A true free spirit, Abarai Renji could be considered everything that his Captain and the Sixth Division is not. Words and appearances have very little substance to the Lieutenant who, while he may be clumsy with his speech and the manner in which he carries himself, always lets his actions and sword speak for him. When Zabimaru is in hand, none can question the loyalty or skill of Renji though his rash and often impulsive actions in combat do raise a few eyebrows on occasion.
Perhaps it was the hardship of growing up in Inuzuri or his experience in the Eleventh, but Renji is a Shinigami that can truly be said to enjoy life to its very fullest. He can be rather boisterous around his former academy classmates and senpai, Izuru, Momo, and Shuhei and doesn't make a secret of enjoying sake and taiyaki and long naps under shady trees.
However, while his paperwork and possessions in his personal space appear to be messy and the man's speech and general manner is coarse, there is something about the eagerness and exuberance of the Shinigami in a division full of men whose lives are dominated by protocol that can be seen as refreshing. The Lieutenant has learned in time to keep his enthusiasm under control somewhat in official situations, but the overriding air of exuberance remains in the Lieutenant. He undertakes tasks (except, of course, paperwork) with excitement, viewing them as more of a pastime than a job. Any sense of self-restraint he might have picked up in the Sixth Division, though, dissolves as well when he enters combat. Whereas many might think of fighting as a "dirty job" that has to be done for the protection of Soul Society and the human world, Renji's former membership in the Eleventh comes to the forefront in that he actively enjoys battle, whooping and shouting and putting all of his passion and fire into battle.
Again, reflecting his experience with Captain Zaraki, orders in combat are, to him, only absolute in as much as he can follow them while still protecting himself and his friends. Of those two, however, his friends are decidedly the higher priority for the former Rukongai orphan; the Lieutenant would not hesitate to jump in and protect a friend in danger, unless of course that person would not appreciate their fight interrupted such as Ikkaku. Still, even that isn’t absolute, and varies depending on the person involved; there are some, such as Rukia, whom he would defend with his last breath even should they ever request or demand him not to get involved.
Renji is not without his faults. He is known for being quite lazy (a "slacker" would probably the appropriate term), preferring to nap or go drinking with his friends instead of doing the work his Captain has assigned for him and very messy--a general lack of neatness in his handwriting and uniform. He is brash and hot-tempered, an ill-thought-out comment easily capable of irking the Lieutenant and creating a heated exchange, or at the very least being on the receiving end of a rather intimidating glower. He has a tendency to speak or act first and think later, and his impulsiveness can often get him into trouble, sometimes in the form of a physical brawl--which is very much frowned upon by the other Captains (aside from Zaraki, of course).
While he fully accepts his origins and background growing up in the slums of Rukongai, at one point, Renji feared his “common-ness” would deem him unworthy to retain contact with Rukia when she was adopted by the Kuchiki family forty years ago. Renji considers his decision to let Rukia go and remove himself from her life to be his deepest regret, and his greatest fear now is somehow alienating or losing her again. In light of Aizen’s betrayal, he does not want to again be in a position where he cannot hope to defend Rukia on his own--Renji fears being weak, and the desire to be strong, to grow stronger, is one that defines much of his life.
Perhaps the most notable and admirable of Lieutenant Abarai's traits, then, is his ability to stay true to himself. Even in the approximately forty years he has been a shinigami, he has never once forgotten his origins or what he believes in and fights for. He bears his Lieutenant's badge with pride and wields his Zanpakutou as if every battle were life or death, even against the most minor of Hollows. He will not back down from a fight, nor will he back down from pursuing something important to him, even when ordered, as seen by when he faced down his Captain's Bankai to have the chance of being able to help Rukia. Loyalty is entrenched into his being, though he is not afraid to challenge his superiors over something that he believes is wrong, fully willing to accept whatever punishment is due for his insubordination in the aftermath once his friends and his ideals are safe. While his rank is important to him, he knows from a hard life in Rukongai that it means absolutely nothing without being able to share it with those that are close, and will without hesitation defy orders to protect a friend who's life is in danger even if by joining the battle he would be likely to accomplish nothing other than getting himself killed as well.

SEALED FORM
Zabimaru's sealed form resembles a typical katana. It has a rectangular bronze tsuba with a jagged design, and a red handle and sheath.
In their canon appearance, the monkey and snake that make up Zabimaru are fiercely competitive. The monkey is calm while the snake is excitable and antagonistic.
In their non-canon appearance the monkey takes a human female looking form called Saru while the snake takes a similar form named Hebi. Saru is heavily antagonistic toward Renji while Hebi is hyperactive and scatterbrained. The two of them criticize Renji constantly and are huge pains in the ass.
