Six days, seventeen hours, fifty three minutes, and twenty two seconds. That was how long it took Theocelese to get what he once called the Las Noches Cafe back up and running. It involved scavenging and salvaging many parts, but his knowledge of kitchen wares and appliances from his human life and fixing them on a tight budget, as well as his growing up in an area where all structural maladies were dealt with by those who lived there, (to the extent they were, of course, always safe to use. Inspections and all) came in hand here. Granted, the stock of supplies were short now a days, he'd need to talk to Seran about a few methods to get the things he needed. The bar would be next, but seeing as how the man had his own supply of fine bottles stashed away in his private quarters, it wasn't too much of a worry. Now he could have a proper breakfast, or even a cup of coffee and some toast, while he turned to the pages of an old newspaper or a novel.
On this last day, once his skill with re-wiring was proven to now hold up and the lights inside the building were bright as ever, the former Eighth Espada was waiting for the leader-figure for the organization of Olympus to arrive. In their first time greeting and discussing with one another, Theocelese spoke of his plans for Las Noches and Emi spoke of her plans for Olympus. At the end of their meet, he made mention for her to come to this place so that they may engage in combat. It would serve to continue to hone both their skills and after the fact? Well..Theocelese had his kitchen again, and as one of his oldest friends once told him, “Any time is a good time for tea”.
It had been something that they had discussed once before, that when the time was appropriate, she would visit Las Noches and the empire that Ares sought to rebuilt. In all honestly, she had expected to be called to battle, to help him cleave the skulls of those who stood against him, but this particular summons was not of that nature. No, instead it was to come and have a friendly spar, and while the man was much stronger than she was, and she doubted she would put even a scratch on him, she would not turn down such a honorable summons. It was not everyday you got to spar with a legend, and she had heard much about his fighting ability, not in the typical sense as an Arrancar, but that of an ancient Greek warrior, as well. Perhaps she would be able to learn a thing or two from him.
In her personal quarters, she stood in front of a 'dummy' that held her battle attire, smirking as she clipped on the various pieces of armor she had fastened by one of the local smiths. In truth it would provide no defense against a spiritual being, but it gave her the appearance as if she truly was a Greek warrior prepared to charge into battle. The Oracle sat on the edge of her bed as she dressed, clipping the last bit of armor on to her leg, grabbing the shield and sword, sheathing one, and wrapping the strap around her shoulder, holstering her shield. "Athena, do you think it wise to go without your guard?" Emilia laughed and turned to face the Oracle. "Of course! I am going to be in the presence of Ares, I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to try and attack me, Hollow or otherwise. Trust me, I'll be fine." The Oracle only nodded as Emi exited her quarters and stepped on to the terrace overlooking the gardens of Olympus. Soon, it would be time to charge into real battle. Opening up her gates, she exited Olympus, and entered Hueco Mundo, stepping out into what appeared to be a small building.
She had not yet visited this part of Las Noches, so to say she was curious would be an understatement. Her head was on a swivel as she strolled the entranceway of the building, taking in all the sights of this place. Ares had referred to it as a cafe but it was an odd choice of location. Still, she didn't question it. Entering the main part of the building, where she was told to meet him, she smiled as she walked, greeting Theo with a nod. "Ares! As always, it is good to see you. I hope you are doing well?" He was one of few people she could genuinely be friendly towards.
Sitting at one of the far end booths, Theocelese would appear to Emilia to be someone else entirely due to his attire and current form of mental occupation. Clothes of a much more relaxed demeanor hung from his form, a blue button up shirt and a pair of black jeans fastened tightly with a belt. Around his left wrist, a watch and in the most strange enough fashion, a pair of glasses hanging barely down at the end of his nose. With both hands he held open a newspaper in foreign writing, which he was reading rather intently with a cigarette in his mouth. Something about having his old “domain” back, a place where he felt completely relaxed and at home just gave him a sense of normality. Sure, there were wars to fight and time for strife, but the time spent to himself waiting for company to arrive was not such a time.
