It has been a short morning, filled with boring food and a short walk from his house to a nearby restaurant that serves a rather impressive bacon and eggs for the poor condition of this section of town. In the short amount of time that they have been in this section of town, Gage has been their most loyal and most frequent customer, stopping by almost every other day to get breakfast or dinner. This time, the cool air of the morning having passed, his appetite moves to lunch, seeking out a burger to chow on with a side of fries that were cooked no later than thirty minuets ago. Food does indeed sound rather delicious, grease and cheese leading him away from his work to feed.
Opening the front door a small bell over head chimes, signaling the appearance of a new customer or at least a reoccurring one. "Missy, I need a cheese burger. I am starving and work is killing me." Looking around the small room he is met with little, the lights almost all off and the window blinds drawn. "Hello?" He seemed alone, the lights in the room faded enough to blind him from stepping into the dark from the sun outside.
"Gage, welcome back. It has been a while since I last saw you," it was an older mans voice, one that he had not expected to hear again since this man was the cause of the loss of his own Fullbring.
"Charilus. What are you doing here?" Gage walked over to the voice, seated at a dark table.
"Well I gave you some time after your last foray with the hollows to get your mind straight and I thought that you would eventually find your way back to me but it seems that you have found yourself distracted from the bigger picture." Charilus leans forward into the table, a small plate of fries in front of him covered with cheese and chopped up bits of bacon. "When you didn't come back I watched and waited but you kept at it, working on these...trinkets."
"Trinkets? I have found something that we all should, everybody, be involved in stopping. Your masked monster? Where is he? He is stuck in the masks that you hold, split into seven pieces and no threat as we stand here now. You know who is a threat? An army of hollows that are mobilizing to level Naruki City as we speak. The 'trinkets' that I am making are the tools that I am going to use to end this fight. There are innocent people dying and you are watching me from a distance as I fight to keep them alive." Gage was getting irritated for the first time in a long time, his attitude only coming out when he speaks of the damage to Karakura town and the possibility that they will be more death.
"Your hollows seem bad to you, they may even seem bad to the Shinigami but to me. I know what really is bad and this beast is the nightmare. Let the Shinigami handle this and you can get back to putting the last of the masks away for us to destroy or else a bad situation is just going to get worse."
"Yeah? And what good am I? I lost my Fullbring thanks to you and your 'hunt'. I have a third of the power that I had before," Gage could feel his frustration growing, his emotions tied directly to this conversation and Charilus' wish for him to turn his back on this town, ignore the deaths and pain of the Arrancar that want to destroy the world of the living.
"Even at the level of strength that you have now your still sufficient enough to manage these tasks. Besides we did not select you based on your strengths. We chose you because you more than any other possible applicant that we looked through were trust worthy. We need someone that is both determined and will follow through the mission even if they feel like it might not end well for them," Charilus picks out another fry, wiping up some salt on his dish before eating it.
"Grandfather, please show a bit more sympathy. How would you feel if you lost your fullbring?" Charilus looks at the young woman walking out of the kitchen. It has been a while since he last saw her, Elan looking just as radiant as ever. Gage could not help but feel a bit calmer now that she was here, just her presence making him feel like he was happier.
"Elan, I understand your concern but the situation is more dire than one mans feelings. More than a hundred lives. We need to make some progress before the others do or else we are going to get left behind and be unable to stop what ever they have planned. There are forces in play here that would make the Soul Society shiver." Charilus picked out another fry, repeating the process as his plate was nearly half empty.
"And why are we not asking the Soul Society for help on this?" Gage could already anticipate the answer but he wanted to be sure.
"Imagine if they knew about the situation, that they knew that we were fighting a war against a fullbringer from over three hundred years ago. Right now the Soul Society barely tolerates us, our less than pure origins being something that most Shinigami find less than ideal. Now imagine if they found out that Fullbringers as a whole are able to become so strong that they could end Soul Society. Do you not think that they would opt of the safer route and go with execution of the race rather than help us with its prevention? It would be on par with the Quincy Genocide." The entire time Charilus waves the fry out and about so as to make his point.
