The sky appeared partially cloudy without any sign of rain, the small boy who was the newest member of the kido corps wished to impress the leader of the division. In order to do this the boy known as Aoi Sora, who was young by shinigami standards had already passed top of his class in kido. People had actually had high hopes of him joining the black ops since he showed some talent for step methods. Sadly the boy lacked the skills in hand to hand combat that were an important in the black ops, however the boy had his exceptional talents for kido so he was now going to train something higher then what he was allowed to master in the academy.
He took a deep breath and began the incantation as he held out the palm of his right hand. "Ye Lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and pandemonium, The sea barrier surges, March on to the south!"
As the orb was forming he said the name of the technique, "Hadō #31 Shakkahō" as a small red ball of fire shot from his hand with great power before swerving off course and setting a small tree on fire as he fell back on the floor. The boy's hand was shaking as he turned it around seeing a light burn on his right hand from the flame. He sighed as the tree was on fire he took a deep breath before stepping to the tree and cutting the burning section before kicking it into the air as hard as he could and then aimed the palm of his right hand a second time and began the incantation again concentrating.
As the air around the boy moved around him as he focused more as he repeated the technique again while it was slightly off course it managed to hit the tree breaking it apart and without a source of fuel the flames disappeared as they fell back down. He had failed his first attempt and his second attempt was not much better. The problem was not the incantation it was the boy's accuracy. He needed to practice it further as he decided it might be safer to aim at the sky. The boy decided to take a short break though since he did not want to just go crazy with his hand still a bit sore from earlier he needed it to heal up a bit
More than an hour had passed since his training began, as the young and inexperienced Aoi had just used the technique twice. He was not about to let just two failed attempts hinder his training as he aimed the palm of his hand at the sky as he smiled and began the chant once more.
"Ye Lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and pandemonium, The sea barrier surges, March on to the south!"
A small red fire ball went high up into the sky as he smiled looking at it, then as it reached up really high he noticed something he did not realise previously. The reason the flames of the previous fire ball had stopped before was because the two fireballs had collided indirectly cancelling each other out. His output was also lacking as the ball had not really gone that far to begin with having a range of close to thirty meters was where it should have reached but it only went up around fifteen meters which was not high and as all would know. What goes up must come down, which with the small space between the boy and his ball of fire could his life be coming to an end. To be defeated by his own technique, was this the destiny of the newest addition to the kido corps. Will this be his last day of training or will this be the moment to define the rest of his life, what should he do in this moment as the red flame was heading towards him.
"reflect"
He did not have time to think this over as he knew he had to defend himself as he released his blade in that moment, the release of Kagami as it reflected a portion of the technique as he blocked it taking light burns on his arms and upper thighs and slight burns on hi forehead. The boy realised he was a bit careless and sat up before sighing.
As the boy carefully stood up and placed his sword in the ground as he looked up to the clouds and took another deep breathe and began to face the palm of his hand up to the sky again. He decided not to hold back this time as he performed the incantation for the forth, fifth and eventually after the twentieth time having made small dents in the ground around him. With miniature craters shown from him not putting the correct amount of reiatsu into each of his shots. He was getting the hang of it as only around ten landed on the ground and roughly two had hit him again which he managed to block more carefully having his sword nearby. He was finally ready to try again as he aimed for the nearest tree and took a huge breath of fresh air.
"Ye Lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Inferno and pandemonium, The sea barrier surges, March on to the south!"
He released a small fireball from the palm of his hand as it shot forth and broke the tree which also lit up as well, the wood burning as he decided he was finally ready to perform the technique for use in battle in the future. However this technique was just a warm up for the true technique that he wished to learn as he decided to sit down and recover meditating near his blade which began speaking to him.
"Hey, what was that? I thought you were suppose to be a genius, I can not believe you are my partner"
He did not really care what his zanpakuto thought of his training, but it was annoying to have his zanpakuto insult him. On the other hand if he reacted to that he would lose and being as stubborn as he was he ignored it. The zanpakuto felt bad about it, but refused to admit an apology out of its own stubborn nature. This did not hide the fact that Aoi felt the same way about himself, he felt he performed rather pathetically for a spell that was only in the third tier of spells, had he used a real spell how bad would the results be.
