All in all this was either an amazing plan or a horric horrible nightmare of an idea. "So I guess that I am ready to go right now," looking at Elan he raises an eyebrow. "What about you? You all ready?" Elan grabs the robes and holds them up to herself, sizing them up. "I think that this will work just fine." Not fifteen minuets later Gage was in his robes, belt tieing his robes shut.
"Well sir, you look good. Very traditional but you are lacking something rather...essential," Out of his jacket the butler pulls two rather short japanese swords, both with plain cross guards and no grip wraps.
"Didn't even cross my mind," Gage takes one and pops it out of its sheath, looking it from top to bottom," Is it real?"
The butler does not break eye contact with Gage, his face plain and solemn as he hands the other one to Elan. "They are real blades sir, not the Zanpakto that Shinigami use in the spirit world but they are indeed real." Gage nods as he slips the blade and sheath into his belt and wiggles it into place so that it is comfortable. Behind him Gage hears the sound of some kind of door open, air rushing in and sucking the nearby paper in like a small storm. Beside the door Charilus stands with his hands outstretched, wooden batons glowing a green light as they seem to hold the gate open.
"This gate will take you to Soul Society, I have already show Elan the way back so when you are ready she can get you back. If for some reason Elan can't get you back Fero will be able to get you back. You keep an eye on her and stay out of trouble. Now Go." Gage nods, taking Elans hand and running into the deep purple void, just as he was about to fall into the dark mass he uses his Soul Communication to start his bounds, leaping from pad of air to pad of air. Behind him he totes Elan, her bounds keeping good pace with him so that he does not have to slow for her to not fall.
"Elan are you doing alright?" Gage would like to look back but he heard a myth?...Rumor?...He heard of this train, some kind of tunnel cleaner that would go through and demolish anything that happened to be in the tunnels and In his new found weakened state Gage didn't know whether or not he would have been able to fend off something that Shinigami had to avoid for fear of death and that was the last thing that he wanted right now.
"Yeah Im okay," Elans hand squeases his own hand, the two of them flying though the air like a pair of steriroid fueled frogs. At the end of the tunnel a pair of slidding wooden doors with paper squares sits open for them, the tunnel coming to an end behind them. Touching down in Soul Society the doors close, then vanish. Vaporizing from the bottom up as a mist until the particals vanish into the air he sighs,"Well I guess we have commited to this now. I suppose we should head this way?" Elan smiles and catches her breath.
"Yes, the town we are looking for is supposed to be about two miles up that path. We had to drop in a little farther away than I would have likeed but any closer and someone might have either stumbled across us or sensed the door opening," It was good reasoning, a random person spotting them could be the end of their whole trip as they may raise some kind of Soul Society intruder alarm bringing Gage and Elan to the eyes of the Shinigami.
"Well it looks like your stay has been extended indeffinaltly until we can get this all cleared up. I hope you guys have enough stuff to stay comfortable," Pulling out three wooden planks with several runes carved into them she stands them on their ends so that they are in a triangle to each other. Touching one after the other she speaks the words to a Shinigami Kido that causes a flare of green light to beam up like a collumn. Once the beam hits a hundred feet it flares outward like a canopy and shades the entire village with its red light. Once the sides of the red canopy hit the ground the a ripple of white energy goes out, turning the red energy clear so that the canopy is see through but that is not what Gage see's. He can feel the energy of the canopy still there, hoving just above them in the sky like a cloud, deafening his over all ability to sense energy in the surrounding area on top of sealing off the edges of the village entirely so that he is blind.
No such bad luck though, they both walk down the path, heading comfortably to the town. It only takes about thirty minuets before they happen on the front of the city, the tallest buildings starting to peak out over the top of the trees. "Well that wasn't too bad," Elan nods, quiet for the most of the walk up here. In all acutality it makes Gage feel a bit uneasy, why was she acting so funny? Did he upset her when he lost it over the mask with Charilus? Deciding that he would be happier not bringing it up yet he drops it for the time being. Maybe if they found some time to talk about it she would tell him what was wrong. He has grown rather fond of her, the small antics of hers that were at one point annoying now being something that he misses if she doesnt talk to him.
