Gage wakes in a white room, electronics beeping all around him with several buzzing men in lab coats all gesturing at him. Two of them have a pair of bolt cutters and are working at his arms, seeming like they were looking for the best angle to hack his limbs off. Stirring in his bed he feels the soft leather of arm straps holding him down. "no...no...No...Whats going on? What are you doing?" Gage struggled to sit up and get a look around but all he could see was the mass of bandages on his chest where 'Greed' had gotten a hold of him, pulling some red mask from his chest.
It all happened but for some reason it was all blurry, his vision swimming with the struggle of moving. "Gage. Gage you need to calm down." Gage felt a soft hand lay on his shoulder, the voice belonging to his friend Elan. She was his voice of reason and if she trusted anyone here he would trust her to know the truth. "Elan," Gages voice cracked from dryness. "Water, please." It was all he could do to whisper hoarsely, his whole body aching from the hollow attack along with the massive dehydration that he was feeling.
Elan reaches out with a small paper cup and pours its contents into his mouth slowly so that he does not choke on the water going in his body. "You have been asleep for days now Gage. I was worried that you were not going to wake up." Gage struggles again, his arms still bound by the straps. "Why am I strapped down?" Elan waves over one of the attendants and has him undo the bindings.
"Well after you first passed out we had you on the operating table but after a few minuets you...attack someone, that lance gun thing on your left hand ended up maiming one of the assistants. It was rather...gruesome. I think he will make it but he is not going to be walking with that hip for a while." Elan looked away not wanting to look Gage in the face, either she was embarrassed or she was trying to spare him the shame of knowing that he hurt someone.
Gage though he did feel bad was not overly worried about the man, if he was truly hurt and this company thought that he needed someone to fix him up they would do that. If the company does not find that the man needs their attention Gage would see to it himself that he was back up in running condition. Sitting up Gage looks at his arms where the bolt cutters were, it finally dawning on him what they were trying to do. His armor was still covering his body, the core of his chest bandaged up but still bleeding. "Alright, if you guys will unstrap me I can get this thing off me."
Elan starts with the straps on his arm while an attendant gets a couple of the straps holding his legs the thick leather so tight that he did not know that his feet had fallen asleep. "Gah! Oh my god!" Elan jumps back, fear in her face as she thinks that someone has hurt him but that was not the problem at hand. Gage's left foot had fallen asleep to the point that when they cut the strap loose his foot suddenly seemed to fill with needles so much so that he started to flail his leg, trying to get the blood back into it.
"Crap, no, I'm fine. Who ever tied this thing down made it too tight, my foots asleep," Gage struggled to sit up, fighting the pain in his chest and abdomen from the snake bite. Grabbing a small handle on his shoulder he pulls on it and twists it like a dial, the armor plating all seeming to fall away from his body like scales off a dragon. "There, is that better?" Gage looks around at the room as one of the nurses shoots him a dirty look. He knew what it was for and in all reality he did not mind, if the man that got hurt was really in danger certainly Elan would have told him.
"Yes, now lay back. The doctors have a lot of tests to do. You have had a lot happen and we need to make sure that your alright." Gages spirits fell. He was avoiding the thought but he knew that he wasn't fine, the pain in his chest masking the feeling of the void inside. It was like he was alone in the world, his connection with his inner strength being severed and sealed. "No, I think I am okay. I just want to take some time off and rest. I have some work to get done back at my place and if I don't see to it no one is going to."
Standing up Gage shrugs off the gown so that he is standing in his boxers with the wrappings around his chest still bloody and moist. One of the nearby doctors steps forward,"I can't let you do that. You are still severally injured and I have a great deal more tests to run." Snapping at two armed guards at the door they step forward, one reaching to his belt and grabbing the handle of his taser but not drawing it out. The first one, grabbing his shoulder does not even have a chance to blink before Gage has his hand bent backwards, the man falling to his knees. Looking at the second guard Gage locks eyes with him. "If you want a broken hand like your buddy here lets do this but if you are going to bitch out on me then get out of my way."
Gage was normally not this aggressive but he wanted nothing more than to get out of here and relax in his own little apartment on his own little bed with no men sneaking around poking and prodding at him trying to figure out 'why' or 'how'. Besides he knew that if his chest was still bandaged up then they did not know that his chest was already healed up. About a year ago he found that if he was severely injured, not just a little hurt like a sprained ankle but something serious like a lion just found a steak in your chest, his body would naturally kick into a weird hyper healing mode. It numbed pain and most importantly it healed him at supernatural speeds that were capable of challenging reality.
