There are few that embody masculinity more than Grindal Horist. Almost as if he is stepping out of your stereotypical sexy lumberjack calendar, the man is the true representation of what a "man" should be. Coming across the male, one of the first people notice is his muscularity. Certainly like one who spends a vast majority of their time at the gym, definition is sculpted into every ounce of his flesh. Every motion his body makes is a literal dance of rippling muscle fibers. It stretches from something as simple as a casual stroll to a playful Jersey-style fist pump (do the kids even do this anymore?).
Outside of his build, perhaps the next thing one notice is his fuzziness. Typical of someone who drinks substances that "puts hair on your chest," the man is a hairy beast. His "fur" is located in your typical androgenic spots (chin, underarms, forearms chest, naval, legs and groin) and is often thick enough to easily run one's fingers through. It is far from sloppy and is frequently trimmed to not be overbearing. This mostly applies towards his beard that is easily a couple inches in growth. In his own words, he cares for his beard more than most care for the locks on their heads.
If capable of seeing it underneath his fuzzy exterior, the next thing to see is numerous scars that cover his body. It is the natural side effect of being a warrior, especially one with very limited durability skills. Generally limited to your occasional knick and raised service, the largest one actually stretches across the bridge of his nose. It is a large gash that is hard not to notice. Though some question why he hasn't had plastic surgery to repair it, he claims its merely an extension of his character.
Clothing for Grindal varies depending on the situation. Generally speaking, he prefers comfortable fabrics that allow for easy movement. He, however, is no stranger to dressing to impress should the situation call for them. Tight shirts that frame over his muscles and jeans that accentuate his goods are a normal occurrence for the man. He, however, does not enjoy dressing up formally. When it comes to battle, his attire tends to fit a more medieval theme with your stereotypical suit of armor with durable leather padding and chain mail directly underneath.
PERSONALITY
Grin used to be your fairly stereotypical father. He was a caring and compassionate man that cracked really cheesy jokes routinely and enforced a “tough love” philosophy to grow and mature his girls into fine ladies. This, however, all changed when the fire nation attacked life shifted out of his control and both of his children fell victim to a hollow after a reckless use of hollow bait. Though emotionally devastated by their death, what truly ripped his heart out was the fact he was unable to save them. All he could do was watch helplessly as they were devoured right before his eyes, a haunting image that still troubles him to this day. From that moment onward, he began his quest towards power and has vowed to do anything he can (no matter what he has to do) in order to achieve it.
Despite this overflowing thirst to become a very capable fighter, the other aspect towards Grindal’s persona is his overprotectiveness. It was a trait that has been with him for nearly as long as he can remember. He is a naturally paranoid individual that hates staying within the unknown. This drive of constant fright forced him to develop various techniques to allow him to monitor and sympathize with those he bonds with: acquaintances, friends, and enemies alike. This has even earned him the nickname of the “bloodletter” for his frequent attempts of sampling another’s blood just to stay within the loop whether they are aware of it or not.
Though all of these negative traits might distinguish him into a creep, the man only holds the best intentions in heart. Those he truly bonds with are sacred treasures to the man that relights the flames of happiness within the depths of his soul. With always a helping hand ready to be extended, he is truly a nice guy to get on your good side, even if it is just to abuse his good naturedness.
HISTORY
After his father married a mere mortal who knew nothing of the spiritual world, Grindal Horist was the viewed by many to be the decline of a proud family of Echt Quincy. Though the Horist family was filled with those who held direct lineage to the Creator, the young boy’s impurity caused his branch to be expelled from all family events and relations. The separation had its perks and disadvantages. For the greater part of his early life, life was normal. There were no concerns of spiritual entities nor did the teachings of his race felt a need to be passed down. He had friends, went to public school, and even joined the school rugby team.
It was only at the age of fifteen that Grindal’s spiritual powers began to awaken. It happened during a skirmish while traveling to a distant town. After being tackled by three different males, a burst of energy surged through him and literally launched all the players upon him back a couple of feet. His father, from the stands, blinked in surprise. That was something truly unexpected but still something that required immediate action. Eventually pulled away by his old man and taken home early, the man essentially gave him the load down on his situation. This conversation educated him on the ways of his people, the powers they possessed, and the potential dangers that came with it.
Though angered by being forced to leave his school, the boy agreed to shift towards home schooling so he could train and refine his craft. This education allowed him to form a bow (or gun in his case), wield the might of ginto, mask his presence, and even manipulate the ambient energy that surrounded the globe. He even grabbed a firm grasp of the quincy artifacts and found great interest in their creation. This training, however only lasted for a few years. It was ended abruptly by an unseen killer: a brain aneurysm. What had started out as a headache ended up with him falling lifeless right at the kitchen table.
