Gaen was enjoying one of the infrequent times he was put on clinic shift, a job where you basically took care of whoever came stumbling in clutching something in pain. It was basically a really dialed down version of the emergency ward, helping out whatever stubbed toes, upset stomachs and runny noses came through. Most of his friends considered it pretty annoying work, basically putting bandages on people or telling them to take some asprin. Gaen found it very enjoyable though, a nice break from his usual job of stocking shelves in the surgical lab or writing reports. He actually got to sit down and help people, even if it was mostly just boo-boos.
What he was working on right this moment was a little more than a run of the mill whoopsie, it was a pretty long gash in a young woman’s arm. The young lady didn’t seem too upset about it, just patiently waiting while Gaen gave it a once over, see what the damage was. The dark haired girl had been pretty luck, the cut may have been long, but it was pretty clean and not too deep. A little further down and to the left and she would have been in the emergency room with a severed tendon or artery. She only really piped up to lament coming to the hospital (which was pretty common, Gaen didn’t take offence to it) and ask if he could fix it. The one armed medic gave a polite nod and a smile in confirmation that it was well within his ability. The cut wasn’t anything special, he could have her done and ready to go in a few minutes.
He focused his rietsu as he normally did, his hand lighting up green and his kido enveloping her wound. She jumped a little at the sudden feeling of her arm being stitched back together, which Gaen found a little funny, a soft chuckle escaping him. Even battle hardened soldiers can be surprised by the odd sensation of healing quickly.
She’s pretty hot. You should ask her out. Holla blurted, his avatar having no save for grace and Gaen blushed slightly as he tried to concentrate on his kido.
So, how’d this happen? He asked, trying to distract himself from his rambunctious avatar.
Small talk. Smooth. She teased, Gaen blushing again in response.
Haruka just watched on as her arm was being sealed back up and the gash knitting together, it fascinated her, healing Kidou to be précised, it was such a good thing to know sure there were warriors of Soul Society that had immense strength but where would they be without the medical experts here in the 4th Division. Perhaps she was fascinated also because she didn't know any healing Kidou herself, sure she had the basics down but she never excelled in the subject but this guy seemed to know his Kidou. She looked around the room trying to distract herself from the unusual feeling of her arm stitching up, she could never really remember what this division looked like, she had only been her once maybe twice in many years and both of those times were because she was here to see her injured comrades and that hadn't been a good day, being here it brought it all back. She snapped herself out of those thoughts and quick.
When she looked down she noticed her arm was as good as new ''Ah! you did it'' she said lightening her expression as she lifted her arm towards her as she observed it turning her hand over inspecting that there was no evidence like scaring to suggest she'd been sliced open. ''Good work'' she said looking to the guy. She wouldn't normally come her for something so trivial as a cut, but she had to admit to herself that it had been bleeding quite a bit and that she should get it looked at just in case. She reached into her Shinigami robes puling out a black glove as she heard the guy ask how she got the cut in first place. ''Uh...well'' she began as she slid the glove on her hand now matching the other hand as she flexed her fingers seeing that she had full working order still.
''I was training alone, in the forest so it was quiet, but some fool had to come and interfere, and provoked me into a fight'' she sighed, she should of fell for his torments. ''Don't know him or anything, in fact he might turn up here needing some medical attention himself'' Haruka's lip curling into a smirk. It was then that she took in the 4th Divisioner's appearance, she had never seen him before and she hadn't even realised he had healing her arm with only one hand due to him missing the other. ''Thanks'' she told him.
I think they accidentally deleted your opening post…
Gaen watched as the wound sealed itself up, something he had seen hundreds of times at this point. He remembered when he used to stress over every second of such a procedure, very delicately working to make sure there wasn’t any scars or blemishes. Now, he could basically do this with his eyes closed. When he was just about done he looked over to the young lady, who seemed to be intently watching as the wound closed up. It was actually pretty rare that anybody watched themselves get healed, though she seemed genuinely interested, which was even rarer, especially among the combat divisions. Some regarded healing magic as a sort of boring offshoot of the much more interesting fireballs and lightning other kido could produce. It was actually pretty refreshing. When he was finished, she sounded almost surprised at his success in closing the injury.