He hadn't noticed Emi's arrival until she spoke out to him, to which he folded back the top half of the newspaper, grinning as a plume of smoke shot out of his nostrils. Carefully, he dog-earred the top right corner of the paper before folding it up and setting it off to the side. The Arrancar rose from his seat, taking the cigarette from his mouth and letting it settle in between his fingers. “Emilia, I'm doing well. Took some time to do repairs around here but I have my coffee and my papers again, it feels good to have these things again at a time of rest.” Theocelese gave his guest a warm and welcoming hug before motioning to the seat. It wasn't his intention, but he hadn't figured Emi would see him in such a way. He looked so...human, and much like an old one at that.
“We're not at war right now, so there is no need to call me by any title. Theo is fine. Have a seat, would you like something to drink or eat?”
To say she was surprised would be an understatement. She had been called here for what she assumed business, but instead found of the greatest warriors of all time dressed as a... human. It made her momentarily stop and look over her own attire, it would seem they were rather mismatched. Still though, she shrugged it off and welcomed his hug, greeting him in return. He asked to speak to him formally, using their names instead of titles, and while she hesitated, she nodded and smiled. "Of course. She was so used to referring to the others by their titles and not names that she had almost forgotten they were more than warriors, that she also had a name. It was not something she used very often.
Removing her weapon and shield and placing it against one of the vacant chairs beside her, she sat across from him. "Wine, if you have it. I do not have much of an appetite these days." Glancing around she took in the cozy little shop, reminding her of a more simple time, when war had not even entered her mind. "I apologize for my... attire. I seem to be over dressed, but I must have misunderstood your summons. Is there something I can do for you? Perhaps help you with?" Social situations were pretty uncommon for her these days, and she often had a hard time telling the two apart. Usually it was all business related and she would go her own way, and whoever she was dealing with at the time, would go theirs.
“No, I very well have the intention to practice combat,” He began, his movements taking him behind the counter, from which he brought up a clear, glass bottle. From the counter top, he took two small cups of the same transparency and walked back over to the table. “Your attire is fine, I just wanted you to be aware that there are things outside of the field of battle. Keep that in your mind, you must have a life outside of war. If you don't, it will consume you and you will be lost.” He sat down and poured the two glasses to the top before taking the spectacles off of his face. “I know you know you can trust me, and heed my words. It is my duty to not only be a battle field commander and adviser, but align your path if it starts to become muddy. I say all of this,” Theocelese paused his words to take a drink long enough to kill half the glass, “I say all of this because you cannot model yourself after something and only take appearances. You must invite the culture, and it is my culture--our culture, to tend to the guests of our home and make them as comfortable and welcomed as possible before attending to matters of business.” He took one more elongated drink, finishing his glass.
Just as he had sat down, the Arrancar stood up and stretched as if he'd just woken up from a nap. “Take your time, have as much of the bottle as you'd like and when you're done, head out the same way I'm taking and follow the path straight. Pardon the mess, I've been renovating as of late and made a direct path to Las Noches' interior. That is where we will practice. I'll be getting ready, I will be there briefly.” With that, Theocelese left the area and Emi to herself to have her wine until she went to the central open area of Las Noches. It would look like a mess on the way, true to his word it looked like construction was under way but it was just a straight path to a doorless opening that revealed the massive, sandy interior. It looked like there was once vegetation here, but whatever was here either hadn't been tended to or the experiment had gone wrong in the best way possible.
