"Preferences~" Beatrice chuckled slowly, before giving Kyoko a sheepish smirk. She arched an eyebrow when Kyoko confirmed that she was persuing her education at the Karakura high school. Like she was. "I've never seen you around before. Then again, I don't really pay attention." She shrugged with her free arm. "I usually hide it. Always got an eyepatch on in school. I prefer the blue one." She nodded slowly as Kyoko started to gather up the tools and cleaning the medical things, Beatrice nodded slowly and pulled the sleeve of her vest down again. "Thanks a bunch." She stood up again. Well, at least the girl took her advice and went through her knees, rather than bowing forward.
She followed Kyoko back to the front and smiled gently. "Akahito, Beatrice. You have a good day aswell, Kagami-san. Maybe I'll run into you at school someday." She pushed the door open and left with a wave, pulling a cellphone from her pocket to check the time. Muttering a curse in good old german, she slipped the phone back in her pocket and adjusted the backpack on her back. She was running late. Her train to Naruki would leave shortly. With a deep breath, she started to run, praying she'd still be in time.
Emi was paying no attention to her sister, or her new friend, she was far too into her homework, and unless someone screamed she didn't need to look up. Seran's next statement shocked her for just a moment, but only for a moment. She somewhat assumed Kyoko's relationship with this man had something to do with spirits. "I had to be coy, I'm going to tell a random stranger I see ghosts? And here I was thinking you looked intelligent." Emi finished her math homework and put the book into her backpack, taking out her history textbook.
Emi had no idea that people were staring at them, she wasn't one to be socially conscious, she just continued on with her homework as Seran explained his relationship with Kyoko. "Came into your shop looking for ghosts? What kind of shop do you even own that people would think theres ghost in them." Emi looked up at Seran for a moment, studying his facial expression, or lack-there-of if he makes none. "Especially those that can actually see ghosts?"
There was something weird about this entire situation. "Actually... are you a ghost?" Emi could usually tell a ghost from a living person, theres normally no "substance" to them, but maybe Emi's guard was lowered and she looked like she was sitting her talking to herself.
Kyoko waved to Beatrice one last time as she left the cafe. She was such a nice girl, and a good potential friend. If she gamed, she wouldn't have minded having her on the team. At least for the first few games. If she sucked, well then she simply had to go. There was always room for cheerleaders and good friends, but teammates needed to be able to carry their own weight. While Kyoko could hard carry in anything, she didn't particularly enjoy doing it.... all the time.
After showing a new customer to their seat, and passing them off to another maid, Kyoko returned to Emi and Seran. She took a seat closer to Emi, noticing that she was still doing homework. History was definitely not her strong suit, not that she was knowledgeable in any of her schoolwork. "So uh, what have you two been talking about? I hope you weren't saying anything mean behind my back." Kyoko chuckled. She didn't actually think they would be, but it was only a half joke. Emi could make playful, sarcastic, and partially insulting remarks about anyone. None were safe. They shared that trait, though Kyoko focused more on people that annoyed her, like their brother.
Seran found himself grinning slightly a Emi’s cheeky remark. She certainly had more spunk than her sister. And speaking of, Kyoko had returned from the back of the shop with the other girl, who promptly left the shop without ceremony. He waved his hand dismissively at Emi’s question about his shop.
“You’ve got the wrong idea, it isn’t haunted it's just a pawn shop. But it seems when you have a bunch of old antiques in a dimly lit store people just assume it’s haunted, especially people too young to know better.”
Emi didn’t seem entirely convinced by his dismissal, and had seemingly abandoned her work to stare at him intently. He raised an eyebrow at the behavior, but his confusion was short lived. A ghost? Him? Perhaps he had underestimated her a bit.
But then again….
It suddenly dawned on him that perhaps Kyoko had had the same idea, which would explain why she had sat him down next to her sister so it wouldn’t look like she was serving an empty table. Seran wasn’t entirely sure whether to be annoyed or amused now that he understood the situation. Kyoko was returning to their table, but Seran got in one statement before she did so.
“A ghost wouldn’t order tea. No way to drink it.”
He gave her a somewhat sly grin, then turned to face Kyoko as she returned, amusement still showing on his face.
“What’s the point of being mean to you if you aren’t aware of it? No, I was just telling Emi how we met, she’s quite suspicious of me.”