"No, if he is refusing care there is nothing we can do. Miss Elan, is there anything that you can do to talk him into staying? Anything at all?" Gage normally would have started loosing his temper but this somehow did not enrage him as he would normally have gotten. "Don't talk about me like I am not here. There's nothing anyone can do to keep me here without knocking me out. I am going home and your going to move," Gage grabs his pants and slips into them, throwing his shirt on. Flipping his hand at the armor plating all over the bed that he was just laying in he uses Soul Communication to 'pull' the armor into a small ball and walks out with the metal under his arm like it was a basketball.
One guard goes to step into his way but Elan from behind speaks up. "I think he was serious about leaving. Just let him go. No one else needs to get tied up in all this, enough people have had a rough day," Elan sits in a nearby chair and puts one hand into her face and rubs her eyes from the exhaustion.
Gage stops at the door,"Elan, if your free tomorrow I might be feeling better by then so feel free to give me a call. I just need...I just need some time to get some things straight." Elan had no idea what was wrong with him, only that by getting attacked by that beast he had a mask of some kind ripped from his body and that he experienced a near death event. She didn't know what pain he felt as the mask was ripped from his body, something otherworldly painful as he had a portion of his soul removed. Worse even he had his Fullbring sealed.
He could feel it, that void of power where it once stood, backing his decisions with both its strength and anger. How could he have known that the focus that he had chosen to be his Fullbring 'item or theme' was really a mask inside his body. Gage closed his eyes for a moment as he walked down the hallway, a flashback making him relive the exact moment where he felt his Fullbring hooked by the fangs of the Hollow and then pulled out like a dead organ.
What had happened after that was confusing, the world being more blurry from both his blood loss and the poison of the hollow. Gage recalled the beast being over his limp body, gorging itself on his torso before ripping a mask free of his chest. Then the explosion. There was several explosions, one after the other repeatedly until at one point the beasts weight was no longer on him. One eye opening enough to see he remembers Charilus. It was Charilus right? That feeble old buisness man that had hired him for this particular job. It had to be him. No one else he knew of had that long grey hair in a braided ponytail.
Charilus was upon the hollow, a curved sword in hand wielded with speed and dexterity beyond his years. Hacking at the midsection of the hollow he was atop it, pinning its head down with his foot before he ended the vision with a deft sweep of his blade, lopping off the head of the Hollow that fancied itself to be the embodiment of 'Greed'.
Before Gage had realized it he was standing in the light of the sun, its warmth toasting his back. He had walked clean out of the hospitals emergency area and through the check out station to the parking lot. Looking around he realized that he was in the middle of Karakura towns emergency clinic district. How did Elan get him all the way home in such a short time before he...then Gage remembered. Charilus wasn't with them at the Hollows den. Charilus' only way to get to him in such a short amount of time would have been to either teleport or to create some kind of gate that would allow him a similar effect.
They must have simply taken him back the way that Charilus had come. Gage's trip home was short after he flagged the nearest taxi, the whole trip being one long nap for him. It was nearly a twenty minuet ride but Gage was too tired and distracted to care about the costs. Pulling up to his lot Gage leans forward,"Hey, I don't have my wallet but if you stay here for two seconds I have cash inside the house." The driver, an older squat man with a balding head looks over his shoulder at him with a bit of disapproval, obviously because he did not believe that Gage was going to pay up.
"Yeah thats fine," What else was the man going to do? Not give him a ride next time if he ever happened to see him again? No, he would wait for the money but be disgruntled while he does it. Gage was quick about it, unlocking both the sliding gate and the front door with soul communication as he took the stairs up to his room two at a time. Pulling a fifty from his dresser he heads back down stairs and hands it to the cabbie with instructions to keep the change. It was a little odd as Gage generally liked to hold onto his money but this man was nice enough to wait so he at least deserved a tip.
Locking both the gate and the front door again Gage turns his AC back on and heads to his room. He was exhausted and he wanted to comfort of his own space, a couch to lay on and a TV to fill the void in his head now that it was buzzing with questions about his future as a Non Fullbringer.