Saddened by such events and not letting his father’s power rot away, he stayed in a constant state of independent study to hopefully one day surpass his old man. With his library as his only teacher, the male learned at a much slower pace. His only profound revelation was of a technique (or perhaps ability) Echt quincy like his father seemed to be capable of demonstrating. Though he tried his best to mimic it, every attempt made only ended in failure. What it did create, however, was a cornucopia of blood-related techniques. His trial and error lead to discovery of the trace spiritual energies that resided within a drop of blood. All that was needed was a simple touch to learn so much about a person such as their location or emotional status.
As time progressed, Grindal eventually found the love of his life (or so he thought). They had two girls (twins no less) who inherited his spiritual gifts and revealed them much sooner than he did. His wife, who lacked any spiritual gifts of her own, began to gradually awaken a higher state of awareness from being surrounded the gifted. It caused her to see monsters, the deceased, and feel sensations that she didn’t like. Claiming the three as demons, she fled and eventually found refuge within a psychiatric hospital after the images didn’t stop.
Though there was a little hiccup in their family status for a while, eventually father and daughters got back on track and life continued as normal. With the girls being young Quincy’s themselves, Grin taught them to the best of their abilities. By the time they were twelve, they were shaping to become possibly an even stronger than he was. This cockiness eventually made the girls want to see just how good they were. After sneaking into Daddy’s study, they grabbed a piece of hollow bait and broke it on the outskirts of town. By the time the man realized what was going on and by the time he got there, his little angels had literally been ripped to shreds by a swarm of hollow. While they weren’t the strongest beasts, their number overwhelmed the inexperienced twins.
Defeated and feeling truly weak, the man swallowed his pride as he packed his bags and showed up on a doorstep he only faintly remembered. The Horist’s were not pleased by his presence and attacked him on the spot. Though he was defeated, his determination and cry to improve himself won over a few members of the family. The could see the potential within him, even if he was a Gemischt. Though his presence within the house hold is not a noble one, Grindal is constantly training to eventually improve and become a capable quincy under even their judgmental eye.
Name: Danze [Dance] Class: Reishi Type: Supplementary Tier: II Range: 25 Radial Meters Description: The user can create orbs of reishi and spread them around him. At will, the orbs can launch, at half bala speeds, directly toward the opponent. The user can create up to five of these orbs at a time.
Name: Kamizaiten [Godly Veil of Unsightly Flesh] Class: Reishi Tier: II Type: Supplementary Range: Self Description: With this technique, one is able to form a field of spirit particles that reflects any kind of reiatsu-sensing skill. In addition, it also masks any kind of item or power one possesses, making them look like a weak, powerless human, thus becoming virtually invisible to any spiritual being.
Name: Tachiban [Sentinel] Class: Reishi Type: Offensive Tier: III Range: 50 Meters Description: The user can create orbs of reishi and spread them around him. At will, the orbs can launch, at half bala speeds, directly toward the opponent. The user can create up to five of these orbs at a time.
Name: Tokukonki [Protective Light Wall] Class: Reishi Type: Offensive Tier: III Range: Self Description: This technique allows one to gather spirit particles into a tough shield that protects them from many kinds of attacks. Although the shield does not last very long (around 2 posts), it is an invaluable technique that has saved the lives of countless reishi users.
CUSTOM
GINTO TECHNIQUES
LIST
Name: Verfolg [Prosecute] Class: Ginto Tier: III Type: Offensive Range: 50m Incantation: “Pierce my Enemy with Godly Rage – Verflog!” Description: A single Ginto tube is thrown a the enemy, which bursts into a powerful spear capable of causing deep lacerating damage. Travels at half bala speeds.
Never quite getting the appeal or allure of a bow, Grindal’s spiritual weapon takes the form of an ornate spear-like staff. The tip is equipped with a two foot long bladed spear tip while the other expands from the his cross into a large red orb. This orb acts as the catalyst for his heilig pfeil to be fired from.
QUINCY CROSS
Grindal's cross takes the form of a stereotypical five-pronged "Quincy Zeichen." It closely resembles the one worn by Wandenreich.
QUINCY ITEMS
Item Name: Quincy Cross Description: Standard equipment for any Quincy, the Quincy Cross acts as the focus for a Quincy bow. The cross need not necessarily be in a cross shape, as Ryūken's cross is a pentacle. This is a default item and doesn't count towards the four starting items one may have.
