Vanessa looked at the mountain before her. She cursed to herself at having been given such a thankless task. Strapped to her back was a large needle, and a cord of spiritual thread. She had been told that somewhere over the pass here, there was a 'hole'. The soshi had told her rather more firmly than was necessary that she had to leave the area if a hollow came through the hole as shinigami and plus-souls alike had been hollowfying at an alarming rate. Nessa had scoffed; she wasn't a coward, and she wasn't afraid of any measly hollows. She wandered up the path, curious about the ruined foundations of some ancient structure. Humans were so fleeting, like mayflies. She looked critically at her own fingers as she walked- the fingernails of the gigai were perfectly buffed and polished and while she adored it and found them perfectly pretty, it made her slightly annoyed that her nails were usually blunt and ragged from being inside her glove-like shikai.
She plucked her way upwards quickly enough, as she was nimble and light-footed. The mountain crested on a kind of plateau but she didn't go there- she instead followed a valley up, beating through undergrowth until she came to a cliff-face with a waterfall tumbling down it, presumably from glacial melt at the top. With trees and boulders of scree-slope origin around, Nessa looked for the tell-tale sign and found it. Unlike in Soul Society, the holes in the human world lead straight into the garganta- no dangai. Her ability to sense reiatsu was virtually non-existent, her admittedly limited experience having been virtually expunged when she gained her shikai. Despite being gigai-clad, she would still be giving off a chaotic reading of unmodulated reiatsu. She looked at the hole and shuddered- it gave her the creeps. Best to sew it up as fast as possible. She hefted the needle out of its rudimentary scabbard and began threading the strange twine through it, as she had been taught. She remembered the incantation but it had been hard as the soshi as well as Kíla and Thíla had a tendency to recite incantations in a sing-song manner, and the Soshi especially had a weird accent.
Jitter asked the person with strange tools. She sat comfortably on their shoulder, gazing into the abyss that was seemingly an open passage to hueco mundo. Taking the time to observe their actions, she came to the conclusion that they were sewing the hole shut. It shouldn't have been possible to simply take a needle and sew a dimension closed. That sounded bizarre not matter what way it was explained. Besides, those holes the other hollow opened normally closed on their own. At least, she imagined they did. What if there was an unseen brigade of seamstresses following hollows to clean up their tears? Now that would be a riot.
"Oh yeah, you probably can't see or hear me." It slipped her mind from time to time. She'd been dead for a bit, but it never set in that she existed in another... Actually, what did she exist in? It wasn't as if she were in another dimension. Hueco Mundo would be considered the extra dimension, but she was in the world of the living. She was just a ghost. Being dead was complicated. "I really wish you could hear me though, it's kinda the only reason why I'm here."
She froze. It was on her shoulder. It was talking to her. Vanessa cursed her inattentiveness, how could she let something sneak up on her so closely! Was it a hollow? She couldn't tell, she focused as hard as she could, trying to grope through the scramble of her own wild energy output and through all of the random inert reiatsu in the world but since they appeared not to be expending any energy. It took all of Vanessa's strength to keep attempting to tie her needle, which was surprisingly tricky since the needle and thread repelled each other ever so slightly, but she eventually got a knot that was as tight as she needed it, and examined her handiwork. All that and she hadn't even chipped a nail.
"I can hear you just fine, thank you." she said, rising to her full height and looking up at the strange orange fox-like creature sat on her shoulder. Her first thought was captain Komamura- maybe this was someone like him, but a fox not a wolf. "What, especially, do you want to talk to me about? I'd really appreciate if you would get off my shoulder, as well." she said through gritted teeth. She was aware how much access it had if it wanted to harm here which was problematic since she couldn't tell what the hell it was. But it spoke and didn't seem to be hostile. If it started to cause her any grief she'd just have to make it go away or kill it- but purifying spirits with her zanpakuto was messy to say the least. So that involve a few choice kido. It was imperative, she'd been told, that she had to finish this job as quickly as possible, and she understood why. These holes seemed to produce some powerful hollow, luckily this one hadn't attracted much attention since it was so far out in the sticks but it was only a matter of time before something got through and the Gotei 13 didn't exactly have a great reputation of dealing with hollows before they caused collateral...
