She felt its presence sharply. It was a hollow, of not unconsiderable strength. Gwen had been jogging across the sand, solidifying reiatsu beneath her to skim lightly, just above the dunes, not particularly caring for what beasts could find her this way. Like all spiritually aware beings, once the ability to step had been gained it was simple to extrapolate that same technique of solidifying reiryoku beneath one's feet for the purposes off "flying" as it were, as opposed to having to trudge through the sands.
Of course that lead to the interesting challenge of focusing one's own reiatsu for practical purposes while simultaneously being constantly vigilant in case there was something strong enough to need disposal. She was not stupid; simply indifferent. Regardless, as soon as the fact that it was following her indicated to her that it was after blood, she stopped in her tracks, and sent out a wave of reiatsu; intending to subdue and scare, her spiritual pressure increasing as her intent to kill was made apparent.
This, however, was interpreted as a challenge, as her new monstrous friend sped towards her. She gripped the hilt of her tanto- pulling it from its sheath at her side. She wielded it in standard grip, finding reverse-grip wielding to be completely impractical and waited, still applying her spiritual pressure, for the hollow to crest the rise from behind which it was coming.

But it never did. Instead, her eyes went wide, as there was a bright red flash, and a cero pelted her way. It was too fast for her to avoid it, and it hit her dead on, launching her backwards through the sand. Only her hierro managed to save her from being completely shattered by the blast, but it still felt like being hit by a train. She rolled to her feet from her position in the sand and spat, disgusted in the sand next to her. She was pissed now. She used her sonido to close the distance and saw the monstrosity she now intended to destroy in the most painful way possible.
It was half a story tall, and looked brutish and troll-like. It had spindly limbs but large appendages, and a body with spikes that protruded. A multitude of eyes looked vacantly out in every direction from its bulbous head and when she arrived, it screeched indecently. Gwen was not particularly squeamish but she could certainly appreciate a follow for its grotesqueness, and she almost admired this one for how gruesome and fearful it was. She let out a vicious snarl in response, flying into the offensive.

She swiped at it, nearly going off-balance in the process, and it simply blocked her with a large clawed hand. It went to slash her with the other but she held her sword up defensively. It was not strong enough, however, and so the claws were able to reach around it, slashing at her. She gasped in pain, before renewing her wild assault.
Her blows lacked focus, the edge of her zanpakuto dulled by a lack of skill, and she succumbed to a punch from the hollow. It let out a disgusting slurping noise from its oddly-shaped head, before descending upon her. She let out several bala swiftly into several of its eyes, gaining the opportunity to leap back to her feet. She changed the grip on her sword to give her greater leverage, and flicked her wrist as she struck, attacking with the angled part at the end of her extended knife. Her blows were aggressive, short and sharp, like the stings of an insect. Chunks of finger-meat plopped to the desert floor and the hollow howled in renewed pain.
It staggered backwards and punched her with its remaining good hand. It was a strong blow and she felt that it had put a significant amount of reiryoku behind it. She bounced backwards, tunnelled into the sand by the sheer force. As she dug herself out steadily, she felt it charging another cero.

"Ohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuckohfuck." she thought, barely having the time to gather the reiryoku to launch her own in response. It wasn't good enough, however. The overwhelming advantage of timing and vantage meant that her cero kept her alive, but could not prevent the enormous explosion which created a large crater in the sands around her.
When the dust settled, she stood in the pit, nearly doubled over, panting. She was concussed and bleeding from scratched caused by high velocity sand streams having grazed her. She held it together pretty well. She'd been battered and bruised but by some miracle of form and function, her body had managed to stay fairly intact. This was thanks to her ever increasing ability to take a hit. She focused her reiatsu upon the sand beneath her to stop it collapsing into the forest of the menos far below.
The hollow snarled and lumbered down into the pit, and Gwen responded by launching bala after bala at it, in series of hundreds and hundreds, pelting its body over and over. It scarcely slowed down as Gwen continued her relentless barrage, tiring out but determined to continue. This seemed to be no normal hollow. It was weaker than her, as she expected but was it somehow a vasto lorde? No! Vasto lorde had human forms...

Eventually, it reached the point where it had slowed down, unable to continue under the intense rain of concentrated reiatsu Gwen was pelting it with. At this point, the utilised her shunpo, and appeared standing upon its head, before, with a menacing grin, plunging her sword straight into one of its eyes. It howled with pain but Gwen was able to hold on and systematically stab it in each one of its eyes. It clawed at her but she ignored the pain, until it was totally blinded.
"Goodbye." she told it coldly, before charging a cero with her non-sword hand. She launched it straight through the hollow's body, completely disintegrating its internal organs and the husked remains of its body scattered to dust, as Gwen managed to focus her reiatsu to stop herself from falling to the desert floor.
She looked around at the destruction that had been caused, and ruled that it would not take long for the wind to return this part of the desert to its natural state, before continuing delicately on her way, ready to look for somewhere to rest up and heal. That had been surprisingly tough and showed her one thing at least- she still had a long way to go.

