Zaraki Kenpachi

Kenpachi Zaraki yearns for battle to an unmatched level. Eternally bloodthirsty and cannot wait to throw himself into a fight, no matter the opponent or odds. Unless the odds are with him, in which case he is just as likely to fight his allies for ruining the fun. Seeing fun as more important than work or teamwork, this can tend to get him in trouble with other captains and the captain commander. But that has not stopped him yet.

The man, the legend...the ego. An extraordinary aura of arrogance and smug satisfaction as he lets the blade slip past his defence, the look of horror and disbelief on his opponents face as his sword, swung with all his strength simply bounces off the skin. Kenpachi lives for these moments almost as much as a good fight. The hope draining from his assailants eyes and the maniacal laugh he can let loose, hiding the disappointment in the knowledge he was wasting his time with an insect. The cause of this could have started on the day he took up the title of Kenpachi, meaning the strongest, defeater of many foes and undefeated himself. The proof of his insatiable lust for fights and power can be seen in his method of gaining the mantle of captaincy, which was by killing the previous captain in front of his own squad. From that day, fear has been most shinigami's reaction when they see him coming.

There are many aspects of his personality that could be mistaken for virtues, such a honour and mercy. However this is false. His so called honour stems from his desire to fight opponents for as long as possible, especially those who can hold their own against him. A desire which often draws his sword at the hint of an opportunity. His methods are much like the Spartans, seeing a death at battle as a worthy death, and he will continue to fight as much as possible until his own end. His mercy would owe itself to something Kenpachi is infamous for throughout the gotei 13. Which is, he will not kill an opponent who is too weak to fight. Saying that if you can still fight, then fight, if not, then stay down, count yourself lucky you survived and learn from the experience to be stronger next time.

That is not to say he has no redeeming qualities. As loyal a man you would be hard pressed to find, to both the gotei 13 and his squad. Do not let his constant beating up, insults, sneering and general coldness trick you. His softer side can be often seen channelled to those he respects in battle and his own lieutenant. Unfortunately for those he respects in fights, once you have proved yourself, he knows you are worth fighting, and you can almost guarantee future fights. So watch your back. And your front. And top. And sides. Just watch out.