The town itself was tiny, or at least tiny in reguards to what he is used to. The population couldn't be over four hundred, a few stray people walking up and down the street as they ran their chores for the day. The buildings on either side of the street have open windows and straw rooves, the rain from earlier that day still wet in the soil leaving mud in thick spots all over the street. A small girl spots the two of them walking forward from a distance, stopping and whispering to her mother who was across the street. Cheering she runs forward smiling as the mother calls out to her, reigning her in so that she stops charging them for what looks like an aggressive hug.
Waving Gage smiles, if he was so warmly welcomed to this town then he must at least act the part and wave, prove he is freindly and maybe the people would be willing to guide him where ever he is going. Walking towards the woman Gage and Elan pass several other people that just stand and stare at the two of them, probably curious as to why the Soul Society would have come out here. The mother, whos face went from mild worry to pleasant and happy, greeted them. "Hello, I can't beleive that the Gotie had responded so quickly to our calls. We were getting worried that there was going to be another outbreak before you were able to show up."
Gage was at a loss, not sure of how he should respond to her comment of the Gotie being called out here when Elan speaks up. "No, we got the call and we were nearby so we decided to come out as soon as we could. Can you tell us what is going on? We got a less than accurate report." The womans face fell a bit as she concidered her next words.
"Well the chances are that you were not misinformed. We have had something going around. It is killing people all over the village, the simptoms only lasting for a few hours before they go away. Then within a day they seem to die without warning, the body turning black and liquifying into the soil." A scream echoes behind one of the buildings nearby but the walls of trees all over the landscape has made it so that it is difficult to pinpoint any particular location based on sound. Closing his eyes Gage feels around the area until he finds one body that is drasticly losing energy and another nearby leaning against one of the buildings.
Pointing in the direction Gage leaps into action, charging around the house to find a man, face down in the dirt and his body contorting so violently that his bones were either breaking or they were dislocating themselves severly. "What happened?" Gage turns to the nearest observer who was a frightened woman leaning against the house facing away from the contorting body.
"He must have caught the death! He is infected, we have to burn that spot and anything he touches!" A man yells in agreement from the back of the crowd that was forming around the now limp body. Starting in the middle of the chest the body begins to get moist, turning black and liquifying like it were melting jello before the soil soaks up all the muck. "No one touch anything here until I say otherwise." Walking around the body Gage stands and looks at the surounding area, nothing but the back of one of the huts and the tree line in view. Peaking through the trees he finds nothing of intest, just that the body of the man, who ever he was is now turning to mush and being absorbed by the soil.
After about ten minuets of looking around the smell of smoke catches Gages nose, the burning smell of straw obvious. Turning to the group Gage expects to see someone with a handful of smoking grass as they go about 'blessing' the area with their magic. There was no one though, everyone watching the body vanish slowly back to earth. "Does anyone smell that? Whats burning?" One woman looks away, coughing and avoiding eye contact. Beside him Elan speaks up,"Gage that house is on fire." Looking around the building Gage runs up, pulling air down in a wall to put out the fire even though it was fully developed and was far past that point where someone can go in and pull out any salvagable items.
Turning around Gage looks at the crowd and asks as a whole, "Did anyone see who started this?" A man coughs as he looks away for support from the crowd but no one speaks up. Frustrated he steps forward," Fine then! I set it! We are all going to die unless someone does something to stop this plague! Who is going do it you?! You might as well be infected with how close you got to Fero!"
Gage stares at the burning house, not wanting to put it out using Soul Communication in front of everyone. A chill goes down his spine, his left hand resting on the hilt of the sword at his hip. Something was wrong in this little village, something big enough to get his attention but small enough for him to not be able to spot it off the bat. He doesn't get bad feeling all the time but when he does it is almost always something serious, his gut telling him to keep his eyes wide and ready for anything that might be coming.
"Wait a second, did you say Fero? Where is he?" Gage looks back at the hysterical man and around the crowd to see if and where his contact is, maybe that he would be able to spot him nearby.
"Fero? You saw him! He is back there turning to mush behind Siknal's house, you probably got the disease from him already!" Turning away the man starts off, heading down the road before he he stops and goes into one of the houses, slamming the door behind him and vanishing into the dark of his privacy. Gage looks to the house where the man's body was vanishing into nothing, a dark sesidue being all that is left. "Well Elan, What do you think? Where do we go from here?"