Gwen stirred. She was asleep in a cubbyhole, a place she had made for herself where she would be safe from assault. Her dreams were troubled- she was recalling an event that happened long ago, where she had met possibly the strangest inhabitant of Hueco Mundo she had ever encountered. It hadn't been an unpleasant encounter and yet... She broke out in a cold sweat, shuddering in her sleep.
A click and clatter of stone. Gwen threaded mostly silently through the palace, attempting to avoid penetrating the blanket of quiet. She was not a poetic person, and did not wish to be- no singing of the past, and the lore of this place, seemingly frozen in time eternally. The old powers had left this place- and the old powers that came after them. Was the throne of Las Nochas occupied? She guessed probably not. A sinking, obtrusive sea of old memories and conflicts. If power left traces, the walls of this place would emanate thick reiatsu. If hate and triumph and glory stained the ground upon which they were earned, the ground of Las Nochas would be multihued and seizure inducing.

She stumbled downwards and inwards, broken pieces of sky about her ankles, the moon beaming down through holes in the dome. She penetrated further and further into the palace, feeling absolutely nothing about her once home. The palace was returning to dust; as it should, she felt. Such an unnatural creation was unwelcome in Hueco Mundo. Yet... she could feel some presence here. Yet another who would try and rebuild this place? It was still battle scarred as ever though.
She descended into the darkness, wordlessly scanning with her eyes and reiatsu. For the latter it wasn't too hard to miss. This bloke certainly seemed strange, all suited up. He turned to look at her. She stared at him hard. He was stronger than her she could tell. She stepped forward into the inky blackness with him. The nice thing about arrancar was that they could not eat others to gain power, and seldom had the desire to indiscriminately kill one another now that all forms of hierarchy were gone.
"You're in Las Nochas." she said, pointing out the obvious. There was deeper meaning behind her words however. She didn't speak often and it took someone insightful to pick out what she was trying to communicate.

His reiatsu washed over her, almost in waves. Gwen's stare remained collected and sullen as ever. She had no intention to fight, exerting her reiatsu only in such a way as to not be overwhelmed by this arrancar. She was oblivious to his internal monologuing, him giving absolutely no signs away that she had had any effect on him whatsoever. Nature dictated that in her current position... She would surely die if she confronted him in a violent manner. Instead she allowed herself some curiosity, and stood, studying him curiously.
She froze, however, when he started to approach. Shell-breathing, she held herself back, every inch of her screaming at her to lash out. This was quite terrifying- what did it want with her? It still had not spoken. His hand stopped just short, and she resisted the desire to attempt to rip it off. Goosebumps ran up her arms against an icy chill down her spine, and she leaned ever so slightly away from the hand reaching out for her. She blinked once, noticing her eyeballs had begun to go dry. She suddenly became very aware of her hollow-hole, which was located in the centre of her stomach.
"Do you have a name?" she asked it, responding to its cocked head with her own. "My name is Gwen." she said, hopefully answering the reverse of her own question would prompt it to say something- which would be something she could work from. She was happy to sit here for a while though; it was something to engage her otherwise bored mind, and she had the patience of a thousand suns.

Gwen slid into wakefulness. It was not a sudden start, or a shock but it was still distressing. She clung to the memories that eluded her in a fog now but the face of the person she had met and the details of his life escaped her. Her spine was damp and her body was covered in goosebumps. She stirred slightly before flicking her eyes open and waiting stock still. Was there someone, something there? Was she about to get eaten? Even as an arrancar, these were questions she asked herself sometimes. It paid well to be cautious. Part of her felt like a brush with a hollow meant something. She internalized the thought but in the background she could almost anticipate an epiphany brewing. She put that aside.
She rose and removed the sand that had gotten everywhere with a burst of reiatsu. Today would be training- after yesterday's ordeal, it wasn't a good idea to continue as she was and she needed to improve herself yet further. She drew her rather short zanpakuto and placed a single finger upon it, saying "Pulular." She released, fire escaping from her, wings fluttering from her back, her usual clothing exchanging for the strange carapiece'd leotard she wore during her release, her modesty protected by an almost feathery ruff of fur.
Post by GWEN OLIVAREZ on Feb 22, 2016 11:16:09 GMT
Beads of sweat rolled down Gwen's exposed torso, droplets not caught by her ruff simply sliding between her bosoms. She'd been training hard, improving the power granted to her by her resurrection, on her own in the vast sands of Hueco Mundo. There was no other hollow or arrancar around for miles- the perfect venue for her to hone her strength. She was improving the strength of her abilities...
Firstly was one of her favourites- Uno Tras Otro. She went through manouvre after manouvre, honing her mixed martial arts fighting skills- every blow that she made was six times as strong or weak as the last. She would deliver a flurry of kicks, followed by a series of complicated punches and chops as well as open-palm strikes. She allowed the natural energy of her release to drive more and more reiryoku into her strikes, and she recognised that much like a flame, she too oscillated in power, bright burns followed by dim flickers. Such was the nature of her power and by relaxing and allowing more of that power to flow into herself, it amplified. Her strong punches and kicks were even stronger, while the weaker ones were much weaker. Such was Gwen's nature; and she was nothing if not approving of natural order.