Item Name: Ginto [Silver Tubes] Current Amount: 15 Description: Silver tubes are small, liquid-filled capsules that store spiritual energy, and are used by Quincy for spell-casting in the same way that Shinigami use Kidō. Like Kidō, they are activated by calling out various commands, but do not require any of the user's energy to activate.
Name: Seele Dolch Type: Item - Standard Tier: III Condition: [10] Description: A short, but capable close combat dagger alloyed out of Soul Synthesized Silver that should only be used in desperate times when a Quincy is forced into a range where they cannot function. The dagger is as sharp as a sealed Zanpakutou. While normally a standard double-edged short blade with a small cross guard, many a Seele Dolch have been more personally constructed to fit different fighting styles. When taking this item at creation you may change its appearance, though you are still limited to a dagger sized weapon.
Name: Seele Schild Type: Item - Armor Tier: III Condition: [10] Coverage: Hand up to Elbow, extending an inch and a half from the arm in all areas. Description: A small shield alloyed out of Soul Synthesized Silver, and designed to be worn on the bow arm without limiting movement. A practical defensive item, this is still the shield of an archer, not suited for drawn out close quarters combat. In some rare cases they are worn on both arms of quincy who favor close range combat.
Name: Rauchen [Smoke] Type: Item - Single-Use Tier: III Current Amount: 4 Description: A quincy contact grenade, comparable in size to a ginto tube but black in color, Rauchen, Blitz, and Platzen are all identical in appearance, only the user can differentiate between them. It contains a liquid that, when it comes into contact with the oxygen in the air, evaporates into a thick smokescreen. However, due to the fact that reishi is mixed into the liquid as well, it reflects any reiryoku-sensing ability of a Tier IV or below in the space of the smoke. This allows the Quincy to stun and escape pursuers or attack one's blind spot.
Name: Karte [Card] Type: Item - Single-Use Tier: III Current Amount: 10 Description: Index card sized sheets of reishi infused paper. Perhaps the most versatile of quincy items, these cards may be infused with other quincy techniques including normal arrows of tier III or lower, allowing the technique to be used from the location of the card rather than the user.
BATTLE SKILLS
Name: Blut Empathie [Blood Empathy] Class: Reishi Tier: I, III Type: Passive, Supplementary Range: 0-200m Description: A ritual created by a father who had difficulty locating his children, this sensory technique is a technique that combines bloodletting and great spiritual perception. In order to begin this technique, Grindal must first make contact with the target’s blood. By spreading it across his skin, he is able to pick up distinct traces of their spiritual energy of their reishi and use it to directly find their location. If the target is within fifty meters of him, he will instantly know of their location unless their presence is cloaked. However, by expending Tier III cost, his perception expands to essentially any range, locating all (even if cloaked) instantly. However, when within battle, this range is limited to only 200m. This technique, however, may not be used to locate targets who have been masked by item, possess a higher advantage than him, or are within a different Realm (i.e. he can not feel the presence of someone in Seireitei while he is in the human world).
Name: Blut Pakt [Blood Pact] Class: Reishi Tier: I, III Type: Passive, Supplementary Range: 0m-200m Description: A ritual created by a worrisome father, this is a technique that combines bloodletting with great spiritual perception. A pact between two or more willing individuals, Grindal begins this technique by having all parties involved to prick themselves and exchange blood with one another. Through an manipulation of both reishi and reiatsu, this action innately bonds all of those involved and creates a sixth sense that deals with their wellbeing. While far from telepathy, the technique innately transfers whether or not one is in danger, needs assistance, or even a hug. Its power connects targets as long as they are within the same realm.
The tier of this technique depends on its duration. For Tier I, this creates a bond that ends after the end of the thread (or their direct connecting thread depending on circumstance). For a Tier III, however, the bond created is permanent and may only be removed once all participants in said pact have been killed.
Name: Blut Tor [Blood Gate] Class: Reishi Tier: III Type: Supplementary Range: 0m-50m, Any (conditional) Description: By infusing reishi through his body, Grindal will coat himself in a blood-red energy only to disappear and reappear elsewhere. The distance this teleportation takes is completely dependent on the amount of concentration placed within it. If within 50 meters, Grindal (and up to three others) may instantly move to said location. However, should he had made a Blut Pakt with another, he can spend an entire post concentration of locating their presence before teleporting to their direct location. This may not be used to pass through protective barriers, travel to other realms, allow him to bypass thread tags, or be used while in combat.
