On an early and rainy evening Thursday in Karakura, Theocelese visited the place he once called home. After the fiasco with Tyrannus leveling a good chunk of the town, and after losing the last of his blood in the aftermath, Theocelese felt himself adrift for a short duration. Headaches and migraines plagued his mind, causing painful facial spasms and a decline into maddening bloodlust. These crackled in his skull like the drumming thunder, and spread like cancerous veins as the lightning did in the sky. That is, until an old friend came to visit. Hidane spoke subtle truths, and whispered hope into the Arrancar's ear. This act soothed his mind, and instilled a sense of purpose that did not involve permanently devolving into a mindless adrenaline addict, Hell-bent on butchering anyone and anything that had the misfortune of crossing his path. It happened from time to time, and many Hollow fell to his uncontrolled rage. Had the Vizard not made an abrupt appearance and interrupted his breakfast, there was a high possibility Theocelese would be here not incognito, nor with the intention to keep to himself in a quiet and peaceful manner.
He was visiting the city's graveyard, and currently stood before the three lots dedicated to his wife, his daughter, and himself. Fresh bundles of flowers of all kinds were set on either side of the middle grave, his personal plot of land where his body would rot inside the coffin of his daughter's choosing. He was here to pay respects to his wife and child, as well as to reflect upon what the future would hold for not only himself, but Las Noches and the second founding of The Alliance. It was his last attempt at regaining control of his sanity, to expunge his mind from the dark thoughts and so far, it was working. He hadn't felt the painful thrumming in his skull in several days, days he spent locked inside a bundling of parchment with pencil in hand. Everything that needed to be repaired, fixed or replaced was cataloged and written down. All materials for this reformation were also jotted down, though this was more of a mass estimated guess than anything else. Theocelese was not only committed to this path for his own betterment or standard of living, but for others. His family would not have wished for him to become the very thing he always stood against. Theocelese would see to it his goals were completed, and all plans came to fruition for them. In their memory, in their honor.
Yet on this day of reflection, Theocelese could not find peace in the storm that seemed endlessly hang over Karakura. He'd come to the human realm in the Shigai Seran provided for him. The Shigai, Seran explained, was like a Hollow's version of the Shinigami Gigai and in conjunction with some confounded technological clothing worn upon it, he could completely and utterly be disguised as a human. His appearance was completely different, as was the age. He would look older than well...what he actually looked like by a few years. Theocelese found a human spirit of an older man who died of cardiac arrest with a Hollow hot on the old man's trail, and with his newly reforged blade, didn't quite end the beast's life. It was sprawled out across the fencing of the graveyard, too damaged to move but undamaged enough to where it could not get away. The spirit of the elder human stood with Theocelese in the rain, and spoke to the Arrancar of his life. It was something to pass the time until a Shinigami arrived, to which Theocelese promised to not leave the old soul until it was his time to move on.
Mihri lead her flash step with her right foot, lifting off the roof of a small house into another step. Lightning snapped in the far distance, for a moment illuminating the dim rain soaked evening. Crackles and crashes of thunder followed, vibrating in Mihri's ears when the lightning struck close. Mihri held the Communicator before her as the rainy world rushed by, half watching the red dots on screen, half watching her steps. The device had once again beeped on the final day of Mihri's patrol in Karakura, duty calling just once more. Tomorrow on the dawn, she would return to the Soul Society with time to spend at home. The full month posting had been a long one, grueling but not lacking in adventure. She had met Toshi, the gallant young human with the immense Reiatsu, his spirits Kanaboshi and Kasei. Mihri had learned much about him and about human powers. However, since their awkward parting two weeks ago she had not seen him nor felt a whisper of his Reiatsu. She knew he would be safe, all that mattered to her now was surviving the night to see home tomorrow.
Whatever fear she might have had was quickly washed away as she approached the first red dot on the screen. Mihri's eyes could easily see the hollow from a distance. A ten foot tall humanoid with a mask like a sheep. The fence that blocked a graveyard ran parallel to a sidewalk and a narrow one-way street, across from an apartment building She could see the Hollow impaled on the spiked metal bars through its rib-cage, screaming as it tried to push itself free, its efforts quickly defeated by immense pain. The street had a fresh crack or two, large splashes of blood already began to discolor to a sickly brown. Mihri descended into the street, a dozen meters from the hollow. The beast turned and screamed at her, frantically attempting an escape to no avail. After a moment the beast ceased its struggle, it seemed to slouch and became silent. The hollow turned and locked its gaze with Mihri. It only watched as the Shinigami approached with a drawn sword.
Mihri stood an arms length from the hollow. She reached her hand out and touched the Hollow's mask. The texture of the mask was soft and smooth, firm like bone. The hollow did not seem to notice the touch, or did not care, only fixated its gaze further.
"Go in peace," Mihri said to the hollow, just before she took her longsword in both hands and cleaved the hollow's head in two.
There was one more red dot to deal with. This one, Mihri was not nearly as scared of. She walked leisurely through the graveyard along a walkway of cobbled stone. Lines upon lines of graves stood in remembrance among lush green grass and flowers, marking the resting places of the dead for the next three city blocks. Near the centre of the yard, stood a large wooden canopy that shielded two individuals from the rain. One had a grey metal chain hanging from a pedestal on his chest. Mihri's eyes could see from this distance that the chain had only five links remaining. Mihri shrugged her sword off her back, holding it in her hand by the sheathe as she walked along the path toward the red dot.
Mihri approached silently. Upon reaching the cover of the canopy the Shinigami regarded the old soul and bowed low in a gesture of civility and respect. She rose after a moments pause, "My name is Mihri Ikeda. I am a Shinigami, a spirit of death, duty bound to guide you to rest in the afterlife. Fear not, the process is painless. Have you any requests before I guide you on?" She said, turning to the 'human' and nodding.
Theocelese paid little mind to the Shinigami as she came and performed her expected duties. Truth be told, he was planning on taking the Hollow back to Hueco Mundo to the Adjuchas Terra. Her hunger was growing more ferociously as the days went by. She told him this, and he believed her. The Arrancar had been there once before too, and for whatever reason that the gods willed, his hunger could never be quelled. The thought was troubling, having seen what the fate of any Adjuchas could be through the devolution of the woman to who he shared a life with. Terra's spirit was as wild as a stallion, but no matter how strong one's will was, she would always be at risk if she stayed in the state she lived in now. Regardless of how things were turning out, Theocelese supposed he would find another of his kind to bring the Adjuchas. So long as the spirit, now having stopped his long winded tale of the life of a factory worker due to the Shinigami's entrance, was safe then Theocelese was satisfied.
"I'm aware of who and what you are," The old man started with a smile. "He," The spirit paused again, gesturing to the other man who remained with his back to the spirit, and the Shinigami. "Told me you would come and that you would bring me peace. I have no requests, please continue." The soul bowed in both respect and thanks, awaiting the inevitable Konso to follow.
For just a few moments after the spirit left the human world to travel to the Soul Society, Theocelese stayed his words. So many times in the past this scenario played out with varied endings. Sometimes a Shinigami would appear, just as this one did. Other times they would either arrive just in time, or a moment too late. Unfortunately, he also bore witness to no Shinigami coming to complete the ritual now recently performed. It hurt him to see the agony of another person forced to undergo their rebirth as a monster. For once, he was happy to see a Shinigami.
