It was far too late in the evening for Liam to have any patience for this. He just wanted to get out of the house for a quiet evening walk before he went to sleep. But it seems that living in one of the most spiritually dense areas in Japan meant that anyone with a shed of spiritual power was not allowed a moment of peace.
As the large shrieking bat-like Hollow swooped towards him, Liam simply sighed. Something like this was tiresome, his compassion stopped him from simply destroying the creature with ihs arrows from a distance. He always had to get in close if he ever wanted to take down a Hollow without outright obliterating it.
In a blur of Hirenkyaku, Liam vanished from the Hollow's sight mere moments from impact. As the startled beast crashed into the ground, Liam reappeared right above its head. Driving his now Blut-enhanced leg into the back of the monster's head with a devastating heel drop. Slamming the creature's face into the dirt.
The Hollow's body shuddered from impact and fell limp. Knocked unconscious from the impact but not dead. While Liam knew for sure that his arrows outright obliterated souls, he had no idea what effects his other techniques had. But there was little reason to risk such a thing. Not when other alternatives were available.
Sitting himself on top of the Hollow's unconscious form, Liam began to flare his Reitsu at regular intervals. A strong pulse every few seconds. Hopefully drawing the attention of someone who could finish off this Hollow for him.
As chance would have it, there was indeed someone nearby willing and able to deal the finishing blow, albeit in a way entirely missing the point of sparing the creature in the first place. Drawn to the intentional outpouring of Quincy energy, Audra introduced herself, as was her custom, with a bang. The bang in question being the literally thundering impact of her spiritual spear as she landed without the slightest hint of grace but boatloads of style. In the kneeling stance that followed the loud entry, the hollow could be seen rapidly disintegrating as the second Quincy stood up with a smirk. How was THAT for an entrance? Not too many people just fell from the sky by way of introduction, much less made it their signature attack and did it in heavy armor. Flourishing her spear a bit, she laid the weapon over her right shoulder.
So, I was right after all. A Quincy whose face I don't know. Don't see THAT too often these days. Audra wasn't certain what to make of the stranger. If she didn't know his face, that meant he probably didn't belong to the Invisible Empire. That could mean he was a mongrel who lucked into sharing blood with his Majesty...or perhaps he was a comrade waiting to happen, who'd been missed by the other recruiters (lazy morons, as far as she was concerned, but alot of people fell under that sweeping judgement). Certainly, his reiatsu was more developed than the loosers she'd found herself training of late. Talking to a peer would be refreshing, if nothing else. Of course, he was still a strange one. The hollow had been down. A stiff breeze would have killed the damn thing. Why hesitate? Or was that simply his way of meeting people, offering them the final blow as a courtesy? That was still weird, but a damn sight more decent than your average handshake.
It was certainly a flashy entrance. So flashy in fact, that Liam disappeared in another blur of Hirenkyaku from his position on the Hollow. Reappearing a short distance away, revolver summoned and leveled right at the head of the newcomer. Friendly or not, they made enough of an entrance to put Liam on guard.
It did take a moment for him to recognize her spiritual signature. It was early similar to both his own and the Old Man's. Her following comment pretty much confirmed his guess. This woman in front of him was a fellow Quincy. And judging by the density of her Reiatsu, just as strong as him.
A small hiss escaped his lips as he just realized what happened. It was not a human or Shinigami his spiritual pressure called. But instead another Quincy. One that had no issue performing the very action he had hoped to avoid.
It seems that the universe was not without a cruel sense of humor today. In his effort to save the Hollow, he had ended up consigning the poor beast to oblivion. With a small sigh, Liam allowed his bow to dissipate back into Reishi particles. While he was certainly upset in regards to what had happened. Holding it against his rather distant cousin would not be fair. The woman simply acted in a way that she thought was right. While Liam disagreed with the method his clan used to exterminate Hollows, he could understand their originally noble intentions.
"Nice armour." He called out, his voice repetitively cheerful in spite of everything. "Didn't know there was any conventions going on." At least Liam assumed that this woman's armour was cosplay. I mean, normal people hardly ran around in a full suit of armour. So chances are this woman was either rather passionate about dressing up for conventions, or there was some other reason for decking herself out in platemail.
