Namonaki Ohori
Honor before reason.
ohori the selfless || male || asexual || non-rogue || squad eleven appears late twenties || died eighteen || has lived four hundred & thirty-four years
APPEARANCE
Ohori stands at approximately 169 centimeters (roughly 5 feet 5 inches) and weighs approximately 59 kilograms. (roughly 130 pounds) His long, silver colored hair is kept in a ponytail utilizing a red colored cloth, his bangs falling down to reach just below the breast. He wears the traditional Shinigami uniform, slightly modified to show his status as heir to the Namonaki family. His status as heir is the only reason he is able to wear his jinbaori style haori, worn as a sign of his nobility rather than authority. He wears a traditional umanori hakama with shin guards which have cloth straps that are used to tie the shin guards to the lower leg. His zanpakutou is kept at his left hip, secured within his obi. Despite what one might be led to believe because of this, Ohori is ambidextrous. His skin is of a tan complexion and beneath his kimono lies numerous scars upon his chest, stomach, and back, gained throughout his time in the afterlife. His eyes are of a brown coloration and his hands are calloused.
Many of the personality traits Ohori exhibits nowadays have been retained from his eighteen years as a living, breathing human. Born into poverty, Ohori has always been a humble and respectful individual who goes out of his way not to take anything in his life for granted. Each day he is alive is considered a blessing for him, and he does not appear to have any large ambitions. A samurai of Edo period Japan, Ohori follows his own personal Bushidou, which translates to Way of the Warrior, that falls closely in line with the typical views samurai of that time held. Primarily Ohori clings to the Eight Virtues: Righteousness, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Sincerity, Honor, Loyalty, and Self-Control. He does not falter in the face of strong adversity, shows the proper amount of respect to higher ups and strangers alike, goes out of his way to be kind to others, does not lie no matter how severe the truth may be, is extremely loyal to his allies, has a surprising amount of tolerance and self-control (to the point other unseated officers have claimed it is exceptionally rare to see Ohori angry), and perhaps above all else is overtly honorable.
Ohori's dedication to honor is so strong that, should he lose it entirely at any point during his afterlife, he would commit seppuku even as a Shinigami and allow his spirit to be cast to the wind. Some might consider Ohori's "Honor Before Reason" mentality foolish. This was especially apparent during his first encounter with an Arrancar in which he openly challenged his foe to a duel rather than heeding his allies' strategy of a sneak attack. Though he won the encounter, his ear was chewed out immensely and he was forced to apologize and move on. While conflicts between loyalty and honor do exist in Ohori's subconscious, due to his tendency to place honor before all else he consistently puts himself in positions where he might find himself under fire from his superiors. This is especially true when dealing with Hollow beings, due to the Gotei 13's way of viewing them. While Ohori shares this view when it concerns the barely sentient Hollow, Arrancar or Hollow with enough sentience that they can understand him are completely different cases and he will always do what he can to judge whether or not a Hollow is properly sentient before engaging them.
Though he does not lie, Ohori is not very open about his living years and does what he can to try and focus on his years in the afterlife. He still carries a great deal of shame on how things went down despite having "absolved himself" at the Battle of Sekigahara on October 21st, 1600. It is because of these events that family is a very important deal to the samurai, and is why he wears his family's haori despite not being a huge fan of gaudy clothing as well as why he readily accepted the position of heir to the Namonaki line despite having no experience in such matters. He will readily lay down his life for the Namonaki line, and can be found boldly stating who he is and what clan he hails from to both his enemies and allies alike. Because of his attitude toward his family and those in need, over time Ohori gained the title of "Ohori the Selfless" and even though he boldly states his family name and given name proudly, he finds himself far more embarrassed over this title and has attempted to stop people from using it to no avail.