Name: Hirenkyaku (Flying Screen/God Step) Class: Stepping Tier: I Range: N/A Description: Analogous to the Shinigami Shunpo or Arrancar Sonido, the Quincy Hirenkyaku allows the user to move quickly over short distances; according to Ishida Uryû it is faster than flash steps, though Kurotsuchi Mayuri's superior speed suggests that this is just a generalization. To perform the technique, the user gathers spiritual particles under their feet and rides them to the desired location. Like the air-walking skill displayed by most Arrancar and Shinigami, it can also be used to hover or fly for long distances. Kurotsuchi Mayuri compliments Ishida Uryû on being able to use this technique at such a young age, suggesting that it's difficult to master.
Name: Blutrünstig [Bloodlust] Class: Reiatsu Control Tier: I Type: Passive Range: Any Description: In the instance that Grindal witnesses the falling of blood or makes contact with said of another, the Quincy's reiatsu will flare up and radiate around him with increased vigor. This causes his eyes to glaze over with a red hue as he falls victim to innate desire to protect and destroy. This causes him to experience a +0.5 advantage towards his non-release techniques.
QUINCY STYLE TECHNIQUES - VARIANT
Name: Sternschwall [Star Surge] Class: Quincy Style Tier: IV Type: Offensive, Binding Range: 100m Description: After channeling reishi into the crimson orb of his staff, Grindal will swing his spear forward and launch forth a large lance of Tier IV energy that travels at cero-like speeds. This lance, should it make contact with a target, will pin them to a nearby object with the strength of a Tier IV binding technique. Though this is powerful itself, the technique’s true power comes from a mental command that Grindal may make at any time once fired. This will cause the lance to break down into smaller javelins that will then track down and strike against any target of his choosing within a 50 meter radius of the point in which the command was given. These beams travel at half bala speeds, hold Tier III strength, and (just like the original) pin the target to a nearby object with the strength of a Tier III binding technique. He may make up to 50 of these javelins per use.
Name: Himmelsbohrer [Heavenpiercer] Class: Quincy Style Tier: III Type: Offensive Range: 100m Description: Focusing reishi around the length of his spear, Grindal will create a blade that expands outwards from his weapon, growing at half-bala speeds upwards to 100 meters. This elongated blade holds Tier III strength and offers no noticeable weight change to his weapon while in use. This blade lasts up to five posts or until broken. Grindal may intentionally fire off this blade at half-bala speeds with Tier III strength like he would an arrow.
Name: Höllenwinkeln [Hell Beckoning] Class: Quincy Style Tier: III Type: Binding Range: 50m Description: After focusing reishi into his spear, Grindal will either stab an area with his spirit weapon or focus it into an arrow he launches forward at bala speeds. Upon striking an object, the reishi focused by this technique will create an attractive force that forcibly pulls anything around it towards it at bala speeds. The power and effects of this pull is determined by the amount of advantages the user holds over the target(s). This pull is at its strongest while within 15 meters of the epicenter, pulling in anyone without at least +2 advantage over the user towards the center and binding them in place. Up to 25 meters of the epicenter, this force will pull in anyone without at least +1 advantage over the user but the force is strong enough to limit any movement beyond walking speed. Up to 50 meters from the epicenter if anyone holds equal advantage, they will be able to stand but if they perform any action that would comprise balance such as a physical technique or high speed movement, they will begin falling towards the center. This effect lasts up to three turns and only excludes Grindal from this effect.
Name: Komet [Comet] Class: Quincy Style Tier: II Type: Offensive, Supplementary Range: 100m Description: After focusing reishi through his spear, Grindal will launch a bright arrow towards the intended target. This travels at bala speeds and has piercing Tier II strength. While useful on its own, the strength of this arrow comes from how bright it is. Once released, it glows incredibly brightly much like the sun. This prevents foes from starring directly at it. If they do, they will be blinded for two posts.
REIATSU FEATURES
When flared up, Grindal's spiritual pressure is merely bluish in appearance. However, it always seems to hold slight coopery-fragrance similar to that of blood. When filled with bloodlust, this reiatsu shifts into a more red hue.
Himmelsbohrer - Firing this one hundred meter blade a hundred meters does not make the range 200 meters. Just a note.
Sternschwall - Just because you have 50 of these just want to make sure that we are on the same page as far as their damage does not stack if they hit the same target. It would deal Tier III damage but not Tier III times the number of lances that hit.
Höllenwinkeln - Needs to follow the new AoA tech rules found in the Tech guide.
Blutrünstig - Not allowing the advantage modifying tech.
Blut Empathie - Techs that auto succeed are not allowed. If a character is cloaked then there is a large number of factors that come into whether or not you are able to find them. Tier III would make it more likely but not so that it will without fail happen.