Wise ass. The convention is to wear something more than your ego when you go hunting. Sure, Blut's great and all, but Blut AND armor's better. Plus, a bit of extra force when you're hitting somethin's always good. The fact that she had...underdeveloped Blut was something of a sore spot for her, to be honest, given how much pride she took in it. Activating it was effortless, given her bloodline, but going further had been stymied of late. Too much training of newby Qincy and not enough training herself. Heck, she'd had to dumb down her abilities so as not to kill them too quickly! This little evening excursion was the first time she'd had to stretch in two weeks.
Another convention is introduction, since I'd remember you and you'd sure as hell remember me. Audra Boreas, of His Majesty's Soldat. The casual stance she'd held a moment ago tightened up a bit, not quite making a salute but obviously a sign of respect to her topic. Not much got Audra into a formal mood, but pride in the Empire wasn't small potatoes. She once again considered Liam, not sure what to make of him. He'd used stepping, at more or less her level, so he wasn't small fry. Why hadn't he been picked up yet? It was wasteful. Well, maybe she'd play recruiter today. It'd be fun to rub the others' nose in it.
"If I ever end up fighting something that can pierce my Blut, I don't think armour will help much." Liam admitted, scratching the back of his head. While his own level of mastery Blut was nothing to sneeze at, there were still many things capable of piercing it.
Things such as That Man when he gets anyway serious.
A small shiver ran up Liam's spine as a rather unpleasant memory came forth. No need to think of all those times your head dented the wall Liam. Lock those memories deep down where you will never see them again and be done with it. Its not like your lifestyle causes enough stress on your psyche, a few repressed memories don't mean much in the long run.
"Liam O'Brian. Gemischt, student and occasional Hollow wrangler." He greeted the woman, unsure of why exactly he flat out told her the "purity" of his blood. Maybe it was how other Quincies greeted each other? Give each other random facts about themselves. This woman started spouting off some nonsense that mean nothing to Liam. What the hell was a Soldat?
The silence hung in the air for a few moments. He didnt want to admit out loud that the woman was confusing the hell out of him. In contrast to her formal manner when it came to speaking of the Empire. Liam's posture was nothing but relaxed. With his shoulders slouched and his hands in his pockets.
"I'm sorry. But I have no idea what you are talking about." He finally admitted, looking slightly apologetic as he did so. Soldat? His Majesty? They both meant nothing to him. It would be safe to say that Liam's knowledge on Quincy lore was sorely lacking.
Yeah, figured. Most of the Echt signed up already. So, that was cleared up. The fact that the term Soldat was a foreign term meant that he'd never heard of the Empire. That was good, at least. If he HAD, and was still outside it, that meant he'd turned down an offer and they'd have to fight. Which, yeah, would be awesome, but Audra wasn't interested in thinning the bloodlines yet further. Even if someone had muddled things up a bit already, fact remained that he was still a decedent of the first.
Of course, that didn't make him, specifically, a worthy addition to the Vanderreich. A family could be viable, but if the individuals within were weak emotionally, or stupid or too proud to join up...If she was going to explain, she'd better offer, and she'd better offer only to someone that made sense. Too many potential screw ups if word got out. Turning from Liam and pacing a bit, she pondered her options. One stood out as interesting enough to try.
I was on my way to deal with a growing infestation in a park nearby. Some hollow's...spawning, I guess you could call it. Not the usual way. I'm off to purge the nest. You want answers, or just to keep the area safe, come with me and let me see you work. If I like what I see, I'll fill you in. And yes, it's worth knowing. Life changing, as her grin intimated. Aside from getting the blood flowing a bit, her mission would allow her to properly asses a few things before saying "Well, the Quincy aren't all dead and we're actually kinda poised to rule the multiverse". She hoped he wouldn't disappoint. She'd dealt with far too much of that of late.
Most of the Purebloods had signed up? Well that was certainly interesting. Regardless of the results of this evening, Liam would be having words with the Old Man regarding that little tibdit. Whoever this woman represented, they seemed to not only be organized. But rather secretive. Time to see what he can find out.