"I'm surprised you arrived as quickly as you did. Thank you for sending him on a better path." Theocelese said with his back still turned. Unlike before, the man kept the palm of his left hand rested on the pommel of his sword. This was all he expected to say to the servant of the Gotei 13, perhaps he would share a few more words and while he was ready to, he was also ready if things escalated. Theocelese did not count on such a thing to happen, and would have preferred an elongated interaction to result in words, and words alone.
”As you wish.” Mihri approached the soul and tapped his forehead with the tip of Mokin’s pommel. The soul became surrounded by a circle of shimmering blue light. On his forehead Mokin had branded him with an odd kanji rune that briefly shined brighter than anything else, even the lightning that broke across the distant sky was dim in comparison. The shape of his body faded to a mist-like blur, until he had vanished entirely and the light subsided. The Human, who had so far said not a word, had turned away as Mihri spoke to the soul, gave a queer thanks. Mihri surmised that the Human had set the hollow up for her, protected the soul from being consumed. This marks the second strange Human Mihri had met during this posting. He was tall, with long brown hair and a sword at his side.
”Needn't thank me. I am only doing my job.” She said as she strapped the longsword to her back. “Thank you for keeping him company. I take it that hollow did not come to be impaled on that fence accidentally. So, thank you for that as well, and for not exercising the beast yourself. Waiting for a Shinigami was the right thing to do.”
His reiatsu was locked down, but Mihri could tell he concealed great power. How much, she could not know. His appearance, his weapon and garments were odd for a Human. How he had made efficient work of the hollow and seemed to leave it for Mihri showed he possessed a capable knowledge of the spiritual world. Unlike Toshi, he very much knew what he was doing. He had done everything right, but Mihri still carried some suspicion. He certainly was not a Quincy, however when meeting any human with spiritual powers there are procedures to follow. Broadly, the first step was to establish their strength before establishing the legality of their powers. Usually one would guide them to kill a hollow. One's soul communicator would report a destroyed soul, then the shinigami would report the Human's powers to their superiors. The Onmitsukido would then watch them or in some extreme cases assassinate them. A shinigami's job involves far more than just cleansing hollows and guiding souls.
If this human was as knowledgeable as Mihri presumed, and given his so far optimal conduct, it was possible she could simply ask him if his powers were legal. She decided it was best to begin with pleasantries, "If you hadn't been here... that fellow would have been supper no matter how quickly I had moved. You saved a soul from a gruesome fate. May I have the honor of knowing the good samaritan's name?"
"I did for the old man as I would for any, nothing more, and nothing less." For the time being, Theocelese kept his back to the Shinigami. His palmed grip on his blade's pommel remained in place just the same. This was perhaps the very first time a Shinigami actually thanked him for the act of saving a soul, but part of him doubted such gratitude would be shown if he hadn't been masking his true presence. Still, it felt quite nice to have one of the Gotei act in such a manner. It had also been some time since he had such pleasantries with another being that wasn't either a Hollow or Arrancar. His hand left the pommel of his sword and met the opposing appendage as they crossed past one another over his chest. Slowly, the hidden Arrancar turned. The look upon his human face was one of complete neutrality. There was no sign of the pain he felt internally, nor was there any look of joy cresting the emotionless gaze. His eyes, however, were a completely different story. It didn't take a genius to realize that he was sizing up Mihri, analyzing her just as she was just doing with him. Her Zanpakutou peaked some interest. He'd barely seen many Shinigami carry their blades on their backs, much less seen one with a different type of blade than a standard katana.
"You may address me as Okto," The name was pronounced with a long 'o', a heavily accented 'k' and 't', and the last 'o', again pronounced with a final elongation. Maybe in time, if he was reveal himself, the name would make sense. "I would rather the spirit of a fragile old man go to somewhere that is safer than Hueco Mundo. I've seen men, women, and animals turn into beasts. He deserved better than that."
Theocelese's arms unfurled, and his right hand extended to shake. "To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with now, soldier of the Gotei?"
The Human explained his actions as being neutral, indiscriminate, but none the less a gesture Mihri could only respect him for. Regardless, he had saved Mihri from another fight, tired and bruised as she was, even a weak hollow would have been a challenge to best. The Human turned to face Mihri. Seeing his face now, he looked to be middle aged. His face was long and handsome, framed by long brown hair. He showed not a hint of emotion or concern as his eyes seemed to scan Mihri. He was… very handsome. He seemed to look her over, sizing what he perhaps thought a potential threat, or simply a curiosity. He named himself as Okto, mentioned Hueco Mundo and the fate that had awaited the old man come the final encroachment. Okto extended his hand to shake, addressing Mihri as a soldier of the Gotei. That label made her feel an odd pride.
“Mihri Ikeda, of the Sixth Squad.” She shook his hand firmly. “You’re not the first spiritually powered Human I’ve met recently. This city is unnaturally active. You can feel it, can’t you? The Reishi is thick here. Almost as thick as the Soul Society. It draws people like you here. Pluses wander here seeking a need for Reishi. Hollows are drawn in equal measure. This city becomes a death trap for a lonely soul.”
Mihri wondered how many Humans like Okto there truly were. Toshi and now this one, on top of that orange haired one, a few pardoned deserters, and Gods only knew who else. Mihri wondered what could happen if these people banded together. If made their own organized faction, what they would accomplish. A few captain-class humans might one day contest the Gotei. At the very least regionally. The last time that political games had been played in the name of who might maintain the balance, a genocide followed. Legal powers or no, Mihri would be remiss as to not report having met two powerful humans in one assignment.
"You seem rather knowledgeable. I wonder who taught you of Souls and Hueco Mundo? Where would a human even learn to use their Reiryoku?" She asked from a simple curiosity.
"I know there are many humans who hold great potential," Theocelese began, keeping his handshake grip held for just one extra second before retracting his hand. "I have met many, I have fought alongside many, and taught many more. All, coincidentally, I met within this city. It is a spiritual beacon that lead many to either greatness, or death." There was a look of contemplative nature now on the man's face, and internally he was wagering what the exact outcome would be if what felt like an extended interaction became even more so. He gave the slightest shrug, then crossed his arms over his chest. "What you ask are questions that will be answered and then followed by more questions. Please, Miss Ikeda, walk with me. Talk with me. If you are in possession of a Gigai, I know of a small shop that caters to insomniacs. We may speak more there, if you wish." Theocelese then left the small covering from the rain, raising a hand as he did so. Whether or not he was manipulating the Reishi around him, or he was augmenting the direction of the rain was up to Mihri's speculation. However, the crystalline blue hue coming from his blade may have directed her to the culprit, and that guess would have been correct. The being perceived to be human was under no danger of soaking under the fall of the storm's fury.
"To begin answering your questions, it was a mixture of what you would say as 'both sides', as well as my own personal experiences. When I was of a younger age, a Shinigami happened across me and at the time, I suffered from...a great rage, and for whatever reason she said my Reiatsu felt like that of a Hollow, and questioned me as you do now," Theocelese raised a hand and with a smile, paused in his steps. "Have no worries, I've grown more calm in my age and such an affliction pesters me no more." After but a few moments, Theocelese, or Okto, as he pronounced himself as, began walking again. "We fought, but as daylight broke the late night sky, we traded one last wound. After that, she taught me about the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo and helped me learn to control my..."talents".