At least she hadn't been wrong about the summons, it truly was to hone their fighting abilities. Well, at least she would get some good practice, in comparison to him, she was still far weaker and doubted he would benefit much from this. Still, she would not turn down an invitation from a man so highly regarded. She listened as he talked and poured, taking the glass, nodding, and giving an air cheer to him before taking a swig of her own, while it was true what he said, she knew nothing else. At one time she might have, and perhaps would have avoided war at all costs, but she was no longer that Emilia. She was Athena, reborn to fight, to conquer. She stayed silent however, taking another drink of her wine, savoring the flavor. It had replaced sake, and to be honest, she much preferred this to the rice wine. "My father taught me what he knew of the Greek culture, though he had an obvious bias toward anything war related, so my knowledge is limited, however I always seek to learn. I would not turn a deaf ear to your teachings." She smiled, learning was one of her strong suits. She was quick at it.
Merely nodding once more as he instructed her to meet him in central Las Noches, she lagged behind slightly, sipping on her wine and allowing her thoughts to wander momentarily. There was much that Theo did not know, about her, her father, and their past. She appreciated the concern of balancing her life, but she knew the reality, and it was just not possible. There was nothing left for her. Whatever family she had as a Shinigami had vanished, either abandoning her and Kisho, or fleeing to unknown locations, and she had no desire to seek them out. With her rebirth, she had replaced some of her former self with this newly forged weapon. That's what she was now. Finishing her wine, she stood and grabbed her weapons, replacing them on her body and strolling out the same way Theo had gone. Ignoring the mess of construction, she made her way to the area that they would soon call their battlefield, with a grin on her face, she entered and waited. She didn't expect to win, but she did expect to give it her all.
The Arrancar did as he said, leaving to dress in something more appropriate for battle. A simple brown tunic and a pair of black pants. He waited a little while longer to do his best at suppressing his presence, but even he knew since his latest tribulations the result was a somewhat damaged core. His ability to do something like that was irreparably carved, but at the cost of new power. Though with the mindset of someone like Theocelese, he wasn't one bound for dirty work done in the shadows. He was absently stalling for time to keep Athena on edge. The maddening lack of sound in the sandy plains, mixed with his lack of visual presence was just a way to test the girl. Though Athena wouldn't need wait long, as Theocelese would make his appearance by Stepping in behind her, and rushing in with an attempt to knock the girl over with his shield. He did not do what so many others did in cinematic pictorial pieces where one yelled before a strike, there was no point to giving an enemy the know where you were.
This may have been a spar, and as such Theocelese would be holding back to a degree that no real, life-threatening harm would occur, but there would be bruises, cuts, and gashes. From their previous conversation, this would have been something easily assumed. In fact, his primary goal for this meeting was to further speed up Emi's progress of power. His honor dictated he would see the girl, the daughter of a man he knew and respected through combat, protected in her efforts of war. He too had cause to bring his blade to the table, for the Gotei caused him much harm in the past, but as far as Theocelese knew the girl had no more family. There was no one who could step in and give council or aid. There were surely others whom she had reached out to, but having not known these others, had to make his own assumption they did not have the aspect of their honor in their affairs. For as much as Kisho was a man of war, Theocelese liked to think that if their places were switched, Kisho would do the same as he would. Not out of affection or emotion, but to honor the last words of a fellow soldier who would ask nothing more than to make sure his own daughter was safe.
There was an eerie silence in the dark, cold world. It was not something Emi found especially creepy or scary, it just seemed so out of place, all things considered. There was much power here, countless souls, and yet it still felt so... calm. Even in the situation she was in now, sparring someone who far outclassed her, she felt no fear, no chills up her spine, only anticipation. She would learn from this, grow, perfect her style for future fights. In war, her life would be on the line, she knew Theo would never intentionally cause irreversible damage but she would still treat it as a serious matter. It was her chance to show him just how much her father had taught her, to show she was not some little girl with big dreams. Her father held him in high regard because of his battle prowess, and she did the same. If there was anyone that could teach her anything, it was him. Smiling, she tapped the heels of her feet with the flat edge of the blade, waiting anxiously for Theo to make his appearance.