Emi continued to eye Seran suspiciously, though at this point there was no reason to doubt him. "A pawn shop..." Emi thought for a moment. There was a particular pawn shop that everyone swore up and down was haunted. "I get it, you own that pawn shop." That only made Emi more suspicious of him, that pawn shop was in fact creepy, and with him seeing spirits maybe it was in fact haunted.
"A ghost could order tea, maybe not drink it, but certainly try and feel more human." Emi grinned, she knew it was a stretch but it wasn't hurting anyone. "Though, Mr. Seran, how much about ghosts do you know?" Both she and her sister were new to this world and Emi wanted answers to almost everything.
Kyoko took her seat next to Emi, who closed her book and smiled up to her big sister. "Not mean per-say though... I certainly hope theres nothing you broke that mom and dad have to pay for." Emi kicked her feet as she was just slightly too short to reach the floor while sitting. "But no, I was just asking your... acquaintance about ghosts and spirits, that he seemingly knows that you, and now we, can see." Emi didn't mean to sound so motherly, but it just came naturally whenever she spoke to her sister.
"Oh thanks," she scrunched her face up at both the sarcastic remarks. Kyoko hadn't expected her sister and Seran to be so similar when it came to teasing her. They both took the 'we are smarter than you' approach, although Emi sounded more like their mother. Perhaps a learned trait, Emi did spend more time around their mother than her. At least she'd make a great aunt whenever she had a kid... If ever she had a kid. The sims games were good indicators of all the crazy things that could happen in parenthood. It would be especially hard if they were anything like her.
"Well," she looked Seran in the eyes. "I guess you could start from the beginning. I know a bit more than Emi-chan, but I definitely don't know a lot."
Kyoko turned to her sister and gave her a nod. In her own way, she was being a good big sister. Taking care of Emi, and teaching her new things came with the job. There was nothing to say she couldn't get help in the teaching. Besides, she was also learning, and it gave her the chance to knock Emi down a few pegs. For once, she knew more than her about something that wasn't video games.
Seran eyed them both for a moment, frowning wondering how exactly he had gotten roped into teaching them about the spiritual world. It had been a long time since he had actually thought about the basic workings within the cycle of reincarnation, since most non-humans regarded it as common knowledge. But he submitted that he did have slightly more to say on the matter then some run-of-the-mill shinigami would. He cleared his throat slightly, considering the best place to start.
“From the beginning eh? Well this is quite a large scale topic so you’ll have to guide me a bit on what exactly you want to know. To start with then, human souls are separate from the physical body, since your soul is composed of spiritual matter or ‘reishi’ and you body is composed of normal matter or “kishi”. These two forms that make up an individual are bound together by a chain called the ‘chain of fate’ which connects directly to your soul here.”
He pointed at the center of Emi’s chest.
“Under certain circumstances, like a near death experience, your soul can be temporarily pushed out of your body and you would see the chain that connects them. You’ve probably heard of people having ‘out of body experiences’ yes? This is usually what they are describing. And if or when the chain breaks, or wears away with time….”
Seran made a motion with his hands like he was pulling something apart.
“...that is what you call death. I’m sure in the ghosts you’ve seen you’ve probably noticed the broken chain connected to their chest. Here is where we get into what you wanted to know. Normally at this point, a soul is free to move around as it pleases, and would be called a ‘plus’; these are the little wispy fellows you see flying around, still basically human just no body to return to. Under normal circumstances the… ugh….”
The mod soul’s eye narrowed with annoyance and he did finger quotes in the air.
“‘Shinigami’ tap these guys on the head and send them off to the next life, that's how it's supposed to work anyway.”
Seran paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts as he prepared to delve into an area of his own research. He tried to come up with the least complicated way to explain it.
“What's important to understand here, is that the greatest effect on a souls development is emotion. I don’t know how is was with you two, but generally if you aren’t born with the ability to see ghosts and do…. other things…. it awakens in response to an emotional event. But this effect can have a negative effect on the soul as well, especially after you die.”
He waved his hand somewhat dismissively.
“There are a bunch of names for the souls with issues like this, but the important point is that they don’t want to leave the human the human world. They have some unfinished business that causes them to actively avoid and resist attempts to send them to the next life, usually coming from love, anger, or fear. Love for someone or something that they don’t want to leave behind, anger over their death or some grudge from their life that couldn’t let go of, or fear of what comes next, or in some cases of what their punishment will be because of actions during their life. These are what you would typically call ‘ghosts’ because they’re much less friendly and often antagonistic towards humans.”
His tone shifted slightly as he continued, becoming grimmer than before.
