Omar sits in the cab next to Gage, both of them silent the entire ride to Naruki. His mind was a storm, filled with thoughts of how he was going to tell Charilus about the men that had attacked him and more importantly how he was going to tell his employer that he had lost the mask. He had never failed a job before, coming close on more than one occasion but never out right coming short on his objectives. There were times that he doubted the ability that he had to finish the mission but he always walked away, one time getting carried out on a stretcher but still finishing the objective. This would be his first time ever having to be reprimanded for failure, the fear of failure being more than he has ever had to experience.
Pulling up to the front of their destination Gage was surprised to find out that he was not going to his regular destination of the run down bar, the lights of the massive casino shining in through the tinted windows of the cab. Above the entrance of the casino a massive green dragon curls its way around the entrance with its open mouth aimed at anyone that walks through the doorway. The building itself is tens of stories tall, the top of the building having three spotlights darting around the sky like beams. If it were not for the fact that he was here on a failed job he would have actually been impressed with the display, the bustling streets and traffic jammed roads all being something that he is not used to in Karakura town. It was time, the door opening to the cab as a man lets him out of the vehicle exposing him to the noise of the world outside.
Gage steps out, standing upright in the light of the building, several shadows of his body being cast in all directions from the lights above. Behind him Omar steps out, leading him by the shoulder and giving him advice as he guides him into the casino. "He is going to be mad, furious even but don't let that deter you. He has gone for a long time with out these masks and after his anger fades he will calm down and we will figure out our next step. Charilus is not a bad guy, he has a bit of a short temper but he is reasonable. He knows that if you were ambushed then it would not have mattered how strong you were. This is not your fault and he will realize that but until he calms down make sure not to interrupt him."
"Yeah," sure don't interupt his boss, the one that happens to command his own little army of supernatural people. "I will watch my mouth. I hope your right. I got the shit kicked out of me for that thing, if I can't at least find out what for then I am going to be a little annoyed." Gage starts on his way in, Omar guiding him through the front and past the guards. Moving past the front bar and through a pair of large wooden double doors with a dragon carved into it they enter a hallway that seems to go on forever, wider than necessary and at least two floors tall. The humm of the street and the casino behind him echoes down the hall, coming to a dead stop when the doors are closed. It was all sound proofed, sealing him away from the real world. Even if he wanted there would be no one out there that could hear him scream, his death likely to be found only by ants as his remains would be scattered over five states. Was this company really like that though? Do they kill the failures? Certainly not, how else would they get anyone that was decent without killing them while they are inexperienced.
Gage finds himself after a long walk in front of a decorative ornately carved wooden door. Out of instinct he had long ago started using his soul communication to get an idea of what was around him but this door was amazing. Just the wood itself was hundreds of years old, having gone through many lifetimes of owners from person to person as a tribute to the times long past. Omar moves forward and opens the door, letting Gage enter first. The room itself was lavish decorated with what had to be hundreds of thousands of dollars. All about the walls are relics, swords and spears from all corners of the world. Even the carpet was rare, one throw rug near a book shelf being what looked like a White Siberian Tiger.
This man was obviously a collector of some kind, gathering things that he felt would be worth any amount of money big enough to catch his eye. Looking up from a desk full of paperwork Charilus stands, his face turning red the instant that he spots Gage. "YOU! HOW DARE YOU SHOW YOUR FACE!? DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE COST ME?!!!" Slamming his pen down and storming around his desk he starts walking towards Gage sill yelling. "I have been making these plans for years! That mask was more important than your measly life and due to your INCOMPETENCE I have lost it! I should have known better than to let Omar talk me into letting you hold onto that mask! You very well have started a scheme that would lead to the end of everything! If it were not directly illigal to the company I would cut you to peices and throw you out onto the streets to drain!!!" Gage's eyes went wide. He knew that he was in trouble but he was not expecting this. This man was not furious. He felt a righteous anger from the loss of an item that could have done more than Gage could have contributed to the world in a hundred lifetimes.
"I am sorry sir, I was attacked in my bed. There was nothing I could have-" Gage is cut off by another stream of curse words and insults, all aimed at his incompetence and his inability to perform up to the standards of the company. At first Gage was embarrassed but as the insults went on he felt a tinge of anger starting to well up. What was he supposed to do? Die trying to keep that mask and then still lose it because he was dead? No, he would let them have the mask this time but he would make them cough it up in blood during their next meeting. Charilus takes a breath, a young woman's hand touching his shoulder and calming him down almost instantly.
Stepping out from behind her grand father she speaks, apparently having come from no where as she was not in the room when he entered, or at least not that he could see. "Please Grandfather, stay calm. It is not good for your health and if you heard right from Omar then there is no way that he would have been able to hold onto the mask. Especially if there was a group of them. He has been through enough already this morning and the fact that he has still come in proves that he is committed to getting this at least straightened out. Mumbling to himself Charilus agrees and shakes his slightly in disappointment.
"I supposed your right Elan. We were so close though...it was right there. I could have reached out and taken it yesterday." Charilus flops into his seat and puts his head into his hands obviously lost in the past and in the loss of the mask. Elan walks forward and reaches out a welcoming handshake to Gage waving Omar off.
"I am Elan, this is my Grandfather here. I heard from Omar that your morning has been less than ideal," less than ideal is not how he would have explained it but it was still close. "Perhaps we may have a moment to discuss the significance of what has happened and we can see if you would like to remain involved in this."