During his trips back to Japan, Ohori found himself absolutely overwhelmed by how much culture has changed and has grown a large fascination in discovering just how different Japan is to the Japan he knew during his life. This comes out in a bit of an obsession as he frequently takes things from modern era Japan and keeps them within his section of Squad Eleven's barracks. His misunderstanding over certain things has led to many a funny situation, though his childlike attitude when dealing with such things has also gained the ire of the more battle hardened Squad Eleven Shinigami. Speaking of, while engaged in battle Ohori keeps himself just as calm as he always does and fights exceptionally fairly, finding he would rather die in combat than use dirty tactics or involve others. Should there be no choice he will accept the help of others, but no matter what he will not use underhanded means to win a fight.
HISTORY
As stated above, Ohori was born into poverty in the year 1582 in the Edo period of Japan. When he was just a young boy he was sold off to a local daimyo by his parents so that they could afford to eat. The daimyo was a cruel man and only ever referred to him as "boy." Due to this cruel conditions, Ohori stole one of the daimyo's katanas and fled his castle, coming across a ronin during his attempt to flee. When some of the daimyo's men attempted to capture Ohori and bring him back the ronin cut them down mercilessly and fled the scene shortly after with the boy. Ohori was exceptionally thankful to the man, who said he was going to take the boy under his wing as a pupil. He never gave Ohori his name, only telling him to refer to him as "Master", though he is the one who gave Ohori his personal name in the first place. Over time, Ohori was taught not only the way of the sword but also Bushidou, in hopes that Ohori could live a far more honorable and just life than the Master had.
As time passed and Ohori grew older, he and his Master would travel the countrysides raising their swords for the less fortunate. It was a long and arduous life, Ohori being even worse off than he had been under the daimyo's captivity, but rewarding in it's own way. Sure, they didn't have a lot of food but they felt good about themselves and were frequently welcomed into poor villages where they were hailed as heroes. As Ohori began to reach his mid teen years, his Master revealed to him why he had become a ronin. It turned out that the daimyo Ohori had been sold to was predated by a much kinder, humbler daimyo, and it was this daimyo that Ohori's Master was in service of. The current daimyo was one of the former daimyo's hatamoto at the time and had hired a group of assassins to kill him. Though Ohori's Master attempted to fight them off, his arrogance allowed the assassins to kill the daimyo and Ohori's Master was forced to flee the scene. Though he attempted to commit seppuku he was unable to, and to this day wanders as a ronin shamed. Ohori's Master finally revealed his name, and it turned out that he had given Ohori his name because that had been his own. He wished for Ohori to live the life he never could, and Ohori promised his Master he would go out of his wa to do so.
Things would not stay this way for very long. Eventually the daimyo's men caught up with the two Ohori and the younger, much like the older, attempted to fight off as many as possible on his own. Unlike Ohori's Master, however, he attempted to cut down the daimyo's men so that his Master had less to deal with himself. However, despite being an act of good faith rather than arrogance, fate would not be so kind. The daimyo's men were able to kill the elder Ohori, and the younger was forced to flee the scene. Much like his Master, Ohori was unable to commit seppuku. Unlike his Master, however, Ohori refused to live the life of a ronin. Catching word of a battle that was going to occur soon between two enemy forces, at the age of eighteen years old Ohori found himself upon the land of Sekigahara. On October 21, 1600, Ohori fought men from both the Tokugawa and Toyotomi forces and was slain in honorable combat. The last thing the living Ohori would see before his world faded to black was the cruel sun hanging high in the sky, as if it were mocking his attempt at absolving himself of his dishonor.