The girl could hear her, feel her, and see her. That was amazing, and frightening. The girl wasn't dead, at least she didn't appear to be deceased. Better yet, she wasn't a shinigami. Shinigami were very obvious. They carried swords, wore black robes, and were generally not very nice. They also had a certain feeling to them, like the pressure around them was different. Hollows and humans also shared different feelings in pressure.
Jitter hopped from her shoulder, and floated in the air next to her. "I didn't really want to talk to you. Well, I did, but not really you in particular. I've just been so bored. I thought taking a trip away from the city would be fun, but it was the exact opposite. It is so boring out here. Like, absolutely nothing to do. Then I noticed the thingy you just shut. That wasn't entertaining for very long. So I thought, hey, you could be entertaining and help me pass the time. Then I thought, wait, you can't hear me. But you can hear me, which is cool." She took a breath. "Hi, my name is.... well, Kyo still calls me Jitter. It is nice to meet you."

Alarmed at the creature's exultation but relieved she wasn't on her shoulder any more, Nessa tested the point of the needle on her finger and pricked herself. Right- it was sharp enough to sew space together, of course it would prick her. She still had no idea what the hell the thing was but it was talkative as hell for sure. She began unspooling some thread, apparently it was expensive so her stitching was supposed to be as efficient as she could make it. Right. No big deal.
"Yeah well, that's what happens when you're out in the sticks." she was nervous but the thing wasn't even wearing clothes for her to imagine it without. "And I've not quite shut it yet. I need to do that now." she frowned. This couldn't be a hollow, could it? If it were it would have tried to eat her already. She almost felt bad about killing it if it was but she couldn't exactly ask now could she? That would be rude. But she had to at the very least give it the opportunity to go home since it appeared to be relatively harmless- it'd probably just get eaten by some gillian later if it did. It wasn't worth getting her hands dirty.
"So you didn't come through there did you?" she asked with a frown. "Do you not want to go back through there if you did? Before I shut it, I mean?" she asked, satisfied she had enough thread to be getting on with. She'd been told they were like dissolving stitches, so as soon as she cut the bit off the end the hole would be fully sealed. She examined the hole, the weird static of garganta through it, wondering what on earth they really were.
"Come through there?" Jitter took a second to ponder her answer. She looked around, chin resting on her paw as if she'd find the answer waiting for her to see it. "Did I come through here?" She repeated the question, a soft musing hum coming from her. "You would think I'd know these things." She cleared her throat. "DID I COME THROUGH HERE?" After I few more moments of increasingly more awkward shouts into the air, Jitter faced the woman. "I actually don't remember. I could have come through there, but I don't think it matters."
Floating in the air around her, she watched the woman work. It was interesting for all but five seconds. Five whopping seconds of entertainment before Jitter was absolutely bored with it. Closing holes wasn't the most exciting work. "Not the most exciting work huh?" She actually felt bad for the woman. "I feel bad for you. I get bored, but I could never do something that made me more bored." She paused and lowered herself nearly to her shoulder. "You never gave me your name. We can't be friends if you don't give me your name. Wait, no we could still be friends, but it would be weird. I wouldn't be able to introduce you. This is my friend, then I'd pause until I came up with a random name to call you. You look like a Vanessa, or maybe a Marcia. Then when I'm asked how we can be friends if I don't know your name, I'll have to make up some excuse."