"That was a long time ago grandfather," Elan walks over to the table and pulls out a chair after giving Gage a good long 'hello' hug. "The Soul Society does not do that kind of thing any more and even if they did there is no way that we could be sure that they would do that to us. There are just too many Fullbringers for the whole of Soul Society to declare war. On top of that we very well could use all the extra help that we can manage to get this done. If there are more masked hollow out there then we need to make use that we do everything we can to get the masks while at the same time giving everyone involved the best chance of survival."
"Yes well I am not willing to take the chance that if we do make it through this that the Soul Society is not going to just turn around and execute us all. Once in history is enough for me." Charilus finishes off his fries and slides the plate away.
"Fine, your right. What do I have to do?" Charlilus smiles and leans over the table to continue, digging through a bag on his side.
"So this meeting was a bit premature, the next location that you have to head to hidden somewhere in these books but I am having quiet a difficult time translating it into a readable form for information." Charilus opens the bag and sets a couple of older books on the table, flipping to some bookmarked pages. "I won't be able to decipher the last of these books for some time, maybe a day or two as it looks like Edmund, the writer, had written it in both Latin and a form of short hand that he himself made up. Until then though you are free to do what you need, I will be in contact with you through Elan when the time comes that I know where we are going next."
Elan smiles and looks over at Gage but he is so lost in thought that he does not even notice. Perhaps there was a time that he would have let his mind be drawn in by the rather hypnotizing looks of Elan but between the massive attack and the current state of his city he finds nothing but devastation in the world around him. "So Gage, how are you?"
Gage snaps out of his barrel of depression, looking up at her warm smile for the first time in a long time. "Uh well, I suppose I am alright all things considered. Tired, but alright." Gage could feel a slight amount of exhaustion in his eyes, the backs of them heavy with sleep. His late nights and early mornings researching the arcane symbols required for his Soul Communication gloves make him more and more tired, needing to catch up on a single nights worth of sleep at least once this week.
"Well I have the grill still hot and some more fries in the back. Would you like a bite to eat?" Gage couldn't help but smile. He has known Elan for over six months now and never once did he ever consider her to be the cooking type, her high end life style being more along the lines of bringing her the food to eat. It was a little surprising but Gage was still starving, his stomach not letting him turn down the chance to eat.
"I think that I will have a burger if your offering. That sounds nice actually," Smiling at him Elan leads the way to the back into the kitchen, the smell of cooked fries taunting him the whole way making his mouth water. "I never really took you as the cooking type. When did you start cooking?"
"Oh not that long ago actually. After we did that run up in Russia I decided I wanted to see if I could make a steak as good as the ones that they were serving and I guess I just never really put it down." Gage looked Elan over as she continued to talk, explaining her new found hobby with food. Before she was a slight build, almost 110lbs at 5'4" but now she seemed to have put on a couple of pounds and not in a bad way. Her hips and chest had filled out, her face not quite so gaunt and her skin now more 'healthy' for first glance.
"Well you look good. It seems you picked up a couple of pounds," Gage bits his lips frantically searching for a way to word that again where he does not sound like a jackass. "I mean you," She turns and faces him, a meat pulverizer in one hand and a ball of crushed up hamburger meat in the other," You look great. I would have thought that you were working out and have filled out some. You looked a little thin before." Gage feels the awkward sensation of embarrassment rising in his chest.
"Mhhhmmm..." Elan holds the hammer loosely in one hand while she sets the meat down on the table. "A little thin? You thought that I was too skinny?" With each emphasized word she flicks the hammer about making him feel a little more than worried about how she is going to react. A moment of silence passes between them as he looks into her eyes, the look that she is giving him making him feel a little more than uncomfortable. "I suppose I was a bit small for my size." Turning and looking over her self she even turns to see her butt, her small frame not letting it get out of hand. Gage walks around the table to see what she was doing, a ball of meat with a handful of mushrooms getting stuffed into the center.
"Its a Swiss and Portobello mushroom stuffed cheese burger with fries. Its a little out of the ordinary for this area but I figured you would like it being that you are from the US." Gage nods his approval. He hasn't had a 'real' burger, hand made and cooked for just him, in some time. The kitchen here was used to cooking and handing out food for who ever had the money but there was something to say about how good food is when its made with care.
"I love it. Can't wait. So aside from cooking what have you been up to?" Elan keeps at it, molding the burger and setting it aside. She has been working on doing it for some time, Gage himself not being able to make a decently shaped burger for the life of him.
