Toshiro guided his hands with a delicate grip on the wooden weapon. His feet move in a certain grace like a dancing master building a grand performance. He guided his weight forward with his step, giving his weapon a vigour his arms alone were incapable of. The captain slashes left, his opponent stands tall, thinking he was ably bracing himself to block. Toshiro breaks through easily, the wooden blade of his opponent cluttering to the ground. He was to train them, not go easy on them.
“Dead.” Said Toshiro with a hint of mocking in his voice.
He stepped back and rested the wooden sword across his shoulder. “I said a hundred times, your stance is too rigid. You could have easily blocked that had you moved to compensate.” His criticism was honest, no longer a mocking. The shinigami nodded, taking his sword as he stood back for the next person.
A captain of the Gotei 13 carries a great deal of responsibilities. One of many is training their Squad members. Some of the captains do not bother practising with their men, perhaps they feel it is a waste of time, or legislative tasks overwhelm them. Almost in spite of that, Captain Hitsugaya always finds time for his Squad members. Or tries to, time permitting. Toshiro glanced the room for a new opponent, an opponent whose skill is unknown to him. Several able shinigami attended in the dojo, standing against the wall as they watched the captain teach. A few were not even from Squad 10, just wanting to spar with a captain. They were welcomed all the same to this place of learning.
Toshiro’s attention fell to a man with a dragon tattoo and red accented hair. He seemed to stand out, however Toshiro could not place why. “How about you?” Toshiro held a wooden katana for him to take by the hilt. “Don’t think I’ve sparred with you yet."
Shun had joined today's class at the dojo at the whim of his squad mates who heard that the Captain would be in today to be teaching the squad and others who wanted to join. Shun himself never met the captain yet, as far as he knew he recruited through some seated officers that had an open spot at the time. Out of curiosity he joined them, he at least wanted to know who he was working for. He heard many rumors about the Captain. Things like the Captain being strict and that very mean. He was the youngest Captain of the Gotei 13, and he had a pretty powerful Zankpakutou as well.
Shun however also heard other....more conflicting rumors. Mostly being that the Captain is adorable, he was like a small child and it would be the cutest thing when he would throw tantrums. This was another reason why Shun needed to see the Captain, he wanted to know what was fact and what was fiction, he just wanted to quell this suddenly curiosity he had although he wouldn't admit that aloud to his fellow squad mates.
Upon arriving at the Dojo the dark haired Shinigami noticed there was already a spar in the works. A young white haired boy was facing off against one of the unseated shinigami. The guy looked pretty rigid and stiff, he couldn't hold up his blade to the other, who was masterfully glide circles around this guy if he wanted. The shinigami attempted to block as the white haired swordsman slash left but despite their differences in height, the other was able to take him and knock the sword from his hand. Everyone around the room looked amazed, Shun wouldn't blame them either. It was excellent swordsmanship, precise and unrelenting. The other shinigami looked a little embarrassed as he should be.
The young man went on about how he had told the other plenty of times about his form and how he needed to let up. If this was a real fight this Shinigami would have been dead, Shun as well as everyone else knew that. That's why practices like this were constantly held. Shinigami needed to be as prepared as possible. And while they always can't be prepared they have to be read to think quickly on their feet while their opponent hurls who knows what at them.
The Shinigami that brought Shun here quietly pointed the to the White haired boy and called him Captain. So, this was Captain Hitsugaya? Admittedly he hoped that the other rumors were true and the he wasn't so....small. He was the youngest Captain but Shun did not expect him to be this young. He was already at a Captain's level and still had lots of potential to get stronger. Shun felt a little intimidated but he was also impressed.
It appeared as if the Captain looked around for another sparring partner he glanced around the room for a moment until his eyes fell upon Shun. He held out the wooden sword for him to grab by the hilt. Shun's comrades were practically shoving for him to grab the sword. He looked back at them and a glared at them before grabbing the sword and going to the center of the dojo.
"Alright, I accept."