Not long after, I met one of your former Captains in one of the parks. Tousen, I believe his name was, and at the time I was growing ever stronger, faster than most humans seemed to, he said to me. At this time, I believe he, Gin, and Aizen took to Hueco Mundo and were at war with the Gotei. He convinced me their side was the one in the right, prompted me to grow stronger, and aid them when the time came. Having never met a power so great, I was obliged to do so...
And then I came into contact with a Adjuchas class Hollow by the name of Beastia. Despite being a monster, he was more intelligent than most give his kind credit for. It is odd, but we became friends, and we shared knowledge. He told me of the infinite white desert, and what a Hollow's life was. He too, mentored me, even after he became a Vasto Lorde, he still came to visit me. There was once I held a...meeting of sorts, with Beastia and one of your Lieutenants, Kira..I...I don't recall his full name. Blond, always looks sullen. Third division, I think it was. Yes, it was Third at the time, as he grew...restless when I mentioned my meeting Tousen. He brought up his Captain, Gin, but I never met the man." From the cemetery, his physical body's resting place, Theocelese turned his back to and left. A stoplight came into view, and the few cars being driven on the weekday passed. It was not yet time to cross the street.
"You may opine correctly in where my teachings came from. Some from the Gotei, some from Hueco Mundo, and outside these influences, I grew on my own. Years later, here we are, another member from the fabled 13 poking into the mind of someone outside their realm."
The being perceived to be Okto began by speaking of the many humans he has personally seen. How he has fought and trained with them, meeting them coincidentally in this city as Mihri had. His expression became a thoughtful one. The Human crossed his arms and shrugged, bidding Mihri to equip a Gigai and follow him to a cafe. If she followed him to a cafe, had a cup of a tea and biscuit, in that time a hollow may appear. She could then test his powers if her questioning did not yield answers. Okto seemed pleasant enough company, Mihri thought. She followed him when he turned and walked from the canopy. His hand raised, and Mihri's eyes could see a current of Reishi flowing around his body, seeming to push the rain aside. The Human's Reiatsu seemed to slightly flicker. Okto was correct. Her questions were already opening more.
Mihri summoned her Gigai by tapping a big blue button on the Communicator. A body hopped off a nearby rooftop and ran toward the pair. The Gigai bowed, spitting out a small green pill before falling into a limp heap. Mihri suited up. The Gigai wore a teal blue hooded sweatshirt, the scroll and Katana clutching falcon of House Ikeda stitched to the breast. Tightly fitting jeans and a pair of silver coloured high top sneakers rounded off the outfit. Mihri flipped up the hood and made an off-hand comment about Gigai being terribly cramped before continuing on her way with 'Okto.'
Okto continued to speak, and Mihri listened intently. Mihri's lord father had many times told her that a valuable trait in a ruler is simply to listen. Lord Iwan's words proved their value now. He first spoke of a great rage and strange hollow-like reiatsu in his younger days, meeting and fighting a Shinigami. This Shinigami taught him how to fight properly and control his powers. His story seemed to make sense, a brash boy different from everyone else is set in his place by an experienced master who guides him onto an honorable path. Near to being described as storybook. His fable seemed to take a hard left when he mentioned the high traitor Kaname Tousen. He had been on their side during the conflict with Aizen and the Arrancar. He had cohorted with those who were, to Mihri, villains and high traitors. His so mentioned 'meeting' with Lieutenant Kira only confused her further. Something that felt like a knot tied in her stomach. Mihri kept her hands in her pockets, the soul communicator tightly gripped. This one was not like Toshi, he wasn't nearly as dim. 'Okto' was cool and calculating, measured. He had been summing up Mihri's every step since she had come within range of his senses. Fascination was beginning to be merge with suspicion in Mihri's mind.
They stopped at a street crossing just beyond the gate of the graveyard. The evening had set into grey night, the storm beginning to subside into a subtle shower even as thunder rocked in the distance. The dim glow of street lights, red and yellow and green, reflected in the long pools of water that clustered the street and mud soiled sidewalk. Mihri stood for a short pause in the rain when Okto finished his story, as numerous cars rushed by spraying mist as they went.
Mihri began to wonder how wise it may have been to don her Gigai. "How far outside, I wonder?" Lightning cracked in the distance, the flash did not make Mihri blink. "You're not a normal Human, nor a typical case for any other powerful humans. I have a sharp set of eyes, they can't help but see the holes in your story. Tell me, who, and what are you exactly? I suppose I should have asked directly."
{Spoiler}hey! sorry for taking so long with this. stressful times.
i hope she's not deducing too much here. i thought that theo mentioning his 'great rage' and joining tosen would set off some alarm bells for Mihri. she does not suspect he's an arrancar yet but she definitely thinks there's something off about 'okto' also i always imagined mihri's voice as liara t'soni (the angry blue alien lady in white)
The signal to cross the street flickered a few times, counting down from twenty, to one. The red icon of a figure walking shifted downwards to the panel underneath, transforming into a fluorescent green. With the Shinigami in her gigai, and their destination not too far off, a conversation could be better had between the two. Theocelese's chest swelled with a whirling combination of intrigue and caution. Having some form of companionship was proving to be a nice thing to have, but he knew to be wary, and knew even better to keep his words lined thick in sweet lies and half-truths. He spoke as he could, revealing what was relevant and surprisingly, he did so in a truthful manner. He hadn't mentioned his death, of course. Perhaps later, he would unveil his true self from this disguise and a continuation of pure truth could be spoken. Though Theocelese doubted this, he did know Shinigami on an individual level could be rational and level-headed. Mihri was proving she was already of that sort, but her loyalties to the Gotei was strong. Admirable.
"You are correct, Miss Ikeda. I am not a normal human being," He began as he crossed the street, making sure every stride taken was not too quick, but never too slow. Okto walked with the grace of an ancient general as he walked side by side with Mihri, his form perfect and each fell of his feet were silent against the slickened pavement. "I am a man who has seen and experienced much. In the power I have, the power you feel, I've lost much to obtain it." He said, and with a yet another gesture of his hand did the rain that pelted against her Gigai's form left in small conglomerates, and then no water would afflict her spiritual shell at all. "Everything I have told you is truth as I see you fit to know, but if you feel I must oblige, I will tell you what I have left out.
The Hollow took my wife from me, they left my daughter motherless and myself, a widower. That is why I tossed my lot in this Eternal War. I fought, I trained, and I killed many to find those who wounded me in such a grave manner. I pledged some semblance of loyalty to your Traitors to receive aid in this manner, but the Vasto Lorde I spoke of, Beastia, he talked me out of siding with Aizen by helping me instead. He disappeared before this could be done, and I resumed the search alone.
As for exactly who I am, a loyal friend, a comrade, a brother, or father to those I knew. I was a hero to this town, a champion and defender of this city. To others, I am a murderer, a traitor, I am the nightmare the mother tells her children will come if they do not resign themselves to sleep. All of this is true, but it is the past and I will keep it there where it belongs." Theocelese continued to speak as they walked, and after two right turns, the duo arrived at the small cafe. The neon-light sign stated the shop was, in fact open, but there were only a few customers inside who were either glued to their phones or unable to be bothered from their laptops. In a fashion expected as a man who looked, talked, and walked with a high caliber in accordance to his character, Okto opened the door and waited for Mihri to enter first and choose where they would sit. A waiter saw them, and began readying the nightly menu.