Elan looks at Gage pondering what their next action should be. "Maybe we should find someplace nearby to settle in for the night and tomorrow we can start checking the villagers each for any knowledge of what is going on." Nodding Gage dislikes the idea of not knowing which one of three hundred villagers he needs to question but he has little choice. If he was going to find the next mask they had to find out where it was and the only person in the living or dead world that might know where it is would be in this little town. The only thing that they can hope for is that the person that they are looking for actually knows something that can be of use and not that they saw their father leave with it when they were eight.
"Hey it looks like you have some freinds on their way," an older man in the crowd gestures over their shoulder back at the road at a pair of Shinigami approaching. Gages stomach falls, this was almost as bad as the situation could get. "Eeeeeelan..." Gage sidesteps closer to her, bumping his elbow into her side. "What do we do?"
"Just relax, we are students that are looking for extra credit and have gotten out on leave," Elan straightens her outfit and smiles as she strides through the crowd up to the shinigami. Gage following in suit does not smile, his mind to distracted in trying to look like he was supposed to be here. "Hello, what brings you guys this far out?"
The two shinigami are each about five foot nine, the female on the right wearing the same robes as Elan and the man wearing matching robes to Gage's own. At least their outfits are similar. Speaking up the woman smiles and waves at them," We were dispatched when the Gotie got word that there might be some kind of illness going about. We are supposed to get a situational report on whats going here and get back to the Gotie with that information. What are you two doing here?" Elan laughs lightly before clearing her throat.
"Well we are actually still in the achademy and are on leave. We were looking to maybe involve ourselves in something productive to get some good marks with the Gotie, that way we have a better chance to get into the squads that we want." Elan laughs and shoulder bumps Gage so that he has to speak up, even though he really has no idea what to say. "Yeah, I am not the greatest at book learning but I am better with a blade than most anyone I know so I will not get passed up if I can help it."
"Ah well I don't know that this town is a very good place for you to be, the word is that there is some kind of a diesease in the area and if thats true then its probably a good idea to get out of the town, we don't want the thing spreading farther than we can contain." Elan nods,"I understand what you mean but if its true that there is something going on here then I want to stay and do what I can to help."
Another scream echoes through the forest, both shinigami reaching at their belts to draw their blades at once. "Where did that come from?!" the man, in his late thirties by his appearance is someone that drew his blade first and asked questions second because he was already off, trotting down the road towards what ever he thought that the scream came from. "Back that way!" Gage points down the road, he couldn't tell what building exaclty he heard it come from but he most deffinaltly heard it come from inside something. Getting closer to the end of the road he notices that the buildings are starting to run out, the scream having to come from one of these in the back.
Everyone is distacted as they search for the source of the scream that no one notices the man stagger out of his hut, the same man that had started the fire in the first place. His eyes, red and swollen searched the crowd before he fell forward to his knees and began to cough. Gage spots him and starts forward when the female Shinigami intercepts him,"No, this has gotten serious. If this disease is spreading this quickly you need to stay away, you shouldn't be this far away from the school in the first place." Turning to the man she takes a knee beside him, patting him on the back after sheathing her blade.
The mans arm reaching out to grab at something begins to fumble in the air, the shinigami stepping backwards to keep her distance incase he was infected. Then the most disgusting transformation began, his skin starting to bubble and tear. Growing larger and continuing to grow in size until he was the size of a horse the raises his face to the crowd, the skin hanging loosly to the bone underneath. Opening a massive distended jaw it roars, the final dredges of skin falling away until its is nothing but a massive black body with a single white bone mask.
"Everyone back!" Leaping backwards the Shinigami calls out,"Gilly! Get everyone back! We need to keep this thing away from the people if this is contagious!" Gilly acts without speaking, lunging about the road, pushing and guiding the frantic civilians away from the fight.
The hollow itself, born of a Plus, was large. Heavy enough to out weigh a horse it was also broad and short. Standing at only four feet tall it leans forward, hunched like a large spider but only has six legs. Each of the legs, ending in a four fingered hand, has three joints so that while it was short its arms could eaisily reach out to ten feet away without having to lean in that direction. Its mask, with three eye holes, has a large flat mouth that is unhinged at where the jaw line would be so the lower jaw is capable of stretching as far as the muscles allow.