Vanessa jumped slightly when it shouted, before clenching her teeth, and plunging the needle through the air next to the hole, and deftly pulling the thread through. She considered asking Jitter for help but thought better of it. Besides- she didn't need help. When Jitter conceded that it didn't really matter where it came from all Vanessa could do was make a muffled "mmhmm" sound as she had put a portion of string in her mouth to aid spooling. When Jitter told her it felt sorry for her, she could but shrug. It was difficult work, and so boredom was relegated for the brief interval of time while she was sewing. She wasn't, despite her claims to the contrary, a particularly adept Holer, which was probably why she had been assigned a backwards middle-of-nowhere hole to patch and why this thing was now bothering her.
"Yeah, Vanessa." she grunted through the thread, simply assuming she had said her name offhandedly and the creature had only half-remembered, or was embarrassed to get it wrong. She was about halfway through now, and left the needle poking in mid-air, dropping the thread from her teeth to unspool a little more of it. "Are you like, an it? Do you have a gender, or whatever." she asked, not paying much attention as she got what she thought was enough to finish the stitch, before snipping the end off with a pair of scissors. She deftly tied it into a particular kind of knot that was supposed to stop the thead slipping- Nessa didn't really understand, she just did what she was told. She looked up at the timid looking creature which was evidently quite the chatterbox. Despite how annoying it was, Jitter was kind of cute and she couldn't help but feel more than somewhat endeared towards it. "Is there anyone in particular you'd like to introduce me to?" She asked, attempting to get a word in edgeways against the monologue, as she began stitching once more.
Without so much as a pause, Jitter continued on in response to Vanessa. "Yeah, definitely a Vanessa. Marcia is an okay name, but Vanessa fits better. It gives off a certain sophisticated flair. Like, ya know people that are just better than others in every way without trying. I'm sure you live that kind of life, and if you don't... well, what gives? But I'm positive you are a cool person. So positive in fact that I'm thinking about hanging out with you for the day."
Not that Jitter would admit it, but she didn't have anything else to do, nor anywhere else to be. She wouldn't beg for someone to keep her around, she had her pride after all. She would however not be above inserting herself into someone's daily life if it suited her. This wasn't the first time, and wouldn't be the last time.
"And I'll ignore that rude question because you are definitely of some sort of nobility or something. You don't know how to talk to people without sounding so high and mighty." She nodded a few times. "I'm a girl. I think." She ran her hands over her body. "Yeah I'm gonna go with girl." She continued checking for signs of a gender. She never gave it any thought honestly. It was assumed that whatever pronoun used in a narrative concerning her would match her voice. "Either way, I don't have anyone in particular that I'd introduce you to. I was only talking of the possibility of doing it."
She was a little perplexed more than disturbed by the weird compliments. Was this some elaborate prank, or hoax? Someone trying to pull one over on her or something? Obviously Nessa thought she was pretty cool, otherwise she'd have done something to change herself but she just mumbled her thanks through the thread which was once again in her mouth. She was nearly done now. Jitter was thinking of hanging out with her? Well wasn't she lucky. Still, as long as the creature didn't mind doing most of the talking and Nessa wasn't too compelled to reply to absolutely everything; if she did her mouth would get dry, perhaps Jitter wasn't too bad a companion.
She was down to the last couple of stitches when Jitter admonished Nessa for being rude. Thread out of her mouth and kind of limply hanging in space while she tugged the needle back through the first hole with some difficulty, she at least attempted to defend herself. "Well I mean hey, to my credit to a regular-human looking person such as myself you don't really exhibit any of the dimorphisms we use to distinguish-" but as Jitter introduced herself as a girl suddenly Vanessa realized that her voice was obviously feminine and she felt a little embarrassed.
She pulled the needle through, finally; careful not to stab herself, before cutting the thread off and pulling it, and the other end she had initially inserted tight. As she did so the hole to the garganta, which had already been squashed tight but was still slightly visible, tightened and then disappeared entirely, and the thread dissolved. She nodded, happy with her work and began winding the remaining thread back onto the spool before stowing it all once more on her back.