"I guess I'll help out. But while we're here I just have one tiny request." He began, already making a motion to indicate that the elder Quincy should take the lead. "I don't really like the idea of consigning whoever the Hollow ate to oblivion. So if you don't mind, I prefer to cripple and maim instead of killing." Chances are if he let it out that he wanted to spare the Hollows regardless of if they had eaten or not, Liam would lose any chance of gathering information. Best he play it safe for now. Learn what he can and then make an informed decision.
Chances are Audra was right, the information would indeed be worth it. However if the information would be either good or bad for him depending on what it entailed.
"What do you mean by spawning anyway?" Was it infecting other with its' Reiatsu? Creating more of its kind? Or perhaps creating a number of copies of itself.
Lovely, a bleeding heart type. Minus one point. Hope he's good in a fight, at least. Audra didn't bother hiding an exasperated sigh. This had better not turn out to be more trouble than it was worth, even if he was at least brave enough to come along with a stranger to deal with an unknown hollow threat.
Look, it's not a nice situational, because the world isn't nice. I mean, yeah, if we could get a few tricks to knock souls back into the cycle, go right ahead. We don't have that luxury though. If we let the others deal the finishing blow every time, you come up against one big problem: hollow reproduce all naturally. Doesn't need any help, so they keep showing up while we're trying to get enough people up to snuff to deal with them. Hollows bread out of control, EVERYONE gets eaten, nobody's around to save them, game over for the world. The only "safe" people are literally in Hell. Without Quincy support, the world's fucked. There just aren't enough strong humans or robes to go around otherwise. You do what you want, but I'm not sitting on my hands when I can make a rough situation a little bit better. It was very in keeping with Audra's personality to not accept inaction. The restraint felt...wrong. That intense violence was the solution was a bonus.
Of course, you ever figure out how to stop them without obliterating them, I'm all ears. I know some people who'd be damn interested in distributing that. Stepping smoothly through the air toward the objective point, she eventually came to a pause over the park's treeline, pointing a spear into a grove that had seen better days.
The view below was gut wrenching and the smell wasn't much better. The only way to identify that mass as a hollow, beyond its reiatsu at least, was the enormous, cracked mask in the rough center of it. The rest was too...organic. Most hollows were your basic monster layout, but this thing looked more "realistic". Except no actual living thing could have lived like that. Large as a two story building but partially collapsed under its own weight, the beast looked like someone had liquefied a bunch of bone and tissue, mixed it together and hardened it again. Muscle was exposed at points, along with jutting bone shards at odd angle. That would be vile enough, if it weren't releasing some sort of purple-black liquid into the ground, which was spreading like a carpet of moss on the forest floor. From this angle, Audra could see bits of it through the canopy. She'd give it a few hours before the park was overtaken. Maybe a day or two before someone's house out of the park got covered, if the locals didn't decide to try and burn it down. Which wouldn't happen, since from the expanding corrupted ground was errupting periodically with miniature hollow like creatues like insects in some sort of awful hive.
Well. That was certainly a lengthy justification. Not one he entirely agreed with, but an explanation none the less. "Whatever helps you sleep at night." He snipped back, not quite that happy with how Audra was speaking to him. As if he was some naive child who didnt know any better. He knew damn well how bad this world was. But people with attitudes like her own were not helping the problem.
"And that obliteration problem is an ongoing project." He replied, falling into line behind Audra, staying right on her heels with his own Hirenkyaku. Allowing the pure blood to lead the way for now. Liam would probably have to work harder to keep himself in her good books. He damn well hoped this information would be worth it. He didn't want to have such a burden on his conscience for nothing.
"Ah. So that's what you meant by spawning." He commented. It was certainly something, he didn't even know Hollows could end up like that. A gigantic amorphous blob that seemed to just suck in everything around it. "The hell are those smaller Hollows?" He asked out loud, doubtful that Audra would answer his question. As far as he knew, Hollow by their very nature, could not not breed like that.
Another thing he noted was that he actually might be forced to destroy it. It lacked a humanoid shape that he could simply knock out and throw into a portal. By normal means, it would be downright impossible to stop the beast without ending it.
