Today, instead of sweeping the barracks of the Seventh Division, Ichika was setting up some dummy targets on the field, which was the first time the auburn-haired girl ever performed such a job. It all started with one question:
Just whose job is it to replace these dummies we destroy on a per-minute/by-the-hour basis?
So she researched. Then she found out.
And for one day, she was doing that job. This was nice because:
1) She found out where they were being made 2) She learned about the peak times and low times, so that meant she also knew the best times to use the field. 3) She learned where all the destroyed ones went.
So with that, she set about her task.
-A good fifteen minutes later-
As the final one went up, she noticed she had a few targets for Kido practice left over. Hmm...
Well, it can't hurt for her to have a go, right? Every Shinigami has a little something to practice, and Ichika wanted to make sure she was in shape for the time it really mattered. How many Shinigami die wishing that they had just practiced their abilities a bit more? Maybe there weren't a lot of Shinigami dying, but in a world that deals with death, this can be a very good reason for a person's downfall! Unfortunately, nobody is able to ask the dead.
So the only solution is to heed all advice.
Taking aim at one of the targets with her palm and supporting that arm with her other hand, she began the chant.
「天光満つる所に我は在り Tenkō mitsuru tokoro ni ware ha ari "Mine place be filled with the heaven's light
来世の門開く所に汝在り raise no monhiraku tokoro ni nanji ari Thine place be the opening to afterlife
輝く御名の許 Kagayaku mina no moto Under thy shining Lord’s name
天竜が咆哮により万象を薙ぎ払え! tenryū ga hōkō ni yori banshō wo nagiharae! The Divine Dragon’s roar shall strike all!
響け、天罰の雷!」 Hibike, tenbatsu no ikazuchi! Resound, thunder of heaven’s judgement!"
A mighty rumble rang through the wide ground as Ichika gathered an incredible mass of energy at her palm.
A flash of light. A cannon of energy. Light that surpassed light. Thunder that surpassed thunder. The power that roared like a mythical dragon and threatened to shatter the skies burst forth and made the targets regret everything they've ever done.
Which wasn't anything, really. They were just standing there, but in the next moment they were gone. All that was left was scorched earth and a very shallow but wide trench-shaped depression extending from the girl to the targets and beyond.
She might have aimed a bit too low on that one. Oh well, Ichika shrugged and replaced the targets with the extras. She was satisfied enough that she was able to pull that power on a whim, which she would need to pull out if anything like that strange abyssal creature ever showed up again.
Speaking of mistakes, she also kind of forgot there might be someone around to witness that, even if few people ever came around at this time.

We don't have anybody really at the moment, but we just sent somebody to the training barracks to do a little maintenance, you can probably catch up to her and offer your assistance.
That was what he was told at the Nanabantai barracks when he had inquired about the outreach program request. One of the officers was kind enough to hear about the request but before he was able to confirm anything, he would have to present it to the taicho, which could be a while depending on the circumstance. At least the officer was courteous enough to pin point to a possible individual to whom he can lend his assistance to. Mazaki was one of the newest members of the Kidoshu, and given some recent events, it was his interest of becoming an individual who was more involved with the 13 Court Guards. Normally the Kidoshu only offer assistance when it comes to establishing barriers or creating seals or breaking them... it was about time to break out of that norm and become acquainted and make some allies.
Light was in abundance as Apollo, the sun god, was still at labor, passing the sun across the azure sky. While it was warm, cool breezes kept it bearable. Mazaki made his way to the training grounds, passing through the stone tunnels that lead just outside the Seireitei walls where the field was scarred, burnt, and abused with countless hours of Shinigami practicing and honing their art. Mazaki is quite familiar with this place, as there has been some time of which he has practice some of his kido here too.
A figure in the distance, perhaps a good 50 meters away, stood in the field. A sudden wave of reiryoku swept the field, catching Mazaki off guard as he shielded his eyes by crossing his arms infront of his face. As he looked over them, he paid witness to a most impressive display of Kido mastery as a cannon of reiryoku shot out from the female demolishing several practice dummies in the wake of this beam of energy. When he felt that it was safe, he advanced and spoke out once close enough.
That was a very impressive Kido there... one of which I don't believe is registered in the Kido books. Must be a spell that you created.
If he had gotten her attention, he would respectively bow his head, rising shortly after to introduce himself.
My name is Mazaki Hiroshi of the Kidoshu, my apologies if I interrupted your session.