How would his life develop? He had no Fullbring anymore. It was as if he had no backup force anymore. Before if he ever found himself in a pinch he was always able to pull himself out of the fire by using his Fullbring, closing what ever gap in power that he felt. He never used it in excess, only when he was pushed to the limits of his own strength and had more that he needed to do but lacked the power. It was an overwhelming feeling of helplessness that he hated, his least favorite thing in the world, or at least it was, was to have to depend on someone else for something whether or not that something was really important or not.
Sitting there on his bed for what felt like five minuets Gage looks up and see's the moon outside his window, the soft white light illuminating his room. "Oh wow," Standing up he heads to the door switching the light on to the room so that he can see again. Looking around everything is the same in his room, the organized mess scattered around the floor and desk, his tools and parts to things that he is making being on the top of the pile. One thing though does not belong. A single cardboard box half the size of a shoe box sits on top of his desk, tied shut with a piece of twine and topped with a folded white sheet of paper.
Walking over Gage picks up the letter wondering who was sneaking into his room while he was gone and what they were leaving behind for him.
Gage Mekhanik, I am sorry about what happened with you. I understand what the implications of the Mask of Wrath being pulled out of you means. I only managed to show up just as the mask was being removed but I did manage to see your fullbring ripping away and entering the mask so its reasonable to suspect that your Fullbring Item was unconsciously the Mask that was sealed inside your body. If that is the case then your Fullbring is gone and there is no getting it back, the powers linked to the mask in your body. However there is something important that you need to know.
After you went unconscious and ended up on the bed in the hospital I stayed with you for several hours testing and prodding at your 'reiatsu' before I found an interesting fact. Your still a Fullbringer, your soul still capable of producing Soul Communication so that being the case means that you are able to reforge your bond with another item. All you have to do it find another focus, one that is more personal than the mask and devote yourself to it.
I understand that this item and the bond that you are going to need are going to be difficult to forge all at once so in the box I have placed two vials. The first vial in blue is filled with residual energy that I was able to gather from the Hollows nest where your Fullbring was removed. Its the liquefied form of what is left of your fullbring release. The second vial is a Vial of Soul Capacitance. Its the liquid form of Soul Communication which when poured on an item powers up its soul so that develops 'unique' properties based both on its origins and its bond with its owner. When the time comes where you must reforge your bond with an item drink the blue vial. The bond you forge with an item will be stronger if the soul of the item is strong, the Soul Capacitance will infuse any item with enough spiritual energy to become the quality of item that you want to bond with your fullbring but keep in mind that this is a one time use, the Soul Capacitance being a rare fluid and the blue vial being created from your own fullbring before it was taken. There will be no retries or do overs so this is my apology for your loss and my attempt to fix it so I will not be speaking of this again with you.
I expect to see you at the office a two days time. -Charilus
I suppose that was his attempt at being a nice guy Gage folds up the paper and opens the box, looking over two three inch tall vials of fluid, one looking like it was liquid mercury and the other like blue coolaid but shining like a glowstick. Taking out the vials he holds them in his hands, maybe something good could come of this after all. His week was rough but if it was true that his fullbring was based on the corupted mask of the madman that he was hunting then there couldn't be too much wrong with getting rid of that mask.
On top of that there was another important matter at hand. Where did the mask come from? Gage knew that the mask was a tool created by the death of the Fullbringer, a byproduct of the sealing of his soul into several peices but beyond that the legend goes that the masks were spread across the world. How did the mask end up with him? His Fullbring item bond was being formed long before he came to Karakura town, his life as a fullbringer starting long before he even knew what a Fullbringer was. Gage thinks back to his fight with 'Terra', a female hollow that had told him that he was born of a hollows energy, his mothers strength keeping him alive long enough to have been born and meet his father.
If he was truely born as a fullbringer then the mask had to be in him when he was born, some how stashed in his body at birth. Unless that is, he was not born with the mask. What if he was really born like a normal fullbring but the mask was hidden after birth, hidden by someone that he had no idea what they were doing. Gage thought back to his childhood where he may have vauge memories of getting either attacked or even being unconcious around someone he didn't know. That was to no avail however. His entire childhood he was never knocked out or attacked by anyone out of the ordenary, even with an accident like that one time he was in a car wreck. His father however was sevearly injured, Gage only being eight was nearly knocked out from the impact but his father managed to get him out of the car before anything really bad happened.
Gage fell unconcious in his fathers arms only to wake in the recovery room while his father was in the ICU. That was really the only time that he was 'unconcious' enough to have something that drastic happen to him and have it not wake him. If there was a stranger that managed to sneak into the hospital that day then it would explain how he might have missed that big of a tramatic event, his injures exhausting him enough to keep him unconcious. Maybe he would be able to find some tapes for those days in the hospital as long as they didn't destroy them or delete them for non use. It would be somewhere to start at least.