And make his appearance he did. The familiar, resounding boom of a sonido rang out in her ears, she turned, bringing her shield up in front of her just in time, the metal of both shields colliding with a loud ringing, sending Emi skidding back over the sand. She drove the blade of her sword into the sand, using it as a brake to stop herself. Her entire arm vibrated from the impact, but she ignored it. Had she not defended against it, she probably would have broken a few bones from the impact alone. Grinning, she flash stepped forward, bringing herself directly in front of her. There were no tricks here, no theatrics, and no flashy techniques. This was a fight between warriors, and she would not rely anything but her sword. Keeping her shield up for a quick defense, she swung her sword towards his shoulder, intending a diagnol cut.
Theocelese regained his stance in anticipation for the counter attack, his knees remained bent, feet angled and back straight. He was ready to be on the move in any direction, but he wasn't surprised to see the retort from Emi was to come right from the front. He took two steps forward, his feet more or less shuffling than actually stepping, and dropped his shield. At the angle of the swing, Emi's pommel and the underside of her forearm would make contact with the sharpened edge of his shield. Theocelese did not make a counter attack, not just yet. He gave a nod to her arm, the motion meaning for her to keep her arm where it was. “There are four basic ranges of combat that you already know, but know not in these terms. I have simplified it to A through D. We are at A range right now, Emi. Where are within close proximity to utilize our shields as offensive weapons, and against many Shinigami this is where you and I need to be. As you know, Shinigami weaponry almost always is some form of a Katana, a wonderful weapon versus another of its kind, but very weak against our fighting style. Supposing you fight a Shinigami who wields a Shikai or Bankai with a variation of sword and shield, this is what I would do.” Theocelese spoke while he retained his current stance, but shifted his blade to his shield hand.
With his now free hand, Theocelese took Emi's arm by the wrist and lifted it to the moment just before she made contact with his own shield. With a slow turn, he angled the blade further and moved Emi's arm down. It was now angled to strike at his face. “You must also consider there are few like you, your father and I in this world. We take to combat with our own strength and body, and if we were to have it our way, would only fight with our weapons and nothing more. I am aware of a form of Shinigami magic that once turned my shield into an electrical conduit, and I was forced to discard of it to keep myself from getting shocked. At this range quadrant, I would make my estimations on ending the fight in one single blow, or keeping at a Shinigami and rendering him or her unable to use magic, or Zanpakutou powers.” Towards the last sentence, Theocelese once again took his sword back in his hand and resumed stance. With a nod, he disappeared via Sonido and appeared about five or so meters back. He smacked the shield with the flat of his blade once before putting himself on the defensive again.
She caught her arm on the edge of the shield, a minor cut in her skin but nothing that would distract her, nor cause any permanent damage, however when Theo nodded and began speaking, she did not move. Instead she listened intently, while focusing on the motions he was making, explaining, and demonstrating, how he would counter in the same situation had it been a Shinigami. True, her father had taught her how to fight, to overpower her enemy, but most of the tactics and strategies she had picked up was from reading, and watching the soldiers train. This was better though, a firsthand lesson on not just Greek warfare, but proper technique with a sword and shield. In truth, she hadn't considered that the shield could literally be used as a weapon, of course she knew the basic bashing, pushing, but never thought about the edge. It was something she would keep in mind.
When he separated and distanced himself, she nodded at his request for another attack. The banging of sword on shield only made her smile, this was the type of fight she much preferred. No tricks, no kidou, just skill. She was outmatched, but she would do her best to impress, and learn something. Raising her shield up in front of her, and the sword behind, she rushed forward, dashing towards Theo in a straight line. At first. As she neared, she begin to zig zag, eventually ending on his left, jumping slightly into the air, moving the shield to the side she thrust the sword forward intending to impale as opposed to slash.
