It didn't seem to matter what she said to him, he just found more faults or excuses as to why he was something like a walking plague. He boggled Meilin, was this why she couldn't stop herself from trying to help him. Because he was like a puzzle she wanted to solve? No, she knew that wasn't it. She genuinely wanted Shio to improve, beyond Tatsuya she'd never really met anyone she could compete with. Shio here had given her that someone, but he was content with hiding in the shadows which to be honest Meilin couldn't give two shits about. Her biggest concern was lack of motivation to grow, he was content with becoming stagnant. She may be reading too much into it, but to her it seemed like Shio was just merely waiting to die.
"None the less Shio, if you hadn't helped me, or given me some form of motivation, I wouldn't have been able to reach where I am now, and for that I thank you." She bowed her head slightly to him before looking up out her left eye, "However if you slap me right now, I promise you our last fight will seem like child's play." She stood to her feet and looked at Shio, "It's not a matter of credit or praise Shio, but you helped me, and I feel grateful for that. I am trying to show you my gratitude and you throw it back into my face." She shook her head as she chuckled, "You're so backwards that I just can't figure you out."
It was only a matter of time before she had told him that. She felt now while they were both relatively calm was the best time. Especially after he'd told her his story and she understood him a little better, not that it really helped to clear the mystery that was Shio. "You think by helping people you make them become bad people, so you try to help them by doing nothing and remaining on the sidelines." She paused for a second wondering if she should even continue. So far it seemed like all her words were simply falling upon deaf ears. At least she could hope some of it sank in and he'd think about it later. "Just... before you go saying you forced anyone to do anything bad, simply by being yourself. Just remember everyone has a choice in everything they do Shio. Just like you could've chose to fight back against those people yet you didn't. They also had the choice of doing those horrible things to you, or they could have chose to see you as a goal and push themselves harder. Unfortunately they chose the former. It was also their choice to remain at their current level, just like you are making that choice right now. Though if anything, I'd say you were the one forced into it, not them. Now it's your choice whether or not you're going to continue allowing this to hold you back Shio."
She turned then heading towards his door, she wasn't sure how much more she could help him at this point. He'd told her everything he seemed willing to tell her and them some, considering she had to interrogate him basically for the truth. But from here on in, it was up to Shio. She'd shown him the light, at least she hoped she had, now it was up to him if he was going to follow it or stay within the darkness where these beasts surrounding him would continue to use him as a doormat. "As for a great shinigami, that all comes from here, I believe." Her right thumb was pressed against her chest, over her heart. "It has nothing to do with how strong you are physically or how well you're performing at this job. I believe a great shinigami always give their all despite how they are viewed by others. Whether weak, strong, smart or incompetent. As long as you're willing to put out that effort to help the ones that you said you would protect when you took this job, I think you're a great shinigami. Rank isn't a necessity, though it is only passed out to those that they Seireitai perceives as great shinigami. So you're a little backwards there." She proceeded to push his door open before turning to look at him once more, "And if by some miracle you listen to me and decide to try harder, you could always turn the promotions if you're satisfied with your current position. As for what I would get from helping you to put out more of an effort... nothing really, this is just what friends are for, right?" She flashed him one more smile before waving and stepping out the door sliding it closed behind her. Whether he followed her or not was up to him, though she did hope he would at least think on their conversation.

She was still speaking, the words sliding off of Shio like water off of a duck; his guard was up, his shell fully intact. He wasn't going to let her draw him in for another let-down, he wasn't going to fall for the sappy shit again. That's what he kept telling himself. But with Meilin, there wasn't anything sappy...not truly, at least. She radiated genuiness, and passion. Surely she wasn't the sort to hide her discontent behind a smile, or to bide her time and wait for a chance to strike him when his guard was down. Surely this once, it was safe to let himself talk a little more honestly, right?
And there it was: Meilin called him a friend. God dammit, why did people throw that word around so quickly! Didn't they understand what they were stating? He moved upwards with a lurch, nearly collapsing, but before he could he was already in the midst of throwing his hand out to touch against her shoulder. His expression was...concerned, for once. He was nearly chewing on his lower lip now, his grip on her shoulder just barely avoiding being painfully tight. He inhaled slowly, and then shook his head ever so slightly.
"Don't use that word lightly, Meilin. Please, just...don't. Friendship is something I've been burned by a few too many times in the past. In any case...you can't leave just yet. The story isn't finished. You asked what happened in the academy, but that was just...part of it. There's still more to discuss." He closed his eyes for just a second, and then shut the door behind her. As a hand rose to his face, through his hair, something seemed to...shift. Now there was a harshness to his voice, a sense of overwhelming frustation, boiling over just under the surface.
"You'd think that'd be the end of it. But within a few days of joining the division, my...comrades starting outlining the heirarchy. I'm sure you had to deal with the same. New guy cleans the training grounds. New guy grabs the food for everyone else. New guy gets the heavy, clunky sword. New guy...gets to wear. Nevermind." His gaze shifted away, clearing his throat slowly. This part was...the hardest to discuss, in a way. It was here where he really felt his heart start to harden and blacken.
"It was...fun. At first. Like being part of a club. Some sort of shared experience. All in good fun, all nice. But then things started getting...harsher. I think they were starting to get frustrated that I just went along with it. Then they started making me drink...sake. A lot of it. More than I'm used to. Five, ten times. And like a good newbie, I did it. And I could just see the...the hatred in their eyes. The disgust. They started spitting in the glasses. The clever ones did it when they thought I didn't see it. The...older guys. They didn't seem to care. They -wanted- me to know. It was spit at first, but eventually it was other...excretions."
He blinked again, shame clear on his face as he once more gestured for her to sit, or come into the room properly once more.
"Everywhere I go, Meilin. It's the same. These people...every time they get too close to me. I can't explain it, but I can see it on their faces. They hate me. And that hatred makes them...reckless. If I'm not careful, I could ruin their lives. I can't afford to take this chance, Meilin...not when this just keeps happening."