Kyokujitsu, his zanpakuto, rested securely on his left side, fastened to his sash. Mazaki stood at 6 foot 2 inches (188 cm), a relatively thin figure, black hair in abundance to neck length with hair covering his left eye. He awaited her response before he would continue.
As Ichika got to erecting the new targets in the aftermath of her attack, a voice came like thunder from a clear sky. It wasn't anything intimidating, but for Ichika who did not expect anyone to be around, it was unexpected enough to give her a fright.
"Fweh?!?" An unintelligible cry escaped her lips as she quickly turned to meet the visitor, almost dropping the target to the floor as the balance had yet to be adjusted. He was almost half a meter taller with a rather expressionless face. Before she could process what he had just said to her on his approach, he already lowered his head and introduced himself. Quickly, she returned the gesture, bowing.
"I'm Amaori Ichika, Seventh Division Twentieth Seat. I was just... uh, having a bit of fun with my job."
She made her excuses, but her mind instantly refuted it. It was not that fun and the overly obvious scar in the ground would have pushed the boundaries of "fun" too far.
It was now that she finally understood the comment he made about her Kido. "That's not true, actually."
Foreseeing his inevitable confusion as the Kido had no number on it, she continued: "It's a modified version of the Hado #88: Flying Dragon Striking Heaven Shaking Thunder Cannon. I just upped the power and range, so it's not a very impressive feat."
Maybe displays of that level of power were impressive. That kind of Kido was very high leveled, but it was not an impressive feat to Ichika because she did not make it out of fun, but out of necessity. If there wasn't a foe that required that level of power to successfully kill, then she wouldn't ever have bothered.
Even as she fumbled for her words, the target dummy almost falling from her grasp, he smiled and let out a few chuckles. While his facade was often blank and without a read, it did not mean that he did not know how to smile. It wasn't fabricated, nor did it hide any truth beneath it, whenever Mazaki was amused, he would express it. He reached out and provided some support for the dummy, allowing her to obtain her balance once again. He certainly did not mean to give her a shock, but he should also announced himself earlier.
Not many can say that they can take hiryugekizokushintenraiho and make a more powerful variation of it. While it is probably one of the most powerful Hado's in our books, I won't be able to truly understand what you had to experience to say that it was not efficient the way it was.
What Mazazki was more impressed with was the fact that she was a seated officer, albeit, the 20th position, with that kind of display of control, it could lead to false impressions of the seated individuals from third to nineteenth. After giving out enough compliments, Mazaki felt that it was necessary to reveal his intentions; as anybody who has been standing there for long enough, he did not wish for her to misunderstand him at all.
I was hoping to run into you, truthfully, I had requested of the Soshi to gain experience working with representatives of the divisions within the 13 court guards. My goal is to build a rapport between the Kidoshu and of course the Goteijūsantai, one that extends further than a team of Kido practitioners. I understood what my role was as a member of the Kido Corps, however, I feel that my responsibilities to the Seireitei can be more fulfilling.
Mazaki did not seem to care what the plans for him were, he was given his expectations... they were not good enough. To simply be greater Kido users, to be expert Kido users... was that the only option that he could aspire to?
I do not wish to disrespect my duties... I wish to exceed them by establishing trust among individuals across the Seireitei... I may just be starting in my growth, but I feel that I can be somebody that people can depend on.
It wasn't until now that he had realized that he had ranted on more than he needed. Quickly, he changed his straight face into an embarrassed expression, waving his hands in front of him like he was just caught with a dirty magazine.
I mean! I just wanna be helpful that's all!
A bit flustered.... he could only hope that his speech didn't reek of self-righteousness.

Ichika's first thought was that she found his smile quite charming. Ichika had displayed exceeding levels of maturity at times, due to the things she had experienced, but she was not immune to love. A handsome man or a pretty woman could still steal her attention for a moment. She was not completely incompetent as to become unable to process his words, though.
Listening to them, it reminded Ichika of her early experiences as a Shinigami. Absolutely never disrespect one's duties, work as your job dictates. The difference was that her ambition was not to surpass, but accomplish her job with absolute certainty. Since she had to break up fights back when she was in the Ninth Division, that meant becoming strong enough to break up any fight.
"That's not a bad ambition. To go beyond the distance is fine. Some treat being a Shinigami not as a job but a place to obtain and show off power. However, aiming at the biggest responsibilities is often not a good idea in the world of Shinigami.
