Senta was at the training grounds. After any number of recent risqué run-ins with people that could stomp him he realized that he needed to "git gud." Like any dutiful shinigami he had identified a hole in his strengths- in this case, the pitiful number of kido he could cast from memory. And he had asked his Auntie Blod for some spells he could learn that would be appropriate to his level. She had pondered for just a second before retrieving some scrolls and hanging them off to him- she advised him to start small, and had given him three kido. They seemed perfect- he couldn't help but marvel at her ability to know which kido were perfect for any situation. Then again she was the Soshi of the Kidoshu... Which in some ways, he realized, put her authoritatively almost on par with the captain commander. What a terrifying turn of events. He had just plopped down at the training grounds, hoping he wouldn't run into his mother or anyone else he knew, and was reading through the first scroll. Well it didn't seem too hard now did it? The kido had a wide area, so he'd firstly find an unoccupied spot.
The area was cleared fairly quicksharp, and he began. The first kido was Okasen- Senta took an approach to learning kido that involved, first, the rote memorization of the incantations. Secondly, that out of the way he explored how the kido were constructed. What way did you have to put your reiatsu together in order to create that effect? Kido were general techniques that all shinigami could use and as a result, they required a more general approach to reiatsu. Other techniques seemed to "roll off the tongue" in comparison. Lastly of course, he would practice forming the technique, constructing it without even launching it. Senta had actually not appeared as a total idiot at all during his time as a trainee shinigami, only because he had this mentality of preparation. It was borne of intense, advanced laziness. Senta was fully aware that if he didn't spend time preparing the amount of extra work dumped on him would far more than compensate. He considered himself a connoisseur of laziness, a kind of expert and so he was more than prepared to put the work in to save effort in the long run. It was like walking 20m to get a key as opposed to kicking a door down.
Firstly, okasen. "Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west!" Such an unwieldy incantation. Regardless he read the scroll- the idea was to gather the energy at a focal point- a zanpakuto, a limb, whatever. It then seemed that he was required to spread the gathered reiryoku out, into a kind of arc or a wedge. He'd seen it done before, and it seemed simple enough he guessed. He noted that it was imperative to also impart the forward momentum to the reiryoku before finishing the incantation and releasing the wide yellow wedge of energy. This, he felt, would be key. He supposed that all that was left to do was to actually put those principles into practice. Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west! he repeated in his head, making sure he wouldn't stumble at any point while he was casting. He had a memory like a sieve and he was so bad at recalling these stupid incantations.
He drew Agjram and and held him horizontally before himself. He gathered his reiryoku and applied it, creating a bright pink spot in front of the sword, spreading it out. Wait, pink!? He had no idea how or why reiatsu took on the colour it did but he was sure that wasn't right at all. He let the pent up energy release gently before considering. Okasen- a flash of yellow fire. Then he realized- he had been considering the kind of damage it would do to concussive, or something similar but it was actually closer to a raw torrent of burning energy. Almost like lightning, or something. With that in mind, Senta tried again and this time, the little point of gathered energy was yellow and crackling. Aha! Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west! he repeated in his head, weary of forgetting. He spread the energy out across Agjram's blade, spitting and hissing all the while. Satisfied that it was what he wanted, he withdrew the energy, letting it fizzle out completely. Time to try again, he supposed.
Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west! He was nearly sure that it was stuck in his mind forever now. He once again created that little crackling pinpoint of yellow light, and spread it out across his zanpakuto, into a wide arc. Seemed to be the real deal, as far as he could tell. Next, he supposed he should actually attempt to launch the kido. He took a deep breath as for the third time he le the energy disappear.
"Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west." he said drily as he formed the wedge. "Hado thirty two, Okasen!" his voice rose in timbre slightly and the kido fired. Except it didn't. The energy erupted around Senta and he quickly summoned up his aura-shield, as the would-be okasen crackled all around him, before ending. Right- he had to give it forward momentum before he released it. What an idiot.
