What goes into making a masterwork? Anyone who's read the item creation guide (so only me badumtish) knows that one of the main things the mastery leads up to is the ability to make masterwork items. For those who do not know, here is the definition from the guide:
“Masterworks are the highest tier of item obtainable on the site, and as such must have their entire creation process written out in detail, often going far beyond the physical level of creation. The resulting items are graded harshly on a case to case basis, but are not restricted by the rules that bind other items. They are also considered site canon, and hiding the fact that such an object has been made is neigh impossible.”
Masterworks are made from Unique quality materials, which are basically materials of legendary rarity. These can be obtained from staff run site plots as rewards, or through extensive OC plot; and as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now, that is exactly what this plot is, the obtainment and making of the first Unique material, and the creation of the site’s first masterwork level item. I’m doing this both because I want to, as also to make a kind of blueprint for anyone who wants to attempt making a masterwork in the future.
Character Involvement:
I will attempt to make this plot as open to people as possible. I’ll obviously be using Seran as the base of this plot, since he’s really the only one on site at the moment who can attempt such a thing. This will make it slightly more difficult for shinigami from the Gotei to be involved. BUT as stated above and in the guide, making a masterwork is not exactly something you can keep a secret, so if we get interest from shinigami for this plot I will include a reason for them to appear down the line in the plot, which can lead to some fun conflict and character interaction.
Anyone not directly affiliated with the Gotei is free to join as they wish, especially characters who have had previous interactions with Seran. Barring special cases, I would prefer to keep this at a one character per member thing to avoid confusion. This may be bypassed if people want canons involved or for other reasons that will need to be discussed. IT SHOULD BE NOTED: That for this plot it you haven’t been involved with Seran we will need to come up with some backstory as to how he recruited them for this assignment, I really don’t have the energy or muse for any more introduction threads. But on the bright side this can be an excuse for character relations you people want to have without having to completely plot everything out.
Other Important Notes:
[1] Some parts of this plot will likely necessitate me DMing certain parts to keep the flow up and urge people in the right direction. This may involve me taking minor control of, or inhibiting your characters in certain ways for the sake of the plot. I will never completely take control of them, or kill them etc… but if you can’t handle a bit of restriction for the sake of story this is your warning.
[2] I intend for this plot to be long, it will take numerous threads to get the effort requirement I’m looking for for obtainment of Unique materials and creation of masterworks. It will have a decent time table IC as well, but this also means your characters will not all be needed for every single thread, in fact I intend for 1-3 to be going simultaneously with different groups doing different things. And if you guys would like to add your own related threads to the mix I am more than happy to accommodate. I may be running the plot but I’m always down for other people to add to it.
[3] While I won’t be super strict about people posting on a regular basis (god knows we all have trouble this this), if people aren’t around or posting for a decent amount of time we may skip you in the order just to keep things moving and keep interest up in everyone participating.
Rewards:
Just so people are aware I am doing this plot mainly as a member not a mod, though at the same time this is also a guide on the level of effort needed it make a masterwork so I may be able to pull some strings depends on how things goes.

[2] Creation Mastery Learnin’ - Again obvious, if you’re assisting in the making of the highest level of item you’re going to learn some stuff.

Plot Summary:
Sometimes progress demands more than just the individual to achieve. Seran has worked mostly alone for some time now, and his accomplishments are numerous. But there are theories to test and boundaries to break, and for this he needs others to share in the load. The red dog has begun work on a project, one that will shake the foundations of the spiritual world, and the completion of which will hopefully act as a beacon to draw others with knowledge and power to his side. The planning phase is now over, and it's time to send out the orders. You will assist in making history, but will it be for a brighter tomorrow, or a future blanketed in darkness?