She figured that she might as well practice her release while learning some martial arts techniques- She had seen several in various human mixed martial arts self-teaching books. It would be easy enough to apply reiryoku to them to acquire their spiritual equivalents, and thus Gwen was determined to do so. She flew over to a copse of dead trees and decided to practice upon them as there were rather a few. Firstly, she would attempt to pull off Ikkotsu. This was simple enough, and simply involved focusing and tensing a single arm, before delivering a powerful thrust to the chest of the opponent.
Gwen did this, and punched the tree. Her Hierro saved her from any real damage. She took a deep breath, tensed her arm, and struck the tree once more, and several chips of wood fractured off of it. She nodded, triumphantly before chanelling reiryoku into her arm- should this work, the tree would be crushed, flying to 100m away... She struck with her tensed arm, and the tree swayed and shook- she could hear it creaking, though there was nothing more. She sighed, and re-attempted it, punching the tree with a reiryoku-fuelled hand and this time it crumpled before her might. However it failed to launch itself away, which was what she was expecting.
Post by GWEN OLIVAREZ on Feb 22, 2016 11:17:04 GMT
Determined, Gwen decided to focus on the direction of energy flow in relation to the tension of her arm. When she was ready, she drew her arm back before delivering a punch to a nearby tree, and watched as it flew in a wave of sand to be far away, completely crumpled and dead. She smiled to herself- that was a success!
She moved on now- onwards and upwards. Any advanced practitioner of mixed martial arts would be able to develop the Ikkotsu into the Soukotsu, was what the manual said, and indeed it did seem to be pretty similar. Gwen was fairly confident that she knew where crotch and torso height were, and so as she moved onto her next cold dead victim, she tried it out; the first set of punches she delivered were completely off mark, perhaps a little too far apart, unless her opponent was a giant. She tried again, aiming roughly for spots 75cm apart. She had more success the second time, and by the third time, her aim was perfect. She channeled reiryoku into her arms and lashed out, however the added energy was difficult to control, and it warped around her target and shot off into the sand, making an enormous crater a little distance away.

She sighed, and attempted once more, getting the energy right before aiming for the tree. She hit this time, however her energy was mis-focused. She was proficient at hand-to-hand combat but such a complicated manouvre was tricky. She landed the hit but this tree too, like the last one she hit with Ikkotsu was de-rooted and flung across the desert. Woops. She stopped to take a breather for a moment, her wings fluttering softly in the cool night, before starting up again. She channeled energy into her arms, utilising the same focus on tensing them. She made sure it was just right, holding the energy before lashing out, her two fists both pumelling the tree with a single strike and it crumpled, being crushed beneath her force. That time hurt, though- she wasn't used to the raw energy flowing through her.
She shook her hands, and shook her head, before going to attempt it again, this time improving the speed of execution. She took a breath, channeled her reiryoku and delivered the accurate and swift blow to the next tree. This time it crumpled, and Gwen's fists were spared from any more unnecessary pain. She smiled, executing the technique once more for good measure. It looked like she had it down!

She figured it was time to take a break from the tough stuff and do something a little easier. She had read in her MMA guide book that she'd pinched from a shop that there were in fact several schools of martial arts. It had gone on to list several but one which truly attracted her had been T'ai Chi. The idea of balance had struck a chord within her, and she had decided to learn the Minor Yang technique for quickly striking enemies. She recognised the irony in learning such a technique, as many would consider her "evil". She considered that perhaps it would be balanced to learn such a technique.
Gwen focused on herself, and considered her own actions. Something good born of evil? What even were good and evil. Probably relative to the subjective experiences of others- not that Gwen really consciously ever considered others as having subjective experience. Still she supposed that something dark could have good consequences. People getting in her way or annoying her gave her a great excuse to grind them to dust, such a thing was an excellent example...
She concentrated on that, realizing that she would probably need an instructor in order to become proficient but she let, for now, herself feel the flow of energy going through her. The combined this energy with reiatsu in her right hand, and watched it glow slightly. She delivered a fierce open palm blow, but the sudden increase in speed threw her off, and she nearly fell over. How graceful! Balance; balance was key. She focused again, positive effects, despite all negativity, and she found that she was successful- the energy returned. She made sure to breathe deeply as she struck and her hand moved at incredible speed. She rolled into the invisible attack, before striking again- with the same right hand. She'd got it!

