KUCHIKI BYAKUYA . Sixth division TAICHOU . HEAD OF THE NOBLE KUCHIKI CLAN YOU THINK YOURSELF MY EQUAL WHEN IN TRUTH YOU AREN'T EVEN CLOSE TO MY LEVEL [keepkeep]
Byakuya grabbed the stack of papers and gently tapped them against the desk as he pushed them in together, neatly stacking them to the side as he sat at his desk. It was about mid-day, the sun was out and shining brightly. He sent out a Hell Butterfly that morning to seek out one Mejiro Kaori, his Substitute Shinigami Representative. He wanted to meet with her, find out who she was and what she was about. He also had to make sure to inform her of her duties as a Substitute Shinigami and specifically what he personally expected of her, since she was apart of his squad he would hold her to the same standards as he held everyone else.
As he waited for her to arrive he continued filing and filling out his paperwork, transfer requests and requests for leaves by numerous different squad members. He had Kaori's file and everything about her sitting next to him on his desk, ready for when she finally got here so he could review it with her and ensure that everything inside of it was accurate. His office as per usual was kept organized with nothing that wasn't needed sitting out, and only what he was going to need or was currently using being out on his desk.
So I will take this burden on and become the holy one
A few months had passed since Kaori had successfully completed the transition process to become a Substitute Shinigami under the Crisis Core, and started her training. She'd trained with many of the sixth division members, first starting with the lower seats, and working her way up as both her power and understanding grew of this world. In that time, she'd heard many stories about the captain she served under, but though she'd spotted him a few times in passing during her training sessions, not once had the two exchanged many words. Many of her division members (funny how she was already thinking herself a part of the division) had told her stories of the captain, tried to explain his demeanor to him. Kaori had listened, and she kept the words in mind, but the girl wasn't the type to form solid opinions of someone solely based on the words of another.
She'd sent a letter to the captain after she felt her potential of a Shinigami had increased exponentially since she'd started the process. And finally, a hell butterfly arrived, informing her the captain wanted to speak with her. She'd been in the human world when word finally arrived, she asked Jumala if he would be willing to finish the rest of her patrol for her.
Now Kaori found herself standing outside the Rokubantai's barracks, staring at the door. It was rare for her to feel apprehension, but at that moment, it was the only word that could describe the feeling in her stomach. She wasn't nervous, not exactly; but she also wasn't completely at ease either. If her late father could see her, he'd likely be disappointed: Kaori and her two brothers had been raised not to show your emotions to another, it gave far too much away about yourself. Closing her eyes and taking a breath to center herself, Kaori raised her hand and knocked. "It's Mejiro Kaori, Kuchiki-taichou, I've received your summons."

Byakuya looked up from his desk, hearing the knock first and then the words. "Enter" He said, setting aside the paperwork he was currently working on back to the top of the pile. He reached over to grab her folder and set it in front of him, sliding it opened as the girl undoubtedly entered. He gave her a once over gauging how she dressed and carried herself, having at least some satisfactory in how she did so. If she truly wished to impress him, she'd have to prove to him she was worthy of such a thing. "So you are my Substitute Representative from the World of the Living. It's nice to meet you." He said, motioning for her to take a seat in front of himself.
Once she was seated he'd begin looking down at the now open folder in front of him, thumbing through just a few bits of the paperwork before pulling out three specifically. The first was her picture, the second was the reports of her Zanpakuto, and the third was of the personality test that was done. "Mejiro Kaori, From all reports of you and your Zanpakuto, I cannot help but wonder why you were assigned to my division." He said, now thumbing through several other pictures all of which were of her various Shikai abilities on display "Of everything I have, it all points that you would be better suited in Hitsugaya Taicho's division. Why, may I ask, have you been assigned to me?" As he passed each picture he slowly pulled them out and placed them down in front of her, if not for his seemingly neutral tone it might seem like he was interrogating her though in truth he was merely wondering if she had requested it herself.
So I will take this burden on and become the holy one
"Enter"
At the command, Kaori slid the door open, approaching the desk and waiting for a command. He was studying her, she could tell, trying to discern what kind of division member she would be from her demeanor. At least this was familiar territory for the female, having been a part of these political games since before she could talk. Normally she would be studying the other as he studied her, but something told her that wouldn't be proper behavior at that moment, not with his higher standing than her own. Instead, she kept her gaze averted, downcast slightly. She waited, hands clasped lightly behind her back as she stood straight. The captain spoke, and Kaori assumed he was finished with his initial appraisal; at his indication, she slipped gracefully into the seat provided.