Gage remained quiet but nods his approval, happy that there is someone that is willing to fill him in on the situation. Elan, wearing a long yellow dress is pleased to see that he would hear her out and she literally takes him by the arm and leads him out the door. Taking a right she starts walking and speaking. "Several hundred years ago there was a group of nothing but Fullbringers, all commited to the collecting knowledge and power so that they may influence the world in what ever way that they deemed fit. For the most part these soul all thought that the world should be monitored and protected from the shadows but not all of the group felt that was the right way to handle their powers. There was ten overall leaders in this group, a single one causing war and strife where ever he felt."
Taking him down another hallway she leads him up a set of stairs and continues speaking. "This mans name was Tho'x [Though'ks]. One day some how Tho'x found a way to kill one of the other members, absorbing their soul and becoming too powerful for the other members to reign back in. This boost in strength was actually due to some dark ability to tap into his Inner hollow and cross the border between a hollow and a human becoming more dead than alive. After becoming part hollow the other members took matters into their own hands, draining away the powers that he held and containing them in themselves. This killed all the leaders, sealing the fragments of Tho'x soul into seven masks that were dispersed all around the world. This was not easy however. To seal the fragments of his soul into the masks they were required to weaken him first and then strip him of his hollow powers. In the end each of the leaders were absorbed into the masks also, their soul in a constant war with Tho'xes own fragmented soul to keep it bound."
"With Tho'xes dying words he claimed that the masks did not work, several apprentices in the area hearing that came to believe that perhaps Tho'x was indeed not contained in the masks. After failing to destroy the mask with any means known to them at the time they sealed the masks away far below the base of their central chamber. Tho'x however was sealed in these masks, fragmented but still there. Using his surplus spiritual energy he traveled out and convinced the minds of many members of the group that there was strife and destruction at hand and they all fell, the place turning into ruins and no one was left to guard the masks." Elan walks Gage behind a massive one way mirror that looks over the entire casino floor so that they could see the entire floor at once.
"The final act of the last member of the guard was to disperse the masks all over the world into hiding. Once all hidden he died, their locations hidden to everyone in the world except for what was left in a few of his notes and a few records of his sightings. Now my Grand father has been working on getting these masks together before a group of Hollows manage to get a hold of them. These masks are indestructible when apart and the least dangerous in that form but when they are brought together they can be combined into a single mask that is stronger than the others but is then able to be destroyed." Elan continues walking, passing down a thinner hallway where men walk by pushing massive mail carts filled with chips and stacks of cash. Gage couldn't help but stare at the mass of money that he was seeing. The situation was serious but even in this day and age you have to stop and admire the flowers this time the flowers being a wad of cash that would make bill gate drool.
"If you don't mind me asking what was it like? Having the mask I mean? Did the mask push you at all? Try to force you to do anything unusual?" Gage was a little surprised at the question but shrugged it off. If the mask really was all that she was saying it was then the mask would most definitely have some kind of psychological effect on the possessor. He could not think of anything weird however, the mask seemed to be...just there. He did poke it with his soul communication one time but it seemed like there was a brick wall there. A brick wall and a laughing voice, not laughing for any particular reason but still laughing.
"Well in all honesty I don't remember it doing anything to me that was out of the ordinary, at one point I could feel the mask laughing when I tested it with soul communication but aside from that there was nothing else." Elan stopped what ever he said obviously phasing her for a moment. Regaining her composure she continues, their route taking them back towards the office where Charilus was. Nodding that she had heard she leads him in and walks over to Charilus, leaning in and kissing her grandfather on the cheek and whispering something in the ear.
A look of concern passes over his face as he thinks on the situation,"...Gage, I understand that you were attacked and that there was little hope for you to have been able to do anything since Phantasm was there. That being the case since Omar has put so much trust in you and because my grand daughter seems to think that you can be of some use I would like to offer you a place on my team. If you would be willing to work recovery we will be pulling your hunter license and be giving you an officer position in the company where you will have access to the company resources and funds but in return you will work for me to get the masks together so that we can put an end to this nightmare."
Gage was surprised by the sudden change in the situation. He was the cause for the loss of the first mask and now he was getting an offer to get a promotion, more money, resources and men. Was this really happening? This all seemed a bit out of the ordinary but if he questioned it what would happen? Would Charilus remove the offer from the table? He had to take it while he still had to chance, on top of that take the opportunity to find those bastards that had put him through the wringer. "I will take you up on that. I don't care what I have to do, if it means finding these guys then count me in. When I bring back their heads on spikes and we toast those masks I will consider what to do next."
"Right well Gage, Elan will get you all set up with what you need for the company but there are going to be a few things that your going to have to go over with her and get straightened out. Primarily on how to deal with Phantasm and your inability to combat his ability." Elan steps back around the table and gestures to the door.
"You and I are going to head back to the family Manor. We have some things there that can get you to where you need to be. As far as the uniform we will work on that when get there, you look like a medium regular, I think we have a few extra in storage for you." Pulling out her phone she places a call while walking with him to the front of the casino, guiding him to a limousine that is out front to meet them. The entire time she is on the phone she is giving yes and no questions to someone about getting Gage his promotion, apparently having to have a long discussion about it at a later time.