"I've kept under your radars because I do not stay here frequently anymore, and everything I have told you about myself was when I wasn't important to the Gotei. Now, I stay in my home country. I fight for no one anymore, except myself. I am through with war and the pain it brings."
DW about it, I'm not going to lie it kills me to wait for threads I'm into but you have your RL that comes first. I'm also an impatient prick, too. Mihri is right in suspicion, I'm kinda trying to have him leave bread crumbs here and there until he tells the truth. I think we should have a Hollow come into play soon, maybe after they've talked for a bit over some tea. Also: neat VA.
They crossed the street when the light turned from green to red, the symbols changing to signal their crossing. Mihri walked at Okto’s side, keeping her hands in her pockets and never letting go of the Communicator; her finger hovering over the button which if pressed would call reinforcements. She too was cautious, as her mind began to piece together a theory. Okto continued, explaining the loss of his wife to a hollow, his pain, anger and quest for revenge. This quest had proven difficult, and, in desperation Okto had turned to associating with unsavory individuals. The burning desire for vengeance is a strong one, she knew as well as he did. He had taken desperate actions to get what his heart yearned for. She could understand that. She could rest easy despite this. His story still seemed far too… redeeming.
Mihri began to surmise that ‘Okto’ was not a Human at all. At least, not anymore. It seemed most likely that he was a Vizard deserter. His 'anger', his previously hollow-like Reiatsu, working for Tosen. It all fit. A Shinigami is capable of gaining hollow-like powers, some willingly, some not. Regardless, most Vizard were cast out of the Gotei, their powers being illegal unless specifically sanctioned. This was the only logical explanation Mihri was able to deduce from his story. She found it unlikely that Sosuke Aizen would recruit a Human. His Reiatsu felt light, pure, like any powerful Human his presence felt un-corrupted. Unless that changed at some point, there was naught Mihri could do. ‘Okto’ had backed her into a corner where he was safe by the grace of law, and Mihri could do nothing. She continued to listen, nodding and giving the odd verbal cue to indicate attentiveness, but held her tongue for now.
Mihri’s gait was light, carrying her weight on the balls of her feet; seeming to push off her rear foot with every step. A bell rang as Okto opened the door for her. Mihri did not smile, bid him thanks, or even look at him. She wandered until she found a booth table in a dark, abandoned corner. The table was a slab of varnished wood, flanked by high leather benches. A single dull lamp hung daintily above the table. She sat and flipped her hood down in time for a waitress to lay menus on the table. Mihri and Okto exchanged pleasantries with the kind serving girl, Mihri placed an order for a cup of orange pekoe tea and a slice of raspberry cheese cake.
Mihri stared at him until the waitress was out of earshot. Her eyes flushed with energy, coursing and settling, then flowing again. One arm rested on the table, the other remained in a pocket. "I guess I know you're story now. I'm afraid mine is not as interesting. I'm just a rich girl from the Soul Society." She finally said.
"I should wonder how long you will remain a ghost to us. You likely expected this question. I find you so civil that I might just ask. Shoo the elephant, as it were. I ask without a mean to pry, but I must do my duty." The energy in her eyes settled again, the blue becoming flat, "Do your abilities in any way damage the balance of souls?" This question, though simple in nature, may reveal much. Okto's heart was calm, his breathing clear and soft.
Theocelese knew what this state the Shinigami was in. It was fear, uncertainty, and a sensation of helplessness that he knew all too well. And it pained him to know that he was the cause for such ill effects on the Shinigami. It was in the way she walked, her lack of speaking but gross silence. Had she still been on the mindset of collecting data on him, Theocelese felt there would have been a more lively response to his opening of the door. Most would have offered thanks, Mihri did not. Though this did not concern him, and he made no reply upon following the Shinigami to the corner of the room. His choice of seating would not have been surprising, either. Okto sat with his back facing the wall, a move only those who showed signs of caution at the potential of a surprise attack from the rear. This was another habit developed during his time as a mortal man.
The waitress made her rounds, and after properly greeting her and waiting for Mihri to make her order, Theocelese ordered a simple green tea with honey, a slice of strawberry shortcake, and a glass of Umeshu. The waitress finished her scrawling and promptly left the two to their own devices.
At first, Theocelese was unsure of which to address first but resigned himself to the more wise answer. "No. I possess little more than a few parlor tricks, my own physical prowess, and spirit you wouldn't believe. Hit me, knock me to the ground, and my stubborness will not allow me to stay down." He paused with a slight smile before continuing. "I know you speak in regards to the Quincy. I have never met one, but know I would consider them to be a far more dangerous enemy than any Shinigami or Hollow. These two keep the cycle in continuation, Quincy halt this cycle all together. The story I was told was that they were given the choice to cease in their methods. They did not, and the Gotei Thirteen nearly wiped them clean from existence. A fitting end, if you ask me." Theocelese relaxed against the back of his seat, letting both hands rest upon the table. This was done to further aid in easing the Shinigami. He saw the life in her eyes light up, becoming entranced in them until the fire in those blue hues smoldered. "I am not a ghost, Miss Ikeda. I am a Lion, and I've not yet allowed my roar to be heard...and as you have not heard such a thing, please, allow yourself to relax. You appear to be sitting on the knife's edge, something you need not do. If I wished to lash out at you, I would have done so at the cemetery. I've no reason to do such a thing." His gloved hands came together, fingers intertwining as he leaned forward slightly, the tips of his fingers resting just above his upper lip.
"You know, I've said much of myself, and you've said so little. If you're a rich girl, I take it you were either born or adopted into nobility. I cannot say I'm from such a creed, I grew up tending goats and olive trees, and I can say for certain I have never met any Shinigami nobility, unless..." A slip of the tongue caused by his own overly relaxed state of mind. "Nevermind," Okto's form straightened again, implying he was now as much on the knife's edge as Mihri was. He waved his hand, and smiled warmly, it was as fake as it was purely genuine. "Tell me of your house, your lineage, and I shall tell you of mine."
If Mihri were a touch more paranoid, she might have read his statement about stubbornness as a warning. He followed with an answer to her question, offering an anecdote of the Quincy war. It took a genuine effort for Mihri to hold back emotion at the mere mention of the Quincy war. Okto called the Quincy's end ‘fitting,’ a comment that made Mihri want to vomit. Mihri thought there was little that was ‘fitting’ about cutting a man’s throat in front of his wife and child before the wife and child were too butchered. Mihri knew it was best to not pull skeletons from the closet to present to this Human, so she let the comment pass no matter how much it bothered her. Okto urged Mihri to calm and perhaps he was right. She was on the knife's edge indeed, if she was right Okto being a Vizard, she had plenty reason to be. However the stalemate Okto had forced was mutual, she realized. Mihri could do nothing to him, nor could he to her, lest he blow his cover. Whatever he was truly covering, the gods only knew.