He was flipping through papers, though barely reading through them; likely Byakuya had already familiarized himself with the contents contained on each page. Studious then. Kaori got barely a glance at the documents lying out between them, but she needed little else to recognize her Shikai, and the techniques it could perform. There was a picture of Touu, the female sending the fifteen icicles hurling towards a training dummy, and another one of Tsurara, the giant pillar of ice in the process of collapsing. "Forgive me if I've been misinformed, but I was under the impression a Shinigami's division wasn't based solely on its Zanpakutou." The female was well aware that wasn't how it worked; she knew that the Shinigami were allowed to choose which division to join, and the only time specific divisions were assigned to them was if they were being promoted to an available officer position. "I've not met Hitsugaya-taichou, and I do not make it a habit of forming opinions on a person based on the words of another, so I know little of the Juubantai Taichou, other than his Zanpakutou is an ice type, similar to my own." Why was she assigned to his specific division? Honestly the specific reasoning was not something Kaori was familiar with. "When we awoke from Stasis, we were put through several battle simulations, and based on the results, given a new number, our new division number. I do not know of the others, but I wasn't told specifically why I was assigned to the sixth, and I didn't ask. Therefore, any answer I can give is only conjecture." The female didn't expand further, waiting instead to see if the male wanted her to continue with her assumptions.

KUCHIKI BYAKUYA . Sixth division TAICHOU . HEAD OF THE NOBLE KUCHIKI CLAN YOU THINK YOURSELF MY EQUAL WHEN IN TRUTH YOU AREN'T EVEN CLOSE TO MY LEVEL [keepkeep]
"I see..."
Those were the only words Byakuya gave Kaori as he slowly stood, turning towards the window behind his desk he moved to stand in front of it for a few moments in silence before speaking up. "The Gotei was established over a thousand years ago, more specifically the Shin'ō Academy was built. It was made by the current Sotaicho, Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto. He is the oldest and strongest Shinigami currently living, All Shinigami must go through this Academy in order to become Fully-Fledged Shinigami. It is here that we learn who they are and what division they should be assigned too, we base this off of a number of things including but not limited too their Zanpakuto, Personality, and overall fighting style. Each Division in itself brings a different skill set to the Gotei." Byakuya paused as he turned back to Kaori and moved back over to the desk, grasping another picture though... It was not of her or her Zanpakuto. "What I also find curious is that this boy was assigned to Sui-Feng Taicho, he shows everything I would look for though... He seems to have a bit of a brashness to him. Though his Zanpakuto seems to be able to help him in the art of stealth as well." As he spoke he dropped the picture overtop of the pile she'd already been accumulating, the picture itself was of someone she would definitely recognize. "Heikka Jumala, born in Cairo, Egypt. You were raised into politics, raised from birth whereas he was raised in a far less privileged life. Through my research I've found a distinct kinship between you two not unlike the kind most Shinigami form with their fellow squad mates."
His words might not have made much sense in truth to Kaori, it wouldn't surprise him if he'd lost her "I understand why you were placed in my division, your particular background is well suited for what is expected of you. I will first start off now by telling you of who I am, and that might help you better understand yourself. I am Kuchiki Byakuya, Rokubantai Taicho and Head of the Kuchiki House, one of the 4 Greater Noble Houses. As such, I am expected to uphold the law and order of Soul Society and I expect the exact same of everyone in my Squad. While my Squad has no specific duties, we are the Model Division that sets the standards for all other Shinigami. You are a Shinigami now, As such you're expected to uphold only the highest standard in everything you do, Mejiro Kaori, I ask you this question only once. Will you sacrifice everything for the sake of the Rokubantai, will you devote yourself to your practice and do your very best to uphold the law?" His tone was still neutral despite the serious nature of the question, though it was obvious what he expected of her. Byakuya wished to evaluate how she responded to such a requirement, if she was to be apart of her Division... She would have to be prepared to do everything she had to in order to uphold the same standards that everyone else in this division was held too... Including himself. There was nobody in this division that was more important than the next, one may hold a higher rank but in truth that only meant they held more responsibilities. That wasn't to say, however, that the lowest seat didn't have any as everyone had their own responsibilities that they must maintain. If this human was too be the representative for his division, then she would have to be ready from the start and with little reason to be willing to be held to the same standards as everyone else.