"Well Grandfather has been keeping an eye on you and letting me keep up to date with what you are looking for," stopping with what she is doing she looks up at him. A normal person would have been a least a little upset with being spied on but Gage has been dealing with her grandfather and the looming shadow of the group that he works with for so long that he no longer cared about the minor loss in his privacy.
"So then you know what I am making?" Gage was a little offended, not from her prodding grandfather but by the fact that she was so close to knowing what he was up to all this time and she not once even tried to get into contact with him. "All this time and you didn't even bother trying to say hi?"
"Well you were a little bit distraught from Russia. I figured that you would be better off handling your problem on your own for a little while before I bothered you again." She seemed genuinely apologetic and she was making him some food so it would be best for him to get over his slightly hurt feelings and move on. "But yes, I know what you are working on. The Alchemy Science that you learned from some Quincy."
"Yeah, but I am having some troubles with getting the last of the math down. There is a couple of issues with the mixture of my energy and the energy in the stone that I am using as a Capacitor," Gage knew that this kind of science was a little above Elan's head, her expertise being more towards the mastery of skill based energy manipulation. Even so she was much better at research than him and would probably have some good ideas as to what he should do next.
"Actually I do have something. Its in that bag over there," Elan gestures with her head over to a blue paper bag on the counter. "I couldn't think of anything that I could say that would show you how sorry I am that you lost your Fullbring so I took some time and read up on your 'alchemy'. From what I know everything that you will need to finish your 'symbol' will be in that book."
Gage walks over and props the book open, reading though a small section of page at a time. It was exactly what he was looking for. It held idea, concepts, theories with experiments and basic physic's behind the reaction that occurs from the activation. "This is...This is amazing." Gage was in awe, this book held everything that he needed for his glove, all the way down to the last little bit of how to best wire the interior of the glove for the least interference of Reiatsu. "Is this...Is this mine?"
Elan smiles,"Yes you can keep it. Its an old book though so be gentle on it. The pages have seem more years than your country." Gage smiles and walks over to the counter where she is preparing the vegetables for the burgers, the patties on the flame grill and fries set aside on a napkin to get any extra oil off. Hopping up onto the counter he begins to read.
Here in contains the works of four hundred years. The study of alchemy and its uses, the science behind the art and the effects of its manipulation. Gage sat there reading quickly through the intro until he get to the first chapter, explaining the effects of energy on the ambient energy in the world. At first he was lost, the terms used not all being described in the book but he was beginning to make some headway with the book when Elan's hand touches his knee. "Time to eat. Put the book down." Holding out his plate there is a massive burger with a decent sized pile of fries next to it. Grinning he takes the plate and shuts the book, setting it aside and hops off of the counter.
Together they walk to the dining room, taking a seat at a table with a little bit of sun on it. Taking a couple of glasses as she walks by the waiters counter she sets her plate down and fills them with the lemonade from this morning before Charilus shooed off the workers. "Elan, How did he get rid of the employees?"
Giggling she sets down the cup in front of him and takes her seat. "He offered them all some money, it was not too much but I helped 'insist' that they call in for the day." Gage has never really had her use her powers on him but he still did manage to know what they were. She could influence the surrounding people to 'feel' like how she wanted. Like she was able to push emotions into them and make them choose to do what she wanted as long as they would make that decision on their own if they felt right.
"Well that was nice of you, how much did he-" a sudden crash through the front window makes both Gage and Elan jump, knocking their food to the ground as their table flipped over. "Fuck!" Gage stared at the food for a split second before looking back to the crash. There coiling in a withering pile on the ground in front of them is a massive snake like being. Totaling in what had to be over thirty feet in length is a snake, slithering and rounding itself into a ball. Jutting from the top of the coil is the body of a woman, naked save for what looked like barbed chain wrapped around her wrists and chest like a makeshift armor, the spikes not seaming to draw blood from her. Extending from each arm a length of chain, withering like their own snakes, is tipped with a four inch long hooked blade.
"elan...is this one of yours?" Gage was referring to the large resources of manpower behind her and her grandfather, the hollow like energy emanating from the snake-woman stifling the the air.
