HISTORY

Ciel’s earliest memories are covered in blood. Despite being a child, she was subject to seeing people cut down and tortured in front of her in the messiest of the Rukongai Districts, “Zaraki.” She never knew her parents, who dumped her on her own some time ago, and her only living relative was a much younger Madeline whom she nicknamed “Maddy.” Realizing she was the older sister and only knowing their names off bracelets left around their wrists, Ciel would do whatever she could to protect her sister and assist in scavenging food and water. Eventually Ciel and Maddy would find themselves living in a small building with what could only be described as foster parents. Though beaten and touched inappropriately for many years, the brief bouts of kindness from their “father” came in the form of teaching them how to fight. These skills would prove invaluable to the older Ciel, whose hand-to-hand prowess would grow over the years. Eventually she was taught how to make weapons out of the wood lying around the home and would fashion herself a bow, utilizing her high spiritual power to form arrows made purely of reiryoku. Maddy, unfortunately, was not so lucky and would frequently cling to Ciel at every opportunity. Things took their ultimate turn for the worst as, during their teen years, Ciel would witness their foster father take things a step too far and attempt to rape her sister.

Unsurprisingly, an arrow ended up through the head of Ciel’s foster father and their mother soon followed as she attempted to alert those around. Knowing that there was no other option, Ciel took Maddy and fled to one of the Rukongai’s other, less violent districts. She knew their foster father had friends, friends she would find interactions with fatal. Ciel and Maddy were ready to start their new life, but Ciel would be under constant harassment due to the unnatural color of her skin and pointed ears. Though a bit brash, Ciel’s personality was far different than it is today. Maddy, her younger sister was the reason Ciel continued to live, continued to breathe. As the pair got older, they realized a steady income was not going to come to them. The two enrolled in the Shinigami Academy and though Maddy struggled Ciel herself would pass through each of the lessons with flying colors due to her unnatural prowess in the spiritual arts. Her swordsmanship needed a heavy amount of work due to so many years utilizing a bow, but soon the two found themselves as members of the Gotei 13. They were each placed into the Second Division and, over the years, would align themselves as members under different branches. Ciel found herself a member of the Executive Militia in no time, where Maddy would take up a position in the Detention Unit. (Against the protests of Ciel, which were turned down as soon as Maddy showed her determination and skill in Hakuda)

Over time, Ciel would gain a reputation for her ruthless handling of Hollow and would become known as The Frost Archer due to her powers relating around ice/the cold. Her Zanpakutou, a constant release Shikai, took the odd form of a Bow that made many people question if she truly were a Shinigami. Ciel would adopt a much colder persona as a member of the Onmitsukidou, fitting with the image of the organization. This was how she truly felt inside, after all, after everything she had been through. Still, the only thing keeping Ciel anchored down was her younger sister. As Ciel mastered her Shikai skills, as well as other varying skills Shinigami are meant to master, her kill count begin to rise not only of Hollow but of rebellious or otherwise dangerous Shinigami. During a mission where she was sent back into the Zaraki district of the Rukongai, Ciel would take out numerous “targets” that she recognized as friends of her foster father. Their deaths, known to the Onmitsukidou, were acknowledged as necessary due to their dangerous personalities and staggering spiritual power. Ciel’s initial goal, rescuing a member of the 13th Division who had been kidnapped there by a group of bandits, was achieved and she was once again given proper recognition for her actions. Though Ciel was colder and ruthless, her sister never appeared to be as intimidated as those around her. After all, she was still Maddy’s sister and she was still just as overprotective.

Things would take a turn for the worse as tragedy struck Ciel’s life. While out on a mission for the Executive Militia, Ciel came across a mighty, powerful being that she had never seen before. It wasn’t just an Arrancar, but one that had transmogrified from a Vasto Lorde Hollow class. Ciel was forced to watch as the entire unit she was with was slaughtered and, for the first time in her life, had to flee back to the Soul Society with her tail between her legs. Part of her wanted to commit seppuku but she thought better of it. The Onmitsukidou scolded her for this failure, and she slowly began to grow a hatred for the Shinigami. She thought about defecting, but she couldn’t possibly leave her sister alone. Her sister, once again, was the only thing tying her down. This would change when a prisoner with Captain level reiatsu would find themselves being watched over by Maddy and her group of prison guards in the Detention Unit. A large explosion caused Ciel and a group of Executive Militia members to rush to the scene, and what Ciel saw horrified her. The prisoner stood over her sisters’ decapitated corpse with Maddy’s head in his hand, smirking viciously. It was said that Ciel lost her sanity in that fleeting moment, before she raised her Zanpakutou and unleashed all of her skills upon the man. Her efforts, combined with the Executive Militia’s, were only able to detain the criminal. Demanding justice for the deceased, including her sister, Ciel tried to have the man executed but was shot down. It appeared he was being kept as a criminal solely so that they could study his unique powers.

Taking this as the final straw, without another word Ciel would defect from the Onmitsukidou. Of course this didn’t come easily and she had to fight her way out, slaughtering fellow Onmitsukidou members in the process. It was during her escape that she came across a man she had known during her younger years in the Second Division. His name was Jack, and he offered an invention of his up to the woman: A device that would hide her reiatsu signature. Agreeing under the condition that she would become Jack’s personal bodyguard, the two defected properly and hid away as Jack began construction on a gigai for Ciel since he only had one for himself. It was a long and grueling process that lasted many years, and frequently Ciel would be discovered by Shinigami that happened to track the two down. Of course, they were useless against Ciel’s eagle-like eyes and cut down by her Zanpakutou effortlessly. Soon Jack would finish Ciel’s gigai and make a few final modifications upon it. While it helped hide her reiatsu signature, this would be meaningless if she used any of her Zanpakutou’s abilities. Even firing a single arrow would ruin the purpose. Thanking Jack for his contribution, Ciel cut him down with two arrow shots to the head. She swore vengeance at that moment upon all Shinigami no matter who they were, and would find allies with the local Quincy who also despised the Shinigami and accepted the rogue in with open arms.

These Quincy would supply Ciel with a home, which acted more as a base of operations as she works around Naruki City, taking out any Hollow she comes across along with any unfortunate Shinigami stationed there. She is seen by the Gotei 13 as a high class Wanted criminal, and while they would prefer to capture her alive they seek her death to save younger Shinigami the horrible fate of death. Though Ciel utilizes her Zanpakutou to cleanse Hollow and thus assists the balance, she claims she does not care if the Quincy she is allied with destroy the Hollow and, even still, she will sometimes utilize her other abilities to destroy them rather than purify them with her Zanpakutou. The day Ciel lost her sister was the day she claims to have truly died, which is why if the world were to collapse it would not mean much to her. The events of Bleach up to this point have gone on without Ciel’s knowledge, the woman keeping herself as hidden away as possible while also completing her goal of eradicating all Hollow/Hollowkind and gaining vengeance upon the Shinigami in the process. At late nights, despite her cold façade, some may witness Ciel still shedding tears to this day over her lost sister and she silently prays that she may be able to see her again one day as the cycle of reincarnation kicks in. …But that is a pipe dream, considering she has no idea when or where the other woman may reincarnate. To Ciel, the only thing that matters from this point onward is vengeance.