Gwen next wanted to learn a technique that she had seen other arrancar perform- Ensombreza huelga. The principal seemed quite simple but she knew it would be much harder. Unlike the hand to hand techniques she had been learning, this involved gathering reiatsu with the intent of paralysis- as opposed to reiryoku to enhance her physical blow. The concentration would be on the gathering of the reiatsu about her right arm.
She pulled the reiatsu together, roughly the same amount as in a cero, however, as soon as she stopped, it simply dissipated. She tried again, pulling the reiatsu into a shadowy cloak around her arm, but it simply escaped as soon as she stopped bringing it together. She pondered for a moment- she needed to get it to be at least meta stable. She realized that if she gathered it together as a solid surface coating her arm, it would have surface tension. She did this, exerting her reiatsu upon her own arm, making it a solid block such that when she concetrated on maintaining it as opposed to gathering it, it stuck.
From here, she merely struck out at the tree... But she could tell it hadn't worked- the reiatsu simply shattered off of her arm. Not good. She realized that she had made her technique brittle- it would involve successfully having the technique flow into the place she struck for it to be effective. She gathered her reiatsu, making sure that it was bound to her arm and then struck at the tree, forcing her reiatsu into its body, and she watched as it cracked open.
Post by GWEN OLIVAREZ on Feb 22, 2016 11:20:00 GMT
It had taken her a little while to do it that time, but certainly, it was a success. In combat she would not have the luxury of time, and so she repeated the technique, gathering the reiatsu at very fast speed, and slamming it into the tree. The tree completely snapped in half- her attack had coincided with a strong punch from her release ability. Yep, that settled that.
She could feel a little strain from using her resurrection for so long without a break. It was possible to overcome this however, she knew it. She beat her wings rapidly, and flew up into the air, the hum of her flight surrounding her. Training in this way was much like holding a glass of water at arm's length. To hold a glass of water at arm's length for mere seconds is something even a child can do; for minutes it requires more focus. To hold a glass of water over the course of an hour, and one would begin to feel seriously drained but to hold a glass of water at arm's length for an entire day... It would be very difficult, to say the least. Gwen was capable of maintaining her release for a good while... Maybe an hour or two, tops. However, to earn full completeness of the form- it would require something all the more drastic.
Post by GWEN OLIVAREZ on Feb 22, 2016 11:20:49 GMT
And so she hovered, wings beating to add to the challenge. Soon enough, she would find herself faltering, but she would stay afloat no matter what. To count time in Hueco Mundo was difficult to say the least, however it was possible. Measuring the relative heights of the sand dunes was a method that she found worked. Minutes passed. The strain on her wings was noticeable now. She didn't move, except for the steady beating of her wings. A further hour went by. By now, sweat was forming in beads upon her body, and judderingly slid down, before forming tiny dark circles on the ground below. Her head was beginning to feel a little fuzzy and her wings ached. Now... Now the real challenge began.
She reached hour two, and was drenched, her ruff clung to her, outlining her hollow hole. She kept up the steady beating of her wings, though her body was hurting from the strain of maintaining her release. Upon reaching hour four, she had sagged in the air slightly, rivers of sweat pouring from her body and her skin was burning due to the heat of her own reiatsu. She couldn't think properly- she had no focus.
Post by GWEN OLIVAREZ on Feb 22, 2016 11:22:31 GMT
Were she to be interrupted by some random adjuchas class hollow, she might even get eaten. She kept beating her wings, and squeezed all her reiryoku into maintaining her release.
Hour eight. Gwen was barely able to keep off the floor. She was a mere centimeters away; her mind was complete mush. Her reiryoku was just about done. One wing had slowed down, and she had to occasionally exert extra energy to keep herself centimetres above the desert floor. Burns marked her skin all over, as her own fiery reiatsu had started to damage her. She gasped as the last of her reiryoku effectively ran dry, before dropping to the ground, and lying there, her face in the sand, her body having finally given up and reverted to its normal form. She was proud of herself though- she could do this.
She could feel her wings retracting, her ruff turning back to smooth, sweat-drenched chest, her zanpakuto re-forming as her powers once more became re-sealed within it. She cast her mind back to the beginning of the day which seemed like aeons ago, and realized that she still knew nothing about the man in her memory... But it didn't matter to her any more.