"No...no that is nothing I have ever seen before," Gage moved slowly, stepping over the mess on the diner floor so that he stood in between Elan and the snake. If she did not know what it was and the Hollow, even though it seemed to have no mask, was crazy enough to attack Gage in him home territory then it would be safe to bet that this thing was more than it appeared. Normal hollows tended to wake around him naturally, moving to create a path for him to travel. This had to either be crazy or stronger than the normal hollow, that made it more dangerous too. Taking his chance Gage leaps into action. Elan was a severe liability here, her skills in combat were not lacking but her actual power level was far too low to be in the vicinity while Gage even in his weakened state was fighting.
Green sparks of light dance at his feet, the shoes beneath him arcing with Soul Communication energy. Just as he is about to jump a crack of thunder sounds from his feet, Soul Communication energy charging both the ground beneath him and the air around him to launch him with the force of a train. Colliding into the torso of the woman he feels her steel like skin slam into his shoulder, the barbed chain digging its way into his arm and back where it makes contact. The impact was enough to drive the woman backwards and into the plaster wall to blow out the side of the room into the alley, dust and bricks falling around them.
Recovering with her spiritual body faster than Gage was able to she lashes out with both hands, grabbing him around the neck, coiling her snake half around him like a constrictor. Gage could feel it in her hands, he had managed to get Elan a little farther away from this thing but it was definitely too strong. The grip it hand on him was stronger than he could muster, his hands desperately prying at the steel like fingers on his neck. Reach out to his side he searches the ground for something, anything that he could use to defend himself when his hand comes to a piece of broken re-bar. His eyes now turning red lock gazes with her, his hand pulling the re-bar closer with his fingers. Grabbing it like a dagger he drives it into the bicep of her left arm, the metal punching though the skin to erupt out the other side of the muscle.
Screeching at him she releases, Gage being flung aside by the quickly unwrapping tail into a concrete wall with enough force to prop him into a small man sized crater. Hissing at him the snake woman reaches over and tenativly touches the rebar jutting out the side of her arm. Wincing away from it she begins to slither over to him, the lengths of chain on her arms dragging across the ground. Gage was winded, his legs and arms numb from the choking while his eyes were blurry and fading in and out of focus. His left hand, falling to his waist dangles at his belt line while the snake woman flicks a length of chain up to grabe the blade like a dagger.
Thrusting forward the blade peirces his skin, driving into his abdomen as Gage reaches forward and grabs her wrist with his right hand. Looking down at the blade he feels her hands, all grabbing him from the head, shoulders and waist begin to push him against the wall.
"You missed one," Gage's left hand, still free at his belt line grabs his 'x' shaped belt buckle, a blade erupting from one of the arms. The tip of that blade leaps out, peircing into the ribcage of the woman cutting off the supply of air to the scream that she would have let out. Ripping out his blade he goes to thrust again but before the blade is able to peirce her skin she launches herself backwards out of range, blood pouring out of the wound in her side. Slithering into a ball she curls up, weaving in and out of her coils until nothing is visible except for the scales of her tail. In and out it weaves until the ball gets smaller and smaller, the last bit of the tail seeming to slither into a small portal and vanishing.
"Elan. Elan," Gage did not move, he could feel it, a small hot pain in his back making him fearful of moving or else he could make the wound worse. Peaking her head out the hole in the wall she looks around before she steps out.
"Where did it go?" Elan trots over to him and lifts one of his arms to look at where a smll pool of blood is coming from.
"I have no idea. It looks like it portaled back to where ever it came from. Help me off this wall. I stabbed that thing with a peice of rebar but when it threw me over here I think I got a small peice of rebar in my back," Gage pulls away slowy, the ribs in the rebar popping against his slowly slidding out skin. Hissing in pain he feels the last of the metal pull free letting him fall to his knee, bending over stretching out the wound and making his back feel like it was on fire.
Elans hand covers the wound, yellow light glowing from her palm as the pain instantly begins to fade away in sync with the intensity of the yellow light. "Thanks. What the hell was that thing?" Gage leans back to flex some of the healing muscles on his midspine. The snake like woman had an energy similar to a hollow's now that he had some time to think but it was odd, it seemed more...intense than a normal hollow. She also had no signs of a mask, making the chance that she was a normal hollow next to none. Her skin was similar to that of an Arrancar Heiro but at the same time it was not quiet as tough, the iron rebar not normally being able to peirce the skin.