He asked about her House and lineage. The question caught Mihri somewhat off guard. Most people she knew that were not nobles were loathe to hear of House and history. The ones that listened were scholars, or were men attempting to woo Mihri with feigned interest. Mihri hoped Okto was just a scholar. The history of House Ikeda was a topic of particular interest to Mihri, so she was never unwilling to spout the story if anyone cared enough to listen. After the anointment of Ikeda Kuchiki in 829, onward through the next 1200 years, little of interest had happened in Ginnokuni save for some rather raucous palace intrigue.
The question about her house seemed to delight Mihri, "That's quite a topic you've dug up. I think you may regret it." She smiled as she took her hand from her pocket, resting both hands on her lap. "My full title is Lady Mihri of the House Ikeda, Baroness of Alcer, High Marshal of Ginnokuni, 10th heir to the House of Ikeda and its faculties. There are different types of noble house in the Soul Society, mine is a feudal house, which means we hold and rule land. Our land is the district of Ginnokuni. A province in the far north of the Soul Society, known for its natural beauty and abundance of Silver mines, hence the name. Our crest is a falcon with spread wings, clutching a scroll and a Katana." Mihri smiled, pointing to the emblem on her chest, "I hope I'm not boring you yet. Our motto is: 'By honor and Sword.' We trace our lineage into the Kuchiki clan, to whom we are vassals, a typical cadet house." That's the short version. I will spare you the tree and the daughter-of-son-of spiel. If I were human, I would be equivalent to the heiress of a medieval duchy. I live in a castle. To me its just my boring life, but to some mine may seem like a kind of fantasy world. I assure you it's rather more boring. My lord father's job is mostly bureaucracy and hearing petitions; which he judges based on a constitution and legislation from Central 46. Or he'll write his own legislation for... horse speed limit in villages... or what have. Municipal government affairs. A Lord is also chiefly responsible for the defense of his or her land. A person's strength of Reiryoku plays a huge role in the Soul Society's politics. All these responsibilities and more will become mine when my father either dies or abdicates." Mihri shrugged, "I am the legacy of a thousand year old dynasty. I am a rich girl from the Soul Society."
Where Mihri may have seen the slaughter of the Quincy as brutal, Theocelese thought it a wise decision on behalf of the Soul Society. However, this subject was not further broached and frankly, he could care not. Whatever was done in the past, was done, and there was no re-writing it for better or worse. Instead of resting on a dead topic, he grew more interested in the Shinigami's willingness to be the one speaking. Once more, the shell of his Shigai relaxed further as he returned the smile at Mihri's suggestion of him regretting bringing this up. Truth be told, he knew little about the Nobility aspect of the Soul Society and having the chance to meet someone who grew up in a noble house was rare, as far as he knew. Everything spoken to him did not fall on deaf ears; his eyes remained locked onto hers and the warmth of his smile retained its warmth and welcoming appearance. Though he was given a short rendition of her house and family, Theocelese rather enjoyed it. "Never, please continue." He added when the manner of him being bored arose. Even as their order came, he dared not break eye contact nor did he pay the drinks and sweets any mind. Fascination was written across his face, plain as day. From looking like a mannequin, aside from the blinking of his eyes, he came to life after Mihri assured him of her 'rich girl' status.
"You and I share some similarities. If I gave myself any title worth noting, it would be the Lion of Thessaly, and I do fancy the constellations, personally the Aquila and Leo. The latter should be obvious" He too pointed to his chest, moving aside the strap of his pauldron to indeed display the embroidered, golden Aquila against the black fabric. "When I spoke to you of the humans I once held council with, we spoke two sayings in, and out of combat. Courage and Honor, as well as Strength and Honor." Finally, Theocelese paid attention to his tea, lifting the mug to take a silent sip. His hands cradled the warm, ceramic vessel and he leaned against the back of his seat. "I cannot say my origins hold much interest, I was one of two sons to a farming village that borders the Aegean. Though my father did swear that my great something or another grandfather was the product of a sea nymph and a king. So there may be noble blood in me yet, but aside from the Eternal War, all I've known are...goats, olives, various fruit bearing plants and the ocean."
Theocelese, of course, was referencing himself as his 'great something or another grandfather'. He hadn't yet met another being who could deduce these slight and subtle references, though with this one...The shimmer of curiosity glowing in his golden eyes was not just aimed at this encounter with the Shinigami. Though he gave her little time to ponder this, and after taking another sip he let the mug rest on the table once more. "I know not the life of living in a kingdom, and as I am sure you have visited the land your family holds claim to, I doubt you have ever seen the coastal villages of Greece. Perhaps I can show you sometime, if you wish. You've made the Ginnokuni a place of interest to me, and as curious as I am about the delicacies of the working people, I know without asking my being there to be illegal." It was the subject he knew would throw the Shinigami off guard, and beyond the resurfaced smile held anticipation to see the reaction to his bold suggestion. Theocelese bit his tongue, willing himself to speak no further.
Okto seemed genuinely interested in her long drivel about her family and its duties. She could have gone on far longer if she had truly delved into the family line. If she had, explaining her father and late lady mother’s bloodlines and dynastic marriages, she would certainly have bored him. The blood connections from Mihri’s Mother alone would have been enough for another two paragraphs. Okto spoke of his past in Greece, as perhaps some kind of soldier, a warrior. The ‘Lion of Thesally’ he dubbed himself. He showed her a sigil under his pauldron, a golden lion with a great mane not unlike Okto’s.
After the waitress had brought their orders, and after Mihri had dug into the cheesecake, Okto had explained his early life as a simple farming peasant in Greece. These geographic references were only vaguely familiar to Mihri. She knew of Greece, knew of the sea that separated Greece and Anatolia. She hadn’t the slightest idea of what a sea nymph was, but apparently Okto had some royal blood. Humans did not have many Kings these days, at least not in that part of Europe. He had to be very old. Another point that validated Mihri's Vizard theory. She was musing on that thought as she took more bites of cheesecake and sipped her tea, then Okto continued on.
The subject did catch her off guard and it showed on her face. An eyebrow shot up, while the other furrowed. Certainly to smuggle a random ‘Human’ into the Soul Society would be highly illegal, a crime of severity near treason. Nevermind smuggling a Vizard into Ginnokuni. This is also saying nothing of the political implications should they be caught. For a misdeed like that, as the heir to her house, the Ikeda would be ruined. Her family members would be spared the headsman, but the dynasty would never regain its credibility. Going to Greece with him would be similarly foolhardy. At least, Mihri thought, Vessarian would suffer as lord. It was almost worth doing for that reason alone.
“Erm…” she stammered, taking a few sips of tea as a way to pause and think. “You’re right. Bringing Ryoka into the Rukon would see my head removed from my shoulders, and my family politically ruined. Sorry, as much as I would be delighted to have you over for tea, that would be an awful idea for all parties involved.” Mihri shrugged again, “However, upon your inevitable death and subsequent Konso, seek out the castle in the Northern 74th District. Someone with your skills - Reiatsu or no - would be a valuable addition to House Ikeda’s retinue. But not before.”
While the effects of his words took root, Okto finally partook in the slice of cake he ordered. With a napkin taken and resting on his lap, he felt free to enjoy the dessert. The moment his fingers lifted the fork, his form changed completely. Prim, proper, polite. He did not eat large cuts from the fork, but smaller pieces at a pace which allow him to enjoy the strawberries in each bite. He even went so far as to dip several pieces of the sweetened bread into his tea. By the time Mihri finished expressing her concerns of his going to the Soul Society, he was halfway done. As much as he enjoyed cake and tea, especially any sort of delicacy that involved strawberries, the man did not have a great sweet tooth. The tea, and alcoholic beverage would be more than enough at this point. Without so much as the smallest of a clinking noise of metal against ceramic, Theocelese set his fork down and gently moved his finished 'meal' off to the side. It would be a good snack to take home to either of the boys.