"I'm not actually nobility at all." she corrected Jitter. "Fairly lowborn, all things considered. Here; I need to walk down the valley. You shouldn't have any issues keeping up, seeing as you can fly and all." she said, before heading off.
Success! Vanessa was willing to allow Jitter to tag along. That was a first, no really, a first. The closest she'd been with someone else was with... "Some crazy computer lady." Jitter made conversation as she floated just behind Vanessa's shoulder. "She had some sort of magic thingie. I'm not sure the best way to explain it." And nobody could fault her for that. Artificial intelligence was not for the common folk. Just thinking about how smart a person needed to be to make one confused her. On top of that, the thing was able to walk around and do everything normal people would. "She could also fly, because that was fun." If her sarcasm wasn't apparent, no it wasn't fun at all. The thing could fly much faster than her, and it went all over the place. It tired her out just thinking about it.
"So where are we going? Got another one of those hole things you need to sew up?" Jitter contemplated how many holes she could watch her fix before getting too bored. It was somewhere in the single digits. She estimated one and a half, two at the most, but that was really stretching it.
She navigated the rocks as Jitter chattered away next to her. Vanessa wondered if she'd get a promotion from this. She fucking well hoped so, all things considered, it was the least they could do. It was tough to go from a relatively cushy job back to being a total scrub in the Kido Corps.
"The hell's a computer?" she asked, slightly irritated at her own ignorance. She'd heard the term loosely, and knew that that was what the twelfth division did, but she did her best to steer well clear of them and their creepy captain. Some things Jitter said she couldn't even follow the context of as she seemed to be prattling partly to herself. But where she could she would reply, no need to stay silent for the sake of it. "Well I mean plenty of people can fly. It's hardly becoming to be surprised or annoyed by that. It's just life." she said with a haughty sniff.
She hopped from one rock to another, her nimbleness letting her hop distances that would elude most people. She landed on the other bank and they plunged further into the forest, she walked straight through the bush, barely even whacking it away as she stomped through the undergrowth.
"No holes. I'm supposed to rendevouz with someone at the bottom of the mountain and then take a senkaimon back to the seireitei- cheaper to do it that way than to open two, not to mention the Soshi's gotten nervous about opening and closing the damned thing since we have no idea what's making the holes. What the hell you're just a little critter, what would you even know about senkaimons and the business of soul reapers."
Jitter found it strange that she didn't know what a computer was, but claimed that it was normal for people to be able to fly. There was a thing that people needed in order to be able to fly, something she had that they didn't. Unless she missed the importance of wings. She shrugged the comment of as they continued down the mountainside. "Oh, so you are meeting up with someone else?" Jitter was a little on edge. Vanessa may have been nice, though that said nothing of her friend. While she hoped they could all be friendly with each other, it became obvious that there was no way of that happening.
"A soul reaper? You mean a shinigami? Like those people that slash people like me to pieces?" Jitter stopped abruptly. "Vanessa, you wouldn't happen to be a, ya know, a shinigami would you? Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me my new best friend wouldn't betray me." Getting worked up at the realization of Vanessa's origins, Jitter let out a loud howl of a cry. It was very reminiscent of a hollow's cry, and echoed throughout the mountain. As if replying to her, something else cried out, very much like her own.
"Uhh yes, that's the plan." Nessa replied, not really thinking about it as they emerged once more down by the river bank, Vanessa's boots crunching on the gravel. The trail was fairly easy going from here on out. The river was prone to flash flooding as it was fed from a glacial source, and so the bed was much wider than the fairly small stream that currently slid down it, barely making a sound as it flowed over the rocks. She noticed that Jitter was getting a little excitable and turned around to face her when they stopped.
