APPEARANCE
Coco is a rather slight woman of mixed Asian and Caucasian decent, short for her age at only just over five feet. She has fair skin, a pleasant if rather plain face, pale lavender eyes and a relatively skinny and flat build. The most noticeable thing about her is likely her hair, usually cut short and manageable but always dyed a bright teal colour. Other than her colourful hair, Coco casts a rather unassuming and unimposing figure that most people would easily miss when walking down the street.
PERSONALITY
Coco is what most people would call a total slacker. She has almost zero work ethic and though she applied for college after finishing high school, she dropped out during her first year because she skipped every class to smoke pot and play video games. Needless to say, she is a creature of idleness and indulgence and has only ever managed to hold down menial and uninspired jobs, of which she usually has to find a new one every three months or so.
Despite this, Coco is not a bad person. She might be the laziest girl on the planet but that doesn’t make her a delinquent. She actively tries to keep her head down and stay out of trouble, usually preferring to avoid confrontation if at all necessary and always presents a polite and friendly face when dealing with people she doesn’t know so as to avoid their potential wrath.
Around people closer to her, however, Coco is just far from polite. She is unladylike, foul-mouthed and constantly complaining despite her otherwise agreeable nature. People who can’t stand her level of sloth and whinging aren’t likely to make a friend out of her, but some folk find her cheerful if abrasive personality quite endearing. Anyone who needs a friend who knows how to just slow down and enjoy life as it is would find no better company than Coco.
HISTORY
Kohana Ota was born to a single mother as the result of an unexpected but none-the-less welcomed pregnancy. Her mother was fairly well to do for a single woman meaning Kohana didn’t live in poverty during her early life and never really experienced the worst of what life had to offer. As she grew up and went to school, other children gave her to nickname ‘Coco’ which she initially found annoying and ironic (as she has a life-long dislike of chocolate) but it stuck regardless.
As she grew older it became plainly obvious that Kohana was, by all accounts, average. Her grades were underwhelming and she seemed to have no ambition to do anything except play video games and watch TV. That was except for, of course, her ability to see ghosts. It was something that appeared to her so gradually that she thought it was normal. She never mentioned it and the first few times she did it became quickly clear that her gifts were not at all normal.
Rather than insist on her abilities, Coco did what was natural to her and just avoided talking about it. Without people to think she was going crazy and hallucinating it was much easier to maintain a normal and uninterrupted life of leisure. After all, the ghosts seemed to just be doing their own thing and never interrupted her otherwise boring life.
High school came and went and at the urging of her mother Coco applied for college, though this only opened the door to new forms of time-wasting. On campus, Coco discovered marijuana. In her first semester she became so enamoured with the substance that it virtually took over her life where she’d wake up in the morning, take a huge bong hit and spend the day playing video games with her friends and eating takeaway pizzas. This less-than-academic attitude naturally didn’t take her far and she dropped out before the semester finished.
These days she doesn’t smoke as often, but has managed to have a stable enough life moving from low-level service jobs that she can afford living in a rented apartment in the city, away from the suburbs. It’s naturally the worst possible apartment possible with towers of old pizza boxes rising from a floor covered in dirty laundry but it’s her home and she’s happy to live there.
Perhaps the only thing to make her life worse was if monsters were real or something, am I right?