I get a lot of practice at this. He said with a little chuckle, moving over to the end of the bed she had been seated on to pick up her clip board. He filled out her paper work as she told him about her little tussle with some random ‘challenger’ who may or may not come dragging themselves through the hospital doors at some point. I’m not much one for sword fighting myself, I enjoy a good hand to hand spar every now in again though, less stabbing and slashing generally. He said as he put down the clipboard.
Anyway, if you think you’ve filled your quota for tooling up overconfident challengers, I suggest you head down to the cafeteria and get something to eat. You’ve probably lost a decent amount of blood, and while my kido will help, you should drink plenty of fluids, and eat something with high iron. Red meat, beans, stuff like that. Gaen said as he walked over to the door to the little clinic room, his medical bag over his shoulder. I can show you the way if you like, you were my last patient this shift and I could use some dinner myself. I hear the cooks made cheesecake today, and I’d like to get my hand on some of that before it’s gone. He said, figuring that she didn’t know the hospital too well and probably hasn’t enjoyed the fruits of the Fourth division cafeteria. Not to be immodest, but he was pretty sure that the hospital had the best food in the Seireitei.
Haruka rarely got a lot of injuries, she was usually fast enough to avoid any such wounds that she had incurred, but that was only usually when she was fully focused, and had the right mindset, this time though she had been tormented not to mention insulted and that really got to her, and had wavered her concentration and turning her usually calmer demure into rage and it hadn't served her well now had it seeing as she ended up here, but she'd had her eyes opened up to the talent that the 4th division had.
Her curiosity had been unexpected seeing as the guy had stated he had practice it so much it was merely nothing for him to perform any more. He'd fixed her up and made some notes as she observed her arm and thanked him. He did explain how he perfected hand to hand combat rather than sword fighting styles. Haruka's eyes lit up a little ''See i much prefer hand to hand also!'' she said with a small smile. ''I was raised with hand to hand combat as my go to fighting style...'' she said. Sure she had a Zanpakuto one that was not like a standard katana but two dagger like weapons but she only used them if she really needed to.
She let her expression drop a little as the suggestion was made for her to go eat something, yeah that was probably a good idea, she'd put off any meal since this morning and she'd need the energy back. He seemed to know exactly what he was talking about so Haruka nodded without hesitation. ''Yeah, you're right'' she began. She watched him as he grabbed a bag as if he was off out, and he explained he was heading to the cafeteria anyway and offered to show her where it was, oh yeah she had no idea where she was going in this place. ''Great!'' she said as she stood up ''That's nice of you umm...im sorry what is your name?'' she enquired realising she didn't know it. Now that he was mentioning food she suddenly had a craving for something sweet!
She seemed pretty excited about her hand to hand skills, making Gaen wonder if he should ask her to spar with him at some point. He very rarely had a chance to practice his martial skills, which didn't really worry him too much, but every now and again it was good to clear the cobwebs. There were very, very few people in the Fourth division that had any sort of hand to hand combat training or aptitude. The dojo that was supposed to be for hand to hand training was usually used for storing extra gurneys and beds most of the time for goodness sake.
I like her, she sounds fiesty! Holla blurted, making Gaen eternally grateful that her avatar had no real means of talking to actual people. Then again, if she had to actually live with the embarrassment of her own words, maybe she would filter what she said a little better. As it was, Gaen was just getting used to her outbursts, and ignoring the more crass of comments.