"In and out quick, we hit the mask hard?" He suggested, leaving the true battle plan up to the one who most likely had more experience then him. "Do you know what class it is?" Best if he get a general idea of his opponent's strength before he engaged. Liam was not one for rushing into battle without knowing how strong his opponent was.
Hopefully he was just dealing with an unusually annoying Gillian.
Hell if I know. I'm willing to bet they're animals, or were. Don't see creature hollows like that much outside Hueco Mundo, but they're apparently a thing. Or they're a part of that thing. Sooner its gone, sooner I can stop caring. And given its size, my money's on gillian. Frankly, it didn't feel all that strong to her, just gross. Maybe it was a failed gillian, a regressed one?
That'd be Plan A, yeah. Cover me, in case it's not as stupid as it is ugly. Granted, some part of Audra figured it was probably not a good idea to trust someone she'd just met with keeping her from dealing with a surprise attack, but caution was not in her nature and a quick, violent solution appealed to the animal part of her brain that had taken up residence in the "decisions" section. Stomping her foot a moment on the platform she was standing on, she pulled in a quick sure of reishi particles and, without so much as a word, leaped into the air like the planet was running away from her. Reaching an adequate height, she kicked off and sent herself hurtling toward the sedentary beast. Trusting in her technique to shield her from the sheer acceleration, she was unsatisfied as her spiritual spear hit not the mask, but a whip-like tendril that swatter her out of the way. Alright, apparently it wasn't quite so sluggish, despite being otherwise immobile. Annoying.
'k, that didn't work. Let's see how it likes more than one attack at once... Raising her weapon skyward, she fired a bolt of blue-white lightning into the sky, instantly dispersing at the appropriate height into glowering storm clouds with sparks flickering about. Don't suppose you've got anything that could use a distraction to work?
He had to admit, it was an impressive technique that Audra had. While crashing down on top of your opponent was a bit too loud and direct for Liam's tastes, he could still appreciate the effectiveness and brutality of such an attack. Of course he still had to hold in a chuckle as Audra was swatted away by an apparently dexterous tentacle.
So it seemed that this Hollow at the very least knew how to defend itself. It was too much for him to hope that it had simply gone dormant, content to spread itself outward and relying on the smaller spawn to defend itself. But it seems that getting in close was not the wisest course of action.
Thank goodness Liam was part of a clan that specialized in long range combat.
"I have something that might help." Liam stated, drawing forth his own bow in a flash of condensed Reishi. Compared to Audra's own weapon that appeared as direct and full of power as the woman who wielded it. Liam's own bow spoke volumes for himself.
Small, unassuming compared to the fancier bows out there. But no less deadly because of it.
"Try not to get sucked up." He chimed, barely trying to hide the note of mirth in his voice as his power began to condense in the tip of his bow. Before firing off at the Hollow. From his bow, a grey wispy-looking arrow streaked forth, burying itself deep into the earth in front of the beast.
For a moment, nothing happened. Until suddenly the earth in front of the Hollow exploded as Liam's technique finally activated. Forming out of nothing but his own power and the Reishi in the air. A tornado sprang into life from where his arrow hit. The whipping winds attempting to slice at the Hollow, all while sucking up its brood, dragging them kicking and screaming into the vortex.
Against a stationary opponent like this. Such a technique was certainly potent. And cost effective as well. Despite its large scale, it did not take much effort to form. Even if it did no damage to the beast, it would still be enough to inconvenience it.
{Spoiler}Name: Cyclone Arrow Class: Quincy Style Tier: III Type: Offensive Range: 100 Meters Duration: 8 Posts. Description: Firing off an arrow that seems to emit small wisps of smoke. Where the arrow lands. A large tornado springs into existence. This cyclone can be commanded mentally and travels at half-bala speed. At greater advantages. At equal advantages it is a struggle, but quite possible to resist getting sucked into the vortex and sliced by the cutting winds. At greater advantages, getting sucked into the tornado is all but assured. Lower? One might have unsteady footing or get dust in their eyes.
Of course since it IS a tornado, one must be careful to not get hit by flying debris. Liam himself is immune to the wind's pull due to his own Reiryoku being used in its construction.