As she went to step out the door, she felt the clasping hand on her shoulder. Well, it was closer to a vice grip than a simple grasp to stop her. What was it with Shio and not using normal measures to stop people from leaving when they wanted to, and he called her forceful. She looked over her shoulder at the other shinigami only to see a look of concern on his face. What? Was it something she had said? She couldn't quite figure out what the 180 on his mental state was, or why he seemed concerned. It wasn't like she was the one in trouble here, that was all him.
"Wha-"
She would have continued speaking, had Shio not began himself. Apparently he thought she used the word "friends" too lightly. It wasn't. Meilin had just truly believed they became fast friends, after all she wouldn't have spent this much time talking to someone she didn't care about, about something they didn't even care about. So what exactly was it that Shio was getting at? Before her mind could ponder his question even more, he continued his story, breaking her train of thought.
He spoke of his time after graduation. How his initial time with the squad was. And to some extent Meilin knew what he was talking about, however she handled it differently. She didn't play along, nor did she want to. Of course the approach they took with her was more forward and much more to her liking. Though Akane-sama showing up and stabbing people was a bit unexpected, cute, but unexpected. However such wasn't the case with Shio, the people that went after him were vile and disgusting. People like that made Meilin's stomach churn.
She sat when he gave the gesture and waited for him to finish before she proceeded. "Look Shio, you didn't make those people reckless. They didn't even know who you were when they started to pick on you. They're just assholes who saw you as an easy mark to have some fun with and you seemed to be that mark so they took advantage of you. You didn't make anyone become evil, or darken their souls. They were most likely like that before you met them, you're just another shinigami that came along and looked another lamb for the slaughter. If it was the case of people that you met and helped becoming angry and evil, don't you think I'd be more vengeful after our last encounter? You didn't ruin anyone's lives and you didn't make anyone evil. Some people are just like that naturally. If everyone was always good natured, I doubt we'd have a need for hell."

Yet again, Shio could feel a sharp retort rising to his throat, ready to be launched and voiced. Because of him? No one ever gave credit unless it was to find some way to take it back, plus interest. If Shio let her get away with telling people he'd done this for her, it would devolve before he realized it. It'd get out of his control. He could've pointed out that kido was the simplest thing ever to master, that it would've taken very nearly nothing at all to improve if she'd been really dedicated. He was nothing more than a glorified textbook. So many ways he could've nipped this in the bud, and gone back to sleep.
And before he could speak a word, his stomach dropped out from him, leaving him staring at Meilin, his muscles in his face going slack. He looked, for just a moment or two, as if he'd had a stroke. His skin went loose, his mouth hanging ever so slightly before common sense asserted itself and snapped it close. But as he looked at Meilin now, something in his gaze was different. There wasn't as much fight there as he heard her speak, as her words penetrated him, struck at his very heart and seemed to draw blood. He turned away, walking back towards the bed and settling in on it in dead silence, as he could feel his mind nearly swimming.
Of course he'd considered what she'd said. Of course he knew that there existed scumbags and douchebags. Of course he knew that all of this was bound to happen at some point...but it was another thing entirely to have someone else bring it up. He rested there, unable to even look at Meilin.
"It's...convenient. To blame myself. I know in the end I'm just running away from the problem. But I told myself for so long...I told myself it'd pass. When I was in the Rukongai, when my entire life was nothing but agony...I held onto the knowledge that when I got into the academy, things would change. That there'd be a new life for me. And it was good...until they started to realize the kind of person I was. And it turned out they were all just as...petty. And selfish. And cruel. As everyone I'd met up to then. And I told myself it'd all go away when I graduated. That was when I'd finally be surrounded by peers. By people I could...people I could trust. I've spent my entire life convincing myself that the next step would be the step to happiness. I told myself that if I could bear it, it would just...go away. And every time I get free from one petty, selfish douchebag...there's another. It's endless, Meilin. How am I supposed to fight against an endless stream of the same thing, Meilin? It's like...like being asked to stand under a waterfall, and change the course of the tide. It's...just so much easier. To believe that there was something I did wrong. Something I could've done right. Something I could've done at all."