“It wouldn’t even be an issue, if it weren’t for the fact the every soul that remains in the human world is a ticking timebomb. The chain of fate doesn’t just stay connected forever, it decays very slowly over time, a process that is sped up by the the obsession to pursue their unfinished business . And when it finally wears down all the way to the soul…. to put it plainly what you get is a monster.”
It was almost as if a flashback was running while Emi listened to Seran's explanation. She looked back on her experience with ghosts, the chain she never paid any mind to had suddenly made sense. Some seemed shorter than others and she never bothered to ask, she didn't like interacting with many spirits. The end of Seran's explanation brought some bad memories for her, though she couldn't exactly remember everything she does remember this horrible beast with a strange mask, was that the "monster" Seran was talking about?
"So these monsters... do they appear often?" Emi was feeling less desire to even know about the spiritual plane. "And is there a way to protect ourselves from them? I mean... I kind of have a way but I'm not good at it yet." There was a skill she is able to do, but she isn't a fighter and doesn't go looking for any fights and therefore has yet to have an opportunity to use it, she didn't even tell Kyoko about it at first because it freaked her out for a good month.
"Not that I would want to fight them but...." Her voice faded and she looked at her big sister fro a moment. "Have you ever seen one of these... 'Shinigami' or whatever?" Addressing Seran.
There was lot of said in a short amount of time. Even with what she learned prior, the new information was a tad overwhelming. Reishi is spirit and Kishi is real, she thought to herself. It was easy to draw the line that way, but reishi was also very real. Neither could she say kishi was alive and reishi wasn't. Dealing with life after death proved complicated. Why couldn't they just be zombies? Zombies were simple and far easier to understand.
Fortunately, Emi took to the storm of information far better than her older sister. Kyoko hid her confusion with a smile, letting her sister take the floor. However, her smile quickly faded upon mention of a way of protecting themselves. "Emi-chan," Kyoko wanted her attention, but let her finish what she had to say. "What do you mean you have a way of protecting yourself?"
Kyoko had an idea. It was comforting and frightening at the same time. The monsters she spoke of, hollows, she had already slain a few herself. Knowing Emi had something to fight back meant she could rest easier. It also meant she wasn't as weird as she assumed. It could be common, at least for the special people, to gain abilities. However, that meant her sister would no doubt attract more hollows than others. Hollows were especially drawn to souls with higher powers. At least, that is what the shinigami and the friendly arrancar lead her to believe.
"Is it something like this?" With her index and middle finger out, she carefully extended what appeared to be a beam of light. It gave off a soft hum, and a warm feeling. She made sure to keep it from getting too close to either of them. Whenever the light made contact with something, it was usually cut and burned.
“They are not uncommon. Though shinigami do keep them under moderate control, especially in a population center like this.”
Emi’s following statements almost made Seran feel bad for her. She clearly didn’t have any desire to fight with something that would be termed a monster, which he completely understood coming from a human. But before he could continue, Kyoko cut in, seemingly surprised by Emi’s admission of having developed what Seran assumed was a beginning spiritual ability. Then, before he could stop her, she pointed her fingers out much like a child pretending to have a gun, and he flinched as a beam a reiryoku sprung from them. He glanced hurriedly around to make sure no one had noticed, then gave Kyoko a somewhat exasperated look.
“This is not the best place to be flaunting your abilities girl.”
Seran frowned, hoping she would understand and cancel out the energy before it was noticed, the normal humans would likely be incapable of visually seeing it. But its effects, like the light illuminating the table would likely be noticed is she kept it up for too long. He leaned in, putting his arms on the table.
“While not meaning to alarm either of you, the ability to do things like that is a clear representation of a change in your soul’s composition. And while that does have positive effects, it also makes you stand out to other spiritual beings like the……”
He paused, realizing he had not actually explain what a hollow was.
“Those monsters I mentioned, they are, in essence, a corrupted version of a normal soul. And one of the main “symptoms” of that corruption is a hunger for other souls. And unfortunately, the more developed a soul is, the more attractive it is to these… they’re mostly referred to as hollows, on account of the hole in their chest where a soul would normally be.”
As he had initially thought, there really was too much information to get across.
“But yes they can be combated with skills like the one your sister just displayed, though the more focused and perfected the easier it is to defend yourself.”
Emi's eyes widened at Kyoko's expression of power, and then utter horror as she realized they were in public. Looking around feverishly to see if anyone had witnessed such a phenomenon she realized that nobody was paying attention, or even acknowledging what Kyoko had done. Before Emi had a chance to say something, most likely to reprimand her sister's carelessness, Seran had already warned her not to use her powers so flamboyantly.
