the artist she was, had somehow through some bizarre sorcery, drawn a cat on the surface of the frothing milk. Of all things that Katsumi might find wonderful about the hyper-advanced society in which she now mingled, nothing seemed more enthralling than the feline sketch in her coffee.
Kat almost convinced herself to not ruin the milk-based art, but the smell of the coffee was becoming too much to bear. As well she looked weird enough staring into the cup as though it may hold the secret of mankind’s last century of progress. The shinigami strung her finger through the loop of the mug, and lifted it to her lips, taking a long sip. The coffee was a beautiful nectar, warm and soft through her lips.
Just as she was enjoying her drink, she felt a twitch, the unmistakable feeling of spiritual energy coming from outside the cafe. This feeling in her sense was very peculiar one of a kind Kat has never felt before. It did not feel like a Shinigami, that was for certain. Curiosity abounds. His reiryoku was not exactly weak either, around the the strength of a lower rank shinigami. Curious, indeed. Kat relaxed the suppression of her own energy and glanced out the cafe window, hoping the strange one might notice her.
The male hadn’t taken part in normal activities for awhile. Between his boss and kendo teacher Justin’s daily life was consumed with constant training. His situation didn’t get better when he decided on training for an extended period of time outside Karakura Town. The mountains were rough but after over a week he decided coming back was good. Sadly enough, Justin had to pick up work the day he got back. A package was to be delivered albeit he apparently arrived before his courier. The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled his nostrils, sweet and bitter varying scents warming his chest.
Justin faintly smiled albeit with faint innocence behind dark colored eyes. The spiritual presence felt strong though Justin quickly decided the shop’s aura was like another world cut off from outside interference. A curious frown formed when he took notice of a female with glasses looking towards his general direction. She couldn’t be looking at him, maybe someone behind him? He looked and found nobody. Slightly embarrassed and confused, Justin scratched his nose while glancing away when moving towards the cashier. ”Um, yea, I’ll take a caramel latte with whip cream.”
His drink arrived quickly as he ordered. Paying, he sat down at a table near the woman while glancing towards her and sipping on his coffee. Maybe he should say something. Her glasses gave her a neardy appearance but was cute, smart even. ”You’ve uh, nice glasses.” Weird as his comment sounded, inside Justin felt himself crying at a horrible attempt at making conversation and commenting her. ”Sorry, that sounded a lot weirder than I meant it to be.”
"There you are." Kat muttered as the human entered the cafe.
Katsumi watched him from her table afar on the other side of the cafe. She could sense his powers very clearly now. It was a very strange thing that she sensed. His spiritual energy felt slightly dark, almost like a hollow, however not, a dark feeling but still with much light inside it. Kat found him intriguing. She has only heard mere rumors and words in old texts speaking of Humans with spiritual powers that come from exposure to other spiritual beings. Little was known about these individuals and Kat was becoming ever more intrigued. Perhaps she could learn something to the benefit of science.
It may have been the coffee, but Kat felt her heart beat accelerate when the strange human seemed to be heading her way with a cup of coffee in hand. Katsumi sipped her coffee again, not removing her fixed gaze from him. She knew that a man would be unable to resist a lady staring them down, she knew he noticed, he would sit near her and talk to her. And he did too, he sat at a table right beside hers, and within a second made an awkward attempt at a compliment.
Kat giggled a small laugh, taking another sip of her coffee, "Indeed they're nice, they help me see and stuff." she says with a slight playful mocking in her voice. She sipped her coffee again and placed it gingerly on the saucer upon which it was served to her.
"Ti's rather rare to see a Human with spiritual powers. I could sense you from half way down the street." Kat turned in her seat to face the human, now more curious than ever. "Who are you, sir? And how in the blazes do you have such strong Reiryoku?"
The emotionally mortified Justin quickly arose with confidence. Still somewhat iffy about his personal taste in compliments he weakly giggled back. Despite his appearance Justin's nature further showed. Maybe he was better at talking to girls than he thought, but their conversation's serious levels increased vastly. The spiritual talk caused Justin, who was sipping on his coffee at that time, to nearly choke from surprise while coffee ended up his sinuses.
Choking for a bit he pounded his chest, holding cup on table with left hand, before gasping for breath with forehead landing tabletop. A few tears, his slightly watered eyes and red face was with a weak, and defeated, smile. Whipping it away with his sleeve, Justin took another sip, finding the taste slightly bad due to coffee previously invading his nose. "You owe me a kiss for that!" Justin proclaimed.
With a heavy sigh he blew his nose into a napkin then tossed into a nearby trashcan. Resting right cheek on right hand, elbow propped on table, he replied once more. "I swear, how many people in this town know about that kind'a thing?" Grumbling he just smiled. "Well, cat's out of the bad. Name's Justin, and I dunno much. You're endowed some yourself." He left his comment up in the air, a sort of revenge while referencing her feminine features and own spiritual power that he just now started feeling, not focusing on it before till now.
"I was born with it I guess. Came to Japan to seek enlightenment and stuff. So you can say I'm not just a normal tourist."
The Human seemed surprised of Katsumi's questioning, causing him to inhale much of his coffee. This was odd to her, had he really not sensed her powers up until now? Perhaps the sixth sense is unrefined in Humans or just this individual. He did seem to focus on her, and the attention she gave him. It was possible his libido had overcome his sense for Reiryoku momentarily as he pointed out her powers not a moment later. Kat could not help but offer a soft chuckle. The Shinigami rested crossed arms upon the table and leaned slightly forward in a way that showed her attention to Justin.
If he was born with his powers, that concluded a couple possibilities. He may be a Quincy, but due to the fact that he did not attack her on sight, Katsumi found that highly unlikely. Even if he was not the violent type, a Quincy would never be so friendly and moreover, flirty. A Human with an overactive Soul-Sleet, or the kind of Human who's soul brushed the precipice of the Spirit World. His name is Justin, and he is here to search for enlightenment. He might have been joking, however Kat found that comment made her even more interested. Karakura was certainly the place to find purpose for such an unusual creature like Justin. Kat wanted to know more. A lot more.
"Enlightenment, intriguing. I am sure your uncommon abilities have something to do with that. This town is a hotbed of spiritual activity. I'm sure you've found yourself some small amount of enlightenment in the form of 50 foot tall monsters." Her cynicism was showing in both her tone and expressions. It came off as a bit rude at times, like this one. Katsumi did not seem to care.
"My name is Doctor Katsumi Sora, my friends call me Kat. I am a Shinigami. I'm not a normal tourist either."
Kat clasped her hands together on the back of her head, turned and leaned back in her chair. "You're lucky you encountered me. There's a good chance any other Shinigami would have cut you down, or worse, arrested you. Then you would have been thrown into the clutches of the research department and picked apart bit by bit." She only half glanced at him. "A cute boy like you, what a shame that would be."