Gage turns to face the hollow head on, its senses picking up that while he was in a waekened state he was still the strength of a leiutenant and as such should draw the most attention. Flexing his hand Gage releases his bind on his fullbring waiting for the flames to engulf his body and allow him to transform but nothing happens. Lunging at him the hollows mouth stretches to over two and a half feet wide, razor sharp teeth uncovering themselves from under the mask. Gage freezes, still unsure as to what to do since his fullbring did not activate. It was something that he has never encountered, having to figure out a backup plan when his release does not work.
A flash of light from beside him makes Gage blink back to reality as a blur of movement crests across his vision to slam down on top of the hollow. Hitting the charging hollow square in the middle of the back the hollows stomach hits the ground and skids it to a stop. The top of the hollow is pinned down but the massive weight of a large metalic club extending over six feet long. The end of the club, held by Gilly, has a large wooden spike extending from it. It had to be his Shikai, the initial release of his Zanpakto that makes it twice as dangerous and three times as deadly.
"Gilly, You handle that thing and I'm going to put up the barrier. The Gotie are going to be here in a few days so we have to keep everything sealed down until they arrive." Gilly nods and lifts the club again before dirving it home one more time into the body of the spider hollow, its body twitching and its legs scraping at the ground to get away from the Shinigami and his bug smashing tool.
Finishing the barrier she stands, the barrier large enough to impress him but not large enough to feel like he couldn't take her. "Alright, until this thing is all straightned out we are going to be under lock down so make friends, we are going to have to take shifts watching the totems so that no one breaks the barrier and leaves with what ever this thing is. Nodding his agreement Gage speaks up,"Alright, I will do what I can. My name is Gage." Reaching out with a hand shake she looks at him a little oddly before taking it and smiling back. "The name is Jool. Fifth seat in the Kido Corps. That is Gilly, ninth of the 11th squad. Nice to meet you."
And so they begin, Gage and Elan both taking four hour shifts to let the shinigami take themselves a short break from watching the barrier totems. They all wait, Gage hoping for an opertunity to sneak away and find someway for him and Elan to get home without incident while Elan looks for some kind of clue as to what is going on. Like this the first day ends, a nearby home owner offering them all a place to sleep and feeo to eat. Jool, in an effort to keep the histerics at bay, enforces a night time cerfew. By dark everynight the only people allowed on the streets is the shinigami and their two false students, anyone caught out after then being restrained and questioned but no one dared to be out.
Elan, after a day makes freinds with a younger local preistess, spending much of the day with her talking about the events and taking notes on the lives of the town and how they all choose to live. The had access to technology but the Gotie are the main holders of it. Some smaller trinkets make it out to the villages but almost no one knows how to use them. Throughout the days, Gilly stands watch when he is not guarding the Totems or getting what little rest he can. Every time someone should fall ill the Shinigami was there, his Shikai in hand to crush them into the earth with pregidice.
At first Gage couldn't help but look at ear of the hollow as being a human soul just moments ago but after the fourth or fifth one, the giant scyth like hands nearly decapitating a woman on the street, he started to realize that they were more monster than man. Elan had a hard time getting used to it, the hollows dieing roars all sounding like the death cries of a human to her. It had to be the screams that pushed her to dive into the study of the Soul Society culture so indeapth.
Finally Gage finishes his short shift guarding the totems, the hour being late enough for him to head to bed. On his way there he crosses pathes with Jool. "Hello Gage, I trust nothing bad happened."
"No, Gilly just started his watch and I am about to get some rest. There hasnt been an incident in over five hours so I think I am going to get it while I can. Its getting late and I am exhausted. I think Elan is with Eve over in their make shift church." Eve being the towns only preistess makes her to only spiritual confidant unless you wanted to count the Soul Society where were the 'hammers' of the Soul King.
"Right well I am going to go keep Gilly company, perhaps he will have caught something on the transmitter about the statis of our backup," Turning she strides towards Gilly, Gage noticing finally how pretty he actually thought she was. Standing five foot ten inches she had the body of a soldier from what he could tell, the loose robes leaving a lot to the imagination. Her skin was tanned and her hair was long, braided into a waist long ponytail that ended in a jade ring as a weight. Her clothes were standard but some how she was hiding the totems in them so certainly she has something else under the robes.