"I understand, Miss Ikeda. The last thing I would like to happen is for any of these troubles to come to you. This is why I invite you to the village I call home any time you wish. I'm unfamiliar of the...intricate workings of the Gotei's administratum, but if you're allowed any time off of from your duties, then such a time would be appropriate. As someone who has seen service in military, both mundane and spiritual, a little relaxation goes a long way." With his tea cooled off enough, Theocelese finally took an honest drink, rather than another quiet sip. Little flecks of pink icing made the drink that much more sweeter, and while he enjoyed it, even in this faux body, he still felt the urge to violently brush his teeth.
"In that time so long ago when I wrestled the demons who plagued this town, one of the things I did when I went back to my home country was to work with metal. With a little...convincing, I was able to bring much of my work back here. I'd like to offer you a gift for taking the time to speak with me, as it has been some time since I've been able to have a good conversation with one of the Gotei's fighters, much less nobility at that. This chance encounter, I must admit, has been pleasant. I'm unsure if we will meet again, nor if I will remember what transpired this night when my time does come. I hear many souls lose their memories when passing on."
Okto's right arm moved to his side, the man's head turning as he fished around in a pocket. The soft jingling of keys could be heard, but what he brought up was not just a few keys, it was an entire ring. A small copper key, sandwiched between two master keys, was held up. "There is a storage unit facility across town where I keep mementos of the past, and in one of the few I have bought is a training blade you might like. If not to use, then to hang on your mantle for a good story to tell others." Theocelese took a much longer drink from his tea, finishing the warming drink. While he spoke, the man did not break eye contact with the Shinigami. It seemed almost like second nature to the man, as if not maintaining this level of eye to eye connection was rude. Theocelese was looking to read any change upon the woman's face, now focused to seek out the slightest of expression and what emotion they may tell him.
For a variety of reasons, Mihri would not want to chance what might happen if she were to follow him home. There was a time, not so long ago, where Mihri would have jumped at the chance to run off for a week with some handsome thing like Okto. She felt tempted even now. He was very… handsome. There was an inherent risk that kept her pushing him away. She had little idea of what exactly he was. Even if he was just a simple powerful human - which Mihri very much doubted - she could not risk anything that might be unseemly. Mihri's life was akin to an extra long election campaign. She had to win favor from her future vassals to ensure smooth succession and capable leadership. One single scandal, one misstep, might jeopardize her future efforts.
Perhaps it was maturity that made her push him away, or simple fear, or politics. His suggestions were a lot more problematic than he knew. As was his offer to follow him to a storage facility of his, to gift her with a sword to commemorate their meeting. Another statement that struck as being rather odd. Accepting a gift from a stranger whose existence may be of questionable legality seemed a poor idea. As much as Mihri loved the look and feel of a good sword, she could not accept it. She would be unable to keep it hidden and, upon returning home, the high ups would ask questions of her souvenir. Mihri felt that too much contact and too much attachment to this ‘Human’ was dangerous. Regardless Mihri was dubious accepting any gift from the unknown that was Okto.
Her face was like a slab of steel. “I appreciate the offers, but I must decline. To accept such things from a Human - Vizard - Hollow - whatever you are; would reflect poorly upon me. I know not who you are, or what you are. I know only that you're hiding a great deal from me." Mihri took another sip of tea, looking over the rim of the mug for the slightest change in Okto. Her ears awaited any gasp, an increase of heart-rate, signs of anxiety. Her eyes scanned for the slightest facial anomaly. "You will have my attention for tonight. That is about all I can give you until the gaps in your story are filled. A few hours is the limit of my trust for you at the moment.” she sipped her tea again.
There was no negative reaction from the man, but rather a curious smile formed on his lips and he couldn't help but let out an amused chuckle. "Is that so? Well I must say, that is a good philosophy to live by. 'Trust no one'." Theocelese lifted the cup of fermented fruit juice up, bringing it to his still curved expression, and took a drink. Still, his eyes never left Mihri's, and if it wasn't apparent by now, this was a contest to see who would pick up on the other's reactions. Theocelese hoped that his own reaction served to throw the Shinigami off. "I understand if such a thing will damage your reputation, and if that is the case, I would have no hand in such a thing." The man relaxed again and from his pocket, produced a thick, black wallet. His eyes finally drifted, shifting over to the clock mounted on the wall, and once more, locked back onto Mihri's own eyes.
"You are not stupid, in fact you're very perceptive in your estimations of my not telling you everything about me. I hide what I must, because like you, I too have a reputation, and I must look after my own well being and future. I am none of the things you accuse me of being, I will tell you that much, and I must reiterate that I am just a man who wants to see nothing but some peace and quiet before his time comes. That, and like all men who consider themselves warriors, don't wish to be forgotten in the annals of time." A final drink was taken from his second beverage, and afterward, Okto began putting the dishes from his order together so the waitress could have a far easier, and much quicker time cleaning the table. "You'd think my end would come in the form of some great battle, but in past years my visits to doctors revealed lung cancer to afflict me. While a regular man would have died from such a thing now, we both know I am no such thing." As Theocelese shifted his gaze to the leather in his hands, there was the tinge of anger and regret in them and a subtle grinding of his teeth. This was no lie, had he not been murdered at the hands of another Arrancar, cancer would have done him in. Though, like much of this encounter, he could only spill out half-truths. The man pulled out several large bills, excessively exceeding the amount due, and left them on the table.
"I will take no more of your time, Miss Ikeda, as I've business myself to attend to soon. Once you're finished with your tea, I'll see you to the door."
Okto dodged Mihri’s words like a swordsman might dodge a blade. He accepted her refusal with laughter, and a quip about how trusting no one was wise. He kept his eyes locked to hers as he drank from his cup. He measured Mihri with a determined gaze as she studied him. Okto assured Mihri that he understood and seemed to shrug off her comments. His reaction was expected. If perhaps not its nature, but its purpose, a deflection. Mihri seemed to have picked a poor opponent for this game. Even Mihri's senses, far better tuned for this intrigue than most, could not dig under the cool placidity that shielded him. His heart did not flutter. His breathing stayed calm and steady with the exception of before and after laughing. Her eyes could only pick up the innocuous glance at the clock. Okto showed nothing, revealed nothing, his re-assurance calmly delivered. He stacked the empty dishes, and finished his drink. She began to doubt herself. He truly was hiding something, his own words revealed so. Mihri began to wonder that perhaps he truly was the able paladin he attempted to externalize. His admitting of having cancer drove this home. Something about his gaze when it shifted away may have caught a heart string.
It did not matter. Ever a diligent death god, Mihri's only concern in this situation was protecting the balance. Okto's words would not be enough for Lieutenant Abarai. They were not even enough for herself to fully believe. Many are simply ignorant of their destructive capability as the Quincy were. Mihri still had procedure left to complete, she could not allow Okto to so easily duck away. There still might be something left to accomplish in their duel of words. Whatever pertinent information had already been forced from him. Mihri could not let him leave. Not yet.
