Gage and Elan wiggle through a small manhole sized port in the ice floor, squeezing through several tight spots as he follows the feeling of the warm air. At one point he has to squeeze through a crack by breathing out all the way so that his chest can fit though the gap. It was a tight fit but the closer that he gets the warmer that the air gets until he finally gets to a large vertical crack that leads into a tunnel. The tunnel it self is not natural, being cut mildly rectangular and the walls being mostly flat it is obvious that the tunnel is a man made passage. Gathering himself together he wiggles through the crack, crying out when he has the back side of the crack press against his newly healed back.
"Gage take it easy, I was only able to seal it up. Its not healed, just patched. Your just going to reopen it like that," Elan slips through the crack with ease, standing upright and dusting herself off. "Where in the world are we?" Gage looks around. This mountain is where they were going to find the next mask so it only makes sense that this tunnel leads to the mask, one way or the other unless for some reason there are two unrelated tunnels cutting their way through the mountain side. "I think we found the back way into the cave where the mask is kept. I figured it would have been a building or something near the peak. Not so close to the base of the mountain."
Looking around Gage uses his flame to light the tunnel, realizing that it looks more like a hallway than anything. To his left he finds a set of stairs that go up into a mess of rubble and ice. There was a passage there at one time but now the tunnel was blocked off by some kind of cave in, the rocks being man sized at minimum with one exceptionally large one that was the size of a car. There was no guessing how long it would take to get the rubble out of the way to find a way out leaving Gage with one option. Go the other way. To the right the tunnel seems to go on for a while, stretching forward a left turn into the darkness.
Holding the flame high he brightens it, to see the walls, still stone but now carved with old depictions of a snake like monster, long and thin its head seemed to be covered by some kind of mask or helmet. "Hey Elan, what do you think of this?" Gage points to the pictures as he keeps an eye on the hallway.
"Uh, well I never took ancient cultures in college but it looks like this is what we are looking for. If this here," she points at the snake monster," is the hollow with the mask then this mask is the mask of greed. Look here." Elan points a little farther up the wall where the snake is coiled around what looks like a pile of gold plates, one plate in its mouth as if it were eating it. "The mask of greed makes you want to keep your wealth in your possession at all times so it looks like the snake is swallowing its horde."
Farther they walk the more images they find, Gage staying ahead as she looks over them, a camera in hand snapping photos of the wall. Taking the left turn the hall way goes for a few feet before turning to the right again, the whole time the pictures advancing on the walls. "Here it seems that the hollow some how infected the population, turning them into some kind of snake humanoid. They became his congregation, worshiping it as their own god an bringing it what ever wealth that they could manage."
Elan was slow, the constant snapping of photos lighting the hallway farther than his own torch could. Ahead of them the path is cut off once more, another cave in making this tunnel a dead end. "Elan I think that this is it. The path is cut off here, another cave in. You keep looking over these and I am going to see if there is a way through." Elan nods without speaking, her face entranced with the depictions of the mask and its followers. Gage turns his attention to the rubble, flipping over the largest ones first to exposed a small fist sized hole that leads into the dark.
Rock after rock Gage pulls them out of the way, stopping every few minuets to catch his breath. Eventually even Elan finishes admiring her pictures and helps him, his attention drawn to the pile in front of him. Looking back to check on her he laughs. "I thought that you were helping me." Elan stops what she was doing to look at him almost as if she were caught doing something she shouldn't have. She wasn't digging up rock for the sake of the finding a passage through, she was digging because the rest of her images were covered by the cave in.
"I was helping. I was just doing it from back here...in front of these drawings...with my camera..." Elan doesn't break eye contact with Gage as she raises her camera, snapping a photo of the wall again. "Uh huh. Well..." Gage turns back to the rubble in front of him and starts rolling the rubble out of the way in chunks, trying to at least not roll it backwards into Elan. Finally he forms a hole about three feet around and three tall,"You all ready? We can keep moving now so stay close and we might be able to keep this thing from collapsing on us."
Putting the flame through the hole in the rubble the tunnel stretches onward into the darkness, stopping at some kind of wall...no a door. Double doors. Gage's eyes slowly adjust to the darkness, the far away doors coming into focus. "Elan, I found some doors. Get through here. We are getting closer." Gage crawls through the hole, standing upright on the other side he walks forward, stopping in front of a massive hole in the ground. With all the cave ins in this tunnel it would not be surprising to find that the floor collapsed but that was not what happened here. The edges of this hole are sharp, the side having neat edges. The bottom of the hole seems to go down thirty feet before ending in a watery base, the bottom of the water too dark to see.