"Of course I'm a shinigami. What, you are a hollow?" she paused, not sure how to feel. Her instincts told her hollows were bad. But Jitter hadn't exactly tried to eat her or do anything really but talk a lot and bug her and Vanessa didn't really mind. Somehow being non-human made it seem cute instead of annoying which is what it would have been had Jitter been a human or a shinigami, god forbid. But apparently the inherent racism went both ways. She screeched, making Vanessa tumble over sideways, off-balance because of the cumbersome sewing equipment. That was when she heard it- a screeched response. Her pupils contracted, and she shrugged off the spool and needle, and reached for her Diana Gikongan, before flicking back the snake head and ingesting the pill.
Her spirit body sprang to its feet, shrouded in black globs of reiatsu as it chaotically flew from her, while the gigai gathered the things and ran away into the woods, as far from the sound as it could on Nessa's command.
"Jitter whatever that was it's going to try and eat me, and maybe you too." she said, still in turmoil about the harmless hollow.
Things were looking really bad, almost super bad. Not only was Vanessa, Jitter's new best friend, her partner against the forces of boredom, her future candy buyer, her.... you get the picture, a shinigami, but there was another shinigami in the area. Even more dangerous, Vanessa now fully understood she was a hollow, and there was another hollow in the area. Judging based on the cry, and she was no expert. It wasn't as if she had a hollowdex to listen to their cries repeatedly, but the hollow sounded much larger than her. Which wasn't hard, though didn't change how terrifying the experience had become.
"Vanessa why? Why did you trick me? I thought we were going to be close like Bert and Ernie, or Ernie and his duckie because lets be honest, I'm as cute as a baby duckling, maybe even cuter." The hollow she had inadvertently alerted to their position was closing fast. The ground rumbled, and the trees shook. Birds scattered to the wind, fleeing from the unseen predator. "I don't want to die. AGAIN!" There was no fate worse than second death. She didn't expect to come back to life after death, and definitely not as a cute bat creature, but there was no way of knowing if there was an after afterlife.
"Whaat!?" she asked slightly bemused. "What on earth did you think I was!? You even thought I was highborn- do humans even have royal families or anything any more!?" she was bemused at the hollow's irrational outburst. Who the hell were Bert and Ernie? So many questions, and not enough time to answer any of them. The hollow, wherever the hell it was (she would watch Jitter for any signs she knew where it was, what with Vanessa's reiatsu sense being so awful) would emerge any moment and Vanessa had to make sure that she at least didn't get eaten. If Jitter died... Well it would be sad, she supposed, but she was just a hollow it wasn't like it was a major issue.
"Keeper of the gates of Hell, cast your judgment on the foolish Man. He who sits upon to throne of skulls, unchanging, undying. The wallowing lotus pitifully clings to its ashes, the horrors of Abyss reflected in its fear!" she said, and flames wrapped around her right gauntlet, illuminating her menacingly so that when the hollow appeared, she could release the kido, hopefully killing it in a single blow. Her heart pounded in her throat. She stood in such a way as to attempt to protect Jitter, though she knew not where the threat was coming from. The seconds took hours.
Jitter was scared, but Vanessa was more afraid than her. She assumed that her fear wasn't letting her think straight. Of course there were royal families. Even if she didn't know the state of Japan's government, she should have at least know of the Queen of England. That lady was one of the most powerful, influential, and popular political figures around the world.
Jitter spun in circles. She couldn't place the direction the attack was coming from. Usually, the sound of the roar was enough to let her know, but the echo distorted her senses. However, she did face it when it came into view. A beast of a thing, and that was her only way of describing it. She shrieked and took flight. The fate of any shinigami was no skin off her nose. Besides, that particular shinigami lied to her, and made her believe they were a simple human with the special ability to perceive her. They were going to be best friends even.
After getting a good distance away, she stopped and turned towards where she'd left Vanessa. "Oh no, my conscience is telling me something. Ugh... I don't want to go back." She groaned loudly before heading back. She hadn't a clue what she would do to help Vanessa. Hopefully, Vanessa already killed it.