The small boy screamed out to let out his intense frustration as his zanpakatu was sweating from the over reaction, but some what understanding of the frustration of a genius failing. He then did a few stretches as he took an even deeper breathe before taking his stance and speaking to his zanpakuto.
"Kagami, watch this"
He smiled for his zanpakuto, something he would not ever do so easily in front of others as he aimed out the palms of his hands. An excited look in his eyes as the boy began the incantation
"Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!"
The reiatsu was not moving the same as before, this spell was one he wished to learn far more then the previous spell he learnt. The flames began forming, however it was not a small red fireball, but a brilliant blue flame as he ended his incantation and cast the technique
"Hadō #33 Sōkatsui"
A large explosion occurred as Aoi flew back rolling a bit as an image of himself got burnt in flames before disappearing as he looked up to the sky as he was laying on his back. He can not believe what happened as both his hands were now burnt as his technique activated a bit late. He was fortunate that he was able to avoid any serious injury and the attack was the same tier even though there was such a gap between the two techniques. It made the small boy wonder if there was no way to improve the previous technique and what would he need to do to master the larger technique Sokatsui.
The boy began to run around placing targets in random locations as he made his way around the training area back and forth. He really wanted to impress the captain of the kido corps as he ran back and forth. He was not sure whether he would be able to master the techniques in time, but he knew that he wanted to make a good impression on her. He took a deep breath as Kagami began to laugh on the inside at all the drama and intensity over a simple training exercise.
He took a deep breath and began running, he had gotten to the point of not using incantations however whether he had the concentration to master the technique after the training was over would be hard to tell. He was about to begin when he yawned a bit as the sun came down. He collapsed and fell asleep in the training grounds as his shikai simply left an aura around him for a while. The training area was fortunately a safer area then other places and some shinigami who came for night time training simply took him over to a nice soft spot and placed him there to rest. They decided to avoid using the small boy's target practice and simply guided other shinigami to other places. This was probably just luck since he should have known not to stay up all day training. However he soon would begin his training in order to master his new technique he thought of, as well as the completion of his next technique that would decide whether he would be truly worthy of being called a genius.
It was at that time he began to dream as he looked to himself in the mirror.
"Kagami, when did I fall asleep?"
As he knew better then to confuse being awake and sleeping.
As the boy stood in the world of dreams as a hall of mirrors and rain drops fell as the sky reflected the lake and the lake reflected the sky. The world began to rip apart in two equal halves as the sky began to fall as he looked at himself looking at him. "Kagami, I will beat you" as the image of himself smiled and replied. "Aoi-kun, will you really be able to defeat me?".
The small opened his eyes to find a soft silk blanket covering him and a small sealed bowl of noodles which seemed to still be hot as he looked around, but no one was in his training area as he heard sounds of swords clashing and on other ends heard explosions of kido as well. He then looked at his targets which were close to twenty in total as he prepared himself. He raised his right hand and then placed his left hand in position like a master of the arts. He then proceeded to rip off the seal with his left hand and then grabbed a spork which was a combination of a fork and a spoon and began to devour the noodles showing no mercy as he gulped them down without mercy before giving a happy sigh, however the smile he showed earlier was already gone and so was most of his excitement too. He was rather calm right now as he stood up and took in a deep breath.
"Thank you whoever you are"
Who ever it was that left him the bowl of noodles it did not matter, however it would have been nice to know who it was. He then got ready, he was now able to focus with his mind rested and his stomach full there was nothing in the way of his training as he got into his stance and thought about why this training was important.
He prepared himself as each day he would practice firing close to twenty or more Shakkahō a day, as he repeated the incantation and soon began cutting out the incantation as the technique would fizzle out or fail several times. He also performed only one Sōkatsui a day alongside this training. After a few weeks had passed he had finally gotten the hang of the fireball technique however he did not yet master the zero incantation for Sōkatsui. He had trained a lot and did not really spend time with any other shinigami, he also felt a bit upset that he was not selected for the usual duties the other shinigami got. He was not sure if it was cause of his inexperience or that the kido corps simply mastered kido. It did not matter as long as he would be able to impress her though, he did have other problems to deal with as well. He was not sure what was so difficult about Sōkatsui when both techniques were considered equal, even though the second one was clearly more powerful in a sense that it was faster and covered a wider area. Perhaps there was a weakness to Sōkatsui that he did not know about, it was hard for him to tell at this stage but he knew he had to train to make better use of it.