Gage looks away, she was not only the one who was keeping this entire town sealed up so that this disease does not spread but she is also a Shinigami. He could not afford to let his guard down and let it slip that he was a human playing the role of a dead person in robes. Heading to the small house Gage flops down on his little bed and almost instantly falls asleep, nightmares of hollows and shinigami fighting to the death making him toss and turn all night.
"Sir! Sir! Wake up!" Gage nearly leaps from his bed, standing and looking around for who ever was calling to him. A body in the middle of the doorway speaks once more, the voice that of a younger boy. "You friends, the Shinigami! Something has happened! You need to get to the Chapel! Hurry!" then the boy was gone, his silhouette vanishing as Gage stands up and starts for the Chapel. Gages stomach falls when he realities that he is 'playing' a shingami, one of the other shinigami being Elan. Panic starts to set in as he starts sprinting towards the chapel building, hoping desperately that Elan was alright.
Coming up to the chapel Gage stares at the front steps. It was gruesome, a red pool of blood pouring down the steps into the dirt of the street. Stepping forward Gage walks up the stairs to the main floor of the chapel, the walls and floor of this small room that was no bigger than 15' by 15'. Inside was horrible, flies and death ranked the air, blood covering the walls and floor, the seats in the small room covered in some kind of bloody spray, as if someone was swinging a blood coated sword.
Gage is stuck in awe, his face contorted into plain fear and worry. A voice behind him starts speaking but he ignores it as he walks around and tries to take in the details of the room. Maybe that is something that would tell him that Elan was alive or at least what had happened. Chairs are all overturned, the walls coated in blood and the alter at the front of the room was knocked over, someone put up a fight. A big fight by the looks of the overturned room. "...the room was just found like this sir. There was no signs of the corpse rot puddles anywhere nearby so we think that what ever did this dragged away the bodies."
"Elan, dragged away Elan," Gage refused to believe that Elan was dead. He was willing to accept that maybe she was in trouble but she was not dead. There was no chance that she was dead. He was supposed to keep an eye on her, she was supposed to be okay but he was sleeping. Gage felt a wave of guilt wash over him as he realizes that as she was being mauled by what ever did that she was probably calling out for help, for him, but he was sleeping too heavy to hear. If she was dead he would never forgive himself, this feeling like it was his fault.
Shinigami friends...where were the shinigami? Gilly was supposed to be on watch, looking out over the town and making sure that no one was hurt.
Gage slowly walks the line of the room, seaching for any sign that Elan might be okay. He had no idea what that sign would look like but blind hope tends to stagger around. Searching the room he looks under chairs, kneeling in blood when necisarry and at one point he even finds a single stip of skin. It was hung up on a jutting spliter of one of the pews, someone must have gotten their leg hung on it as they were passing it for some reason. The skin was only an inch long, the texture rubbery and enough to make him gag. It was pale, Gage wiping it off his with sleeve, the color of the skin being pale enough to match Elans leg.
"Thats not all, Jool was killed-er....she is missing too and the other shinigami is unconcious, he apparently passed out after fighting off what ever attacked him at the totems," The woman looks disheveled, her eyes filled with the same kind of panic that makes someone develope a nervous twitch eventually. "We lost some of our town guards too, three of them died fighting what ever it was that attacked Gilly but no one got a good look at it and was able to survive to tell the tale of it.
Taking the time to look around Gage finds that all the scenes look alike, tons of blood and a severe mauling must have taken place but no body or even peices of a body save for the small portion of skin on the chair leg. It was as if the scenes were cleaned of any evidence to hide any possible chances of tracking the culprit. The totems, knocked down now are laying on their side, the binding magic that held the barrier up around the town being dispelled leaving them open to the world. Several people are on the streets, packing their things into their bags, looking like they are about head out for a long trip across the country to leave behind all of this nightmare.
Hours pass, Gages gag reflex passing from constantly kicking in down to almost not even being there. He spends these hours searching through the blood, through the broken furniture and through the damaged equipment to find any kind of clue as to what happened and what had done it but there was nothing. Every bit of evidance was hidden so well that he was not able to find it or there was not anything to find in the first place.