"I think not." Mihri said, finishing her tea. "I've a job to do. Your words alone will not be enough for Central 46. I'm sure you're aware. We wait for a hollow that you will cleanse... or not... and I will write a report." Mihri said firmly. "Rarely am I so honest with cases like you. You're different though. I feel no need for any duplicity. Or am I mistaken?"
Mihri placed her own plate and mug at the end of the table. She too drew a wallet from a pocket, unfolded several paper notes, and placed them on top of the others. "If you speak true then we will have no problems. I will go on my way and cease to bother you. Here is your chance to prove me wrong for all." The waitress returned and collected the bill. Her face seemed to light with joy at the amount. She bowed low and thanked them kindly. The pair exchanged more pleasantries with the waitress before departing the cafe.
They returned to the rain soaked streets. They walked for a time, down the sidewalk in a silence until Mihri spoke up. "We came to them first, diplomatically. We requested they alter the function of their abilities. They refused. We then requested they simply cease their actions. They refused again. The balance was worsening by the day as a crisis deepened. We had to act. Central 46 declared war. Only a handful of battles managed to crush the Quincy's combat potential in the opening years of the war. From then on it was simple slaughter. Many were strong enough to defend. Every village we purged was a siege. You are right, what you said earlier. It needed to be done. Be that as it may. No one with any sanity could ever feel whole again after butchering a child before her mother's very eyes."
From her pocket came a ringing. Three beeps in quick succession, repeating. Mihri halted mid step and turned her blue gaze to Okto. "Be careful when trying to make history. You may just end up making it worse."
Mihri pulled the device from her pocket and began walking again as she inspected the map. The hollow was not far, a half kilometer away and approaching. She looked up into the sky and saw a great winged beast. It was a shadow cast against the serene black of the night sky. The creature turned in its flight and dove down at an angle. The beast flew quickly toward the pair and landed on the roof of a nearby building. The beast had the features of a Wyvern. Two massive wings unfurled from a long slender body. At the base of its tail were two short legs that bore massive claws, its mask was like a lizard’s face but with foot long teeth The creature appeared similar in length to a city bus. The Wyvern seemed to notice the pair. It turned to them and screeched. A warning.
Mihri smiled and gestured to the hollow, “Your succor, sir knight.”
"Hardly so, though I shall oblige you one last time for the night. You will get to write out your report with pleasant findings, and I will be freed from your obligations to write a report of my own." Theocelese said these words with a smile as sly as a fox could give, again in truth, and as to what he meant Mihri could only internally speculate. The moon fell and the run rose a great deal of times since he wrote down anything close to a report on another spiritual being. She was...different, as he was to her. Though her decision to draw blade against him, had he been found out, would happen instantly to be sure, he knew there was more than just a jaded soldier choosing to keep an eye on him. Theocelese did not guess, or assume this. Mihri's description of what felt like a first hand account with the Quincy assured him, and the words spoken sunk deeper into Okto's form. The faux-human's stature shifted drastically. No more did he walk with a proud stride befitting an officer with great military might. His reflections on this were internal, and he chose not to speak of them, but it was the same. Aizen abandoned Las Noches, leaving thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Arrancar and Hollow of all form behind. Theocelese, his former Fraccion, and the scores of more who took to his litanies of freedom made the decision to take the former kingdom of Barragan back. At first, the former Espada acted as an emissary, attempting to reason with the other beings he called 'kin'. He spoke to them, explaining they were no longer forced to a man who forced servitude upon them, and they did not listen. They sent Theocelese away, but again he returned, bringing visions of some semblance of peace they could have if they only united. No more rulers, no more kings, every man and woman could have a voice in any major decision that could possibly ever be made. They hissed at him, accused him of heretical beliefs in not eagerly waiting for the "Master" to return to take the reigns of their leashes once more.
Then and only then, in a different time and world when diplomacy failed yet again, Theocelese cursed Aizen for the decision he was forced to make. These loyalist beings were given one final chance to keep their lives, and an ultimatum was given: Leave, or die. Many abandoned Las Noches, these ones knew what the Grecian was capable of, and heard hushed stories of the thing he once was. Those that stayed were the most defiant, they did not care what the 8th Espada told them. Their loyalty died with them. The slaughter which commenced was one unlike any that had ever come to pass in Hueco Mundo. While Theocelese came out with enough injuries deep enough to leave scars, he lost many good friends and family, brothers and sisters. Las Noches lost every warrior who valued servitude over freedom and from both sides, Theocelese held those of every form, man, woman or child. The lattermost cut into his psyche, leaving permanent scars invisible to all those around him. This act was the single most difficult one to ever be made, and while it was something that needed to be done, these memories were hidden in the bottoms of bottles, in the filter of every cigarette, and across every inch of scarring the front of his torso adorned. Mihri's bringing up of how...similar experiences they shared was the sole reason for almost a complete change in behavior. From his easy going nature to speak openly, as openly as he could that is, he simply let the silence between the two remain.
Lightning streamed across the sky, thunder echoed from this direction and that, and once more the storm came to life. The rain would fall again soon, and the memories of past deeds drowned Theocelese enough that he hadn't realized a cigarette was pursed between his lips and lit. Even when the phone of the Shinigami came to life, the man surprisingly did not react to it as she did. He was several steps ahead of Mihri before stopping, and by then, the cigarette was already half-way gone. Reality came crashing against his foremost thoughts, just in time for him to hear and perceive the woman's words. As Mihri's eyes did so not too long ago, Okto's golden iris' deadened. "I'm afraid, my dear, it is far too late for that." The man spoken in almost a whisper, as if fearing the repercussions of bringing up such a topic, even though there was no time for him to do so.
He knew the Hollow was there, and closing in to their location with haste. Theocelese followed Mihri, trailing behind her until she came to a stop once more. It became aware of them, its masked form was monstrously beautiful, even the screech warping inside his ears became the sharp, striking notes of a hundred violins. In an almost reluctant fashion, the man slowly drew the three-foot blade, revealing it to be almost...bland. Its date of origin looked to be centuries old, and by the looks alone would could assume it was forged from bronze. The weapon, simplistic, but none the less held the visage of something crafted only by masterful hands. "I will do this for you, Miss Ikeda...but I, in turn, would like to hear you sing a song for me the next time we cross paths. Whether it is in this realm, and I'm still among the living, or a soul in the afterlife. Please consider it a...last request from a dying man."
The look he gave Mihri altered from the sullen and melancholic gaze he kept focused on the saturated pavement. This one held a bit of a look of defiance, as with eyes alone he was telling Mihri there was always the option for him to let the Shinigami do her job, that there was nothing she could do to stop him. The man only known as 'Okto' was free, comitted no crimes against the spiritual realm thus far, and though Mihri found a reason to continue prying at the knowledge he coveted, she ultimately could do nothing to him. Not lift her blade, nor forcefully make him go into this fight. Had the Shinigami offered payment, be it a bit of silver from her home, or even knowledge on her behalf, the situation would have been different. Now, Okto put the price for his services on the table, and the onus would be on Mihri, as to whether she would do what was asked of her. Yet, when the hard stare softened ever so slightly, it became clear he would be doing what was asked of him for the sake of his last spoken words.