While Emi was alarmed by his next statement, she felt it was a given. This, however, left her with a problem. Either she trains somehow to protect herself, while also inviting more of the monsters, or try to blend in more, leaving herself defenseless to any future attacks. Kyoko won't be there forever.
Emi reached up toward the center of the table, her palms maybe three or four inches a part. In the center a small ball of water was forming, growing larger until it was the size of a golf ball before Emi dropped it in a nearby cup. "That's pretty much what I can do..." There was more, but it wasn't exactly appropriate to do so here."Being able to do this... makes me a target, right?" There was a bit of worry in her tone.
Kyoko pulled in her blade as she apologized. She didn't give it any thought beyond showing Seran and Emi what she could do. It never occurred to her that some of the effects could be seen by even the non spiritually aware. Giving it some thought, she started giving spiritual reasons to many of the unexplained phenomenons she'd come across in her life.
Everything Seran went on to explain was more or less known. She graduated the beginner spiritual classes already. However, she didn't know that her abilities could become stronger. What getting stronger entitled was a mystery, though she assumed it was like any other acquired skill. Maybe it was like weight lifting. The more she used her ability, the better it would become.
Watching her sister closely, Kyoko tilted her head as the water formed. "Wow, that's so cool Emi-chan." Kyoko wanted to stay positive and downplay her sister's fear. "Hey, we can become like a magical girl duo. We have the synergy of water and lightning. Nothing can stop our sisterly bond. We'll practice and protect our town from souls that have fallen from the path. Wouldn't that be awesome? Doubt anyone can say they are just humans and protect the town from the unseen hollow threat."
A frown invaded Seran’s features as he became momentarily lost in thought, drowning out most of Kyoko’s exclamation at Emi’s display of powers. Their base powers were quite compatible, and he couldn’t help pondering the reason. Souls of related individuals tended to have a similar structure, meaning they should both have lightning or water or at least variations rather than completely different elements entirely. He wondered it their parents had powers of any notability, it was a missing piece. But in the moment his hypothesis was Emi’s powers had been born in response to her sister’s, and he doubted that under comparison the two girl’s souls would look like the souls of siblings given his theory on Kyoko’s origin. We’ll have to save such a comparison for later…
He returned his attention to the conversation in time to hear Kyoko’s excitement about the two of them being “magical girls”. It was a new term to Seran, but given the statements that followed he interpreted it to be something similar to a hero character in human literature.
“This isn’t some kind of game you know. Without proper training you’re more likely to hurt yourselves then a hollow. And just randomly releasing your abilities will only serve to draw them in before you’re ready to deal with them.”
Kyoko's encouragements made Emi feel slightly better about being a target, but her excitement and suggestion gave Emi mixed feelings. On one side she and her sister can become heroes, use special powers to fight off the evil in this world. On the other side they become even bigger targets and their lives will constantly be in danger. Normally Emi would want to separate herself from any real danger, but she was already a target and would have no means of protecting herself if the time were to come.
Emi turned her attention back to Seran, her eyes narrowing as suspension rose up once again within her. "Why do you know so much about all this and... why exactly are you willingly giving us this information?" Emi learned from her mother that one should always expect a catch. "I imagine you want something, or even more if we were to ask you to train us." It was a stretch, and Emi wasn't even sure if training with this strange man was even a good idea, but he was the only source of information they have, and running out and throwing around their powers seemed like the worst idea ever.
Kyoko knew it wasn't a game. If it were a game, she would have chosen better powers than some lame lightning blade. Well, it wasn't too lame, but there were definitely much cooler powers. It would be awesome to have the ability to summon a sniper rifle, and she could run n gun her way through the hollows. Better yet, what if she had the ability to manipulate vibrations. That would be bad ass.
"Yeah yeah, we have to be serious, I know." She rolled her eyes and listened to her sister. "Oh here we go again." Emi was so suspicious of everything. Okay, Kyoko was pretty suspicious of people too, but Seran wasn't that type of person. Always one to have a pretty good understanding of a person's true personality, Seran was definitely the misunderstood type. He had that mysterious feeling behind him. It made him appear more harmful than he actually was. Under the right circumstances, he could be kind of a catch for a young girl.
Definitely not Kyoko's type... at least not at the moment.
