Blodeuwen was sat at her desk, reviewing the papers of the next applicant for promotion. She had once been told that both wage-bargaining and promotions were inherently unfair on female employees, who were apparently less likely to ask for promotion and so Blodeuwen had informed shinigami at all levels of management to recommend underlings. About half so far had been successful. The next applicant, however, had nominated herself, much to Blodeuwen's dismay. She was relatively green to the Kidoshu, but she had experience with the second division. She'd been welcomed into the Kidoshu some time ago, by the looks of it due to the remarkable properties of her shikai release but a quick consultation with Blod's sister, Suki, she'd found that the girl had previously on-track to join the Onmitsuko and that had all ended. She looked glumly down at the application before her:
"PROMOTION REQUEST FOR VANESSA VORJEN Position: 2nd division Kidoshu Representative"
It was entirely inappropriate for Blodeuwen to grant the promotion she'd requested. Her history dictated that she would be completely unsuited for the role. Regardless, she probably deserved a promotion due to her newfound skill in kido, and her help assuming temp work as a holer after Kíla and Thíla, the Corps' best had been put out of commission had been invaluable thus far in combatting the rampant holes that had began opening up everywhere. She glumly waved her in, not looking forward to crushing someone's dream.

Vanessa was admittedly nervous. She annoyed herself, waiting outside of the Soshi's office, by realizing she had a kind of unconscious tic; that was, she was touching the tips of the fingers of one hand using the index finger of the other, and then alternating hands. Unable to stop herself unconsciously falling into the habit, she instead tried to distract herself from it by reciting scraps of poetry and kido incantations in her head. It wasn't long before she saw the soshi beckon her in. She got to her feet, obliging, and entered the office, closing the sliding door shut behind her with delicacy. There was a slight tinkle as she moved her hands from her zanpakuto which were as always worn upon her wrists as gauntlets.
"Good afternoon mistress Blodeuwen. I hope the day finds you well." she greeted the soshi eloquently, with a bow, before sitting before her and awaiting what she had to say. Despite her nerves she felt confident, there had been a slight swagger in her walk- she was qualified, strong, and experienced. She totally had this. She knew that virtually no-one else had applied for the position, she had tied in the 2nd squad, making her clearly the best candidate for the job. She'd been told the interview was relatively painless, usually a pleasantry, and nothing more. The soshi knew everyone to some degree, and would recnognise how much she fit the role.

Blodeuwen waved her to sit and she did. She looked self-assured and cocksure, that seemed certain. Blod had seen Nessa a couple of times before; she'd taken up the work of a holer but wasn't especially good at it. She didn't really appreciate the young shinigami's attitude or her arrogance, but she stuck to the rules and did what she was told without fault. She was frustrated that they hadn't managed to get their hands on her straight out of the academy, it would take a long time to undo the damage that the second division had wrought, she felt.
"Well enough Vanessa. Now the interview process is informal, you've received commendations from your supervisors, and your cover letter seems good but I'd just like to ask a few questions, I hope that's okay with you." Blodeuwen's manner was sweet but she didn't wait for a response before continuing. "Firstly; why exactly did you apply for the position?" she asked in as standard a tone as she could. It was a super obvious ploy but Blod wondered if she would say anything that immediately marked her as inappropriate for the position though she couldn't exactly hold her breath with anticipation.
Vanessa's stomach tightened. There was something about the way the soshi asked her that; why had she applied for the role. As if there was a wrong answer. She hadn't considered there was a wrong answer. She hesitated, concern passing over her face. "Uhm, well..." she began, floundering. Was her connections to the 2nd division a weakness, not a strength? Were they afraid her transfer from there would make her unsuitable?
"I'm interested in representing the Kido Corps' interests in the Gotei 13. My experience working within the Court Guard Squads means that I understand the nicities of being there and won't step on any toes." she said lamely, but her face was flushed. She had carefully avoided mentioning her stint in the second division particularly, but it would be on the Soshi's mind. She had been so sure beforehand, it had seemed obvious that she would get it. But now the soshi might take away her opportunity forever. She flushed an even deeper shade of red, but resolved to prove herself on the next question so she could go where she wanted to go. She couldn't give up yet! Not now, not when she was so close after all this time.

"Interesting." Blodeuwen said, smiling encouragingly. Vanessa seemed upset- she supposed she'd break the news shortly, since they both probably knew it was coming. Another question first;
"What strengths do you have that you think would make you suitable?" she quizzed, her eyes twinkling. Blodeuwen felt a motherly surge of affection for the shinigami who was doing her all to hold herself together before the Soshi and she felt unbearably cruel. The burdens of leadership were heavy and she bore them alone, without even a fuku-kidocho to help spread the weight. She wondered how she would have reacted if she felt she had to take a step backwards in her career. Until recently, most likely not an issue. She had enjoyed her time as a gopher as it meant she had lots of time to hone her kido abilities. Which had paid off in the end for as soon as she had been noticed she had shot up through the ranks, and been given the highest honour. Vanessa, Blodeuwen recognized, had the potential to become even more powerful than she, for her shikai had some of the same powers, but some that were even stronger. But she had to do her time, just like everyone else.
Vanessa pondered the next question. Not loaded. She took a deep breath, reflected for a moment, let out a hesitation before answering. "Well I've been working hard and I'm quite personable." That much at least was true, Vanessa wasn't popular but she had friends and she was the "leader" of her little group. "Having worked within the Gotei I do know how things work there. I also don't really mind taking time out of my career here to do it." That was the main issue with Gotei 13 Liaison Officers- the career prospects were terrible during your placement and shinigami lived long enough that that could be a very long time. But it was true- if she got to return to her squad she would have time to grow her power while still being happy- perhaps rising through the ranks when she returned to the Kido corps later.
"Please, Mistress Blodeuwen. I really want this job." she asked her superior, imploringly. She wasn't sure how she would react if she didn't get it but she hoped that Blod would find it in her heart to let her have it. She must have known how much it meant to her! She had to have it.

Blodeuwen smiled sadly at Vanessa. Her pleading face really made Blodeuwen's mothering instincts kick in, she wanted to take the younger Shinigami who felt she had lost so much into her bosom and cradle her. Such a thing would be unseemly and so she instead opted to maintain a stiff upper lip. Hopefully she wouldn't cry, Blod wasn't sure she would be able to stop herself crying if she did. She had never felt like such a bad person before! Jeez, leadership was super tough.
"Well Vanessa, looking at all the evidence available, I'd firstly like to tell you that you definitely merit promotion. You've worked hard since joining us here. But I'm not sure the 2nd division post is entirely suitable. It is for this reason you are being promoted to Kido Corps representative within the twelfth divison." she said. They desperately needed someone in squad twelve- the job was a shoe in to becoming the next network operator, and it had great potential for engineering jobs too. Yes indeed, she was hardly giving Vanessa a raw deal even if it wasn't exactly what she wanted. She indicated that the younger shinigami was now dismissed- there would be absolutely no arguments about this.