Many years later, Ohori would find himself living a very similar lifestyle in the Rukongai. His memories of his living life were clear as day, which was why he made it his mission to help whatever downtrodden people he could. It took him a while to gain a sword once more but after years of practice, Ohori would pick the talent back up once more. During one night, Ohori would come across a group of bandits who had a young girl kidnapped. She was dressed in ornate clothing and crying out for help, and Ohori could not possibly pass this scenario and do nothing. Though he fought as hard as he could, Ohori was only able to cut down one of them before being outnumbered. Due to the timely arrival of a man by the name of Suzuroshi Oka and men loyal to the Namonaki family line, Ohori not only narrowly avoided dying but also succeeded in protecting the girl. After passing out, Ohori awoke in a small ancient Japanese style castle in the Seireitei belonging to the lesser noble family the Namonaki. There the girl stood alongside Oka and a man who introduced himself as Namonaki Mouri, head of the Namonaki family. The group congratulated Ohori for his efforts and praised his swordsmanship, offering him a place as a member of the family. It was a lot to take in, but his wishes to no longer live the life of a "ronin" as well as a desire to have a family once more caused him to accept.
Over time, Ohori would gain a strong reputation for himself. The Namonaki family taught him their unique brand of swordsmanship and informed him even further on the world he had entered. He was well fed, well dressed, and even gained an older brother-type relationship with Mouri's daughter Kiyoko. Due to numerous excursions to the Rukongai, either assisting people out who cried for help or transporting food or money to the poorer districts from the humble Namonaki famly, Mouri soon named Ohori as his immediate successor. Rather than gaining ire from those who expected to be next in line, Ohori was met with praise he was unaware existed. He gladly accepted the position, but claimed there was a stipulation: He would not accept the position officially until he graduated the Shinigami Academy. It was here that he expressed his desire to become a Shinigami, and his father met Ohori's resolve with a firm grin and joyous support. Ohori's time at the Academy was nothing highly significant, apart from his skills in Kidou severely lacking while his skills in swordsmanship and stepping were excellent.
Eventually Ohori would graduate the Shinigami Academy and be awarded his asauchi, soon after taking his position as heir to the Namonaki family line and wearing the signature haori each heir of the family was expected to wear. Still undecided on which squad to join, Ohori decided to communicate with the spirit that existed inside of his blade. What he saw shocked him harshly enough that it knocked him out of his concentration and he was forced to do so again. Standing in front of him was the face of his old Master, who claimed that he simply took the form that was most recognizable to him and that he was not whom he appeared to be. Various trials were put forth to Ohori over the next many years, testing each of the Eight Virtues he held near and dear. After gaining the name of his sword and, thusly, the Shikai, Ohori waited until he had unlocked the four abilities granted to him before gathering his family in the dojo part of the castle and allowing them to witness his Shikai. He was once again met with praise and any naysayers that might have been left against his right to take his father's place were silenced at the brilliant display.
It has been many years since the day Ohori mastered his Shikai, and he has been in many different encounters including the ones mentioned above in the Personality area. He has gained the title of "Ohori the Selfless" for his kind nature, though he rejects the title due to embarrassment, and has shown a high amount of interest in modern day Japan. He still takes trips to the Rukongai to help out the poorer districts and has officially joined Squad Eleven due to it falling closest in line moreso than the other squads. Though he is a bit nervous around figures such as his captain, as well as any members of the squad who would put winning over honorable combat, he feels entirely right about his decision and resumes to get even better with his swordsmanship and continues to be groomed by different members of the Namonaki and related families. Thankfully Mouri does not appear to be passing away or under threat of assassination anytime soon, but only time will tell when Mouri's reign will end and Ohori's will begin.
Eishōhaki (詠唱破棄, "Incantation Abandonment"): is the skill in which a Kidō practitioner skips using a spoken incantation completely, but it drastically weakens the spell. This is applied as a 1-2 tier drop in the spells power depending on ones Kidou mastery, 2 for Beginner up to Advanced, and 1 for Mastered and above. However this also lowers the spells cooldown to match the lowered tier, to a minimum of Tier I.e.g A Tier IV Kidou be cast with Eishohaki as a tier II, its cooldown will also be the same at 0 posts.