"Seran-sama is fine. He wouldn't take advantage of us, and if he does, we'll just take him down together." Mostly a bluff, but she made it appear real enough. "But seriously, shinigami are supposed to protect us living people, and Seran is a shinigami, so he'll definitely help us out. Even if he doesn't see eye to eye with them." Kyoko hoped he would take that as a chance to explain why he hid from them.
Emi certainly was a sharp one, but given the circumstances it was entirely reasonable for her to be suspicious of him. Kyoko’s response was amusing. She was remarkably quick to come to the defense of someone she had met only recently, especially when she knew even less about Seran then she thought. It was probably best to let her continue thinking he was a shinigami for the time being, the truth would likely be too complicated for her anyway. He attempted to cut into her dismissal of Emi’s concern.
“Now wait a moment, her suspicion, at least in regards to this, isn’t exactly unfounded. You did just meet me yesterday after all. And you…”
He pointed at Emi and grinned slyly.
“Suspicion is a good thing, you’ll probably live longer. But once the suspect knows you’re suspicious, they’re just going to avoid arousing further suspicion.”
His pointed finger flipped upward in a silencing gesture.
“But in this case you are partially right. Normal humans developing abilities is actually quite a rarity. Siblings with equal potential for such powers is even rarer than that. So my interest is purely scientific. Oh and one more thing, that information I’ve 'willingly given you' is not exactly a secret, any shinigami you run into would roll their eyes if you didn’t know at least that much."
Emi contemplated rolling her eyes at her sister but she wasn't rude, there was nothing wrong with being suspicious of this man. His grin didn't help ease the suspension either, nor did his little lesson he gave. Emi wasn't sure what to think, however, if this man was a shinigami why was his relation wasn't positive.
Emi sighed and sat back in her chair, running her hand through her hair she felt she needed to make a decision here. As the older sister Kyoko would usually make a decision like this but she would never force Emi into something that made her uncomfortable or something she wouldn't be able to handle. That is why Emi knew Kyoko wouldn't ask what was needed to be asked.
"Ok, Mr. Shinigami, I realize this isn't a game." She bit her lip and thought for a moment. "And because this isn't a game and I've already.... been attacked, we need to protect ourselves before protecting the town." At that point Emi was stricken with regret, she was showing such desperation and vulnerability, it wasn't a comfortable feeling. Taking in a heavy breath and exhale. "Could you... I don't know.. train us?"
And there it was, even Seran called her a freak. Well, not exactly. Actually, he didn't called her anything of the sort. The words were different, and the way it was said carried a different meaning. She wasn't a freak, she was special. Not just her, but her sister as well. It was like winning the lottery, but instead of money, they won superpowers.
"If she's willing, then I'm definitely willing to enter superpower bootcamp." Kyoko had no idea what that entitled, but she wouldn't back down for anything. As far as she was concerned, the potential fun and perks of becoming hero were far outweighed by her desire to keep Emi safe. As a big sister, she was sworn into service of her younger sibling. She wouldn't fail her like their brother.
Kyoko looked to her sister. "Emi-chan, you don't have to do this though. It's like he said, getting stronger means there will be more things after you." She was suddenly serious. "I will go through whatever training alone and keep you safe." She smiled. "But you are probably going to say 'you can't be there to protect me all the time and I'm not a little girl anymore' aren't you?"
Seran’s gaze shifted between the sisters and he raised an eyebrow at the juxtaposition. Emi looked for all the world like she had eaten something bitter and simultaneously come to the realization that she would never taste anything sweet again. Her sister was almost the exact opposite, like a kid that had gotten a new toy, but her excitement seemed to vanish when she looked at Emi and saw her sister’s expression. Her comment about being the only one who needed to be trained caused Seran to frown.
“Unless you plan on being with her every moment of every day I wouldn’t recommend it. And besides, it’s best if you’re learning to have someone at your own skill level, if all you have to compare yourself to is your instructor you’ll never feel like you’re getting anywhere.”
He returned his gaze to Emi and her rather hopeless expression.
“Don’t look so glum, it's not like you’re being forced from your world to live exclusively in another. Learning to protect yourself and utilize your abilities won’t ruin your life as it is, in fact it will probably make it better.”
He glanced down at the table again, remembering once again that he’d never gotten to order his drink. Sighing, he looked up to see both of them still staring at him expectedly.
“What? You don’t actually expect me to start teaching you here do you? Kyoko, you still have those passes I gave you yes? When the two of you are ready go to the address listed and ask for me. And wear something…..”