The sound of thunder cracked as the man lifted himself into the air, his form quickly going straight for the Hollow. Okto did not stop and engage, but rather, flew past the beast. Like a cat to a toy, it turned and with another screech, flapped its wings and pursued. The being Mihri was so keen on observing knew better than to fight in such a populated area, and his intentions were to lead the Hollow away. Once in a sufficiently high location, Theocelese stared down the Hollow as it was nearly upon him in its pursuit. The man took stance to defend, though there was a missing element to complete the way he stood and angled his blade. It looked almost as if the man was used to holding a shield on his left arm, but that, in time, would not impact his martial prowess. Theocelese wanted this to be done with sooner, rather than later. The draconic Hollow lashed out with its natural weapons, claws and teeth and tail. Okto was quick in his combat responses, blocking and dodging. The deflecting of the Hollow's blows was done in a manner which caused hideous lacerations. He was intentionally bleeding the creature, weakening it for the final blow. Each movement taken allowed the man to get in a little bit closer than the last, and once within the right distance, a brilliant blue light spawned from Okto's hand.
The Hollow reared back, its maws opening and a light of its own formed. It drew power from the raging storm, creating a pulsating ball of energy that surged in a line from its throat. Just then, as the beam fired, the blue energy formed into a spear, clutched tightly in Okto's hand. With a roar powerful enough to rival the thunder in the heavens, the man drove the spear upwards, impaling the beast underneath its jaw. With pure strength alone, Okto pierced the outer portion of its upper jaw, pinning the monster's mouth shut. Electrical currents exploded this way and that as the Hollow's power backfired, internally shocked by its own attack. The man used this moment to twist his form, spinning a complete three-sixty to strike with his sword. The thick hide of the Hollow tore open, and a torrent of blood began to cascade in tandem with the rain falling below. With the creature's fast-thrumming heart exposed, Theocelese grabbed hold of the spear shaft again, pulling down and with one hideous motion, his impromptu weapon was now freed, and thusly, thrust into the Hollow's heart. Immediately, it stopped moving and for just a few seconds longer, it lived its final life as this breath-taking daemon. As the Hollow dissipated, so would his spear. True to his word, the soul of the Hollow had not been obliterated as it would, had he been of the descent of a wretched Quincy. The Hollow, now dispatched with the expert precision of the seasoned fighter Okto claimed to be, left the rolling drums of the clouds to continue their din. The man sheathed his blade, face, clothes and hair covered in blood that was already diluting from the water crashing against him.
"This task you ask of me, is now done." Theocelese spoke, his body descending rapidly to the streets below. No doubt Mihri stayed within a reasonable, but safe distance to watch and observe during the short sortie. With the woman now nearby, and no threats abound, Okto made eye contact once more. His chest was rising and falling rapidly, and against the darkness of the night, he almost glowed from the paleness of his skin. The man's breathing looked almost strained, and he held a look which showed me was fighting a coughing fit. Theocelese suffered this affliction before, knew how to replicate the effects of it. More memories of pain, this one physical rather than psychological.
"Kousta." The single word spoken came out slightly raspy, and weathered, but despite all that looked to hinder him now, the man stood with the pride and clout Mihri had only ever seen until they took to the streets again prior to this encounter. The man removed the bloodied glove of his right hand and rose it to shake. "This is my name I was given as an infant." Mihri deserved at least one, complete truth. Not half of one, or one smothered in lies. Though it was shorter for a much longer name, this one he was most used to being called, and like so recently, it was just another tick in his mind that caused a grief he would swallow and kept hidden. With his gesture in wait, and his mortal name finally revealed, all it seemed that remained was for...pleasant departures.
I took some liberties with the Shigai for a more dramatic effect, figured you wouldn't care. Talked to BM more extensively about it and killing the Hollow, so long as it isnt a Ress being released, or anything blatantly obvious like cero or bala, the tech used will feel as if a regular human tech is being used. The Hollow will be reincarnated. Sorry the damn post is so long, but I found a good song that seemed fitting and matched it with storm sounds.
<--in 15 seconds there is a giant boom
Name: Hundred Spear Strike Class: Hollow Technique Tier:III Type: Offensive Range: Medium Description: A singular energy spear is formed upon usage. When thrown, the spear splits into twenty additional spears much like hundred step rail. Spears move at half bala speed.
A strike of lightning parted the gloom and faded to the sounds of rolling thunder, as the man known to be Okto kicked himself into the air and into battle. Mihri sighed, the light in her eyes settled. “If you prove to be a protector then you and I should sing a song together. If ever we cross paths again.”
It was all she could promise him. Okto flew off with several jumps from one Reishi platform to another, further up and further away from the city with each step. Mihri followed along with well timed flash steps to watch the fight. The hollow was nearly upon him when Okto turned to face it, blade raised to block. The hollow closed the distance and threw claws, gnashed teeth, and threw its wings at the defiant spirit. Okto expertly checked each attempted blow with a parry that did as much damage as block. The creature was bleeding, its blows weakening as Okto wore it down further. He inched closer with each blow and, seeming to find an opening, grew a ball of blue light in his hand. The hollow threw its weight back, a bright crackle of energy forming in its gaping jaws. Mihri watched from afar, transfixed on Okto’s brilliant dance. The light in Okto’s palm became a shaft of dancing lightning. He sent his spear to his enemy, impaling its jaw with such force that the creature’s mouth was bound shut, its attack backfiring in its own throat. As the bolt made its mark, thunder clapped so loud even Mihri's ears rang,
Okto used the moment the creature was stunned to move around it and throw a devastating cut to the hollow's ribs. Blood showered from the beast as it was torn open by the blow. Seeming to have planned the whole charade, Okto freed his spear with a swift pull and another spray of blood. He then thrust the crackling bolt into the creature's chest, accompanied by another clap of thunder. A twitch, another, the hollow appeared to sigh before it faded away. Mihri already knew the answer, but checked the screen of the device in her hand. No warnings, no flashing lights, nothing. If the souls within the hollow had been destroyed, the device would going mad. Just to be sure, she opened a program that checked the flow of souls. And- nothing. A hollow, fourteen souls, showed up as processed a few seconds prior. Mihri nodded, satisfied, as Okto returned to firm ground and confirmed to her that his task was complete.
"I saw. Well done." She said with an admiring tone, "Everything checks out. It would seem you are not hastening the end of the world." He descended to the ground, blood soaked and winded. His breath was heaving, Mihri could hear the strain in his lungs. He had not lied, it had only taken some effort to make it obvious. He looked like he fought back a cough, and sounded it, Mihri thought she could hear a stifled cough or two. Mihri now wished she had not needed to make fight the beast, but there was no other way to prove his legality.
"Kousta." Was what he called himself, a different name, a real one. Somehow Mihri had suspected 'Okto' was not his real name. Or perhaps 'Okto' was his real name now, 'Kousta' having been lost to the ages . Kousta was the name given to him as a child, the one he was accustomed to. It seemed to fit better. She shook his hand when it was offered, meeting his gaze with a warm smile. No longer did her gaze hold suspicion. No longer did she seem to fear him. "Kousta. It has been a pleasure, Kousta. I'll try to find a good song for us to sing." She freed from his grip, "Fare thee well. If you ever need a Shinigami, you know who to call." She smiled again, then turned, and was off with a flash step.