BATTLE SKILLS
Name: Wing Chun Class: Hand to Hand Style Tier: I Type: Supplementary Range: Self Duration: N/A Cooldown: N/A Description: Wing Chun is a heavily spiritual martial arts. It's said to be learned mainly by monks, but it appears often outside of buddhist temples. Wing Chun is yet another non-sport Martial Arts, and rather then even a self-defense only art, is often taught to rather learn equality and power amongst the soul. It's used as a way of relaxation, and a way of spiritual alignment.
Wing Chun is incredibly unique as a martial arts, as most do not have fluid aerodynamics, meaning if your punch fails to connect, your posture, stance, and movement is effected. With Wing Chun, none of that is effected, such a way of fighting is called Uncommitted Techniques, and from such a way of fighting a user of Wing Chun can easily link together attacks with fluid, damaging motions, and even if one or two do not connect the combo is not stopped.
Wing Chun is hard to learn outside of being a monk. While certainly you could go and learn from a teacher who was once a monk and knows the style, it's incredibly unlikely. Because of this, Wing Chun is incredibly rare to the outside world, and as thus lacks very little counterplay on how to fight against it. (Does not count as one of the five starting techs)
Name: Ekitai [Liquid] Class: Hand to Hand Technique Tier: II Type: Supplementary / Offensive Range: Self Duration: Instant Cooldown: N/A Description: Ekitai is a technique in which the user of Wing Chun utilizes their natural ability to string together and connect movements with forceful strikes with the side of their hands. Ekitai is a group of hits while moving around the opponent, the maximum being 11 hits while the least being 1. The use of Ekitai is not to deal tremendous amounts of damage but to rather hinder the opponent by hitting places like the calf, shoulder, and other press-points to induce numbing where it hits and eventually cause permanent loss of control if done constantly. (1/5 Starting Techs)
Name: Hebi [Snake] Class: Hand to Hand Technique Tier: III Type: Offensive Range: Self Duration: Instant Cooldown: N/A Description: Hebi, or snake, is half of the side of a story of one of the founders of Wing Chun. It speaks of one of the first masters of Wing Chun watching a crane and a snake fight, and he watched how quick the snake snapped at the crane, and how fluid his movements was. This master, one of two, taught what could be considered to be the yang of Wing Chun, teaching his disciples how to dispatch of enemies quickly and coldly. Hebi was one of the main techniques, which was a play on a pressure point on any part of the body with such power that it caused permanent damage. Instead of relying on a pressure point, though, the user can enhance his attack with his own spiritual energy and slam his hand into a limb of the opponent as a jab, and as long as it locks into a joint it will cause the nerve-endings to die from the impact, rendering the arm useless (unless they can control it without the nerves). (2/5 Starting Techs)
Name: Kureen [Crane] Class: Hand to Hand Technique Tier: III Type: Defensive Range: Self Duration: Instant Cooldown: N/A Description: Kureen, or crane, is the second half of a story of some of the founders of Wing Chun. This side of the story speaks of a second master watching the fight with intrest, but instead of focusing on the snake, he watched the crane. Whenever the snake would go in to bite or kill, the crane would dodge away with grace and knock him back, promptly returning it's own attack back onto it. From this, he taught his own discplies the way of "Kureen", and followed the way of yin, to show how ones mindless brute force could be used against them. By taking in the impact of any ability on any part of the body, the ability will be instantly rebounded, dealing no damage to either the user of Kureen or the user of the ability, simply deflecting it off any part of the user's body. (3/5 Starting Techs)
Name: Namonaki-ryu Class: Weapon Skill Tier: I Type: Supplementary Range: Self Duration: N/A Cooldown: N/A Description: Namonaki-ryu is the sword fighting school of the Namonaki clan, passed down from generation to generation. Though the school teaches the basic disciplines, it's main focus is in it's iaijutsu techniques. Practitioners of Namonaki-ryu focus a great deal of discipline on techniques that revolve around drawing a sword from it's scabbard. This school involves offensive and defensive techniques, though primarily focuses itself upon defense to fit in line with the founder's personal philosophy: "Draw your sword in defense, not in brutish offense." (4/5 Starting Techs)
Name: Zanshin [Remaining Mind] Class: Weapon Skill Tier: III Type: Defensive Range: Self Duration: Instant Cooldown: N/A Description: Zanshin is an iaijutsu technique of the Namonaki-ryu sword school. It's main focus is to defend oneself from an oncoming blow. Utilized only in a reactionary fashion, the user of Zanshin draws their blade fast enough to block or deflect an opponent's weapon strike. Most commonly this ability is used in the following way: The user draws their weapon, deflects an opponent's strike through their sword draw, then returns their sword into it's scabbard. It is possible, however, for the user to draw their weapon and, instead of deflecting the opponent's strike in that movement, block their strike instead. In doing so, this allows the user to keep their weapon drawn so that they can continue fighting more effectually. (5/5 Starting Techs)
Name: Shunpo (Flash Steps) Class: Stepping Type: Stepping Range: N/A Duration: N/A Cooldown: N/A Tier: I Description: A movement technique that allows the user to move extremely quickly over short distances. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. Therefore what determines the level of skill in a user for Shunpo is best characterized by how fast one can get from A to B in the least amount of steps.