Well he was finally admitting to what she's been saying this whole time. It seemed he was starting to see some sense, and she didn't even have to beat it into him. It was about time that he was honest with himself. "Only a masochist would torture themselves like that, are you a masochist Shio?"
Of course she was merely playing with him, but she was finally glad to see he had opened up some to her, instead of remaining so withdrawn and cold. Perhaps now he'd give the world a chance and try instead of shying away in this tiny corner. Stuck in the shadows. Though if this was what he wanted and he was satisfied with it, she supposed she couldn't force him to leave. She still couldn't understand how it was that he saw the shouldering the burden of others easier, but she didn't bring it up.
Perhaps now he would try harder, and give his all again. Maybe not. Who knew, she wasn't sure how much more she could do at this point. The rest was pretty much all up to Shio, he had to make that decision to step out from beneath the oppressive shadows of the ones that abuse him and treat him like trash cast over him.

Shio managed to smile, but it was a faint, almost weak twitching. He fell back onto his bed, shaking his head slightly and then speaking in a slow, almost harsh tone that sounded almost angry.
"I'm honestly not sure, Meilin. All I know is that it's not going away, no matter what I do. It's the same thing, over and over. Different names, different faces...and the same problems, everywhere I go. This pain is just...normal, for me. I suppose you can say I'd rather stick with what I know, over the unfamiliar. I certainly know that every time you claim to be my...friend. Every time you say you...care. I get worried. I get defensive. The few friends I had were...fickle, at best. And I've just come to take it for granted. That friendship is conditional. That one day you'll walk out on me, one day you'll...get tired of it. And one day it'll go back to the way it was."
He balled his fists once more, his chest hitching with heavy, pained movements that looked suspiciously like held back sobs. And this time when he inhaled, there was a faintly wet sound in the back of his throat, a sound that seemed to speak of incredible, indescribable disappointment. Yes, this was all wrong. She was supposed to be berating him and mocking him, was supposed to be tossing him under the bus...or at the very best, being so overwhelmingly painfully obvious in her attempts to brown-nose that it was almost funny. But this...this was something Shio wasn't used to dealing with.
"Our worlds are different, Meilin. You couldn't begin to understand what it's like when you've dealt with nothing but cruelty and pettiness. You have no idea how...how this feels. Please stop trying to act like you know what I should be doing. All you're doing is...twisting the knife. Driving it a little deeper."

He hadn't reacted at all how she had hoped to her playful words, it seemed Shio wasn't really in a joyous mood and she couldn't blame him. She blamed herself in part to be truthful, drudging up his painful memories, but it was necessary. He couldn't keep running away, he needed to face these fears and problems head on or they would take him over. Meilin didn't want to see that happen to him, especially when the only reason is because someone dislike the fact that he was naturally more skilled than them..
However when he addressed saying she was the one making things worse she was somewhat taken aback. Sure she blamed herself but after hearing him speak, she definitely hadn't expected that to come next. It was almost as if his personality did a 180 on her. "What do you mean I'm making it worse?" Why couldn't he understand she just wanted to help him? "I'm not trying to tell you what to do Shio, I'm just trying to help you the only way I know how, which was always to just face it head on, but you keep treating me like I'm your enemy." She stood to her feet once more, "And frankly it hurts a lot more when you keep throwing my help back in my face than when you cut me with your sword. If you don't want my help or me around I'll take my leave. I can't force you to change, but I do hope you'll at least listen to what I've said." She turned then and headed for the door in an attempt to exit once more,

"It's...hard to explain, Meilin. All I know is that seeing you working so hard for someone you hardly know...getting my hopes up. It hurts. It's difficult, convincing myself that this...is over. That it's not going to happen, all over again. I...appreciate that you're trying to help. But help is something I'm not used to. I don't...none of this makes sense!" He clenched his fists once more, trying to hold back his sobs and his despair, trying to mask his tears. He couldn't figure out what was going on in Meilin's mind, what she expected from him...but he knew that there wasn't any way she wouldn't tear him to shreds when the time was right.
"Thank you. Really, Meilin. But this isn't a problem I can fight my way out of. This isn't something I can just...charge into head-on. I tried to fight back for far too long, and it was always...pointless. One day, you'll understand. You'll face an obstacle that you won't be able to fight your way past. And when that day comes...I sincerely hope I can help you, Meilin. Until then..." He just sighed, hands resting in his lap as he rose just slightly, watching Meilin heading for the exit.
"I just don't know who's to blame, Meilin. There's been so much...pressure. For so long. And I don't even know who I'm fighting, or what I'm fighting for..."
He rose slowly, his legs trembling and quivering, running a hand over his face once more. He wanted...he wasn't sure, anymore. He had no idea what he was even doing here, why he had even put up with all of this...mostly, he just knew he wanted to lie down once more, to sleep and forget all of this had happened.
"Goodbye, Meilin. Should you ever need something...feel free to stop by."