{Spoiler}Name: Aura-Shield Class: Reiryoku Techniques Tier: II Type: Defensive Range: Self Description: The user pulls their arms out to either side of them and a golden aura surrounds them, protecting them from superficial damage from an attack. The aura will last for 2 posts before needing to be re-summoned.
Senta suckered in another deep breath. Okay take two. He kept his shield up just in case, and gathered the reiryoku upon his zanpakuto, and spread it out as he spoke the incantation. "Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west." He then gave the wedge a push forwards, such that the reiryoku strained against the envelope it was contained within, before releasing it, saying: "Hado thirty two, Okasen!", and as he did the wide arc that he was familiar with shot forward from him, grazing the landscape and smashing into and bending around the target dummy he was shooting at. Damn! A pretty good shot. It had been slow though- he had cast the kido but he needed to attain fluency in it. And so he started again.
This time he formed the wedge in mere moments. He incanted as he did so: "Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and iron, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! The nimbus swirls, Ash reeks, Soar on to the west." and before he had even finished, he launched the kido forward. "Hado thirty two, Okasen!" he said and it exploded outwards.
Next on the list was Sokatsui. Blodeuwen had told him that this particular kido was another useful offensive spell, for its speed if nothing else. It was at least ten times the speed of a hollow's cero and while not as powerful that could only be a good thing. He had examined it- the idea was to draw reiryoku in in a kind of swirl while incanting. Then upon the release of the spell it would launch forward in a kind of cone or cylinder of burning reiryoku. He figured it would be similar to the last kido, but this time with a bright, burning blue energy. The swirling, he observed was to ensure the aiming of the delicate beam- with such high speed and small width, he needed to be sure that the reiryoku had no angular momentum before he launched it as any slight inhomogeneity could send it going anywhichway. Senta didn't really understand the specifics of monentum conservation, but if he needed to make a swirly blob of energy then he was capable of doing that. He wasn't the smartest shinigami in the squad but he was good with his hands- good at vocational skills. Brawn over brain. Not that he had much brawn either.
Confusingly the incantation for this one started exactly the same as the last one, so Senta knew he would probably get way confused. Oh well, he went over it in his head; Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws! Confusing. Either way, he stowed his zanpakuto, double checked the scroll to make certain, and then raised his palm. He focused his reiatsu into it, abright blue flame of energy that burned incandescent. He then realized that he had no idea how to make it spin- he just sort of assembled it. He let it disappear before thinking about it for a second. He supposed that if he focused the reiryoku in one spot but kind of input it some radius out of that spot, it would orbit around, kind of how the moon went around the earth. He had enough control of his reiatsu to create a spherical envelope so he tried it, and by some miracle it worked! He had a glowing blue sphere of reiryoku sat just before his hand.
He repeated the incantation in his head once more: Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws! He let the blue sphere dissipate. It was difficult to control- it seemed to want to leap forward of its own accord, he guessed probably due to the energy structure. He wondered if these kido were the same for everyone who learned them, the precise way they were controlled or if it differed according to one's reiatsu. Regardless, he focused on pouring swirling reiryoku into the palm of his hand once more, but it seemed to be too fast this time- he had not focused it enough. He threw the blob with all his might into the air where it exploded, gathering strange looks from shinigami around. Not quite the function of the kido, but oh well. He breathed deeply, soothing the adrenaline rush before trying again. This time he pooled the reiryoku perfectly and held it there for several moments before letting it slowly leak away. Right- it seemed he was ready for the real deal now.
Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws! or was it wrath of the west? Dammit he thought he had it. He peeked at the scroll which confirmed he was right the first time. He laid it out in front of him so that he could read off of it as he cast, weighing it down with some nearby pebbles. He took a deep breath and began to gather energy.
"Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!" he said, the spiralling orb fully formed. Hadou thirty three, soukatsui!" he said, and the energy erupted forward in a wide cone which spread out into adjacent practice fields. He shouted his apologies to the shinigami whose sparring session had been interrupted. Right- he had to focus on keeping the fire narrow so it was effective. Luckily it hadn't been a problem this time, but he really had to make sure not to make the same mistake twice.