"Be mindful of the hole, I don't see the bottom," Gage takes a knee and places a palm on the ground. Pulling the stone on the floor he stretches it to make a thin beam across the gap, reaching from one side of the hole to the other even though it was only an inch across. Trying again he pulls it so that the beam becomes wider thick enough for the two of them to walk across as long as they at least try to keep their balance.
Stepping forward Gage gets closer to the large double doors, 9' tall and over four feet wide each. The door themselves, made of some kind of metal, are oxidized to an odd green color with a rough texture covering what must have been at one point a shiny brass. The doors themselves have two large rings as handles, the first one having corroded through and fallen to the ground leaves only the second one. Grabbing the hand Gage waves Elan back,"I don't know what we are going to find so don't be standing in the middle of the doorway when it opens."
Pulling Gage hears the large door creaking at the seams but it only just shudders and sits still. The sound of water leaking out onto the floor makes him look down as a small spray of water starts to gush out from under the door. "It has water on the other side, get ready for it." Gage yanks on the door once more making it rip completely from the wall followed closely by a swarm of water that shoves the doors like a battering ram. Plowing him backward it is all he can do to catch his breath before the water submerges him and Elan both, the weight of the door shoving him down against the floor.
Rushing water shoves them both, sliding them along the ground like debris towards the hole. Gage rolls over, planting one hand down on the ground and shoves up so that the door does not crush Elan. Everything is dark, the world spinning around him, when he feels his footing vanish. Oh god, the hole. Gage's arms flail out and grasp desperately for something to hold onto when he feels the beam that he created slap into his underarm grabbing the beam he feels the weight of the door slam into his back nearly knocking him loose but he manages to hold onto the bar with one hand as he feels Elan slam into his free hand.
Grabbing her he feels the water finally stop pouring over him, air finally hitting his face he dangles, his hand slipping slightly on the bar. "Elan! Are you alright?" Gage looks down in the dark but see's just the pitch black. "Yeah, I'm alright but I think I broke my arm. I can't get up like this."
"Yeah, I have it. Don't break anything else," Gage swings her back and forth while pulling himself up with his other hand. Throwing her at the same time as he pulls up he lands her flat on her back with a whimper as she jostles her arm, then climbing up and plopping down himself.
Conjuring a flame he looks around, the last of the water flows past them both, the level decreasing slowly until finally it settles down to nothing but puddles. Standing up Gage helps Elan up, one hand under her arm and the other on her waist, pulling her to her feet. Looking at her arm Gage recognizes immediately what's wrong. "Your arm is not broken. You dislocated your shoulder." Testing her arm tentatively he apologizes when she winces at the motion. "I can't pop it back into place, never done it before but-"
Gage is surprised with Elan's next line, it being much more of a tough guy line. "I can walk you through it. You just have to do-," Taking a breath she tries to stop her shaking so that she quits straining her shoulder," You just have to do what I say." The next few seconds pass in a blur as Gage pops her shoulder back into place with close direction and a quick hit from Gage's fist. A short yell from her makes this the first time that he, or she for that matter, has ever seen someone pop a joint back into place. It was not a pleasant event, the pop being enough to make his mouth water from the urge to get sick.
Together, both hurt and tired they walk towards the room, the floor still about two inches thick in dirty water and muck. The room is massive, the ceiling over twenty feet tall and fifty feet wide. From front to back the room spans fifty feet, a platform sitting one foot above the water level has a curled massive scaled snake, its head tucked away in the coils somewhere. "Oh wow...that is...a big snake." And it was, the thing had to be over sixty feet long curled like a ball in the middle of the platform. "Stay quiet, that thing is probably dead but...if its a hollow then its not dead and we have a big sleeping beauty."
The length of the room is supported by massive stone columns, two having fallen down from some kind of impact. "Uh...okay," Gage could hear it in her voice, she wanted nothing to do with that snake and its four foot thick body as she pulls out her cell phone as if she was going to be able to call for help down here.. Stepping forward Gage stands in the middle of the muck filled room quietly, stopping as the coils stir. "Well its not dead..."
Rolling and flipping over and over its head comes into view, a golden mask with wide eyes and a massive grin on its face stares him in the face. Hello there...and who may you be? The snake slithers in a circle around the platform without losing eye contact and tilts its head.
"I am Gage. And who are you?" Gage walks forward, a flame conjured in his hand lighting the room enough for him to see the hollow. Walking forward Gage finds another disturbing fact, the mask while it has a large grinning face has a moving mouth. Under the mouth of the mask Gage can see a mouth full of layers and layers of serrated teeth like a shark mouth. The only part of the entire hollow that had any real detail was the mask, its golden face contorted into a constant grin but somehow malleable enough to move with speech.