I wasn't raised on martial arts so far as I know, been a doctor for as long as I can remember. My family back in Rukongain sort of talked me into learning how to fight. We lived in a rough neighbourhood, so it made sense they wanted me to be able to defend myself. Gaen said, thinking back to his family, wondering how they were doing. It had been a few weeks since he had been out to see them, having just gained his shikai apparently came with a lot less free time it seems. One of my family members apparently came from Brazil, and he taught me Capoeria, which is basically Brazilian kickboxing. He explained, few people knowing what Capoeria was off the top of their heads. Do you have family here in Soul Society? He asked as he headed down the hall, leading the way to the cafeteria. He knew that there were people in Soul Society that were born here, and some who died in the mortal plane before getting adopted. She had mentioned growing up with martial arts, but she could have been one of the rare instances of a soul remembering their past life. It was about this time that she hit him with the realization that he hadn't actually introduced himself at all. Oh my word, I'm sorry. My name is Gaen, it's a pleasure to meet you Ms. Zuimi. He said, giving a quick bow as he spoke.
Haruka was proud to be a Hakuda user, it was most likely due to the fact it was what her mentor taught her. Her human life wasn't something she could remember but it was ironic how her human family members would beat her tirelessly and now that she was a shinigami it was completely flipped and she could defend herself entirely from anyone who so much as tried to intimidate her. Haruka admired her mentor and gave her a way out of solitude, she would of forever remains a recluse and not put herself out there. She much to thank her mentor for but she couldn't do that now could she seeing as he had passed on.
The raven haired shinigami felt a little silly, of course Gaen was not understanding her enthusiasm for Hakuda, he probably thought she was strange. She listened to him explain how he wasn't raised using martial arts and instead his family did in fact teach him how to fight so he did have experience in it. She guessed it was good to have the extra skills and catch people off guard with those thinking a 4th divisioner only knew medical kidou it made sense for them to learn destructive kidou also. Haruka seemed to light up at hearing about Capoeria, meaning it being the form of Brazilian kickboxing. ''Oh wow...i'd love to learn something like that!'' Haruka beamed with excitement. When did you get to learn something like that often.
Her once excited expression, faded a little at the mention of if she had any family in Soul Society. ''Oh...um well i might have but im not aware of them, i think i probably died and came here after something happened....im not really sure...but i did have a mentor who i considered family even if he inst blood related'' she explained. She had asked of Gaen's name and he quickly responded and she nodded ''That's ok....just show me where the food is Gaen'' she smiled a little.
I can show you the basics on Capoeria later on if you want. He said, admiring her enthusiasm. She really did seem to enjoy Hakuda quite a bit, Gaen never heard a description of a martial art he was that keen on learning about. Then again, he very rarely heard any means of combat he wanted to learn a whole lot about. Capoeria was the one exception to his otherwise pacifist nature that he practised, partially as a way to keep in shape, and partially so he had a means of self defence if he ever got into a tussle. Actually teaching somebody else a fighting style though seemed... almost silly to him considering. He was a healer, a pretty standard one at that considering he was pretty pathetic in a fight, and would rather run screaming from danger than confront it; and he was offering to teach somebody how to fight.
I wanna learn Krav Maga! Sounds totally hardcore! Holla commented, though Gaen really didn't even know HOW his avatar would be able to learn a martial art, let alone practice it. He didn't pay it much thought though as she mentioned her family, seemingly saddened by it.
I don't remember my life at all, everything I know happened happened after I woke up randomly with a bunch of other guys somewhere in Rukongai forest. Those guys became my family, and now I have an even bigger family with the rest of the shinigami, so I'm happy. He said, hoping it'd lighten her spirits a bit. He honestly considered himself lucky that he had so many people he could rely on if he needed to, it was a rare condition as far as he knew. As for food, we're here! Gaen said, making a turn around the corner to the open doors of the cafeteria. He was delighted to see the lack of people waiting in line, the lunch rush having come an gone earlier in the day. For himself, he went straight for the salad bar and fixed himself some leafy greens to go with the piece of cheesecake he pulled from the desert line. I suggest the chilli for you, and definitely some cake, get your blood sugar back up. He said, taking a seat.