"I am still not sure. I have no idea, that was unique. No masks, not Heiro, it had reiatsu similar to a hollow's but it was much more malevolent. If you made me guess I would say that it was something closer to an escaped 'Hellion'," Gage kept one knee on the ground as she spoke, only looking back at her after she says that it might have been an escaped Hellion.
"Hellion? Like a demon from hell?" Gage had heard of the 'hell' before, a place similar to the world of Hueco Mundo but some how it was supposed to be worse, the land filled with fire and lava. There were rumors that some one had escaped a few years ago but there were no official papers on it so it might have just been that. A rumor.
Elan finishes up on his back, patting him on the wound's white scar to 'bless' it as o0ne would a tattoo. "Something similar to that. Reports from Polarity are that some where a Gate has opened for a short time and by the time that boots were on the ground there the gate was closed. Grand father was on the scene shortly after, confirming that there had indeed been something that had managed to get out." Gage stands up and touches his chest with the palm of his hand, green soul communication energy arcing across the fabric of his shirt mending the hole seamlessly until there was nothing left, save for the blood which then vanishes in a flash of green light. "I have someone here in town that would know a bit more about that though. He works in a church on the other side of town. I want to get over there to ask him some questions before we get caught up in this."
Gesturing up at the sky she points out the deep black clouds rolling in, bubbling in a dark menacing way that seemed almost supernatual. If it was going to rain it would do it soon and it was going to be heavy. "Yeah, lets get back to the shop I have a bike there that we can take and some clothes that you are going to want to wear if you ride with me." Elan's smile fades a little, looking over her yellow sundress. Frowning she sighs in acceptance.
Ten minuets later Gage is sitting on his 1250 Yalanza Super Sport with ultra tires and a small nitrous addition that he added in a few days ago. He could take almost any other bike and get there just as fast but this was a bike that he both wanted to test and push. He had a customer that wanted it soon and he needed to redline the engine for the breakin. Not good for reputation if the bikes he sells break down the first time that they are pushed. Stepping out the office door she tugs on her riding jacket, pulling it down to cover her midriff even though it was only designed to cover the ribcage and torso where you would normally skid when you fall.
Her waist is covered by a riding armor belt making her look like the hottest biker girl he has seen in quiet some time. Everything except for one thing. "The flats have to go. You need those." Gage points at a pair of riding boots on the wall up on a shelf. Together everything looked amazing on her, the boots a nice touch. "If you fall, just land on your butt and use your elbows and back to slide to a stop. The armor will keep you fine so just dont freak out." Barely touching the throttle the engine roars, louder than any of his other bikes currently in stock. It was like riding a dragon, more than enough power to outrun a corvette in any race for any distance.
Rolling out the garage door he pulls his Fullbringers dog tag and slips it around his neck, the magic of the token keeping others from 'noticing' him as he was about to break several city ordenances and most likely commit a federal offense with how he is about to drive around. "Hold on and lean when I lean." Tucking himself in and ducking his head he could feel her squeaze him from behind her arms clutching him desperatly, he could feel it in her hands. She was shaking from fear," I will start out slow and let you get the feel of everything.
Rolling out Gage lets the engine idle them to 25MPH. Staying like that for about five minuets he could feel her starting to relax a bit, her grip still tight but not shaking anymore. A crack of thunder over head makes Gage slowdown and look up to see the remenants of a blue bolt of lightning fade away. "LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO GET THAT RAIN SOON! I AM GOING TO GET US THERE A BIT FASTER BUT YOU NEED TO HANG ON!" He had to yell to make himself heard over the sound of the bike looking behind him he spots the most ominous wall of black rain that he has ever seen. He knew it was just rain and that it was a little dangerous to drive a bike in the rain but he was used to that kind of riding. However he couldn't shake the feeling of fear, wanting to avoid the rain as best he can. It was like he was afraid of the rain itself.
Scooting his butt back a pinch he ducks into the windsheild and stays low, Elan hugging down on him. Giving the engine a quarter throttle the front wheel skips up a bit, getting a second of air before he was able to get the her back under control. Behind him Elan screamed, short but she had deffinatly screamed slightly, her face tucked off to the side to hide herself from the view. Gage himself could feel the fear in his chest peaking, getting more and more intense as a wall of rain got closer and closer, the drops blotting out any light of buildings behind him.