It was the best possible thing for him to do, to teach Emilia. While his personal sense of honor would mean he would put himself in front of her to staunch an enemy's advance, he would not always be there. Imparting this knowledge was just a fine substitute, and also doubled as a means to them to work together in the future. That would happen at another time, perhaps in the not too distant future, and when it came down to it those who stood before them would see nothing but terror. Of course, each lesson would have its own subjects and the one to be taught now could have the potential for serious damage to be dealt. His eyes remained on the Vizard, watching her movements and pattern with each step, yet he did not move or act until she was already dedicated to her own strike. A slight parting with the ground and her feat, very theatrical and flashy, perhaps only best used against the biggest brutes lacking in intelligence, and he would be informing her of that very soon. First in action, then, in words and demonstration.
Theocelese's form moved forward, taking a step to his right and darted forward so that the tip of Emilia's sword met with the edge of his shield. His arm loosened at this time of impact, and in turn his shield opened up his torso. In conjunction with this, Theocelese's right foot shot up, aimed at the bottom left side of his current student's own shield. This meant that when the other shield opened, it did so as his foot hit the ground and letting him get in that much closer. Even in the case her shield wasn't kicked, he was still in a position to turn this into a positive. With his arm already cocked and shield propped back with aid from Emilia, Theocelese's form twisted down and to the right as he punched with the edge of his shield. His intended aim was the other shield's edge or the face of it. His right arm, his sword arm, was also aimed in the perfect position for a counter-stab, should the need arise.
In truth it probably wasn't the best attack, but it was something she had to try. Trial and error was the only way to learn, even if it meant getting a few cuts and bruises in the process. This was the point of it all, anyway. To train with Theo meant learning the do's and don'ts, to fill the gaps in knowledge that her father had left. If there was anyone more versed in combat than he, it was Theo, and she would not refuse the chance to learn from him. She narrowed her eyes as the tip of her blade met with the edge of Theo's shield, knowing full well there would be a counter. And she was left open. The kick to her shield put her off balance slightly, 'hopping' on one foot to regain her balance, she turned to face Theo once more.
Just in time, too. He came at her head on, punching forward with his shield, intent on slamming it into her. Raising her shield as she went into a crouched position, she covered her face and head with her own shield allowing his to slide along the rounded part of hers, and immediately thrusting forward with her sword as if to impale him in the inner thigh. It was a dangerous counter, but one she hoped would at least prove she knew more than previously seen.
His response to the attack was rapid, turning on one leg and shooting down to a kneeling position on the other. He was in the position to use his knee to press against the flat of the blade, and with that momentum of dropping down on that knee, pinned the blade to the sand beneath them. With his own blade, he tapped the front of her shield a couple of times before hopping back up to his own two feet. There was a wide grin on his face. “Very good, Emilia. If you want to end a fight like that, aim just a bit higher there to hit the femoral artery. Even a solid knick can do the trick. All you have to do is play on the defensive side, let them get wild and aggressive. Your opponent will bleed out quickly, even more so if you force them on the offensive.” With his input finished, Theocelese vanished with Sonido, and just like last time, appeared about ten yards from Emilia. He gave his own shield two taps, giving her a moment to get ready. But that was it, just a moment. Theocelese followed the signal up by doing one complete spin, and when he was re-positioned to face Emilia, his shield was hurtled towards her like a flying disk, aimed to make contact with either her upper chest, or the upper portion of her shield.
He took off immediately thereafter, with sword in one hand and bare armed on his left, he would see how Emilia was going to fare when it came to more complex attacks. All things varied on her reaction to such a start like this. The end result, he would show her a nifty trick he picked up some time ago that could be used in the very same manner and situations he was putting both himself, and her in. The girl was quick to adapt, and having such an advantage as what he was going to show her was going to put down countless foes. Give them false confidence, then snatch it up and away.
DAY AFTER DAY, LIKE A LIFETIME AWAY, I KEEP HOLDIN' ON
Her counter had been well thought out even in the heat of the battle, but she was still fighting a warrior that far outclassed her, and while it may have proved to be useful on other combatants, it was easily stopped by Theo. He dropped to a knee, pinning her blade to the sand in the process, her gaze fell from sword, to the man before her, but he made no attempt to strike. Instead he tapped his shield and gave her further advice, should her counter work on the next opponent. She nodded and rose to her feet as Theo did the same, tightening her grip on her sword and bending her kneeds slightly. The familiar sound of sonido carried him away and she knew there was more to come.