Two days pass and Gage begins to settle, his dissapointment with the lossof his fullbring finally settling into a mild sense of discontent. If he was to ever move on he needed to focus on something more important, something bigger than this or himself. Gage cleans himself up and gets dressed, his outfit plain so he blends in a little more than usual. A plain white 'T' and a pair of jeans with his first invention, the Break Blade that he made. A sword that holds liquid metal in the hollow portion of the cross guard, capable of extending out to the length of a longsword. Clipping the 'x' to his belt he heads to his garage and looks out over his collection of bikes. Due to all his work for the 'company' he was able to buy out all the slips on the bikes, them all his personal property now.
He just couldn't find the motivation to reopen the shop, the loss of his Fullbring making him solem and quiet. Climbing on one of the bikes he turns over the engine, the rumble of the four cuylinder engine under him making him feel a little bit better. Hitting the button on his key FOB the garage opens, rattling to a stop at the top. Edging the bike out Gage stops and hits the button again, locking the garage and rolls out the street.
Letting up on the brakes he starts down the street at a managable pace, keeping with the traffic in town, slightly weaving back and forth behind a taxi that was driving a little slower while he was looking for customers. Leaning into the throttle Gage feels the engine compensate with more power, his mind focusing on the road ahead, his worries turning into just making sure that he does not clip one of the cars that he is passing at an extra fifteen miles an hour. By the time he passes a cop in town he is going over twentry five miles an hour faster than the general traffic, ridding the lines in between the lanes like they were his own personal travel lane. Gage only manages to catch a glimps of light from over his shoulder before he grins and really lays into the throttle the front wheel kipping up a bit and making the bike burn out ever so slightly while traveling at fifty miles an hour.
It only takes Gage about a minuet and a half to lose the cop in traffic, the light lanes that he is taking making the car have to constantly brake and speed up when it can find a way through. As soon as Gage finds a lonely road he takes it, slowing down to a crawl so that he can put on his Hunters Mark, a pair of dogtags with the symbol of the fullbringer on them. The necklace absorbs his reiatsu and funnels it into a small capacitor where it is released in a similar fasion to the hollow 'Terror' technique, normal humans activly ignoring him and subconciously choosing to not see him or his energy. It was his own personal way of going 'invisible' while in town.
Heading towards Naruki City Gage pushes the bike to its limits, only feeling the stress of his loss fade when something serious could be happening like when he rounded a bend and almost plowed into the back of a semi. Weaving out of the way he pushes himself to the limit, his body capable of resisting most fatal crashes but even he, at these speeds would end up a stain on the highway spread out over several hundred feet.
Nearly thirty minuets later Gage finds himself outside of Naruki Manor, impressed with himself for setting a new time trial for the trip, having shaved over fifteen minuets off the run. Walking up the front step Gage reaches for the door just as it swings open, Elan standing there smiling back at him. "Hi," she seemed more than happy to see him, her yellow sun dress fluttering in the wind as it snuck its way in the front door. It seemed that she had forgiven him for his less than nice behavior
"Hey Elan. Sorry it took me so long to get here," Gage felt horrible, it suddenly dawned on him that he had run from the hospital like a hurt dog before vanishing for literally two days without a word to anyone.
"No, its alright. I know you had some stuff you wanted to take care of," she obviously had spoken with her grandfather about how he had lost his fullbring, there was no way that he could explain it to her but he felt worse that he had vanished than he did that his fullbring was gone. Letting him in they small talk as she leads him to the library, the middle of it being the training center where he learned how to use Reiyoku Techniques as a form of 'Spell'. Leading him past the training circle she takes a right in the back of the library, its magically extended 'dimension' being larger than the house was. Sitting in the far back corner of the room was Charilus, leaning over a desk with two ceramic masks, one that is of a golden mad mans grin and the other a polished oni mask of anger.
Gage's stomach turned over, there it was, the focus of his Fullbring that had pulled him out of the fire so many times before. "Is that him? Is that my mask?" Charilus turns to Gage, taking off a small pair of specticals.
"Gage, welcome back. Its good to see you up and about. You got my package I presume?" It wasn't hard to see that Charilus was changing the topic, shifting himself slightly to hid the mask from view. Why would he do that? Gage had been the protector of the mask for years, far longer than Charilus even knew about its wear abouts.