In its Shikai, Zabimaru transforms into an even longer 6-part segmented blade; each segment is wider than the one preceding it from the hilt, with 2 pick-like protrusions on the front and back of each segment, with the ones on the front much longer than the ones on the back. Zabimaru's segments can grow in number almost without limit. The segments are connected by a stretchable thread, making Zabimaru more useful as a whip than an actual sword, however, it can serve as a regular sword just as easily, thanks to Renji's swordsmanship. Zabimaru's guard and handle remain the same in its Shikai release. Because of the way sword doubles as a whip, Renji states that out of all the Zanpakutō wielded by the lieutenants, Zabimaru is the most difficult to master.
SHIKAI ABILITIES
Name: Higa Zekkō (狒牙絶咬, Bite of a Broken Baboon's Fang Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: Unknown Type: Offensive Range: Medium Description: Renji disconnects portions of his Zanpakutou using his reiryoku and is able to attack an enemy with the jagged pieces. This technique leaves Renji defenseless, and disallows him from using his shikai for quite some time. So it's extremely rare to see him use it basically.
Special Note - Bankai Reconstruction: Renji's Bankai holds the ability to detach it's segments, due to the segments being held together by Renji's reiryoku. Even if a segment is damaged Renji can just detach it and reform Zabimaru. Each segment is also exceptionally tough, making it much harder to actually destroy them.
Name: Hikotsu Taihō (狒骨大砲, Baboon Bone Cannon) Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: Unknown Type: Offensive Range: Long Description: Similar to a Cero, Zabimaru fires out a large condensed blast of red reiryoku. This technique is so powerful and requires so much spiritual energy that Zabimaru's segments fall apart after it's used.
Name: Enhanced Higa Zekkō Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: Unknown Type: Offensive Range: Long Description: Essentially a version of Higa Zekkō that Renji uses when in his Bankai. Unlike in his Shikai, however, after using this ability Renji is able to reattach the segments and use it again.
Name: Unnamed Reiatsu Ropes Technique Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: Unknown Type: Binding Range: Long Description: After separating the segments of Zabimaru's Bankai, Renji uses the reiryoku between them as ropes to bind an enemy down after positioning them. These ropes can be broken with enough physical/spiritual strength however, as shown when Yammy breaks them effortlessly.
I bark at the moon, but I don't have the courage to jump and grab it.

commentary
We at this moment head into the decisive battle. Have faith that our blades will not shatter. Have faith that our hearts will not waiver. And even if our paths should diverge, we all share a heart of iron. Swear that even if the ground beneath us should be rent asunder we will live and return to this place again
Waking up in a strange room was nothing new to Renji who had, on numerous occasions, woken up to find himself not in his own bed or room but the Fourth Division barracks. Because he had undoubtedly broken something and couldn’t fix it with more brute force, though he had tried. More than once. Still, this time was different. The color on the walls and the ceiling wasn’t quite the same shade as he was used to. The air didn’t have the smell of antiseptic lingering in it. One thing was familiar, however. Renji’s body hurt. Sitting up after a little effort, he wracked his brain for what he last remembered, what would cause the full-body ache plaguing him. Then it hit him and his eyes went wide. He had wrapped that pink-haired freak and himself up in Zabimaru and then… and then…
Oh hell, Renji, you just had to go and get yourself killed with that kidou stunt, didn’t you? Not like he wasn’t expecting it one day. It was stupid to use that move and he knew it. He could only hope it had done as much damage to Szayel as it apparently did to him. Hopefully. That way Ishida would be able to carry on and help the others find Inoue. Yeah… Renji was okay with being a sacrifice for the greater good in that case, even if he knew his death would cause his friends pain.
…Pain. Wait. You shouldn’t feel pain if you die, should you? It’s a new beginning or something, right? At least that’s what Renji always imagined if a Shinigami were to die. Their reiatsu would get recycled and all that. He looked down at his hands. Nope, they were still there, no fading away or anything. And he still hurt like a bitch. Something was fishy. If he wasn’t back in Soul Society or dead, then surely he was still in Hueco Mundo, but when he looked out the window what he saw didn’t match the desert landscape he had seen before. And then his eyes fell upon a device on the table next to him. Some sort of mobile phone?
Well, there was only one way to find out. Renji fiddled with the buttons and hoped for some positive results.
NOTE: This is a RP sample I did for another site a long time ago. If you want me to write up a fresh one I can but I was feeling lazy at the time so here you go.