So I will take this burden on and become the holy one
The explanation Byakuya gave didn't seem to give her any new information about this other world she was now a part of. Still though she listened: there was always the chance the captain would reveal something she hadn't already learned, or even that Kaori had forgotten or misunderstood something when she'd first learned about the Soul Society and what it entailed to be a Shinigami. Though when he finished the explanation, there wasn't really anything she didn't already know. The captain moved back to the desk and dropped another file on top of the ones already there. Kaori's eyes widened momentarily, before she schooled her features back into a careful mask of neutrality.
Brash was certainly one way to describe the boy, that was for sure. Kaori hadn't forgotten his claim to one day kill a Vasto Lorde, and rid all the realms of Hollows. It was a foolish mission, but one Jumala had set his mind on. "Did you want me to form a camaraderie among the rest of the division like the one I share with Heikka-san, Taichou?" She wasn't sure if she was just trying to read too much into his words, or if there was a different meaning he was trying to express than the one she'd come to.
The responses she could have given to the final placement in the sixth division may have only been conjecture, but Kaori was fairly certain her own deductions had been correct. Or, at the very least, on the right track. The raven haired Shinigami started on the explanation, and as he spoke, Kaori realized her conjecture was nearly spot on. She wasn't familiar how the noble clans worked, only that they had great influence, and many of the officers in the Soul Society were affiliated with one noble family or another. It made sense that with the captain being the head of one of the Great Noble families that the division was considered to be a model division, and now that she was a part of that division, the female held no illusion that she wouldn't be beholden to the very same standards as the rest of the division simply because she was human; Byakuya stated as much. "Am I correct to assume I'm also expected to be the model Crisis Core member and human as well?" Regardless of the answer, her reply to his question wouldn't change. "Hai, Taichou. I promise to uphold the law to the best of my ability, and devote my life to my duties." It may have been strange how quickly she was willing to accept the terms he laid out, readily willing to sacrifice her very life for a world she wasn't wholly apart of. But growing up a Mejiro meant she was burdened with many responsibilities since a very tender age; to her, it was just another concept of her life.

"Yes" Byakuya said to her question of if he wished for her to form the same camaraderie with the Division like she had with Jumala, as he continued she was a good listener... A trait that would be very useful for her right now. "As for the Crisis Core, yes. You are the Representative of the Rokubantai now, Whilst your Duties as a Crisis Core member might be important, just as important are your duties to the Rokubantai." As she said that she was willing to do whatever was needed, Byakuya gave her a slight nod. "I will assume Kurotsuchi Taicho has informed you of the duties that Crisis Core members have, and I will also assume that even if he has not you're intelligent enough to figure it out based solely off the name. I first want you to meet someone, He is the sole reason you even sit before me currently. His name is Kurosaki Ichigo, He was first given Shinigami powers by my Sister, Rukia, and that is something that is a grevious crime against Soul Society. And though she was sentenced to death, He changed the course of history by his sheer will power alone. It is because of him that Rukia still yet lives, and the reason my views of our laws have changed. Even our Sotaichou admits that they aren't perfect, but that does not mean they changed. I wish for you to go to Karakura Town and meet him, learn all that you can from him Mejiro Kaori."
With that he began rifling just a bit through his desk before pulling out another picture, this time handing it to her rather than placing it in front of her. The picture was of an orange haired boy, who looked no older than maybe 17. "That is Kurosaki Ichigo. On the back is his address, Out of everyone I have met in my life he is the one of the only two that has ever beaten me in combat. You would be wise to learn from him, and more importantly... Understand what it truly takes to be worthy of having those powers of yours."
So I will take this burden on and become the holy one
Kaori nodded her head as Byakuya confirmed what she suspected. It meant more responsibilities, and between the three of them, the girl would certainly have little to no time to herself. It wasn't that surprising, nor was it that unsettling: she'd always been more at ease when she had something to do. But dividing her time between her duties to her division, the Crisis Core, and her family, Kaori knew she'd have to make sacrifices somewhere. Her family would get the short end of that stick, she was sure. But she'd been drifting away from them as she matured and grew more independent. "He has, Sir." In all honesty, Kaori was not very fond of the captain of the twelfth division. She was thankful of the abilities he'd granted all of them, but the way he treated them as test subjects, it made her feel on edge.