"Charilus, is that my Mask?" Gage's voice was getting panicky, the stress in it starting to show as his voice began to crack. He didn't even know it but he was slowly walking forward, getting closer and closer to Charilus.
"Now Gage, calm down. We don't know what kind of effect the mask has had on you yet. There is a great deal more testing that we need to do before you should even be near-" Charilus couldn't even finish his sentence before Gage lunged for the mask, Charilus having to step in front of him again. "Gage get control of yourself! This is the mask controlling you! This isn't you!"Charilus throws him back, strength that some one of his build shouldn't have.
"Get out of my way Charilus!" Gage see's red, his vision no longer registers the things that is doing. Charging in again he ducks this time, trying to go under Charilus' arm but the old man was not just strong. With a swift kick to the shoulder Charilus snatches Gages ear and pulls him upright by just the ear. "Gah!!! Charilus that hurts!" Charilus grins and throws him backwards, before turning around and sweeping the mask into a magical seal covered box. Snapping the lid shut he looks at Gage.
Calming down the blood starts to flow out of Gages face, his head starting to normalize. "Well Gage, it does seem that the mask has some effects on you. The only other time I have see you act like this was when I saw you activate your fullbring before K'vothe helped you seal away your demonic anger. It has to be coming from the mask and I cant help but feel like if I give it back your going to lose yourself in its power."
Gage rubs his ear, the skin feeling like it was burning from being picked up by it. "I uh...I supose your right." Gage's face started to flush, embaressed for his bad reaction to the mask. All he could think about was the hollow that he had fought that thought it was greed. If his own mask was the mask of anger then it had to be the mask itself that did this. It was turning him into a mad beast, ruled by rage and anger. "I think it would be a good idea to keep the mask away from me for a while."
Charilus puts a hand on Gage's shoulder,"Its quite alright Gage, if the mask itself did that then there is nothing to blame you for. All we can do is be grateful that you have kept such good care of the mask until now," patting Gage on the shoulder he leads both Gage and Elan to the door away from the masks. "On to more important things. I have gotten word from a close freind that there is someone who might know where the next mask is. As of right now we have the mask of greed and wrath. We had the mask of lust but it was lost. That leaves us with four masks left to find. This is the next clue that we have. Or at least is a clue that might lead to a lead. Let me ask you, have you ever been to Soul Society?"
Gage was staring at the book shelves all around him when Charilus popped the question. "Soul Society, the Shinigami world right? Thats the one that you are talking about?" Gage knew of Soul Society, the world being filled to brim with sword weilding soldiers all trained in their own art of war, however unique that may have been.
"Yes, the world of the dead. I have a connection in Soul Society that claims he has found one of the descendants of one of the guardians of one of the masks. We need to get to Soul Society and look into the rumor to see if he really is one of the descendants and if he knows anything about the location for the mask. My connection will be waiting for you in the town when you get there so keep an eye out for him. Elan has already been walked through all this so when ever you find yourself ready to go let me know and I can get you there. Just be careful and keep your head down. Outsiders are not generally liked in Soul Society so if you find yourself in trouble don't hesitate to get out of dodge." Charilus was kinder, at least a bit more personable than he was before the whole ordeal with the hollow of Greed.
Handing Gage an envelope he pats him on the shoulder. "Is there anything that you need to get?" there were a few things that he wanted to get, the first of which being his armor but if this was just a run to Soul Society he figured that it would most likely be outright obvious that he was an outsider if he showed up wearing human world gear and clothing.
"I cant think of anything that I want to get but I am mildly sure that we should change before we go," Charilus nods and waves towards the man now approaching them from the front.
"Here we have some regular Shinigami robes. They will get you in and about without any issue so you should be fine with that. If your caught by another Shinigami I am told that they for the most part are able to tell when you are not a member of their organization just by being near you so when they ask, and I am sure that they will, just tell them you are a new member of the academy and that you are going around looking for extra credit."
Gage nods, taking the robes from the elderly butler and looks them over. For the most part they seemed like they would fit, a second set laying under his own. "Whats this one for?" The butler clears his throat,"Ahem, that would be for the miss'us." Gage looks at Elan then back down at the outfit. He had a hard time sizing her from here but maybe they would be able to pull this off, the most difficult part of this whole thing being that they would have to pass as students at the Soul Society.