Jitter's spinning made Nessa feel somewhat nauseous. Trying to concentrate on hitting something she couldn't for the life of her hope to sense made all distractions incredibly frustrating. Nessa was grateful for her for the split second of warning she got when she appeared to snap to attention in the direction of the oncoming threat; this brief feeling of gratitude was overcome by the further annoyance at the shrieking as Jitter fled. The hollow was awful- the mask looked like a grotesque parody of a human face, all teeth and eyes. Vanessa didn't hesitate.
She immediately leapt up, screaming "Hado 53, Fumetsu Hishuran!" while boosting the power of the kido using her shikai's powers. The flames that impacted the hollow from her fist- as well as the fist itself which had non-neglible striking power, if Nessa said so herself, exploded the hollow's face and head the fire almost literally cleaving the beast down the middle due to the considerable force that Vanessa had put into it. Vanessa dropped to the floor, attempting to wipe away the gore on the black outfit she wore. She was masked now, as her spiritual body had been clad in kido corps uniform. She sighed, looking around to see where Jitter had got to.
Awesome, she was actually able to do just what Jitter hoped. The hollows was defeated swiftly without any assistance. Vanessa sure was strong, a great best friend to have indeed. At least, she assumed that it was still Vanessa.
Jitter floated there, staring directly at the mask covering the shinigami's face. Without being able to see her completely, she wasn't entirely sure it was her and not the fellow shinigami that she was supposed to meet up with. Jitter was ever the cautious one, mostly because her instincts were to flee from the unknown. However, she drifted a little closer. "Soooo you did it," she said questioningly. She waved as she got her attention and moved closer still. "I, uh, didn't want to get in your way so I, went over there. You are definitely really really REALLY strong then yeah? If you could do that to whatever that hollow was, then taking me out wouldn't be any trouble at all would it? But we're friends right? Best friends even? Not someone that you would want to explode into a mess of gore?" An uneasy chuckle passed before a moment of silence.

"Ahh jeez now I've lost my gigai. Ehh maybe it's just a write off." she said irritably to herself, suddenly remembering. Jitter was nowhere to be seen, so she looked around a bit before a flash of orange caught her eye. Nice of her to stick around, Vanessa guessed. Though if all she could do was talk at people and flap about it only made sense to run away to avoid getting eaten. She wondered what Junta would make of her- maybe he'd try to kill her. Somehow she had to lose the hollow before they hit the bottom of the mountain.
There she was again, talking a million words a minute, while Vanessa looked down at the corpse of the hollow below her. Luckily she'd punched it when she killed it'd so its purified soul would be headed to soul society right now. Gory but it worked, right? Nessa merely nodded in response to the little hollow's questions, to make sure she'd got all of them before responding.
"Well strong is relative but sure. Best, uuh friends. I mean I'm not going to explode you." she said, staunchly. "Sorry you probably don't recognize me so well- this mask is part of our stupid uniform. Anyway let's go I don't want to be late." she said, indicating down the mountain, wondering exactly what she was doing and how she could see this as being normal.
Okay great, so it was Vanessa, and on top of that, she agreed to them being friends. That made things so much easier. Jitter calmed herself as she followed closely behind her. While she felt better with Vanessa, there was still the slight issue of the other shinigami. There was no telling what they'd do.
------
"Oh hi it is nice to meet you, I'm Vanessa's best friend." Jitter said with a smile. She was blissfully unaware of the shinigami's quick movements as her head came from her shoulders.
-------------
"What is that?" Vanessa's partner jumped at Jitter before giving her a chance to answer.
---------------------
"So uh, Vanessa. Your partner won't explode me either right? I know you may be super awesome and different, but most shinigami I run into don't want anything more than to run me through with their swords. I'm not dangerous or anything. I mean, look at me." She motioned over her body. "Does it look like I'm dangerous? My teeth couldn't even break skin." She opened her mouth to show her fangs, and that is exactly what they were. They didn't appear overly large, but she definitely had a set of teeth that could do some damage if the target was unsuspecting.