He then took position holding the wooden sword with both hands as they teach you in kendo at the Academy. Of course, Shun was careful he knew that kendo was the base class they taught swordsmanship but the other half was experience. And over time the swordsman would develop his own style. He noticed the Captain had his own style as well. Shun didn't have much experience other then the few missions he got here and there. Then there was his first experience with a hollow. He was pretty confident that he might last longer then the other guy. But he wasn't arrogant, he respected the other before him. Bowing before the other before they began.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Captain."
Shun then took the base position, holding the sword and sliding forward as he normally did while taking an attack position. He debated about letting the Captain hit him to get a measure of his power or just to go on the attack. personally it would be wiser to wait and see, but at the same time attacking him head on would show initiative. Although he wasn't trying to get one over the young Captain, he really wanted to show the other that he was a capable Shinigami and not a waste of space here.

Toshiro measured his opponent of wooden weapon clad. He looked able, and his reiatsu did no favours concealing his strength thought the true nature of this strength was still a missing piece to Toshiro. His reiatsu was adequately powerful, seemed to be sitting at an average level for shinigami. Even still he might have some skill up his sleeve, unknown and great. Or Toshiro might be about to embarrass him in front of the other squad members. Not like they had room to tease, he'd served about half of them already. Others did not even wish to try it, out of fear of the captain's deliverance or damage to dignity. Toshiro lead the dance here, simply watching served little purpose for learning. A lost waste of time for them, perhaps. Captains are masters of their craft of killing, learning from one is a great opportunity. Especially if they impressed him. Toshiro wondered if his new opponent would. He recognized the man from around the barracks, he was in Squad 10. Toshiro had not talked to him, maybe passed him by a few times. A name did not come to mind.
He would test his stances first. Beginners always overlooked the stances. Your body and simply the way you move is a key element of swordplay. Stance must naturally lead into the attack for truly powerful attacks like Toshiro's previous opponent learned. Masters over the centuries have invented precise stances, ones that can be emulated and studied. Toshiro learned many over the years, often finding little use for the exactly specified methods in combat. His opponent assumed a kendo stance, a basic one no doubt drawn from his academy education. His form was solid and his reiatsu sharp. Toshiro wondered how he handled a real sword.
"Good to meet you. Glad to see so many here to sharpen their skills. We'll start of easy."
Toshiro is a small target, smaller still when standing side face. He lifted off his right foot into a wide swipe aimed Shun's right arm. The captain's previous opponent experienced a similar attack. If Shun stepped into a block, it would be a fairly simple attack to block. A test of abilities, nothing much more. How his opponent reacted would decide how he would respond, and how he would teach. The ultimate goal is practice, honing one's skill to razor sharpness. Sometimes the simple methods made for good practice. Toshiro wouldn't admit to enjoying showing off his skills, of course that would be immature.
So it seemed the Captain would take the first turn in this spar, this first move paralleled the one that Shun had seen the Captain use on the previous fighter. This was likely to test his stance and get a feel for his swordsmanship. It was a fairly basic attack and would not require much to block, as Shun demonstrated he quickly took a blocking stance. Shun took a step back, turning the wooden sword slightly and held the sword in a way that crossed Toshiro's, he had to admit that the Captain was pretty strong from what he could sense. And even if he was letting up on the first attack he could still feel his strength somewhat. For Shun to do decently he had to keep in mind Toshiro's speed and height, he was smaller and definitely faster. Once could probably lose him easily trying to keep focus, not to mention being used to opponents around your height or larger accuracy was desperately needed in a battle with someone of the Captain's height.
Shun decided to now go for an attack while he caught the Captain with this block. Their sword were pushing against one another which gave Shun and idea, the dark haired Shinigami quickly side stepped while dropping his blade to go under the Captain's. Next he turn the sword so the that the wooden blade part was facing the captain, lowering himself Shun then swung the blade in an upward sweeping motion to get the Captain's side as he attempted with him. A blow for a blow for a lack of better words.