SPIRIT APPEARANCE
Meiyo takes the familiar appearance of Ohori's old Master. He is a chiseled man in his forties, who stands at 182 centimeters (roughly 5 feet 9 inches) and weighs approximately 70 kilograms. (roughly 154 pounds)
Extremely similar to Ohori, Meiyo follows the Eight Virtues of Bushidou and exhibits personality traits similar to Ohori's old Master. The only difference being that unlike Ohori's old Master, Meiyo is not regretful and instead looks toward the rising sun rather than the setting sun.
INNER WORLD
Meiyo's inner world takes the appearance of an ancient Japanese dirt road, with greenery to either side.
SHIKAI
SHIKAI APPEARANCE
Meiyo's appearance does not change when it enters Shikai. Instead, Ohori's reiatsu covers the blade as if it were on fire and the fire were a silver color. At the same time, Ohori's eyes shine a bright silver color.
SHIKAI ABILITIES
Name: Tranquility Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: III Type: Supplementary Range: Self Duration: 1~7 Cooldown: N/A Description: Through uttering the phrase "I am at peace.", Ohori is able to activate this ability and increase his hearing and sight. This allows him to simultaneously see 360 degrees around his body while also allowing his hearing to be sensitive enough to pick up an opponent's movement, allowing him to strategize against their attacks.
Name: Counterattack Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: III Type: Defensive / Offensive Range: Short Duration: Instant Cooldown: N/A Description: A very simple technique. While the above technique is active, Ohori utilizes the scabbard of his zanpakutou to deflect an opponent's attack, then fluidly counterattacks with his zanpakutou.
Name: Three Wings Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: IV Type: Offensive Range: Short Duration: Instant Cooldown: 1 Post Description: Three Wings is a blindingly fast iaijutsu technique. Ohori draws his zanpakutou from it's scabbard and delivers three swift slashes: One horizontal, one vertical, and one diagonal, returning his zanpakutou to it's scabbard in the same gesture. The ability is meant to catch opponents off guard and/or overwhelm them.
Name: Titan's Blade Class: Zanpakutou Spirit Tier: IV Type: Defensive Range: Short Duration: Instant Cooldown: 1 Post Description: Titan's Blade, much like it's predecessor, is a blindingly fast iaijutsu technique. Rather than being used to overwhelm an opponent, Titan's Blade is instant used to defend oneself against an opponent's attack. The special nature of the technique is it's ability to "deflect" reiryoku and reishi abilities. Rather than being three swift slashes, it is a single fluid movement in which the user draws their zanpakutou, slashes, and returns it to their scabbard. The slash is able to "deflect" reiryoku and reishi attacks provided conditions are met (The sword connects, advantages, etc.) and is the most "powerful" skill in Meiyo's shikai. It was also the hardest technique for Ohori to master.