It was she that would be on the defensive this time, watching as the Arrancar spun and flung his shield towards her, but her own instinct was high as well. She chose not to try and block or parry it, instead she spun on her own foot and twisted away to the right, feeling the large shield tear by her arm as she did so. Completing the spin she faced Theo again, sword and shield at the ready as he charged forward, eyes scanning him. He no longer held a shield but that did not mean he was defenseless, but it could be exploited. She raised her shield slightly higher, to allow a quick defense against a sword strike, however, as he neared she readied her own blade, and would swing down towards his left, unguarded arm, in an attempt to either force him back, or to force him out of position.
At the launch of his shield, the Arrancar would put direct control over it. This was a tactic that he knew some could employ to do exactly what Emilia did, fall right into a trap. As his shield continued in what seemed to be a harmless manner, it traveled a few meters in the air before circling around full force and at the speed of a normal Bala. As Theocelese continued towards Emilia, his sword arm raised upwards. If this were a real fight, he would go for a high-low feint, but this was merely to draw the other God's attention. While his strike would indeed be blocked by the shield, he would also allow his Hierro to act in his own shield's stead. His own swing was at full force, so that Emilia could feel the power behind such a blow for the future. It was so that she would know what to do, and although she would feel the impact upon her arm, she would need to put trust in not just her shield, but every shield beside her. However, after their blades met their respective areas, Theocelese halted his movements and eased up. It was one of the few non-verbal signs he gave to her to show there was a quick lesson to be learned from this.
He nodded once and spoke.
"Turn around."
Suspended at the height of the Vizard's nose was Theocelese's shield, rapidly spinning from its halted position. It was close enough that if she moved even slightly towards it, she'd be bleeding from the tip of her nose. In this deadly silence, the continuously slicing of the air was all that could be heard, at least for the moment.
"Just because I literally threw my defense at you does not mean it cannot come back to strike you. I also have Hierro, though we do not need to worry about any Shinigami possessing such things, they may be able to mimic it artificially. When we fight together Emilia, you needn't worry about these sorts of tricks." The dullness of his emotionless face broke into a grin, and his left hand came to rest against the back of his head. "As the kids say, I'll have your back." After a few scratches, his arm rose as did the shield. It hovered up and over Emilia, sliding back onto his arm.
"Now, what do you say we call it a day? Unless you have any questions, or would like to continue for a bit longer."
Her own counter attack would bear no fruit this time, his Hierro acting like a set of armor that her sword held no hope of piercing. It ricocheted off his skin, sending a small tremor down her arm, but nothing compared to the one she felt through her shield arm. He swung with his full might and struck her shield, though it would not break, it would send a shockwave of pain through her arm, and shoulder, rattling her entire body. The vibrations alone would cause most to falter, but she was a warrior, and held her grip on her shield, grit her teeth, and bore the pain. That's where it ended though, he stood straight, making no movements, instead instructing her to turn around. Curious, she straightened, and slowly turned on her feet.
It was a good thing she had not decided to take any steps forward. The shield he had thrown previously literally cut at the air, spinning directly in front of her face, threatening to cleave her skull in two. It took her by surprise for a moment, but she grinned, then broke out in laughter. "You would have had an awful mess to clean up if I had stepped forward, Theo!"" She understood what he was saying though. In war, you could not rely solely on your own strength, even as a God. A God could strike down another God, and there were some among the Shinigami that posed signifcant threat. Mostly Kenpachi. As the shield floated up and over her head, she turned with it, sheathing her sword and lowering her shield to her side.
"Actually, Theo, there is more I would like to discuss with you. If you have a moment, I would appreciate any time you could give me." There was much to cover, but she needed a new lead.