"I am the first. I am the most important, the original beast. You are not all that you seem. I can smell you. You are-sssssss-wrath. I can smell him. I can smell me in your blood. We are all in your...blood," Gage starts to circle around it, watching the snakes head weave up and down as it lowers its body into the water.
Gage Elan "What do you mean I am wrath?" Gage walks forward at a diagonal to the snake, closing the distance. He was going to get into it with this snake and if he does he would at least have the advantage of aggression with this massive beast. Reaching over his shoulder he grabs the handles of his backpack, pulling his modular armor up and over so that the plates begin to armor him.
"You do not know? There is sssssssssso much that you humans don't seem to know about. An entire world of riches and you settle with a house and a car. Petty little beasts." Slithering at him the snake starts charging pushing Gage into a job. The clash of titans would begin now, Gage being the hunter and the snake being his Goliath. Throwing his shoulder into the charge Gage leaps, a green circle of soul communication exploding fro his feet as he hurls himself forward in a blur. Colliding with the snake it rears back, its head being tossed back from the impact. Roaring its pain away it turns to face him, striking with its face as a snake would. Gage leaps backwards, the face of the snake colliding with the stone ground and muck, splashing him so that he has to cover his eyes to keep from being blinded.
Gage Elan As soon as the muk settles Gage is blind sided by a massive blow to his ribs, the tail of the snake whipping about with enough force to throw him against the far wall cratering into it a bit. Hitting with so much force Gage has the wind knocked out of him, his body going numb as the snake slowly slithers forward. "Why? sssssssssss. You have so much more power but you...choose not to use it." He could feel the tender cracking of at least one rib now broken, his back now bleeding again from the earlier wound.
"I suppose your right. I shouldn't be playing games right now. We are on a bit of a time constraint and I can't afford to lose to you. I kinda need the money and there are people that depend on me," Gage stands up, releasing his full bring as 'Greed' charges again. Flames erupt from his body, coating him in its red energy before extinguishing, leaving him blackened with glowing red eyes. His voice, now sounding like the voice of ten different men, speaks to the snake. "I am Gage and you have something that I want. I suppose you could call me greedy."
The snake is upon him, coiling around his body, Gages hands flahing about as they slash the body of the snake. Greed goes in for a bite on his back but he throws a backwards elbow to the sneak attack crashing into the head with enough force to knock its head aside. Sprawled out on the water the snake tries to regain is composure when Gage turns and opens his mouth. Charging a bright red orb with energy he rears his head back and lets it loose, the beam catching the lower half of the snake as it lunges out of the way.
Just as the orb fades away and Gages vision is not blinded by the intense light a flash of movement makes him jump backwards, trying to put some distance between him and what ever was coming. He was too slow though, the head of the snake latching on to his arm. Gage was not worried though. He has never once found a single thing that could break his skin in his release, the fangs of this monster most likely not capable of being a threat. He was wrong though. The fangs cut into his skin like butter, shredding his arm down to the bone treating it as if he was not wearing the armor over his body at all.
Searing pain follow the bite, his body going numb at the bite before he felt the pain spread followed by the numbness. It was a poison, spreading through his body like a plague before soon his entire body was still, his lungs barely able to move. "See little human. You are dangerous but your lack of knowledge isssssss your down fall." Leaning in the face opens up at the jaw, the fangs digging into his chest, ripping through metal armor and flesh like clay. At least what ever that thing it poisoned him with made him numb enough to not feel any of it mauling that was happening, the golden mask filling his vision.. The snake rears its head back, its mouth covered in blood and mush as a red energy trails from its mouth to his chest.
Leaving his torso this red energy continues to stream into the mouth of 'Greed' before it solidifies, hardening into a solid red mask. The entire time that this energy leaves Gages body he can feel his soul as if it were on fire. The pain was excruciating and if he was able to move at all he would have been withering on the ground so hard that he may break his own spine. Greed rears its head up, swallowing the mask whole, and makes the gulping motion of someone trying to eat something far too big for its size.
A blinding blue light flashes across the room, smashing into the side of the snake with enough force to nearly knock Gage out from just being close to it. His head swiming there is another flash as he can hear the beast screaming in pain. Off in reality hee only catches bits and peices of speach but he can recognize the voice, it being one of Charilus, the man that had sent him here in the first place with his grand daughter. Another flash and a massive blast sends rubble crashing around the room.
Without his eyes open he couldnt tell what was going on but he did know that someone was scooping him up, trying to drag him through the watery room. The sound of a blade being drawn rings in his ear as one of his eyes happens to flutter open. There he stood, Charilus, sword in hand with his foot on the neck of the snake to cut off its head in a single motion. That was it though, what ever portal that Charilus had appeared through now swollowed Gage up and had him spining though space, his blood loss finally catching up to him as his vision blurred to nothing and then he was unconscious.