As time grew short he prepared to take on his final test, even if it was a bit early
He began to dash through the fields as he remembered the days in the academy, everyday that he worked so hard and became hailed as a genius. Every single night he burnt his fingertips casting a simple kido technique everyday, the number of times he repeated the chants over and over again. He passed his first target on the left of him aiming his right hand directly at it and casting.
"Hadō #31 Shakkahō!!!"
The fire ball blasted from his hand blowing up the target as he got pushed back slightly to the right, his next target was closer but the problem was that his timing might be a bit off as he turned his right hand to the other side of him as he sidestepped to the left. Releasing another fire ball to hit the target on his right as it grazed the outer layer but due to the explosive nature of his technique it took out the whole target. He then had to use the chant for the next two targets which were further away and above him spread out in a circular shape there were six targets. Would he be able to get all of them within the radius as he faced both of his arms out towards the target.
"Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!"
As he struggled to maintain his aim as he got too tense he finally released it. "Hadō #33 Sōkatsui!!!"
A large blue flame scattered into the air and hit five of the six targets, but the sudden push back made him lose his footing as he fell forward he braced himself landing on his forearms, then tumbling and in an attempt to continue he pushed himself up off the ground and gave a look in his eyes. A look of stubborn determination.
The boy flying through the air as his right foot landed first he was still being carried by the momentum as he did a twirl spin using his right leg as a pivot before landing his left foot and dashing to regain his stability as the next targets were right before him as he aimed the right palm of his hand at his target again. He wanted to do the impossible as he attempted a double chant for the first.
"Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone,Ye Lord! Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Inferno and pandemonium, The sea barrier surges, March on to the south, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws!"
The strain was intense as he attempted the impossible, as he wanted to prove his worth more then anyone else right at this very moment.
He aimed forth his right palm first and shot the fireball "Hadō #31 Shakkahō" As the target got blown away he wished to finish the next two targets in spectacular fashion as he felt a pain surge through him as he flung his left arm forward and completed the second technique. "Hadō #33 Sōkatsui!"
He had done something he should not have done as his zanpakuto cried out to him from the darkest reaches of his mind as all the remaining targets were covered in flames as the small boy flew through the air as a result of the explosion. His left arm was charred slightly with his arm flailing a bit as if his arm had been dislocated from his shoulder. His left hand with severe burn marks as he landed on his back. The explosion probably sent confusion to some as the sound of the other shinigami training seemed to stop, was this really going to be worth it.
The small boy was annoyed at himself as he had been told to be careful with his training as he was currently moving around in a wheel chair, the severe after effects of the explosion hitting the boy even harder then he thought at first. It was at this time that he felt the need to train even harder.
He finally returned to the training grounds area as he watched the entired area he had trained in was scorched as he noticed a small portion of the trees nearby seemed to have been burnt down. He realised the reason he was told to rest was not to protect himself, but in fear of danger he would bring to those around him as he gritted his teeth he gave a cold serious look.
"Kagami, we have to do it"
As his zanpakuto replied, "Aoi-kun, you are not prepared"
He wanted to lash out, but the boy simply looked at the ground as tears began to flow from his eyes. "I know, but I can not give up now. If I stop now I may never get up again, I can get beaten as many times as it takes. The moment I give in to defeat, I give up being me."
The zanpakuto then spoke to him, "This might be a good idea, however I will need you to release me so I can protect you just in case things happen outside of the training."
"I thought you did not like me" as the zanpakuto simply smiled and said, "I was thinking the same thing"
It was at this time that he would return to the world of mirrors, the land of lakes and the sea of skies. He would return to his second home, the home that no one knew. It was the one home where he could simply be himself, who ever that was.
As the wind blew through the waters like the breath of a sleeping dragon. They stood face to face as he aimed the palm of his hand towards his opponent. His opponent smiled and drew forth its blade as the two watched eachother. These two boys gave the impression that they could be twins, but this was not the case.
