The day goes on, Gage and Elan walking and hiking their way around the mountain, Gage focusing on making sure that they have good footing in the snow. Elan is obviously having a hard time managing, the cold weather getting her to be more solemn and quiet than she would normally be. "Well Elan, how do you like being a field hand? Tired of it yet?" Gage hiked on, his breathing heavy from the altitude, rounding another bend on the mountain side to come face to face with a massive jutting rock face that leads up nearly sixty feet before it levels out to what ever was above.
"Honestly Gage? I think that next time that I do this I am going to let you handle the work and I will keep my face in bed. I can't believe that this is what you do on a regular basis. I knew that it was hard but I am defiantly going to be talking to Grandfather about making sure that you guys have some kind of reparation for having to make runs like this." She wasn't handling the cold very well, her voice shaking and her cheeks red from the sun and wind. Looking up Gage watches the sky for a moment, the white rolling clouds seeming to be a bit darker than they have been over the last few days. Tracing their way along the surface of the rock face they walk, searching for another way up to the platform above them.
And so they wandered the landscape, searching back and forth for some path or route that would lead them up the face in a less...direct path. Gage was confident that he could climb it, having lost his ability to perform much of his soul communication due to the cold but he needed to make sure that Elan would make it too. She was not as hardy as he was so it was almost his moral responsibility to make sure she is okay. The cold wind had already burnt the both of their faces, the sun also having singed them under the eyes. Gage really did hate the heat but in the extreame condition that he was in currently he couldnt help but feel like he would like a desert right now.
Some place so hot and dry that snow is concidered a myth. Gage can feel himself getting colder and colder, the weather starting to make him daydream. Looking back at Elan he spots her, taking off her cap and gloves while trying to unbutton her jacket. "HEY! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!? Your going to freeze to death!" Gage turns around and staggers through the snow to her, his hands fumbling with her jacket as she mumbles to herself about how she was burning up and that it was too hot. She has gotten too cold, she is starting to lose her grip on reality. We need to get to cover. That was when Gage finally looked up to his surroundings.
Upset with how he could have missed it he looks to the sky, the black rolling clouds blotting out the last of the sky overhead. With the clouds came a gradual drop in temputure in the area which is what must have gotten Elan but that was just the prestorm. Once the actual storm hit there was going to be a massive drop in temputure with winds probably capable of scooping them both off the mountain side. Snow caves were not an option in this situation as the winds would be stirring the snow over and over leaving them exposed. Their only choice would be to find some place like a stone or ice cave.
"Elan! There is a storm coming! We need to get out of here!" Gage grabs her shoulders trying to get her to snap back to reality when the first of the gusts hit. The air suddenly dropped over thirty degrees, his lips instantly stinging and his throat burning from the cold. Searching around himself he franticly looks for somewhere that they can hold up, the best location being the rock face. Pulling her closer to the rock face he knows that it is the last place you want to be during a storm as it is a very large possiblity that loose rocks will fall down killing anything underneath.
Gage has been out in a storm once on a mountain side but it was not a snow storm, the clouds overhead dropping rain like a waterfall. Even though it was not a snow storm he felt the temputure drop to just over freezing but now, with the normal tempurture being below freezing the storm would bring subzero temputures, killing anything caught in its winds within hours. Setting her against the stone of the wall he concentrates, doing what he can to draw on his Soul Communication powers to see if there are any caves nearby. The cold though is too intense, the air being enough to make him blind to the outside world.
Cursing he strips his gloves and scrapes through the few feet of snow built up on the stone wall, the cold instantly synging his hands. Placing his hand against a small bare peice of stone he shoves, more force in that one push than in a hundred mile an hour car wreck. He was hoping to just cause an indent, somewhere that they can huddle out of the wind and build up a snow wall in the hopes to buy himself some time to warm up but that was the best case scenario. The wall shatters in a horse sized hole exposing a small cave, something that he had no knowledge of being there.
Hobbling over to Elan he scoops her up with an arm full of snow and starts to cart her over to the cave, carrying her in the entrance out of the snow and setting her down against one wall. Stumbling back to the entrance Gage tucks his hands in his underarms trying to reheat his fingers. Sitting there against the wind for about a minuet he pulls his hands out and raises them, green light swirling around the entrance until a wall of ice builds up and seals off the entire cave from the environment outside. Staggering back to where he thought she was he feels around for her, all he wanted to do was go to sleep, the cold sapping his strength and making him more and more sluggish.
Elan was completely out, her eyes rolling about slowly in her head as she fights for consciousness. "Elan...Elan you have to stay awake." Gage moves closer to her, his entire body numb from the cold. Fighting the urge to lay down he picks her up, holding her in his arms close to his chest in an effort to warm her. It was an intimate position, one that he has only ever done for a rare few women but he felt none of the same feelings as he did then. This was more for the instinct of survival, the natural urge to keep living while nearly freezing to death.