When the raven haired captain held out a file towards her, Kaori reached forward and grabbed the paper, looking at it. The female was a bit surprised to see it wasn't a piece of paper explaining anything on the Substitute, but rather a picture instead. It was an orange haired male, a teenager probably around her age, if not a year or two younger than herself. She wondered how much issue the male's hair caused him, being as bright as it was. She returned her attention to the captain, placing the picture on top of the pile of other papers she was accumulating. "Is there anything in particular you want me to learn from him, or is that up to my discretion?"

KUCHIKI BYAKUYA . Sixth division TAICHOU . HEAD OF THE NOBLE KUCHIKI CLAN YOU THINK YOURSELF MY EQUAL WHEN IN TRUTH YOU AREN'T EVEN CLOSE TO MY LEVEL [keepkeep]
Byakuya thought for a moment before shaking his head "No, I simply wish for you to meet him and learn from him. Inform him that I sent you, and that you're learning to become a Substitute Shinigami. Tell him that you have been instructed to learn from him and of the duties a Substitute Shinigami is expected to perform. Tell him that I ask this of him as a personal favor, if you're to be my Representative, I think it best you learn from the man who helped shape me into who I am today." In truth, if it hadn't been for Ichigo, Byakuya would be without a Sister currently. Rukia would've been executed and who knows where Soul Society would be right now, Ichigo had helped them against Aizen and in truth had been the only one who possessed the ability to defeat him as he was the only one who hadn't seen his Shikai. Just as well he was the one that helped them find and defeat Ginjo, and yet despite it all he hadn't ever changed from who he was from the very beginning.
"Though this should go without saying, I want you to pay close attention to Kurosaki Ichigo. It may seem like a minor thing and one might think they are when talking to him, but I mean it. If you truly wish to learn from him, you will ensure you're paying attention to what he says and how he acts... There is more to that boy than one might initially think."
So I will take this burden on and become the holy one
Kaori nodded as she listened to the raven haired male. It was obvious Byakuya respected the kid, and for someone as stoic as the captain to have respect in another like he did Kurosaki Ichigo, it must have spoken volumes about the teenager's character. She knew the stories, of how he helped the Seireitei defeat Aizen, and how during the incident with the Zanpakutou going rogue and attacking their former masters, and there was the incident with the Bounts who had rallied with Kariya to lay waste to the organization who had created and abandoned them. It seemed that whenever the Soul Society found themselves in some sort of situation, Kurosaki Ichigo was somewhere fighting alongside them.
It was because of the teenager that she and her twelve comrades even existed in the first place.
Because of that, in a way it could be said Kaori and the rest of the other twelve owed the male. Well, in her opinion, it was better to think that she owed Kurosaki more than she owed Kurotsuchi. In all honestly, the science captain creeped the female out. He treated the thirteen representatives like they were test subjects, and to him, he probably viewed them as such. If there was one thing Kaori was positive of, it was that she was glad she hadn't been assigned to Kurotsuchi's division. "I understand," the female started, "Is there anything else to discuss?" What went unsaid in her question was if she was free to leave, but it shouldn't have been difficult for the captain to pick up on the question that went unasked.

Byakuya thought for a few more moments when Kaori asked if there was anything else, He could go on for hours on the duties that Kaori was expected to perform and other such things but in truth he didn't wish to hold her for that long. On top of that he was sure that Kaori would learn this from Ichigo, So there was no reason to go over it now only to have her learn of it a second time. Turning back to Kaori Byakuya shook his head "I have nothing further for you at this time, Once you have finished what I have tasked you with return to me and I shall have more to teach you."
Do you really think he'll teach her? A voice in his head chimed, and Byakuya gave an internal nod as he responded "Of course he will, If he does it for no other reason he'll do it because I'm requesting he do it."
Byakuya moved forward, taking the papers and pictures and placing them back into the folder he pulled them from before placing it back in his desk. He then moved passed the desk and Kaori, opening the sliding door and waiting for Kaori to join him before he left the room and closed the door.