In this world, there are Men beyond Men, Heavens beyond Heavens and Beasts beyond Beasts... There is a saying like this that means that 'There is always someone better out there', but have you actually seen a man that was beyond men, a sky beyond our sky and a beast beyond beasts? I have seen them. If you have ever seen our Captain Commander display his power and skill, you have already seen one of the three.
Just the basic job of a Shinigami is too much to bear in the recent years because all kinds of whatevers keep aiming at it. You've seen what I can do, yet the distance I have walked is not far enough. I can't say I was always strong, but it's been almost twenty years."
Sighing, she turned her attention back to the target she had been setting up. Raising her hands, she got back to work.
"Well, as for you being helpful now, you can always start by setting up the last one over there." She gestured with a finger to a prop on the ground. "That will go twenty meters behind this one I'm working on. I'll show you where the cleanup and storage is later."
Mazaki nodded as he grabbed the practice dummy, heading toward the direction that Miss Ichika had pointed him to, fixing the pole onto the prop till it hit the bottom of the fitted slot. He stood next to it, as it stood about his chest level. Mazaki smiled as he placed his arm around it, resting it over the opposite shoulder of the target.
That is truly an insightful observation, Ichika-san; but to that, I state a challenge.
He said as he adjusted the target on the dummy, almost as if he were adjusting the fit of a shirt that it was wearing. With a good pat on the dummy's head, he began to walk back toward Amaori. One thing did struck to his mind that she did mention; some people see being A shinigami as a job. He always compared it to a service; something that he provides; a warranty of some sort... the last thing that Mazaki ever saw this as was a job.
For those that look at being a member of the Seireitei, a Shinigami, being a job... I could not fathom what other thoughts that would go on in their heads. When you are providing more than just a particular trade, can you really call something such as protecting the right of life a job? I can even compare the Seireitei to the Military Divisions of the Real World. It isn't a job, it is an honorable service that you are providing to others in more ways than one. Striving to be better, striving to bring upon more than the call of duty... it isn't such a hurtful thing, if you know what your goals are..... my goals... are crystal clear.
Mazaki turned back around, beginning to familiarize himself with the area, knowing full well he might find himself countless times in these fields. Learning how to set up everything, how to clean up and even replace destroyed stands might be very useful. At the moment, his journey into learning Kido had only begun, eventually, his knowledge of the field will increase, as well as in other areas. His biggest concerns will always be grasping what is currently intangible, bridging that gap between his limits to what lies ahead.
Have you ever hit a wall during your growth, Ichika-san? Have you ever encountered a moment in which you thought you would be stuck forever? If so... how did you break through?
He looked over to the petite shinigami, truly interested in her response to his deep inquiry.

Ichika could see it: She could see the the ideals that this man held. She could understand the light in which he viewed the Gotei 13 as. To his mindset and ideals, Ichika would not say anything further. She had no intention of changing his mind. As long as it would not hurt him, there was no point in killing his happiness.
Turning to him she watched him observe the area before approaching him and tapping him on the shoulder to get his attention. Gesturing for him to follow her, she walked over to an inconspicuous corner that would be extremely easy to miss. Reaching out a hand to what seemed to be emptiness her hand found a handle. Pulling, she revealed a cabinet with brooms and other cleaning equipment. Handing a broom to him she picked one for herself before closing it and walking back to the grounds for a sweep.
She thought about the answer to his question as the broom moved back and forth, shifting the dust as it went.
"You have to find the 'way' and walk it." was the first thing that came to her mind. "I don't mean something like just doing your job. Yes, I know it sounds like I've just contradicted everything I've just said.
It... starts with a strong wish. If I were to boil down everything like that that pushed me forward, the wish was 'to reach something'. In my academy days, it was 'for my sword to reach that person'. In my days as the Ninth Division, I couldn't keep the peace if the people disturbing it were stronger than me, so it was 'to reach that realm'. In the end, I developed the power from the depths of my soul that can ultimately be condensed to 'the power to reach something with my will'. I can even perform soul burial without being anywhere close to the Plus.
Therefore, you must have a strong wish stemming from your entire soul, the dedication to forge the way, to walk it and to walk even further."
It was a lot harder than she made it sound. She had broken once from it and she was lucky to not have died before she properly found the way. Whether he will or not, was not for her to intervene. Everybody's way was different. If he was to follow down the road she traveled, he might reach the realm she had reached, but he would not surpass her. Therefore, he must find his own way.