Gage spends as much time as he can sitting there, shuddering intensly from the cold before he finally settles on the fact that if he does not act now he is going to freeze to death in here too. Sturggleing a little he pulls away from Elan and sits on his knees, breathing into his hands to warm them. He was decent at one point at using soul communication to produce fire but the extream cold has all but sealed his Soul Communication away so he was going to have to resort to another form of self preservation to conjure heat. Something that Elan had taught him while he was still in Naruki City, a spell if you could call it that.
Holding out each hand as if he were holding a baseball in both he tries to conjure his energy, the cold making his hands shake and shiver but not enough that he is unable to perform. Filling his palms with energy he summons his Reiatsu into small orbs, each the size of a golfball. Concentrating he rotates both the orbs clockwise, spining them slowly at first so that he can get them up to speed. Once they are spining the once swirling colors now fade together so that they make a single glowing red color.
Bringing the orbs together Gage touches them ever so slightly, the shaking making them bounce together a little harder than he would have liked. As they snap together a flame leaps into life, spurting high enough to get over his head and singe his face. "Oh shit...Okay again." Gage puts them back together once more, softly this time until a small constant flame hops into life. It was light, about the size of a camp fire and hot enough to warm himself and Elan in front of. Pulling the flame closer to Elan he holds it to her torso, using its warmth to revitalise her. Perhaps she would be alright, the heat from the torch being enough to breath life into her limp body.
Several minuets of this finally warm him up enough to get his hands to stop being numb, his legs starting to settle down as he no longer shivers. Holding the flame alive with one hand he uses his right hand to open up her jacket exposing her soaking wet torso. She must have been stuffed with snow from the hiking, the melting ice chilling her faster than him. Using the flame as a torch he spreads it up her length, his own body not freezing cold any more.
"Elan, are you alright?" Gage nudges Elan's shoulder trying to get her to stir. "Elan, I got a little fire going, are you okay? Come on girl, I need you to wake up." Gage sits there for another ten minuets before she finally starts to sit up, sliding backwards to the wall so she has something to lean on.
"Gage, whats going on?" Elan rubs her eyes with two fingers as she feels a massive migraine set in. "All I remember was walking up the mountain and...I think I saw something in the snow but it was so hot..." Elan holds her face up to the fire, her bodies shiver slowing to a chill. "Is this Ignis?" Elan holds her hands up to the fire for a moment and starts to relax. She was actually the one that had taught him how to conjure this fire without the use of Fire Soul Communication.
"Yeah it is, thanks to you it is," Gage smiles and holds the flame steady. Flopping down on his butt he hops back up when he feels water on his pants soak through instantly.
"Oh thats cold," Gage stands up and looks at the ground beneath him for the first time since getting into the cave. Colored black with quickly spreading white lines he realizes that they are actually sitting on top of a layer of ice, cracking beneath their feet. A sudden snap in the ground makes the floor shudder and shift beneath them," Oh no." Then it was all falling, the floor faded away underneath him dropping him and Elan into the dark. Gage started yelling, Elan's screams being louder than his own in his ears. Reaching out and grabbing at her in the dark he pulls her close directing himself so that he is on the bottom.
Then everything was dark, not black like the darkness around him but like he was out. The next thing he knows is that he is laying flat on his belly, Elan speaking gibberish behind him as she straddles his legs, his hands on his back. As soon as he feels the blurry darkness recede he feels a blinding knife like pain in his back. "Ah...aahhh...AHHHH!!!" Gage begins to wither, the pain in his back starting to drive him insane.
Nearly an hour passes, Gage having both yelled himself unconscious and passed out from blood loss. Finally he stirs, his back still aching like he has a knife in it but not like there is a red hot iron poker in it any more. "Elan?" Gage tries to flip over but his back makes him wince in horror. "What happened?" Elan still has her hand on his back, an odd pulsing energy making him turn a bit to look over his shoulder at her.
"Relax Gage, its not as bad as it could be. When we fell you landed on a lance of ice. It ended up going though your rib cage and into your chest cavity but it didn't pierce your lung. I sealed you up from the inside out but your not going to be one hundred percent for a few days." Gage puts his face into the ground, of course this would happen now. A mildly simple job, one where all he has to do is get in, grab the mask and get out suddenly turned into a stop with a hospital at some point. "On top of that I found some under ground heated tunnel. It seems to lead down that crack but the air coming out of it is warm. Maybe we can head down there and find something worth keeping warm by until the storm passes."