Aoi, the small blonde haired shinigami with the blue eyes was skilled in the art of kido and had some rather exceptional stepping skills. While Kagami, the small blonde haired zanpakuto spirit with the same blue eyes was more skilled in the art of using a zanpakuto being one himself. They were standing there knowing each other far too well as they prepared for this destined duel.
"Hado" as he spoke the enemy used shunpo to close the gap between them ready to slash apart his soul, however he used the same technique to get around to the back of his opponent as he finished his chant. "Hadō #15 Ichiren Byakurai" The blast of lightning was really fast, but so was the mirror image defense as the boy quickly backed away understanding that he would lose track of his opponent if he did not back away and prepare his next attack.
Kagami was grinning as he prepared a technique that he had not shown before as he let out a wave of condensed reiatsu towards the unsuspecting Aoi. He was a bit in shock as he used his shunpo again to dodge, but was met with his opponent closing in on him with a slash he countered with his defensive kido.
"Bakudo #14 Hibiku"
As a force of lightning repelled his attacker the small boy understood that he was really close to facing defeat that time. This was not their first battle and he remembered how the first two trials he endured against his zanpakuto were far easier then this. Was the zanpakuto holding back all this time, or was there some other reason why the previous fights were easier. However though they were easier he did fail them several times ending up with scratches, cuts and sometimes heavy bruises as well. Though the most difficult part of this test was not being able to use his zanpakuto skills. It was clearly Kido vs Zanpakuto.
The small boy was starting to sweat a bit as his heart began to race, he decided he needed to make a big impression or at the very least force the hand of his zanpakuto with a disadvantage brought on by the number of times he evaded, there would only be one chance for him to win this and it was a matter of timing the right moment for victory. He took another deep breathe as his zanpakuto took his stance and prepared for a dash, the battle began again as they both charged towards each other and then Aoi cast his technique.
Another blast of chain lightning as if the first one was not a clear sign of things to come, but the predictability of the move just led to his zanpakuto deflecting it with his blade and continuing his charge as he came close both of them began the fight. Aoi used his step method of shunpo to evade the bladed strike, while his zanpakuto used shunpo then to relocate to behind his partner. Knowing that this would happened he produced and aoe like lightning defense which clashed head on with another attack that just left a large rift in the ripples of water as the battle began to heat up.
The next part of this battle would be different as this was the moment when the zanpakuto dashed for him again, this window was merely to force his hand. He could not defend any further and right now as it stood they both had issues with their limits as he realised the situation he used shunpo to dodge the attack, however the zanpakuto followed him with shunpo as well. He was on the ropes and they would soon run out of moments like these. Another shunpo followed by another they each knew the difference would kick in. While Aoi was definitely superior in Kido he did not have the advantage in step methods and it was this that would lead to the final moment of truth as he performed his fifth shunpo knowing he had no more chances left to find a weakness.
The moment had come as his zanpakuto appeared behind him as usual ready to strike, but just as Aoi's moves were predictable, Kagami was just as predictable. The look on Kagami's face as he witnessed what had happened as he placed the palm of his hand with a smile on his partner's body.
"Hadō #11 Tsuzuri Raiden"
As electricity flowed through his zanpakuto it also flowed through the foolish boy, who even though he was a genius had no way to beat his zanpakuto at this stage. The moment was rather intense as his zanpakuto endured the blow before looking down at Aoi who was getting that look in his eyes as if this was not over. The genius zanpakuto did not understand the reason for the simultaneous hit when it was clear that something simpler would have been a lot easier. It was only at that time he finally understood why he used that technique to weaken both of them. Having the advantage made Kagami drop his guard as the rather remarkable idea set forth by Aoi was begun.
"Bakudo #8 Seki" As his zanpakuto got knocked back having carelessly forgotten about the gap between the defences of Aoi, as he then prepared taking aim as his zanpakuto was paralyzed. However he fell down from the sky as his zanpakatu smiled at the idea of losing the fight in order to win. This was a principle that only they could understand, facing defeat and facing death were never the same. Some believed the ultimate defeat is death, but sometimes the ultimate defeat is simply giving up on life. He knew that he would not be killed by his zanpakuto, but his zanpakuto also knew that this was a test of skill not a test to kill.
The boy collapsed in his chair as he fell asleep as one of the nurses found him sleeping in his chair and took him back to the hospital again.
